Application
Guidelines
Places on ATLS Student courses are allocated according to specialty and geography. Some course centres
will have places allocated to applicants from their region. It is essential that all specialties involved in the
care of the multiply-injured patient are represented on both Instructor and Student courses and that doctors
trained are disseminated throughout the country.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ATLS COURSE:

Please contact the local course centre DIRECTLY to book a place.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is UNABLE to assist with booking

places on courses.

Contact details for each centre can be found towards the end of this
document. Where no details are given, that centre is not accepting
applications at present.

Please note that some of the courses listed below will be full and you may need
to put your name on a waiting list.

PLEASE do not contact centres regarding courses that are full, or about
courses that state Do not apply before prior to the date given.

The ATLS Steering Group acknowledges that, at present, demand for ATLS course places far outstrips
supply and is constantly working towards increasing the number of courses available. The number of
courses is fast rising and there are new course centres each year.

ATLS Instructor courses

In line with standard practice in the USA, ATLS Student course participants who perform extremely well
may be invited to an ATLS Instructor course. Such outstanding participants will be nominated by the Course
Director, as well as meeting the following criteria:

iv)

must score 36 or more marks out of 40 in the multiple choice question paper;
must complete an above-average initial assessment test; and
must have obvious potential as a teacher and perhaps most importantly a positive attitude towards the
concept of ATLS.
Completed 4 years POST foundation training/experience or equivalent

A candidate who fails to meet the above written test requirement may be offered one more opportunity to
achieve the required 36 out 40, if the faculty and Course Director feel strongly that the candidate meets the
other criteria.

Reverification
Candidates who wish to renew their ATLS status may do so by taking the full 3-day Provider course., or a 1day reverification course. Students are given 6 months either side of their 4 year expiry date to reverify.
Note
Candidates may no longer reverify on the final day of a 3-day provider course.
Candidates who wish to renew their status more than 4 years after their pass date will be required to take
a full ATLS Student course.
