My Pops Was Right

Ever since I was born, it was embedded in my mind that football is a way of life. I was going to be a Longhorn, and I was going to attend every game. Its as if my rst words were, Hook Em. When I started college, I had no idea that football really is a culture everyone gets involved with. (Who would have known my Pops was right.) College campuses are lled with student tailgating, watching football games, and wearing their school colors with pride. And if you arent, then you should. Its something to be proud of. Which is why I am so glad that September has rolled around. Not only is college football back, but it is the most anticipated month of the year for me. I get football, beer, Tequila (...of course) and my birthday! If youre not celebrating with me, youre not doing it right. XOXO, Jasmine Vallejo, Editor @jasminevallejo

Jasmine, what is your favorite thing about starting school again?

- William Metcalf, Austin

Kaitlyn, what is the craziest story you have from studying abroad?
- Hiedi Adkins, San Marcos

Abby, what are your tips for staying fashionable when the hectic school year starts up?
- Piper Burke, San Antonio

Katie, we have been through so many UGA mascots lately. Do you think we should get another or give up on them?
Mark Sims, Atlanta

With the another semester rolling around the corner, also comes the great sport of football. My favorite thing about starting the fall is the fact that I get to see my Longhorns play on the eld along with Burnt Orange fans everywhere. Saturdays are lled with BBQ, country music, beer and cowboy boots. Saturdays cant get any better than that!

Well, there would have to be a tie between tanning butt naked on the Barcelona beach or nearly getting arrested in Paris on the 4th of July. Both stories involve lots of alcohol, raging, and ignoring consequences after my actions, but both crazy incidents proved successful for me in the end. Cest la vie!

Dresses. Everyone always thinks Im dressed up because I am wearing dresses, but they are really the easiest things to throw on in the morning. Also, my favorite hairstyle through the summer was the messy chignon. No one ever noticed when my hangover prevented me from caring about my hair.

Have a question for our staff? Tweet us @StudyBreaks

e UGA mascot is such an icon. To completely rid the sporting events of our plump, white bulldog would seem wrong. With all of the inbreeding that has happened to keep the UGA bloodline pure, it has caused health problems on top of their existing ones. I have enjoyed my time with UGA, but I would hate for the future students to not experience the same joy I did when I was able to meet him.

On his upcoming release Another Day, Zach Deputy demonstrates his extraordinary ability to perform and record in multiple contexts and conveys the sensibilities of a mature singer/songwriter. Another Day offers another look at Zach Deputy and seeks to help him cross over into other audiences. Rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs, the music on his recordings are best described as soulful rhythm and blues. Zach Deputy appeals to fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee, but the origins of the style and feel remain classic.

JUNIOR WOMENS CLUB

WE LET THE DAWGS OUT
locks of concrete and patches of dirt now lay where there were once iconic symbols of the classic city. Ceaser Dawgustus once stood on the corner of College Ave. and Broad St. as he watched over the many college students, parents, families and couples as they would pause to snap a picture with what is now a ghostly space. ose beloved dog statues are now far and few between as many of them were auctioned o in fall 2010. In 2003 the Athens-Oconee Junior Womans Club, many local businesses and local artists came together and created the public art exhibit, We Let the Dawgs Out. From attracting thousands of tourists to Athens to engaging our community, Athens was turned into an outdoor museum that all could enjoy. e goal of our bulldog public art project was to instill in the citizens of Athens-Clarke County a deeper love and appreciation for art. We felt there is no better way to accomplish our goal than to expose people to public art. is is rst and foremost has been an art exhibit, states co-chair, Julie Walters.

In fall 2010, the seven-year contract for the dog statues came to a close. All berglass dogs were either auctioned o on eBay or bought by their original sponsors. All proceeds from the project went to bene t AIDS Athens. Each original dog statue was auctioned or sold for $1000-$1500 in fall 2010. Walters said the eBay auction raised more than $20,000 for AIDS Athens. AIDS Athens serves to address the needs of individuals infected and a ected by HIV/ AIDS through support services and to prevent the spread of the disease through education and outreach. How has/did the We Let the Dawgs Out project change Athens? Our bulldogs have given people one more reason to visit Athens and experience all our city has to offer. Our bulldog art exhibit has not only highlighted local artists and the masterpieces they have created, but also bene ted local charities. is project has been an outstanding example of how various city, art and private sectors can become involved in a single project in order to further the arts in a community, said co-chair, Linda Ford.

The Athens-Oconee Junior Womans Club has exciting plans for 2011, including shifting their multitude of volunteer hours to cover serious needs in the community, such as childhood obesity and education of the areas poor. Aside from the We Let the Dawgs Out project they organized two popular community events - The annual Oconee Easter Egg Hunt and the annual Running with the Dawgs. Their fundraisers have enabled them to help organizations and benet women and children. The Junior Womans Club is currently focused on their Partner in Education, Fowler Drive Elementary School.

2011 Locked, Loaded & Ready To Win

Football season is off in the distance, but its a distance that we can see a ickering light. That light is that of running back Isaiah Crowell and quarterback Aaron Murray. With Caleb King being declared ineligible, the true freshman and the sophomore will lead the way for the Bulldog offense. We already know Murray can handle the pressure, after a stellar yet surprising 2010 freshman campaign. Question is, can the young Crowell handle the bulk of the running duties? The Bulldog defense will be paced by cornerback Brandon Boykin, who will start his senior season on the Nagurski Watch List, which means the Bulldogs career leader in kickoff return yards is a heck of a defender. The defense will miss the likes of Justin Houston, but theres enough overall talent on the defensive side of the ball. Many pundits claim that Coach Richt is on the proverbial hot seat, but the schools brass have backed the veteran coach, saying his job is not in jeopardy. Even with a sophomore QB and true freshman starting RB, the offense has some potency and the coaching staff will be charged with squeezing everything out of them.

Opening with a Bang!

Leave it to the Bulldog football team to open in style. Sure, the Boise State Broncos will come with a top-25 ranking, but theyll be in their rst contest without whiz-kid offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin at the controls of their high-powered offense. Expect a gutwrenching game but with the contest in our home state, well give the edge to the Dawg Nation.

A Quick Step Back?

am

Fresh off a possible win against Boise State, the Bulldogs face another top-25 program in South Carolina. This will be a tough one for the defense, as South Carolina is loaded on offense and despite this being our home opener, it could push us to a 1-1 record. This is one of the more important conference games, and just so happens to be the opener. The Gamecock offense might just be too much for us, even at home.

Ah, a Cupcake!
At this point, the team is likely 1-1. To get back on track, we need the sugary sweetness of a cupcake. Enter Coastal Carolina, which will be overmatched in every sense of the word. They got destroyed by a somewhat-competent West Virginia team last season, and should be more of the same here against the Dawgs.

If this one were in Athens, it could be construed as another cupcake. Yeah, the Rebels will struggle to compete in the SEC this season. They lost six of their nal seven games in 2010 and struggled mightily on defense. We expect this to be a banner game for Aaron Murray.

Who Let the Dogs Out?

Sorry for the clich title, but its gonna be a Dog vs. Dog battle in Athens. MSU had a solid 2010 campaign, winning six contests in a row, including a 10-7 game at Florida. Theyll miss their defensive coordinator, though, and could struggle some on offense. Expect a lower-scoring affair, with the Dawgs pulling ahead late.

Balanced Offense: The offense should be good, with Aaron Murray a year older, wiser and stronger. He doesnt have an A.J. Green to throw to, but someone should step up to be his go-to guy. And true freshman Isaiah Crowell has to be as good as advertised, maybe better. And with Caleb King gone, someone else has to step up to pick up the slack when Crowell isnt in there.

UGA: 20 MSU: 17

TENNESSEE

Oct. 8th

Dominant D: The defense cant just be good; it has to be borderline great. There are so many good offenses AND defenses in the SEC, you cant get away with just putting a bunch of points on the board. Your defense has to make plays. Someone in the front seven has to become a star. Special Teams: As mentioned above, the Dawgs do have a solid kick return game, led by Brandon Boykin. The rest of the special teams needs to be special, too, as this is a game of inches and there will be a few nailbiters in 2011. If the special teams make plays, the Dawgs will prevail more often than not.

Knockin Down in Knoxville

The offense should be ring on all cylinders here as the team travels north to Knoxville. The Volunteers did nish on a nice 4-game win streak in 2010, but they were wins against lesser opponents, and they also lost the previous 4 games to more quality opponents, including a 41-14 beatdown against the Dawgs. Expect more of the same here in 2011.

Another away game, technically, but its another short trip for the Dawgs as they head north to Nashville to take on a Commodore team that lost their nal seven games in 2010. Once again, its time for the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Florida will be led by new head coach Will Muschamp and will be coming off a killer 3-game stretch against Alabama, LSU and Auburn. Will they be fatigued? Florida should still be sportin a top-25 ranking at this point, but the Dawgs could be as well. This is a toss-up if there ever was one. Given the fact the Gators will have had three tough matchups ahead of this and the Bulldogs should be well-prepared, well side with the Dawgs!

Cam Newton is gone, as well as a host of other stars that studded the Tiger lineup in 2010. That should give the young Dawgs hope as they welcome the National Champs to Athens. Wild One Against the Wildcats

At this point, the SEC picture should be getting more and more clear. Hopefully, the Dawgs will have a chance at the crown. This game could prove critical, although the Wildcats may just be playing the role of spoiler here. As in 2010, there should be some scoring.

UGA: 41 Kentucky: 27

GEORGIA TECH

Rivalry Roundup
The Dawgs will hopefully need this game as a tune-up for the SEC Championship, also to be played in Atlanta. Tech will always create problems with their unique offense, but the Dawgs D should be able to clamp down. And by this point, Isaiah Crowell will hopefully be a chainmover, allowing the offense to plug away and keep the Yellow Jacket offense off the eld. Expect a win, but it might not be pretty.

UGA: 27 Georgia Tech: 24 Yes, were projecting a one-loss regular season. The team doesnt travel more than 325 miles for any of its games, and faces many of the SECs best at home. To boot, theyll face Florida at the tail end of a tough stretch of games for the Gators. Even without Caleb King, the offense should ourish under Aaron Murray, and were expecting the defense to have a couple of playmakers. The Bulldogs could struggle against the SEC Wests best in Alabama, making a run at a national title unlikely. But a top bowl perhaps even a BCS game is certainly possible. Go Dawgs!

Tavarres King Wide Reciever 61 192 lbs

Key Player Tavarres King

With Caleb King gone, Tavarres King will be the royalty on the Bulldog offense. Hell have to be Aaron Murrays go-to guy in the pass offense. He doesnt have to be A.J. Green good, but doubling up on his 504 yards in 2010 would be great. King is big, fast, and should be able to get separation from defenders this season. If he can haul in 6-7 TDs along with 1,000+ yards, it should spell success for the Dawg offense. And as a sidenote caveat, if Isaiah Crowell is a super-stud, the passing offense will have even more opportunities to shine. So lets hope this freshman is sensational.

MURRAY THE THERS BRO AN A SPORT

24 | SEPTEMBER 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

n the south, football is more than a sport it is a religion that is practiced every Saturday and in Athens it all goes down between the hedges. Every team has the same positions and every player is just as important as the next to keep the team together and the score up. e University of Georgia Bulldogs have one particular player that everyone is taking about. He is charming, witty, loves Harry Potter and knows his football he is Aaron Murray. Aaron has been a key player to the bulldogs as UGAs rst string quarterback in 2010 and hopefully starting the team o with a strong season in 2011. Aaron had opportunity that most players do not he played alongside his older brother, Josh Murray, who played an in uential role in Aarons life as well as on the Bulldogs team as a whole.

an unbelievable experience, I would have never thought about it until Aaron chose to attend here, Josh said.

OUTSIDE
e Field Getting time away from practice, workouts and games has proven to be a struggle between the Murray brothers. Aaron may be in the spotlight the majority of his time at college but he is just a down home guy that could be content doing nothing. I love watching moves, I watch a movie almost every night before I go to bed, Aaron laughed as he described himself. I also like to play video games and hang out with the guys. All the guys from the team are like my brothers. It is like our own fraternity. I am just a typical guy. Aaron and Josh do not just share the same DNA, they also enjoy the same activities as well. We keep each other grounded, I wouldnt trade the time we get to spend together outside the eld for anything, Josh stated. I am lucky to attend the same college as him so we can do those things together.

of his life and the drive that he has to get him where he wants in life, Josh said about younger brother Aaron. e Murray brothers mother and father are very dedicated to showing their support for their sons. eir parents attend every single game whether it is home or away. Aaron looks up to his father, trying to model himself after him, He is relentless in pursuing the job and making sure it gets done said Aaron of his father. He only ever asks for new socks because that is all that he needs. I hope to be like him when I raise my own family.

SPOTLIGHT
Being in the spotlight is never an easy task but Aaron takes it very gracefully; he loves his fans and tries to show them as much support as they show him. Aaron is very humble about his experience at UGA and his opportunities with the football team, It shocks me when parents come up to me and say their daughter is too shy to say hey to me in class, I just tell them that I wont bite and I am a student just like them, Aaron said as he laughed about the situation. Josh has Aarons best interest at heart and wants others to see how special they themselves are as Josh said, Everyone has a talent, some peoples talent may be in academics, business, writing or art; Aarons talent happens to be in football. Without all of those other talents then society wouldnt be able to function. All aspects of Aarons life are essential to making up who he is and how he performs on the eld. Every journey he has conquered and supporter along the way are like the stitches in a football, even without one the ball falls apart; he has accomplished what he has with the resources he has for a reason and that makes him the exceptional football player he has grown into today.
STUDYBREAKS.COM | SEPTEMBER 2011 | 25

BEGINNING
e Murray brothers had high hopes of taking their athletic talents and making a name for themselves. Aaron started playing football at age ten and fell in love with the intensity, action and thrills it gave him while on the eld. Aaron knew from an early age that he needed to put all of his e orts into perfecting the skills needed to be great at it. Freshman year of high school I knew football was my sport, and from then on I have never looked back, said Aaron. Josh started with a route that involved a bat instead of shoulder pads. Josh played baseball for several years, but soon realized that the sport lacked the intensity that he craved. With Aaron moving away to college to attend UGA, Josh realized he had a great opportunity right in front of him to play alongside his younger brother. Family is important to us, when we have the opportunity to stick together we do. It has been

FAMILY
Aaron and Josh have six years between them. Finding similarities between a pre-teen and a high school senior is a tough job but as with most siblings, the di erences kept shrinking until there were almost none by the time Aaron started college alongside his big brother Josh. Family is very important to both of these brothers, It was such a blessing for Josh to come up here and to have someone look after me, said Aaron. At the time I was battling out for a quarterback position and it was great to have some guidance in my life and someone there to help me through the tough times. Believe it or not but Josh also looks up to Aaron as well, I love seeing all the passion that Aaron puts towards all aspects

FOOTBALL FACTS

Sagittarius
Create a study group. No hot friends allowed. Youll never get any studying done.

Although an NFL football game can last up to three hours the ball is really only in play for about 11 minutes. During a football game, Georgia Tech once beat Cumberland University 222-0. The huddle in a football game was created by deaf football players. This technique was to prevent the opposing team to read their plays through sign language. When youre watching a football game on television, more than 56% of plays shown are ones you have already seen, replayed.
