The Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community (HFCC) welcomed the Apostolic Nuncio to Korea, His Excellency Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla, DD last Sunday, August 31, 2008 in front of St. Benedict Church. HFCC volunteers and Filipino-Korean children gave flowers and greeted the Apostolic Nuncio. Archbishop Padilla is the first Filipino Apostolic Nuncio (a Diplomatic Ambasssador from the Holy Sea) appointed by Pope John Paul II to Panama in 1990. His Emminence led the Filipino Community in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. He was glad to see hundreds of Filipino workers in Korea gathered on that day. He felt like home. In his homily, he said that he can feel and understand the longing to be in our country and to be with our family. He considered himself as migrant because he left our country in 1963. He said the Holy Family can be our example and the source of our strength because they were migrants too. He also said God loves us always, everyday and in every moment of our lives.

Reception was held at the coffee shop of St. Benedict Church.

One of the most significant holidays in Korea is the Chusok. As foreigners we share in their celebration and therefore we should understand its significance and how Koreans celebrate it. Aside from the famous traffic jam going to the countryside during this celebration, it has its deeper meaning and significance.

great day in the middle of August. It occurs during the harvest season. Thus, Korean families take this time to thank their ancestors for providing them with rice and fruits.

Chusok is believed to have originated during the ancient Shilla Kingdom, when a month-long weaving festival was held. For the contest, the Chusok, Bountiful Abundance, also known king divided the city into teams and appointed as the Korean Thanksgiving, is held on the 15th princesses to lead them. The king announced the day of the 8th lunar month. Chusok means a winner on the day of the eighth full moon and the losing team had to provide food, drink, and entertainment and a party involving the whole city followed. The celebration starts on the night before Chusok and ends on the day after the holiday. Thus, many Korean families take three days off from work to get together with family and friends. The celebration starts with a family gettogether at which rice cakes called "Songphyun" are served. These special rice cakes are made of rice, beans, sesame seeds, and chestnuts. Then the family pays respect to ancestors by visiting

The Korean hanbok represents http://www.familyculture.com/holidays/chusok.htm one of the most visable aspects of Korean culture. http://www.seoul-gchs.seoul.kr/~helpme/att/korea/ke/ke3.htm The top part called a jeogori is blouse-like with long sleeves with the men's version being longer, stretching down to the waist. Women wear skirts (chima) while men wear baggy pants (paji). Commoners wore white, except during festivals and special occassions such as weddings. Clothes for the upper classes were made of bright colors and indicated the wearer's social status. Various accessories such as foot gear, jewelry, and headdresses or hair pins completed the outfit.

In the evening, children wear their favorite hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) and dance under the bright moon in a large circle. They play games and sing songs. Like the American Thanksgiving, Chusok is the time to celebrate with the family and give thanks for their blessings

On this day, the Koreans make rice based preparations. Though they eat rice and other foods in their normal days but on Ch'usok, they make lots of things special for their ancestors. The rice cake, "Songphyun" is made of rice, beans, sesame seeds, & chestnuts.

Pagninilay:

Bevi Tamargo

There are times, when life here in Korea is not easy. Sometimes, the loneliness sinks in. And you start to
miss friends, and people left behind. My bestfriends dad died two days ago. I had always been very close to her family. Their house was like a second home to me. And I remember Tito. He was so nice and strong and down-to-earth. And I always felt at home in their house. Homeyes, perhaps that is the feeling Ive been searching for. Not a place. But a feeling. A very powerful and wonderful feeling. It is for this reason that I decided to join the Filipino Community at Hyehwa. For the feeling of home. To find another home away from home. I remember when my own dad died. My best friend was there for me. And I wish I could have been there for her. But as I couldnt, then I called her up. She didnt seem sad. It seems she had accepted the fact and it was a peaceful parting. I called her up last night. And at first she greeted me excitedly, but then she remembered that her father was dead, and we forced ourselves to be somber. It was a very awkward moment. Like we were actually happy but we knew we should be sad. The weird thing was that she kept on asking me how I was. Was I okay here. And that I could always call her whenever I was in trouble. It was kind of weird. Awkward really. Shouldnt I be the one comforting her? How did she sense that I wasnt okay? Was her intuition that strong? Was it that obvious? I only said hello I felt lighter after that conversation. I found out that friendship and love can stretch out across the seas. Across all the dark times. Miles and miles awaywas someone that cared.

CATHOLIC FAITH:

lege; after original sin, it was lost for all Adams posterity, until the time of the Redemption dawned in Mary. (Cf. I Cor. 15:2123). Look at Immaculate Conception The September 8 date of the Nativity helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 (nine months earlier). The Church has celebrated Mary's birth since at least the sixth century. Scripture does not give an account of Mary's birth. However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian piety. According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child that will advance God's plan of salvation for the world. Such a story (like many biblical counterparts) stresses the special presence of God in Mary's life from the beginning. St. Augustine connects Mary's birth with Jesus' saving work. He tells the earth to rejoice and shine forth in the light of her birth. "She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed." Birthday celebrations bring happiness to the celebrant as well as to family and friends. Next to the birth of Jesus, Mary's birth offers the greatest possible happiness to the world. Each time we celebrate her birth we can confidently hope for an increase of peace in our hearts and in the world at large.

We usually do not celebrate the birthday of the Saints, but rather their "birthday to heaven," that is, the anniversary of their death, considered as the beginning of their blessed life with God. Nevertheless, there are two exceptions, Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, since we commemorate not only their birthday to heaven, but also their nativity, their coming to this earth... and the reason is because both were the only saints born without sin.

- Virgin Mary: Nativity on September 8. Death, Assumption of http://www.religion-cults.com/saints/september8.htm Mary... She is the Immaculate Conception, conceived without sin - St. John Baptist: Birth: June 24. Death: August 29... Birth without sin promised in Luke 1:15 and fulfilled in Luke 1:41 The nations celebrate, often too noisily, the birthdays of the great ones of this earth... How then ought we, Christians, to rejoice in that of the Virgin Mary, Mother of our Salvation, and to present publicly to God the homage of our best praises and thanksgiving for the great mercies. The birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary announced joy and the approaching salvation of a lost world. Mary was brought into the world not like other children of Adam, infected with the contagion of sin, but pure, holy, beautiful, and glorious, adorned with all the most precious graces fitting for the One predestined to be the Mother of the Savior. Never did She have the slightest inclination towards anything other than the absolute and immediate Will of God. She appeared indeed in the weak condition of all mortals, but in the eyes of Heaven She already transcended the highest seraphim in purity, humility, charity, and the richest ornaments of grace. God had created Her in the original grace, as in the beginning Adam and Eve had enjoyed that ineffable priviPage 4
