HFCC Everland Adventure

February 01, 2009

It was a bright and chilly Monday on January 26, 2009 as we made way to Everland Theme Park. We met at Hansung station, drove for almost an hour while hitting some notes at the in-house noraebang (videoke) at the bus. The time was about 10 in the morning and upon reaching the parking lot of the 7th largest theme park in the world (and definitely Korea's most famous), the whole Hyewadong Filipino Catholic Community had their childs heart come back to life. It was a public holiday since its a Lunar New Year. Definitely, the crowd was crazy and there were The HFCC Adventurers preparing to enjoy the ride-allyou-can treat at Everland on January 26, 2009. throngs and throngs of tourists and local visitors. We could not get over our amazement. Although not as legendary as Disneyland, yet Everland in Korea is one of the country's proudest achievement and a must Magic Land. -see attraction. Everland opened in 1976, and it is about 2 We were lucky though because of the promo for 1,200,000yd . Experience wonderful Festivals and magnificent shows at Everland, 365 d a y s a y e a r . There are five theme areas along with more than 50 kinds of attractions full of high thrilling and various fun. There are lots of attractions inside including: Restaurants (Oriental, Western, etc.), Gift Shops (Grand Emporium, etc.), Columbus Great Exploration, Rolling X Train, Let's Twist, AESOP'S VILLAGE, T Express ( the steepest and longest roller coaster ride that we missed since they closed it temporarily due to strong winter winds during that day), Safari, Display of Animals, Performance of Animals, and last but not the least is the Snow Buster, which is the reason why we went this winter in order for us to enjoy the snow by ice skates or simple downhill slide. Whatever your wimps or fancies may be, Everland has just about everything for anyone. While you are there, just enjoy, relax, and bring back the child in you. This is a great opportunity to bond with your family, build team spirit, and meet new friends. Surely, a good moment for everyone especially for the first timers in this park. Its a great relief for the stress brought by work and worries back home.

discount in the One Day Ride-all-you-can ticket. The theme for this season is Snow Festival. During the tour, the whole group checked-in their lockers first, and each of us has separated their own ways and went on several rides of varying degree of speed, height and "wetness". We were amazed on how big this park is, we also compared it to our very own Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna (where I hailed from). Equipped with a map of the overall theme park and strategically planning the next place to go, we were able to get along just fine. To get to the main theme park, that is where the cable car comes in where we hopped and enjoyed. There are six parks on Everland: Festival World, Caribbean Bay, Speedway, Activa Park, HomeBridge Hostel, and Glen Ross Golf Club. But during this time of the year which is winter, we can only go to the theme park, since some of the places are closed for the summer, spring, and fall. The theme park comprises of: Global Fair, Zootopia, American Adventure, European Adventure,

The Basis of Korean Food-Spices

Koreans traditionally believe that the taste and quality of food depends on its spices and sauces, the essential ingredients to making a delicious meal. Therefore, soybean paste, soy sauce, red pepper, paste and kimchi are some of the healthiest and the most important staple in a Korean household.

Dried Squid)

Jwipo is a type of dried fish. At street carts, jwipo and dried squid are roasted over a bed of pebbles.

PAGNINILAY:

CATHOLIC FAITH:
Candlemas (Presentation Feast) Definition and Summary The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, commonly called Candlemas, commemorates the presentation of Christ in the temple and the ritual purification of the Virgin Mary. The feast falls on February 2nd. Prayers: Candlemas Prayers Basic Facts About Candlemas Liturgical Color(s): White Type of Holiday: Time of Year: Duration: Feast February 2 One Day This procession into the church for Mass commemorates Christ's entrance into the temple. Since Vatican II, the feast is reckoned a feast of the Lord (as opposed to a feast of Mary), and officially designated "The presentation of the Lord." History Egeria, writing around AD 380, attests to a feast of the Presentation in the Jerusalem Church. It was kept on February 14th. The day was kept by a procession to the Constantinian basilica of the Resurrection, with a homily on Luke 2:22-39. However, the feast had no proper name at this point; it was simply called the 40th day after Epiphany. This shows that the Jerusalem church celebrated Jesus' birth on the Epiphany Feast (as is common in some Eastern Churches today). In regions where Christ's birth was celebrated on December 25th, the feast began to be celebrated on February 2nd, where it is kept in the West today. In 542, the Emperor Justinian introduced the feast to the entire Eastern Roman empire in thanksgiving for the end to a great pestilence afflicting the city of Constantinople. Perhaps this is when Pope Gregory I brought the feast to Rome. Either way, by the 7th century, it is contained in the Gelasianum Sacramentary. Pope Sergius (687-701) introduced the procession to the Candlemas service. The blessing of candles did not come into common use until the 11th century. While some scholars have asserted that the Candlemas feast was developed in the Middle Ages to counteract the pagan feasts of Imbolc and Lupercalia, many scholars reject this, based on Medieval documents. While the feast does coincide with these two pagan holidays, the origins of the feast are based in Scriptural chronology. Some superstitions developed about Candlemas, including the belief that if one does not take down Christmas decorations by Candlemas, traces of the holly and berries will bring about the death of the person involved. In past times, Candlemas was seen as the end of the Christmas season. Candlemas Day was also the day when some cultures predicted weather patterns. Farmers believed that the remainder of winter would be the opposite of whatever the weather was like on Candlemas Day. An old English song goes: If Candlemas be fair and bright, Come winter, have another flight; If Candlemas bring clouds and rain, Go winter, and come not again. Thus if the sun cast a shadow on Candlemas day, more winter was on the way; if there was no shadow, winter was thought to be ending soon. This practice led to the folklore behind "Groundhog's Day," which falls on Candlemas Day. Today, the feast is still celebrated on February 14th in some Eastern Churches, including the Armenian Church, where the feast is called, "The Coming of the Son of God into the Temple." Most churches celebrate it on February 2nd.

Celebrates/Symbolizes: The presentation of Jesus in the temple and the ritual purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary Alternate Names: Candlemas, Feast of the presentation of Christ in the Temple, Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin, Hypapante tou kyriou ("meeting of the Lord"). Scriptural References: Leviticus 12:1-4; Luke 2:22-39 Introduction The Feast of the Presentation, often called Candlemas, commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the presentation of Christ in the temple, which took place 40 days after his birth as Jewish law required. According to Mosaic law, a mother who had given birth to a boy was considered unclean for seven days. Also, she was to remain 33 days "in the blood of her purification." Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord. They also went to sacrifice a pair of doves or two young pigeons, showing that Mary and Joseph were poor. Once in the temple, Jesus was purified by the prayer of Simeon, in the presence of Anna the prophetess. Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis: Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled: My own eyes have seen the salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Simeon told Mary, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against, (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." Simeon thus foreshadowed the crucifixion and the sorrows of Mary at seeing the death of her Son. The name Candlemas comes from the activities associated with the feast. It came to be known as the Candle Mass. In the Western Church, a procession with lighted candles is the distinctive rite. According to post Vatican-II discipline, (if possible) the beeswax candles are to be blessed somewhere other than where the Mass is held. Often your local parish will hand out candles, or you may bring your own, to be blessed before the procession. These may be saved for later use in your home. After an antiphon, during which the candles held by the people are lighted, there is a procession into the church. During the procession to the church, the Nunc Dimittis is sung, with the antiphon "Lumen ad revelationem" (Luke 2:32).

Karunungan:
One evening, a few years ago while visiting my home town, I came upon a scene where policemen were trying to control a drunkard who was shouting in vile language and, in general, disturbing the peace. While I was watching, the Mater came along. The Master, now retired, had been our, mine and the drunkards very respected teacher in grade three. At a time when other teachers still used a cane he preferred to try to arouse the interest of his students in their studies, and when that happened there was seldom a discipline problem. The police were just about to use violence on the shouting drunkard when the Master asked them to let him talk to the man. He walked up close and said, Jim, sober up boy and go home quietly and do not be making a fool out of yourself. In seconds, the man transformed and became as if he had never taken a drink. Good evening, Master, he said. Then he said to the policemen in a meek voice, Im sorry if I caused you any trouble, and he walked home quietly.

truth by interpreting or commenting upon the sacred text. His perception and interpretation of the truth is direct and unmediated. He does not lay claim to the authority of a prophet. Or to a prophetic calling or vision to authenticate his words. He refuses to produce any kind of sign from heaven to prove that he can speak from God. He expected people to see the truth of what he was doing and saying without relying on any authority at all. The only authority that Jesus might be said to have appealed to was the authority of truth itself. He did not make authority his truth but made truth his authority. Jesus did not expect others to obey him: he expected them to obey the truth. And as truth comes from God he was expecting them to obey God. This is why the people were astonished at the way he taught for he taught as one having authority, and not like the teachers of the Law. To appeal to the authority of another is probably the second weakest way in which to establish truth; the weakest is to appeal to ones own: it is right because I say so. This is a return to power, to might is right thinking. Unemployment on the rise back home due to global recession

The reports in the newspapers, internets, forums, blogs and documentaries have just been about company shutdowns, bankruptcy filings, manpower lay-offs, reduced work days, salary freeze or decrement, for sheer survival to stay afloat. It was previously thought that the Philippines would be spared because of its poorer economic state, but it is not so. The countrys semiconductor and electronics sectors are seriously battered, as with other parts of the world. Most of them are situated in Economic Processing Zones and Light Industry or Science Parks in Cavite , Laguna, and Batangas. Just read below the adverse developments of the following firms, among others, as of this time: 1. Andes - 8 days a month work or 2 days a week 2. Temic, closed its plants in Germany and Poland and retrenched people in the Philippines . Now on a 4 days, 2 shifts 3. NEC Tokin from thousands of employees to just 700 today, 1 week per month plant shut down 4. Yazaki Torres 2 days a week 5. Fujitsu zero OT, 4 days a week 6. Amkor anam separated 700 people including indirects, applied for another 2000 reduction with DOLE 7. IBIDEN in FPIP closing down 8. TDK 2 days a week 9. Wistron laid off 1000 workers 10. Toshiba closed down 3 out of 6 assembly lines 11. IMI retrenched 20% of its work force, this is believed to be in thousands. 12. PSI 4 days work week 13. Miyoshi 5 days, 2 shifts 14. Maxim 5 days, 2 shifts 15. Accenture laid off 500 people 16. Advantec laid off 100 people and will close in June to transfer to China 17. Google Philippines laid off people too 18. As per Inquirer dated 21 Jan 2009, 35,000 workers had already been displaced in the PEZA zones

The TUCP asked the labor department to provide assistance not only to displaced Overseas Filipino Workers (like some of our kababayans here in Korea who dont have a choice but to return to our country) but also to local employees who lost their jobs. Assistance, according to Herrera, should include six months of emergency unemployment loans from the Social Security System, extra child support insurance for those with at least one toddler, additional direct cash transfers from DOLE and/or the Department of Social Welfare and Development, preferential treatment of their children in the grant of school tuition subsidy or government scholarships and skills retooling programs to help them find new employment elsewhere. So in this regard, those who have jobs, please keep and love it and be grateful you have one. While those who are in the look out, you are not alone, there are plenty like you back home so dont despair and be discouraged and just keep in hoping and praying you will soon land a good job.
