the scoop
Hi all

SEP 7

2011

Gabby, Olivia and Sophie enjoying a fun day up at The Remarkables on our first ever ski trip with the snow and weather coming to the party.

Our ski trip participants had a wonderful fun day at the Remarkables ski area last Friday. While we endured some interesting weather they enjoyed crisp sunshine! Out of the 64 students who went over 30 of them were skiing for the first time. A big thank you to Mark and Hamish who organised the day and to all our parents who went, which meant the mountain was saturated with Myross Bush support! Tomorrow afternoon, at 1.30pm, every child gets the opportunity to participate in a 45 minute highly entertaining and 'Rhythm Interactive' stage performance. This is entirely performed through mime as part of the theme "Action Speaks Louder than Words", with each student given an African styled hand drum that they use to participate. This is followed by a short presentation and a 15 minute Q&A session. The staff had the opportunity to be a part of this show at the recent conference in the term break and it is something that we are excited about being able to give as an opportunity to our students. Due to our Activity Centre operating as a 'Learning Centre' during the renovation period we

will bus the children along to the hall. You are welcome to come along tomorrow to see the whole school in action at this time! The school is also purchasing 10 of these drums (thanks to Aviary fundraising!) after the performance to extend our music resource for beat and rhythm activities. The cost of this show and the bus is largely being covered by the school but we do need your support of $2 per student to help. This will be added to your family account. Please note that any cost put to parents account is taken seriously as I am aware that it can feel that bills just keep growing and coming! The school endeavors to resource as much of our learning programmes as it can but as a Decile 10 designated school our government funding is adjusted accordingly. This means Decile 1 schools get more funding per student and at the other end of the scale Decile 10 schools get the least per student. Therefore, your continued financial support is a very important element of the home & school partnership for giving our children every opportunity to enjoy a range of learning experiences.

The first classroom block to be renovated is nearly there! Sometime next week Rooms 2 & 3 will transition back into their 'fresh' environments and Rooms 4 & 5 will move into the 'learning' centre so the next stage of the renovation can begin! While this is sounds easy written down it is actually a mammoth undertaking, as anyone who has had to move rooms for renovation at home will know! Our teachers take the learning programme of all our children very seriously and while this is a short term pain for a very positive long term gain your understanding and consideration for our teachers is appreciated. School life, like any workplace, is full on and we all need to support and encourage each other in full on times like this! Last week saw the first of our 'unassembly's' and the parents that made it enjoyed the opportunity to see their child's room in action. Keep an eye on the news and views and the class blogs to see what they're up to for the coming weeks! We look forward to seeing you again this Friday! Regards, Tim Lovelock

Community Planting:
happening at Bushy Point, Otatara on 11 September 2011. The planting is part of the Living Legends project and at Bushy Point we will be planting 5000 native plants in just a few hours. What you may not know is that as well as All Black rugby legend Kevin Laidlaw attending, Bug Man Ruud Kleinpaste will also be there. Its the only Living Legends event he is attending so we are very lucky. The day will start at 9.30am walking through from the Bryson Road entrance, speeches at 10am and planting soon after, lunch provided, more planting if necessary, finishing around 3pm. The major organising and advertising for the event is done by Living Legends nationally and they will be in touch with people by email when you register. If you want to get a free bus from Invercargill to the site you will need to register at www.livinglegends.co.nz, and that will also give an idea of how many people to cater for (but we wont turn you away if you havent registered!). Lunch, and activities for children. This event is also a Southland Conservation Week activity and DOC are providing a big marquee with some space for groups to put their displays. Parking will be in a paddock, if you can car pool or take the bus from town that will help.

If you would like to read one, keep an eye on the Room 4 blog over the next few weeks. In maths we continue to learn about fractions. Check our the Woodlands site for some fun fraction games (On the Room 4 Blog). We enjoyed learning about melting and discussing our ideas about what is happening to the particles as they melt. materials by cooling, heating and mixing, and we are looking forward to making up our own experiments. In writing, we have been learning how to create a picture in our readers head by using describing words. We are getting great at retelling stories with drama. We know to look at the audience and to make our faces and bodies tell the story. We are looking forward to moving to our new space soon! We welcome Mrs Hughes who will be teaching on Thursday and Friday this week.
