Christine Leaf, the mother of Tina Anderson, weeps while at the witness stand on the first day of the trial of Ernest Willis on Purchase photo reprints at PhotoExtra charges that he raped Anderson in 1997, when she was 15 years old.
By Maddie Hanna / Monitor staff May 24, 2011 The mother of the woman who says she was raped by a fellow member of Trinity Baptist Church twice in 1997 testified this morning that she did what she could to report her then-teenage daughter's allegations. Christine Leaf said she contacted the Concord police after 15year-old Tina Anderson told her she was pregnant by Ernest Willis, a married man who also went to the Clinton Street church and whose children Anderson babysat. Leaf said she then sent her daughter to Colorado to live with a couple that knew the former Trinity Baptist pastor, Chuck

Phelps. By the time that happened, the Concord police hadn't interviewed Anderson about what had happened. Leaf testified that she never gave them Anderson's phone number in Colorado "because they never asked." Anderson, now 29 and living in Arizona, agreed to be interviewed by the police last year. Willis was then arrested on charges he forcibly raped Anderson twice in the summer of 1997, and his trial began yesterday in Merrimack County Superior Court. Willis admits to having sex with Anderson once but says it was consensual. He pleaded guilty to one count of statutory rape last week. Leaf said this morning that Anderson didn't report being forcibly raped when she told her mother she was pregnant. "She never really told me anything, but she never said to me it was rape," Leaf said. She and Anderson no longer have a relationship. Several former Trinity Baptist members also testified this morning, saying they remembered when Willis and Anderson stood before the congregation during a part of the service they said was referred to as "church discipline." During that session, Willis apologized for being unfaithful to his wife, church members said. They said Phelps spoke for Anderson, who had to stand because she had become pregnant. The trial continues this afternoon. For a full report, read tomorrow's Monitor.

The photo caption states "Christine Leaf mother of Tina Anderson". Sorry she may be a boilogical mother but no way can she be considered Tina's mother. She lost the right to be called a mother many years ago!! Login or register to post comments

I wouldn't have waited for someone to ask me for anything - I would have been at the hospital, police station, wherever I had to be to get justice for my daughter, immediately. Going to the pastor doesn't count. Login or register to post comments
