OPORTUNITIES FOR PREMEDICAL STUDENTS Volunteering: September 10th National Day of Service and Rememberance: in honor and recognition

n of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, HandsOn Central California is hosting the Human Race. The Human Race is the Central Valley's newest collaborative community fundraiser. The event consists of a 2 mile walk and the United We Serve Volunteer, Safety & Preparedness Fair. At the Sierra Vista Mall with a $10 dollar registration fee. September 23rd Monopoly Mania: The event begins with a lively social hour with no-host cocktails, a variety of delicious hors d'oeuvres provided by the Valley's best restaraunts, and live music, and our signature Monopoly Martini's. Players then take their positions at their game tables and compete for 90 fast, fun and loud minutes. Waiters attend to your every need while Mr. Monopoly and Lady Luck give out random prizes and goodies. Dessert is served while the bankers determine the winning high roller at each table. Those winners are placed in a grand prize lottery for a fabulous trip to Las Vegas! The Grand Prize winner then names their favorite local non-profit for the Community Chest Award of $1,000. Come out, enjoy the fun, and win a trip to Las Vegas! If tickets are bought before Sept. 6th they are $40 and if purchased later are $45. October 22nd Make a Difference Day: Behind the ideas and efforts toward building a better world, volunteers fuel a movement of compassion and connection. Each year in October, this movement engages our community and our nation in service on National Make A Difference Day. This National Day of Service is the largest of its kind. Over 3 million Americans come together annually to complete community based projects through volunteer efforts throughout the nation.These projects have the combined goal of uniting our community as neighbors and beautifying the places we live and work. Join HandsOn for our 2011 Make A Difference Day on October 22nd. November 19th Serving Fresno Day: Decmber 18th Hope for the Holidays: Hope for the Holidays is an annual Holiday Dinner Celebration for homeless and displaced families in the Fresno Unified School District. This event is held by HandsOn Central California in partnership with Fresno Unified School District: Project Access. Each year hundreds of

volunteers help to give the families served a holiday celebration to remember complete with a full holiday dinner, family activities like cookie and ornament decorating, family pictures, and a special visit from Santa Claus himself. Bulldog Pantry Helping the physician at the Poverello House or at some of the rural clinics. Volunteering at the Saturday afternoon free health clinic (call Tower Family Health Center, 264-7062) Volunteering at hospices, e.g. Nancy Hinds Hospice Nursing homes for elderly people The Marjorie Mason Center (Women's Shelter) Homes for the developmentally disabled and mental health centers Thrift stores that support non-profits and charitable organizations Physician shadowing Scribe program, a paid, 16 to 18 hours per week medical experience with a twoyear commitment. Nearly thirty pre-med and medical students currently work side-by-side with physicians as scribes at Saint Agnes Medical Center Emergency Department. After receiving a crash course on anatomy, medical charting, and medications, they assist with patient charting, ordering diagnostic tests, and ordering medications for emergency physicians. This program not only provides better patient care, but also gives actual clinical experience for the dedicated pre-medical student. The web site is: http://www.fresnoscribe.com. Natural Science NSCI 110 Particulum of Medicine o prerequisite: permission of instructor. The Academic Research Associate Program is
offered in association with the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Premedical students working at University Medical Center with health professionals will aid biomedical research efforts and have opportunities for clinical observation. CR/NC grading only.

Socialogy 147 Medical Sociology o Political and economic organization of American medical health care system and crosscultural comparisons. Analysis of social relations and interactions among members of the health professions affecting designations of persons as ill and their subsequent treatment.

RESEARCH Research Another activity that can improve your odds at getting accepted is to engage in undergraduate research. The College of Science and Mathematics has many faculty who are eager to have undergraduates work on interesting projects. In Chemistry, Drs. Attar, Choi, Hasson, Golden, Goto, Krishnan, Maitra, Miller, and Person are the most likely to have projects. Look up their office hours on the bulletin board outside the Chemistry office, and stop by and chat with them. It would help if you had at least the first year of general chemistry completed. The same goes for the other departments in the College. Check with the Chair of each to learn who engages in undergraduate research, and stop by their offices during an office hour to see if they would have something for you. Many of these projects may lead to results suitable for publication, or to presentations at professional meetings. Either way, they look very good on your resume.
