Supervisor: Dr. Felix AKORLI

GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1 .BACKGROUND The term wireless communication is referred to any type of electrical or electronic operation which is achieved without any hard-wired connection. At the end of last century, it has been mentioned that the demand of wireless services have grown up and the existing wireless technologies are used to satisfy the enormous growth of the demand on broadband Wireless access everywhere and every time . Wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) have been trying for wireless technologies that make wireless metro access possible .Access to areas that are too remote, too difficult or too expensive to reach with old wired infrastructures used like fiber optic, cable- modem for last mile broadband access which requires new technologies and a different approach. The wireless solution is seriously considered by the NUR as a way forward in its ICT Infrastructure Development Plan of the year 2006. The plan has included the building of 5 pilot wireless local loops points at the NUR main building as a first stage. The results of the pilot project should provide inputs for the step consisting of providing ISP services to the South Province. The wireless solution should help for providing connectivity to remote sites, serving to collectivity by providing collectivity to remote villages and ISP services to the South Province for private and public institutions, schools, local business and home. The wireless has a role of Reliability, Inexpensive, More stable infrastructure and very good performances.

2 . STATEMENT OF THE PROBREM National University of Rwanda is a University which has more than ten thousands students and a big number of employees and all of them need network connection to achieve their daily work . There is an ever-increasing demand on mobile wireless operators to provide voice and high-speed data services in NUR and at the same time these operators are needed to support more users per base station to reduce overall network costs and make the services affordable to subscribers. As a result, wireless systems that enable higher data rates and higher capacities are a pressing need. The wireless is needed to help for saving money which would be used when using wired internet deployment or other Internet connections.

Beam forming is a general signal processing technique used to control the directionality of the reception or transmission of a signal on a transducer array. Using beam forming you can direct the majority of signal energy you transmit from a group of transducers like audio speakers or radio antenna in a chosen angular direction. Beam forming takes advantage of interference to change the directionality of the array and improve communication quality. When transmitting, a beam former controls the phase and relative amplitude of the signal at each transmitter, in order to create a pattern of constructive and destructive interference in the wave front. When receiving, information from different sensors is combined in such a way that the expected pattern of radiation is preferentially observed. With this technology, each users signal is transmitted and received by the base station only in the direction of that particular user. For this reason NUR, the intellectual community which always has a number of need to use beam

many obligations which need network connectivity to be achieved

forming technology in order to get a good access on the wireless network connectivity. 3. CHOICE AND INTEREST OF THE PROJECT The choice of this topic was driven by increasing need of mobility for computer users in NUR .As we described, BEAM FORMING has been developed to solve the problem which was not solved with the existing techniques such as DSL, WLAN, cable modem, fiber optic and also WiMAX technology it is for this reason NUR introduced this technology to provide internet service to its remote branches. This will help for saving money which would be used when using wired internet deployment or other Internet connections.

4. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT Our objectives of studying the NUR wireless network are: --Identifying the NUR wireless networks. --Identifying the various nodes for each networks - Measuring the signal strength of each node

- -Studying its coverage area - Presenting the actual network quality and propose suitable measures to be taken to improve the network performance and utilization and to make it more stable and reliable if necessary

5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY In this project, different techniques used to reach our objective are: -A performance monitoring and analysis was done on antenna in NUR water tank specifically on the network availability and on link quality. - Documentary technique which consists of consulting different books and other documents related to NUR wireless network using beam forming technique -The internet was also been used in the same purpose.

6. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT This project has focused on the description of currently NUR wireless network ; its

performance and some measurements of strength signal of its nodes and plot the results .

7. HYPOTHESIS 1. The NUR wireless network can be improved 2. The implementation of beam forming technology in NUR allows users to have internet connectivity and access personal files from any foreign Agent

8. ORGANISATION OF THE STUDY This study comprises four chapters: -The first chapter is the general introduction which gives a background note of the subject, the statement of the problem, the choice and interest of the study, the objective of the study , the research methodology, the scope of the study and the hypotheses . -The second chapter is the literature review Here we give the beam forming technology description which includes the definition and a short description of wireless communication in general forming -The third chapter is the NUR wireless network description Here we give identification on the NUR wireless network, identifying the various nodes for each network, Measuring the fields strength of each node , Studying its coverage area and evaluate the performance. -The fourth chapter is the general conclusion of the work and related recommendations. and the possible theory on beam

9. CONCLUSION This is an interest subject which help to present the actual NUR wireless network which is used in many services and look for its performance 10.
