nottdance08 in London

Siobhan Davies Studios thrives on presenting a rich programme of events and

this autumn we are proud partners of Dance4 and welcome nottdance to
London. The UK’s only annual festival of experimental dance and performance
is primarily based in Nottingham and this year breaks its geographic confines
and presents work at Siobhan Davies Studios in Elephant & Castle, South
London.

Thomas Lehmen from Germany will première a new work on Friday 24 October.
Heromatik was commissioned by Dance4 and challenges the conventional way
of creating and presenting a piece of work. Instead of focusing on showing a
finished piece, for each performance Lehmen creates a new set of possibilities,
developing the work under the very eyes of the audience. This is a very
personal take on artistic creation, a call to question what it means to be an
artist today.

In addition to this performance we have three further events: the nottdance

dialogue brings together three European artists, Lucy Cash from the UK, Eduard
Gabia from Romania and Tabea Martin from Holland, who will share their work
and reflect on their practice on Saturday 18 October. On Tuesday 21 October as
part of Independent Dance’s series of talks Crossing Borders which encourages
critical debate, Thomas Lehmen and Rose Fenton will talk about the nurturing of
emerging performance makers. And on Sunday 26 October, Thomas Lehmen
will also hold a workshop for professional dancers.

A new venture for both Siobhan Davies Dance and Dance4, it is hoped that
future collaborations will take place.

‘As an artist I recognise how well Dance4 finds distinct structures to help
encourage and promote individual artists. The specific approach provides
knowledgeable support in which risk can be tested.’ Siobhan Davies

Siobhan Davies Dance

Siobhan Davies Dance is one of the country’s most outstanding and innovative dance
companies and choreographer Siobhan Davies advocates for the wider recognition of
dance as a significant and extraordinary art form. The Company’s RIBA award- winning
building, Siobhan Davies Studios in Southwark South London, provides a local, national
and international resource for learning about movement and dance, and a meeting
ground to discuss new ideas. Together, the company and building support the creative
development of professional dancers, choreographers and artists from other disciplines
and also run a number of creative projects with Primary School’s within the borough.
As an artist, Siobhan Davies’ influence extends beyond dance and her work both
informs and inspires other artists.

nottdance
nottdance has been established since 1991 and is recognised across Europe and the
rest of the world as the only festival of its kind in the UK, offering artists and
choreographers a unique platform in which to present experimental dance and
performance work.

The festival is produced by national dance agency Dance4, a Nottingham based

organisation responsible for the development of artists and art form across the East
Midlands region.

The festival is one small part of an overall annual programme of learning, education,
community, touring, festival and performance work. Operating both strategically and in
delivery, Dance4 strives to support genuinely innovative work.

nottdance08 is supported by Arts Council England, Nottinghamshire County Council,

Nottingham City Council and The Foyle Foundation.
