Prerequisites Textbook

Math 221 and 222 or equivalent.

M.D. Weir, J. Hass, F.R. Giordano, Thomas Calculus including Second-order Dierential Equations, 11th Edition, Addison Wesley, 2006.

Course Topics

1. Review of vector-valued functions (13.1, 13.3, 13.4) 2. Partial derivatives (14.114.8, 14.10) 3. Multiple integrals (15.115.6) 4. Integration of vector elds (16.116.8) 5% Class participation 20% Homework 20% Exam 1 20% Exam 2 35% Final Exam There will be weekly HW assignments posted on the course website. It is your responsibility to check the course website for the latest assignment. Homework is mandatory and ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY if your goal is to do well in Math 234. HW will be assigned on a Friday and it will be due 7:45am on Friday. 7:45am on Friday is an unmovable deadline. Once class starts on Friday, no homework will be accepted. The TA will grade a random selection of problems from each HW. There will be a total of 14 homework assignments, your 2 lowest scores will be dropped. 1

Exam policy

There will be 2 midterm exams, each will take up an entire lecture. There will be a 2-hour long nal exam on Wednesday, Dec. 22nd . You will not be allowed to use calculators, your notes, or your textbook. Sharing or copying of answers on the quizzes or exams is considered cheating, and it will be dealt with harshly. Students caught cheating will be given a grade of F in the course and will be subject to disciplinary action by the University. There will be no make-up exams.

Math library How to do well in this course

The Math Library is located in B224 Van Vleck. This is a nice quiet place to study and has additional sources you may wish to consult if you are not satised with the textbook.

It is a students responsibility to come to class prepared to learn about the material. This means keeping up with the lecture (before, during, & after class time) by doing all of the following: 1. During lecture: taking notes (students who are talking, reading newspapers or magazines, or playing with cellphones, laptops, iPods, etc... will be asked to leave the classroom) 2. During lecture: asking questions if something the instructor says or writes is unclear 3. Outside of lecture: working out homework problems as well as additional problems 4. Outside of lecture: reading the textbook 5. Outside of lecture: coming to oce hours if necessary (TA and/or instructor)
