YOUTH ANIMATION

WHY FOCUS ON YOUTH

LAY PEOPLE, 12: Young people exert a very important influence in modern society.
The circumstances of their life, their habits of thought, their relations with their
families, have been completely transformed ....The growth of their social importance
demands from them a corresponding apostolic activity; and indeed their natural
character inclines them in this direction.
• They are more than half of the population
• The most generous time and so targeted by all.
• Best agents of change. Jesus Himself was a youth
• Possess a spontaneous zeal for the values like love unity, peace and justice.

ROLE OF ANIMATORS
Lay People 12: Adults should be anxious to enter into friendly dialogue with the
young, where, despite the difference in age, they could get to know one another and
share with one another their own personal riches. It is by example first of all and, on
occasion, by sound advise and practical help that adults should persuade the young to
undertake the apostolate. The young, on their side, will treat their elders with respect
and confidence; and though by nature inclined to favour what is new, they will have
due esteem for praiseworthy traditions.

7 STEPS IN YOUTH GUIDANCE

1. LOVE YOUTH: Know them, pray for them; attract and challenge.
2. BE NEAR THEM: Be positive, help them to have a fresh out look, use their
language and relevant dynamics.
3. INTRODUCE JESUS: Be their models to walk with Jesus; bring them to an
experiential knowledge of Jesus.
4. HELP THEM IN SELF DISCOVERY: They are individuals in need of growth,
unique persons. Give confidence, encourage initiative.
5. HELP THEM TO BE PART OF A NEW MOVE: Give them new friends, a new
culture, a movement to which they belong. Introduce them to cells, net working.
6. GIVE THEM A MISSION: Motivate them to reach out, evangelize, build a new
culture and world order
7. SUPPORT THEIR QUEST FOR A NEW SPIRITUALITY: Help them discover a
relevant expression of their faith drawing from the riches of the Church.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES
for
Youth Programs
ABC of MC'ing

Aloud - Does my voice reach to the end of the auditorium? Is my speech loud
and clear, but at the same time not too loud and irritating?

Brief - Do I clearly know what I am going to tell them? If needed will I be

able to say it in one sentence, in one minute or in three minutes?

Convincing - Do I have the clarity and conviction about my message? Have I

managed to get their full attention and co-operation? Have I thought
about their reservations?

A Program Co-ordinator
Interiories the vision of the project, discovering it in the context of
Jesus' plan for the Kingdom

Thinks about the before, during and after of the program, discerning
God's plan for the whole and the parts of the program

Plans the details of each session, considering in detail the who, what,
when and how. Intercede for each ingredient, so that the
Lord's guidance will be there.

Shares resposibilities effectively, with a team that shares in the

vision, thinking and planning, knowing that we are building up
missionaries for the Lord and His Church.

Delegates / assigns duties to different people, choosing them with

discretion, allocate roles with clarity of definition, reviewing and
assuring Implementation of the plans, making the whole exercise a
training in true Christian leadership.

Makes sure that the program has achieved its Goal, especially
through the communication of vision, mission and formulation
of future plans for the participants as a whole. The program
should be one step forward in forming volunteers to be the
Christian Presence in a troubled world.

WHILE HANDLING GROUPS
Be joyful! Don't preach. Don't try to teach. They have come to have a nice
time. Even if at your expense let them laugh. Be humorous.
Christianity is full of life. Be a witness.

Be sure of yourself. Have a clear plan and prepare well; but be ready to
change and adapt if the situation demands. Have your eyes, ears and
heart open to the group and for the Lord.

Avoid Clichés Don't use meaningless words and phrases. Use expressions
relevant to the group.

Use your creativity Familiarity generates monotony; boredom results in

resistance. Good News of Jesus can be so interesting and meaningful.

Be resigned to the Lord's will. In the Lord a failure is not a defeat and a
success, not a great thing. What we are doing is only one step forward
in God's plan for us and the Church.

ATTITUDES FOR AN ANIMATOR

1. These are the days of lay initiative. Learn the style of youth in focus and yourself
in the background.
2. Listen to the young person and her/his complex life situation. Love them and
intercede.
3. Give affirmation and feedback. Criticism and harsh corrections are
counterproductive.
4. Accept youth, even if they are leaders, with their limitations. Don’t over estimate.
5. Update your vision. As projects take shape, be present to reflect and grow with
them.
6. Their needs and growth are of utmost importance, not my vested interests and pet
projects.
7. In every youth group/project there is something unique that you can do. Do just
that.
8. Networking and small groups are the need of the hour. Learn to work with other
very different animators and their styles.
9. Have a long-term perspective, help them develop enduring systems of Christian
culture.
10. Be a person of integrity and strive towards holiness. Youth are in need of models.

With a joyous eagerness to see the advent of “ the Kingdom”, Jesus youth approach
the degeneration of the world around as a spiritual question requiring a holistic
solution.

light of the Gospel. With the new found friendship with Jesus and an empowering
experience of the Holy Spirit the person embarks on a journey of creative living,
building structures of love and sharing together with one’s friends.
Jesus Youth is a youth initiative rooted in Charismatic spirituality. It is quite an

all levels are encouraged to do something good with Lord. Christianising the different
life situations of young people is the prime task they are encouraged to take up, as
they are the best influence on modern culture and in turn most affected by it. This has
resulted in the various ministries or organised evangalisation groups and styles under
the wide umbrella of Jesus youth. Some of them are...

Out-reaches in slums, hospitals and colonies
Intercession Net works
Music, Audio-Visual and Art ministries

SELF ESTEEM
Christifideles Laici, 37.
To discover and make others rediscover the inviolable dignity of every human person
makes up an essential task, in a certain sense, the central and unifying task of the
service which the Church, and the lay faithful in her, are called to render to the human
family.
Maslov - 3 MAJOR ANTECEDENTS OF HIGH SELF-ESTEEM:
Respect and approval from other people;
Actual capacity, achievement, and success; and
Acceptance of and acting upon our inner nature.

Carl Rogers and his students have developed a scheme of the fully functioning
person, generally referred to as “Self theory”. Rogers summarises this theory in the
outline below:
A. The individual has an inherent tendency towards actualising his organism.
B. The individual has the capacity and tendency to symbolise experiences
accurately in awareness.
• A corollary statement is that he has the capacity and tendency to keep his
self-concept congruent with his experience.
C. The individual has a need for positive regard.
D. The individual has a need for positive self-regard.
E. Tendencies A and B are most fully realised when needs C and D are met. More
specifically, tendencies A & B tend to be most fully realised when
1. The individual experiences unconditional positive regard from significant others.
2. The persuasiveness of the unconditional positive regard is made evident through
relationships marked by a complete and communicated empathetic understanding
of the
individual’s frame of reference.
F. If the conditions under E are met to a maximum degree, the individual who
experiences these conditions will be a fully functioning person.

Self-esteem
A person lives essentially in his own personal and subjective world. The picture he
has of himself is a more important determinant of psychological adjustment and
effective behaviour than childhood (Psychoanalysis) or environmental (Behaviourism)
stimuli... A person sees the world through the filter of his self, and therefore his view
of self will colour and influence what he does and does not see, and how he sees that
which he does.

Jesus Youth Animation Service

INTERNET: www.jesusyouth.org
ANTECEDENTS OF SELF ESTEEM
Coopersmith found 4 conditions most often leading to high self esteem in children.
1. Full acceptance of the child by his parents (Rogers’ unconditional positive
regard)
2. Clearly defined and enforced limits - a basis for the child to evaluate his
performance in terms of expectations & taboos.
3. Respect for the child as a person and willingness to take his wishes and needs
into serious consideration. Parents with children having high self-esteem are
willing to negotiate family rules within carefully drawn limits... Such parents
show positive regard through availability for discussion taking an interest in the
child’s friends and his social and academic life generally.
4. A high level of self-esteem in parents. It seems obvious that parents with high
self-esteem can fulfill the other three requirements.

HURDLES TO SELF ESTEEM

Some of the factors which bring about a feeling of being incompetent and unlovable
are:
- Overprotective parents who do so much for the child that he gets a message of being
incapable of doing anything for himself;
- excessive criticism which creates a feeling of “I can’t do anything right”;
- exaggerated praise which creates standards impossible to reach and subsequent
feelings of worthlessness;
- too many “don'ts” which make a child feel that everything he does is sinful and evil;
and
- lack of fundamental respect for the child as a person which gives him the feeling of
being unimportant and worthless.

RAISING SELF-ESTEEM
• Learning to accept oneself is a key building block in the structure of self-esteem.
One realistically assesses abilities and capitalises on strengths while recognising
weaknesses.
• Setting goals, making new contacts and risking new behaviour are ways of
utilising one’s potential.
• Since interpersonal relationships are among the most significant areas of
personal effectiveness, the atmosphere of trust and intimacy can provide an
ideal atmosphere for developing new interpersonal skills.
Stress should be places on the idea that one’s self-concept is learned and, therefore,
can be changed.

GROW TOWARDS BEING FULLY HUMAN AND
FULLY ALIVE
1. Start an awareness journey
• God made each of us beautiful & adequate for our work in life. ‘God does not
create junk.’
• I can do nothing without Jesus - grow with Him
• Be like a child - Open, Desire to grow

2 By examining my distortions of reality

e.g.:
• I don't deserve to be happy when so many suffer
• loving myself is egoistic
• whatever I do must be perfect
• When someone comes to me with a problem I must solve it

3 By being gentle with myself

• Do I accept myself, my mistakes? Be delighted to be me Zeph. 3:16,17
• Am I aware of my feelings and accept them?
• We are never inadequate at being ourselves, but only trying to be someone else
• I must be patient with myself. God is at work.
4 Dismantle my negativity machine

• Inferiority Guilt Resentment Fear

5 By being gentle with others

• People act in ugly ways because they feel ugly about themselves. Cease to be
threatened by them. Accept them. They are in the image of God. Relate with
reverence .
• Help others perceive their real beauty, worth
• Affirming the people God brings into our lives > Use little ways to say ‘I
care’
• listen - praise - believing them best in them >noticing them as persons, not to
conform

Be loyal in keeping their good name and not my rights . . . forgive!

Conclusion
Do we put people off ‘private, do not trespass’ -be ready to take risks by
sharing - Start a movement of joy and creativity - This is the Good News of
Jesus. With Him begin this wonderful journey. ‘WE are an Easter people and
hallelujah is our song’.

EVANGELII NUNTIANDI of H. H. Pope Paul VI

What is Evangelization
18. ...The Church evangelizes when she seeks to convert, solely through the
divine power of the Message she proclaims, both the personal and collective
consciences of people, the activities in which they engage, and the lives and
concrete milieu which are theirs.

20. ...what matters is to evangelize man's culture and cultures always taking
the person as one's starting point and always coming back to the
relationships of people among themselves and
with God
The split between the Gospel and culture is without a doubt the drama
of our time, just as it was of other times.

21. Above all the Gospel must be proclaimed by witness. ....witness which
involves presence, sharing, solidarity, and which is an essential element, and
generally the first one, in evangelization.
All Christians are called to this witness, and in this way they can be
real evangelizers

22. Nevertheless this always remains insufficient, because even the finest
witness will prove ineffective in the long run if it is not explained,... There is no
true evangelization if the name, the teaching, the life, the promises, the
Kingdom and the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God are not
proclaimed. ... At every new phase of human history, the Church, constantly
gripped by the desire to evangelize, has but one preoccupation: whom to
send to proclaim the mystery of Jesus? In what way is this mystery to be
proclaimed? How can one ensure that it will resound and reach all those who
hear it?...

23. In fact the proclamation only reaches full development when it is listened
to, accepted and assimilated, and when it arouses a genuine adherence in
the one who has thus received it..... Such an adherence, which cannot remain
abstract and unincarnated, reveals itself concretely by a visible entry into a
community of believers. Thus those whose life has been transformed enter a
community which is itself a sign of transformation, a sign of newness of life,..
In the dynamism of evangelization, a person who accepts the Church as the
Word which saves normally translates it into the following acts: adherence to
the Church, and acceptance of the Sacraments, which manifest and support
this adherence through the grace which they confer.

Jesus Youth Animation Service

INTERNET: www.jesusyouth.org
24. Finally: the person who has been evangelized goes on to evangelize
others. Here lies the test of truth, the touchstone of evangelization....

Evangelization, as we have said, is a complex process made up of varied

elements: the renewal of humanity, witness, explicit proclamation, inner
adherence, entry into the community, acceptance of signs, apostolic initiative.

NEW EVANGELIZATION

The Call "Look to the future with commitment to a New Evangelization, one
that is new in its fervour, new in its methods and new in its expression."
(Haiti, 1983)

"The Church can bear effective witness only where she is present as
humble servant of all in need. ... With eyes fixed on the beginning of a new
Christian millennium, the Church is called to renew her efforts to proclaim the
Good News of Salvation."
(Ad Limina Visit of Bishops of India, April 6 1989)

"The whole Church is missionary and the work of Evangelization is the

fundamental duty of the People of God." (Ad Gentes, 35)

REDEMPTORIS MISSIO

2... The commitment of the laity to the work of evangelization is changing

ecclesial life..
Difficulties both internal and external have weakened the Church's
missionary thrust towards non-Christians, a fact which must arouse concern
among all who believe in Church. For in the Church's history, missionary drive
has always been a sign of vitality, just as its lessening is a sign of a crisis of
faith. what moves me even more strongly to proclaim the urgency of
missionary evangelization is the fact that it is the primary service which the
Church can render to every individual and to all humanity in the modern
world,..

3....No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme
duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples.

MISSIONARY SPIRITUALITY

87. Missionary activity demands a specific spirituality, which applies in

particular to all those whom God has called to be missionaries.
- Being led by the Spirit: this spirituality is expressed first of all by a life of
complete docility to the Spirit...
- Living the mystery of Christ, "The One who was Sent":
88...intimate communion with Christ... The missionary is required to
"renounce himself and everything that up to this point he considered as his
own, and to make himself everything to
everyone"
- Loving the Church and Humanity as Jesus did: 89....marked by apostolic
charity... feel Christ's burning love for souls, and love the Church as Christ
did.
- The true missionary is the saint: 90.... call to holiness...let us remember the
missionary enthusiasm of the first Christian communities.
