TYPE OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL*: Descriptive model SUPERVISOR : 1.TITLE:

Dr. Huan Nguyen

Evaluation of Adaptive Modulation and Coding technique in WiMAX MIMO OFDM systems.
2.KEY WORDS**: WiMAX, MIMO, OFDM, AMC, Space time block codes, Spatial Multiplexing. 3.PROBLEM DEFINITION: AMC has become a standard approach in recently developed wireless standards, including WiMAX. The idea behind AMC is to dynamically adapt the modulation and coding scheme to the channel conditions so as to achieve the highest spectral efficiency at all times. Adaptive modulation changes the coding scheme depending on channel state information choosing it in such a way that it squeezes the most out of what the channel an transmit. 4.AIMS:

The aim of this project is to evaluate Adaptive Modulation and Coding technique in WiMAX systems.
5.OBJECTIVES: 1.

To evaluate the performance of WiMAX systems based on the bit error rate and through put results when we use the adaptive modulation and coding.

2. To analyse MIMO mode with different conditions of QPSK, 16 QAM, 64 QAM and with convolution codes of , 2/3 and code rates.

3. To find out the advantages of MIMO antenna systems in WiMAX with adaptive

modulation and coding systems.

6.EVIDENCE OF REQUIREMENTS: Mat lab programming tool. Need to have a good knowledge of QPSK, QAM and some modulation schemes.

7.CONTEXT DESCRIPTION***: WiMAX technology is based on the IEEE 802.16 specification of which IEEE 802.16-2004 and 802.16e amendment are Physical (PHY) layer specifications. IEEE 802.16-2004 currently supports several multiple-antenna options including Space-Time Codes (STC), Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna systems and Adaptive Antenna Systems (AAS). The most recent WiMAX standard (802.16e) supports broadband applications to mobile terminals and laptops. Using Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) we analyse the performance of WiMAX system as a whole. 8.RESEARCH METHOD: Adaptive Modulation and Coding: WiMAX systems use adaptive modulation and coding in order to take advantage of fluctuations in the channel. The basic idea is quite simple: Transmit as high a data rate as possible when the channel is Good, and transmit at a lower rate when the channel is poor, in order to avoid excessive dropped packets. Lower data rates are achieved by using a small constellation, such as QPSK, and low-rate error-correcting codes, such as rate convolutional or turbo codes. The higher data rates are achieved with large Constellations, such as 64 QAM, and less robust error correcting codes. The research method is like a research work. 9.BRIEF PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Adaptive Modulation and coding technique is the main heart of this project. AMC is a term used in wireless communications to denote the matching of the modulation, coding and other signal and protocol parameters to the conditions on the channel. The AMC selects a channel according the SNR levels. For example, EDGE uses a rate adaptation algorithm that adapts the modulation and coding scheme according to the quality of the radio channel, and thus the bit rate and robustness of data transmission. The process of adaptive modulation and coding is a dynamic one and signal and protocol parameters change as the radio link conditions change.
