Question1willcontainaseriesofimagesderivedfromthelectureslidesandtutorial readings.Youwillberequiredtoansweratotalof20questions. Youdonotneedtomemoriseeverybuildingshownthroughoutthesemester.Wewill provideyouwithashortlistofbuildingsinweek12tohelpyoufocusyourrevision. Thetypesofquestionswillvaryandtheremaybemorethanonequestionaccompanying eachimage.Youwillbeexpectedtoidentifysuchthingsas: thenameofthebuilding

thenameofthearchitect/s(surnameissufficient) thestyleofthebuilding thebuildingtype thelocationofthebuilding(thenameofthecountryisnotsufficient,youmustname thecity,townordistrict,e.g.MortuarytempleofQueenHatshepsut,DeirelBhari) thedateofthebuilding,forwhichthedecadeissufficient.Takethedecadefromthe startdateofthebuildingifalongerconstructionperiodislisted.Forexample,the MortuarytempleofQueenHatshepsutisdatedc.14731458BC,soyoumay approximatetheanswertoc.1470BC.

InQuestion2youwillbeaskedtocompleteaseriesof10shortanswerquestionsworth2 markseach.Thecontentforthesequestionswillbedrawnfromthelecturenotes(included intheSubjectGuide)andthetutorialreadings.Thesewillcoversuchinformationas: theauthor,titleorimportantaspectsofasignificantarchitecturaltext

thedefinitionofspecificarchitecturalvocabularyorterminology thenameofanarchitect,style,buildingtype,constructiontechniqueormaterial thename,dateandlocationofspecificbuildings(N.B.dateaccuratetowithinthe correctdecadeandwithanexactlocation,aspertheinstructionstoquestion1)

Inthisquestionyouwillwriteathematicessayrespondingtoone(1)questionfromalistof eight(8).Asthequestionisthematicitrequiresyoutodemonstrateyourskillsincritical thinking,analysisandinterpretation.Fiveofthethemeswillmatchthoseofthesubjectand willbe:Space,SettlementandtheCity;SpacesofReligion;SpacesofCommunityandPublic Life;Dwelling:PrivacyandRuleandNewSpatialConcepts&SitesofContinuity. Theotherthreethemeswill:encouragecomparisonsbetweenEastern&Westernapproaches toarchitecture,discusstherelevanceofhistorytocontemporaryarchitecturalpractice and/orreflectupontherepresentationalfunctionofarchitecture. Youmaydefineyourownspecificareaofdiscussionwithinthetheme.Itisexpectedthat youressaywillbearguedfromspecificexamples(buildings,architects,textsetc.)anddetails ratherthangeneralisations.
