Sharing Printers & Files

*If guarddog firewall program is installed, you must unblock port 631 or disable the firewall all
together if you are not sure how to specify ports or are too damn lazy to figure out how!
*Add any local printers (http://localhost:631/printers (edit the printer list through the web browser if
KControl is crashing)
*Kanotix Quick~Browser: start samba configuration, (Use WORKGROUP for your workgroup, unless
you already have one like MSHOME. Enter your correct username and password, and the root
password you chose during install. Share Homedrives, share your printers, using the “root” username
and password, (Not administrator). Choose not restrict printers for known users only!
*Back in KControl, (Control Center), go to “Internet & Network”, and then “Samba” and enter the
administrator mode. Under the “Security Level” Section, Change from User to Share. You can also go
to the “Shares” tab and add any folders you want to share, (Read or Write access, your choice).
*On the server end only, (Side with the printer connected to it,) edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf via
Konqueror in super~user~mode, (Shortcut in start menu). Now search for “location” without caps
sensitivity and
replace “Allow From 127.0.0.1” to “Allow From 192.168.1.0/24” (Correct capitalization VITAL!!!)
...can also change to “Allow From @LOCAL” but does not work for me.

Sound System

o type ?setup (hd0)? to setup Grub on HD1 using the previous root entry
dpkg-reconfigure kdm (set kdm as default x program)
Create new user

Password
To change your password in Linux, type:

passwd
The root user can change the password of any user by running passwd with the user name as argument:
passwd jonny
will change jonnys password. Running passwd without arguments as root changes the root password.
If you need to add several new users and give them password you can use a handy program like
Another Password Generator to generate a large set of "random" passwords.

KDE

From KDE you can change your password by going:

• K -> Settings -> Change Password
• K -> Settings -> Control Center -> System Administration -> User
