Immunocal® was developed by a team of scientists, who in 1978, began testing
dietary proteins such as casein, soy, wheat, corn, beef, fish, egg albumin and
algae. The research, conducted by Dr. Gustavo Bounous and his colleague Dr.
Patricia, at McGill University in Montreal, led to the discovery of a product which
promotes optimal functioning of the immune system by sustaining normal levels of

Glutathione is a multifunctional tripeptide, found in human cell tissue, which
destroys free radicals, is involved in the detoxification of foreign compounds such

Kongshavn, showed that, by using isolate of milk serum as the protein source in
the diet of experimental animals, immune function was enhanced. Subsequently
Bounous et al. were able to trace this immune enhancing property or "bioactivity"
of the protein mixture to its ability to provide a rich source of glutathione
precursors (cystine), which enable the immune system to develop an optimum
response without being hampered by the accumulation of oxiradicals.
Immunocal® was shown to differ from other whey proteins in its effect upon the
body's immune response. Immunocal® studies have shown it not only
increases intracellular levels of GSH or glutathione precursors following
ingestion, but also helps the body to build up the store of these substances

Mammalian cells have evolved numerous mechanisms to prevent or treat injurious
events that can result from normal oxidative by- products of cellular metabolism
(oxiradicals). The "glutathione antioxidant system" is foremost among these

Interestingly glutathione also acts to reconstitute vitamins C and E after they have
been oxidized, and therefore plays a determinant role in their function. Glutathione

glutathione is found in the liver which is the principal organ involved in the

Through the action of GSH transferase, glutathione actually binds with the

increasing amounts of ultraviolet radiation due to the thinning of the ozone layer.
Here again glutathione plays a key role in neutralizing the oxiradicals produced by
radiation such as the hydroxylradical which is the most reactive radical known to

Who wouldn't like to get their hands on a naturally occurring substance that acts

can help your body repair damage caused by stress, pollution, radiation, infection,
drugs, poor diet, aging, injury, trauma, and burns?..... The strong antioxidant
effect of glutathione helps keep cells running smoothly. Bounous and another
glutathione expert, Jeremy Appleton, ND, say it also helps the liver remove
chemicals that are foreign to the body, such as drugs and pollutants...... "If you
look in a hospital situation at people who have cancer, AIDS, or other very
serious disease, almost invariably they are depleted in glutathione," says
Appleton. "The reasons for this are not completely understood, but we do know
that glutathione is extremely important for maintaining intracellular health."
Glutathione is probably not well absorbed into the body when taken by mouth......A

1991 May 1;57(2):91-4. Review.] Epidemiological and experimental studies
suggest that dietary milk products may exert an inhibitory effect on the
development of several types of tumors......the antitumor activity of the dairy
products is in the protein fraction and more specifically in the whey protein
component of milk......Whey protein is particularly rich in substrates for GSH
synthesis. We suggest that whey protein may be exerting its effect on
carcinogenesis by enhancing GSH concentration.

Enchancing effect of patented whey protein isolate (Immunocal®) on

cytotoxicity of an anticancer drug. Tsai WY, Chang WH, Chen CH, Lu FJ. [Nutr
Cancer. 2000;38(2):200-8.] To determine the enhancing effect of a whey protein
isolate on the cytotoxicity of a potential anticancer drug, baicalein, the human
hepatoma cell line Hep G2 was assigned to grow in different media for four days,
and cell growth and apoptosis were investigated.....survival rate was
significantly lower in cells grown in baicalein + Immunocal® than in cells
grown in baicalein alone.....In conclusion, Immunocal® seemed to enhance the
cytotoxicity of baicalein by inducing more apoptosis........This is the first study to
demonstrate, in vitro, that Immunocal® may function as an adjuvant in
cancer treatments.

Whey protein concentrate (WPC) and glutathione modulation in cancer

Whey protein concentrate has been shown to represent an effective and safe
cysteine donor for GSH replenishment during GSH depletion in immune deficiency
states........the concentrates of whey proteins also exhibit anti-carcinogenesis and
anticancer activity........and may have anti-tumor effect on low volume of tumor via
stimulation of immunity through the GSH pathway......Case reports.....strongly
suggest an anti-tumor effect of a whey protein dietary supplement in some
urogenital cancers. This non toxic dietary intervention, which is not based on the
principles of current cancer chemotherapy, will hopefully attract the attention of
laboratory and clinical oncologists.

In vitro selective modulation of cellular glutathione by a humanized native

milk protein isolate in normal cells and rat mammary carcinoma model.

We report the in vitro selective inhibitory activity of a humanized whey protein
concentrate Immunocal® on growth of mammary carcinoma cells and Jurkat T
cells in comparison to normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells. We relate this
inhibitory activity to a selective depletion of intracellular glutathione
synthesis. The use of humanized whey protein concentrate as a food
supplementation may have direct implication in clinical trial with adjuvant
chemotherapy.

The use of a whey protein concentrate in the treatment of patients with

metastatic carcinoma: a phase I-II clinical study. Kennedy RS, Konok GP,

Glutathione (GSH) concentration is high in most tumour cells and this may be an
important factor in resistance to chemotherapy.........experiments have shown a
differential response of tumour versus normal cells to various cysteine delivery
systems.........at concentrations that induce GSH synthesis in normal human
cells, a specially prepared whey protein concentrate, Immunocal®, caused
GSH depletion and inhibition of proliferation in human breast cancer cells.
On the basis of this information five patients with metastatic carcinoma of the
breast, one of the pancreas and one of the liver were fed 30 grams of this whey
protein concentrate daily for six months.......The results indicate that whey
protein concentrate might deplete tumour cells of GSH and render them
more vulnerable to chemotherapy.

Dietary whey protein inhibits the development of dimethylhydrazine

Dairy proteins protect against dimethylhydrazine-induced intestinal

against the development of intestinal tumors than were the red meat or soybean
diets......Intracellular concentration of glutathione, an antioxidant and
anticarcinogenic tripeptide, measured in liver, was greatest in whey protein- and
casein-fed rats and lowest in soybean-fed animals.....Whey is a source of
precursors (cysteine-rich proteins) for glutathione synthesis and may be important
in providing protection to the host by stimulating glutathione
synthesis......Whatever the mechanism(s), dairy proteins, and whey proteins in
particular, offer considerable protection to the host against
dimethylhydrazine-induced tumors relative to the other protein sources

American smart bombs zero in on programmed targets in Afghanistan.
Bioterrorism protection at home may demand drugs that do just the
opposite - kill just about any germ target in sight. Some researchers are
trying to fashion such universal drugs. ..........Over the last several years - and
especially in recent weeks - worries about terrorism have motivated the search for
such drugs........While universal drug candidates vary, they tend to work in a
common way: by revving up the body's broad, innate defensive shield against
foreign germs or their toxins...........
Jeanette Roberts, a chemist at the University of Utah's College of Pharmacy
in Salt Lake City, took a different approach. She tested the power of the
amino acid cysteine, a component of the liver's toxin-fighting glutathione,
to help disarm a germ poison. Glutathione works by donating an electron to
stabilize overactive free radicals, molecules that proliferate dangerously under toxic
stress.
Cysteine is normally toxic, too, but Roberts chemically rolled it into a ring to mask
its presence until needed. She said the approach might work with everything from
botulism toxin to nerve gas. Glutathione is already sold as an antioxidant
dietary supplement.
Oral glutathione is poorly absorbed.

With the recent outbreak of bioterrorism, I have been flooded with concerns about
how glutathione might relate to the anthrax scare.
My initial statement would be to urge the general public to suppress their paranoia
about this potential infection. This is not an easy organism to produce or sustain in
a laboratory, nor is it easy to transmit. Acquiring the infection does not represent
"the kiss of death" as well.
In general terms, raising glutathione levels has clearly been shown to
enhance the immune response against any foreign antigen, including viruses,
bacteria and fungi. Many studies have shown the efficacy of Immunocal against
organisms as diverse as HIV, hepatitis, streptococcus and staphylococcus
infections. This immune modulation likely extends towards the majority of
infections we may face.
Looking at the anthrax organism, there are no studies involving Immunocal®
directly. Until recently, this has not been an area of too much concern. However
there have been published studies investigating the relationship of
glutathione in anthrax infections. Two studies are of particular interest.
A Harvard Medical School study found that much of the toxic effect exerted
by the anthrax organism was due to chemicals releasing high levels of free
radicals. This was one of the factors causing cellular damage and death.

3. A use of a substantially undenatured whey protein concentrate, which

concentrate comprises substantially all thermolabile whey proteins of the source
milk with glutamylcysteine groups and disulfide bonds, in an amount sufficient to
decrease the G/L ratio, for treating cancer in a patient in need thereof.

4. A use of a substantially undenatured whey protein concentrate, which

concentrate comprises at least about 2.4 grams cysteine per 100 grams protein, in
an amount sufficient to replenish depleted intracellular glutathione, enhance
immune response and exert anti-cancer effects, for treating cancer in a patient in
need there of.

9. The use of a substantially undenatured whey protein concentrate, which

concentrate comprises substantially all thermolabile whey proteins of the source
milk with glutamylcysteine groups and disulfide bonds, in an amount sufficient to
replenish depleted intracellular glutathione, enhance immune response and exert
anti-cancer effects, for treating cancer in patients having lesions of the colon of the
type induced by dimethylhydrazine and being in need of treatment.

"Dave Miller is an AIDS activist and advocate for emerging therapies for treating
HIV.......As an advocate and someone living with AIDS, Miller is always looking for
ways to improve patient health and extend longevity. He has experience in forming
coalitions.....to obtain FDA and Medicaid approval for pharmaceuticals and
nutraceuticals that have shown promise in helping AIDS patients but, for some
reason, have languished unapproved.
Miller has now set his sights on organizing major clinical trials for two such
substances: Ampligen .......... and Immunocal, a nutraceutical that boosts
glutathione levels in the body and, by some unknown mechanism, appears
not only to inhibit wasting syndrome but also to stop the life-threatening
diarrhea that AIDS patients so often develop.
............... "Because every person's response to every disease is individual, some
people are going to survive AIDS without taking any drugs," Miller
argues.......There are a lot of people who can survive HIV for many years

and half on HAART plus Immunocal.
...In addition to staving off starvation, Immunocal raises glutathione
levels......Glutathione, while not a vitamin, acts as a powerful antioxidant......"If
it's used with other substances that stabilize the patient's metabolism,
Immunocal can save patients' lives, literally, because it helps stop them
from developing wasting and the whole host of problems that accompany
wasting syndrome," Miller asserts, adding, "I really believe that if you
stabilize the patient metabolically, using Immunocal and other
supplements to help prevent the onset of wasting, and then defeat the
mutated viruses in sanctuary regions with Ampligen, people with AIDS can
remain healthy for a much, much longer time."

Whey, Immunity And AIDS

the largest and most travelled health site on the planet.
Finally, and possibly most importantly, was a lecture by Dr. Gustavo Bounous from
Immunotec Research Ltd., in Vaudreuil-Dorian, Canada, regarding the uses of whey
protein concentrate with the complex of diseases known as AIDS.
Bounous is probably the most prolific and best known researcher in the world today
regarding the use of whey protein concentrate for the prevention and treatment of
cancer, AIDS and immune suppression. Bounous outlined his long history of
research into the many benefits of whey protein concentrate for preventing
cancer, improving immunity, raising glutathione, and fighting AIDS.
Bounous explained that HIV needs low glutathione levels to replicate and that HIV
has an antagonistic relationship to glutathione...that is, low cellular glutathione
allows HIV to multiply and high glutathione dramatically slows viral
replication. He has found a substantial reduction in virus activity in cells
with an improved glutathione status after the ingestion of whey protein
concentrate.
Moreover, he cited a recent finding that the more glutathione found in the
lymphocytes (immune cells) of people with HIV, the longer they were likely
to survive. Bounous also has found that this inhibitory effect of glutathione on HIV
works on many non-retro viruses, which shows that the effect is not virus-specific.
This means that increased glutathione levels (from the ingestion of whey
protein concentrate) potentially inhibits a wide range of viruses.
One case in which Bournous used whey protein concentrate to treat AIDS involved
an entire infected family. Lab reports indicated how each family member reacted to
whey protein concentrate treatment. The wife experienced a drop in viral load from
19,000 to just 3,000 in a matter of months. Her CD4 helper T cells-the immune
cells most affected by the HIV virus-rose slightly. The son in the family had a
tenfold reduction in viral load, while the husband seemed to be the only semi-
nonresponder in the family, with a slight drop in viral load and little change in CD4
counts.
Bounous said he has many case reports such as these showing clinical
improvements in viral counts, CD4 numbers, and overall well-being among
people he has treated with whey protein concentrate. Bounous was clear to
point out that he does not see whey protein concentrate as an alternative
to traditional treatments, but as a very effective adjunct to traditional
therapies for a wide range of diseases.

HIV (IMMUNE DEFICIENCY) TREATMENT- Disease therapies protocol

When reviewing medical studies relating to AIDS and nutrition, it appears that HIV
infection is a controllable disease if the appropriate steps are taken to protect
against deficiencies of critical nutrients and hormones that the delicate immune
system requires for optimal function (Lancet, 1989).
The Critical Importance of Glutathione
The HIV virus severely depletes the cells of an amino acid called
glutathione. Numerous studies reveal that the lack of glutathione causes
lymphocytes to become weak in their immunological "efficiency," thereby
contributing to the immune cell impairment characteristic of AIDS (FASEB
J., 1997).
Glutathione is a critical "peptide" or piece of protein found throughout the body. It
is a mop made by the body to soak up excess free radicals. It is the major defense
of CD4 T-cells cells against oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has also been
implicated in HIV-related muscle wasting and weight loss, as well as dementia and
neuropathy. The depletion of cellular glutathione also helps explain the
decrease in protein synthesis that results in the catabolic (wasting) state
that affects so many AIDS patients.
Part of HIV disease is not just the virus, but the damage done to tissues by
an overactive inflammatory response. Glutathione plays an important role in
maintaining cellular integrity throughout the body, including the epithelial lining of
the intestines. The intestinal impairment caused by glutathione deficiency
often manifests as inflammatory bowel disease, a common problem in AIDS
patients that prevents effective absorption of vital nutrients into the body
(Gut, 1998).
Low glutathione may be especially important in HIV, as there is evidence
that the Tat protein produced by this virus can abnormally reduce
glutathione levels. High levels of cellular glutathione severely limit any
virus or bacteria's ability to enter cells and replicate. The infection is
subsequently flushed from the system by normal means, which reduces
viral load.
Free radicals have been linked to much of the immune system destruction caused
by HIV. The HIV-induced cellular depletion of glutathione is associated with
free radical injury to numerous immune-system components. A wide range
of antioxidants have been shown to protect immune function, and nutrients that
maintain cellular levels of glutathione are especially important in preventing or
slowing the progression of HIV infection. T-helper lymphocytes require
adequate levels of glutathione to function normally, and HIV induces
oxidative stress that depletes T-helper cells of glutathione (Res. Immunol.,
1992).
Macrophages are another component of the immune system which relies
on glutathione. The macrophages are very large immune cells that protect the
body by swallowing and destroying foreign particles and cancer cells. The
production of a substance called leukotriene C by macrophages is essential for
them to reach invading organisms. When glutathione levels are low, the
macrophages' production of leukotriene C is inhibited, resulting in
diminished macrophage function.
A study by Stanford University found that for persons with a CD4 count under 200,
an abnormally low level of glutathione - inside CD4 T-cells in the blood - was
remarkably predictive of poor survival. The researchers at Standford showed
that those who have lower levels of glutathione inside cells suffer faster
progression. Low glutathione levels in CD4 T-cells mean increased risk of
death.
It is now widely understood that AIDS is associated with a deficiency of
glutathione that leads to the generation of enormous levels of oxidative
stress that damage and kill otherwise-healthy cells throughout the body.
Substances That Boost Glutathione Levels
Glutathione is made up of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamic
acid. NAC, methionine, alpha lipoic acid, DAAIR's Custom Mix and whey proteins

HIV-induced free radical oxidation occurs in the presence of low levels of
glutathione (H. S. Biol. Chem., 1989). Free radicals impair and destroy immune
cells, and scientific studies consistently show glutathione deficiency to be a
critical factor in the pathogenesis of immune suppression (AIDS). This
suggests that supplementation with nutrients to boost cellular glutathione
is crucial to protect against a primary mechanism by which HIV destroys
immune function. The following glutathione-enhancing nutrients are
recommended in their order of importance:

NAC is well-tolerated by most people, however some may be sensitive to it as it is
a sulfur containing compound. It is recommended to consume vitamin C in a dose
of three times the amount of cysteine to mitigate cysteine's oxidation to cystine.
vitamin C is included in the appropriate dose in the list suggested above Please
remember if your liver is in a weakened state, it may not be able to be
convert NAC to glutathione. Taking NAC under these conditions may further
suppress lymphocyte functions. A solution may be to consume glutathione
supplements directly even though they are poorly absorbed, and also to detoxify
the liver under the guidance of a qualified health care practitioner. NAC can be
resumed after liver toxicity has been resolved.
S-Adenosyl-Methionine (SAMe)
Anyone taking SAMe should also take on a daily basis 800 mcg of folic acid, 500
mcg of vitamin B12, and at least 100 mg of vitamin B6 to protect against excess
homocysteine accumulation in the blood.
Glutathione
Controversy surrounds oral glutathione supplementation as some research has
shown that this form of ingestion has not been efficacious, while other research
contradicts this. Glutathione is strongly recommended for HIV patients who can
afford this relatively expensive supplement.
Cysteine and glutathione supplements are mainly broken down in the gut,
enter the bloodstream only with difficulty, and increase cell glutathione
only marginally. Even with intravenous administration, these drugs are of limited
benefit in significantly increasing tissue glutathione levels, and although they have
proven beneficial in acute medical emergencies, their substantial side-effect
profiles and toxicity severely limits their usefulness in the treatment of chronic
disease.
Pharmaceutical-grade preparations such as N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and
oxothiazolidine carboxylate (OTC) have successfully raised glutathione levels
and have recognized clinical indications in the treatment of chronic
bronchopulmonary disease and toxicology. However, these drugs have dose-
limiting toxic profiles, significant side effects, and a relatively short half-
life. N-Acetyl cysteine is toxic, only lasts for about 2 hours, and is useful mainly in
an emergency situation to increase liver glutathione in the event of acetominophen
overdose.
But Immunocal®'s cysteine=cysteine dipeptide called cystine enters the
blood with no digestion, and donates two cysteine molecules in the cells,
where they're used to create glutathione. Immunocal® has been clinically
proven to raise intracellular glutathione levels significantly, consistently,
and without side-effects.

including those with HIV wasting syndrome. Dr. Luc Montagnier, the co-

with HIV frequently have depleted levels of many important vitamins and

drugs - if they don’t eat, their bodies cannot absorb the drugs. By taking vitamin
and mineral supplements aggressively, they substantially increase their
chances for a longer life.

Whey protein comes from cow’s milk. It’s a combination of proteins that are
relatively easy to digest for people living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs).

What do people with HIV use this supplement for?

! To combat muscle wasting, weight loss and fatigue

Muscle tissue is made up primarily of proteins. Unfortunately, many PHAs
experience muscle loss or wasting. This leads to weakness, weight loss,
fatigue and thinning of muscular areas of the body. Muscle wasting in HIV is
still not well understood and is probably due to a combination of factors including
metabolic disturbances, reduced food intake and increased energy needs. One
possible solution to this problem is to increase protein intake. Whey protein
may be useful because it is an easily digestible source of protein.

One tiny study was conducted in three PHAs who had experienced wasting but
whose condition had stabilized in the two months preceding the trial. The subjects’
weight returned to healthier levels after three months of whey protein
supplementation. In another study combining exercise, anabolic steroids,
nutritional counselling and whey protein, a significant increase in body cell
mass (a measure of muscle tissue) was seen.

Unfortunately, however, it is difficult to assess the specific role each of the above
factors played in this improvement. Still, many anecdotal reports do tell of gains in
muscle mass in PHAs taking whey protein. According to the American buyers’
club DAAIR (Direct Access Alternative Information Resources), a number of
clients taking whey protein and glutamine have gained lean muscle mass
and experienced improvements in their symptoms of fatigue.

! To increase glutathione levels

Studies suggest that PHAs have lower levels of glutathione than HIV negative
people and higher levels of free radicals. Animal studies have demonstrated
that whey protein can increase glutathione levels in body tissues. The three
participants in the small study referred to above also experienced
glutathione increases in their immune cells.

PHAs using whey protein generally dissolve 20 to 40 grams of the powder a day in
juice, milk or water. It should not be dissolved in a heated liquid because heat may
destroy some of the proteins.

Cautions and concerns

Whey protein has few side effects although large doses may cause bloating and
flatulence. Although many nutrition experts support the idea of a high-protein diet
for PHAs, increasing your intake of protein may also increase stress on the liver and
kidneys. PHAs with abnormal liver enzyme levels should have them monitored
regularly.

DESCRIPTION
Immunocal® is a U.S. patented natural food protein concentrate which assists the
body in maintaining an optimal concentration of glutathione (GSH) by supplying
the precursors required for intracellular glutathione synthesis. These precursors are
derived from a specially prepared bovine whey protein isolate. Glutathione (L-
gamma-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine) is the major endogenous antioxidant produced
by the cell. Glutathione participates directly in the neutralization of free radicals,
reactive oxygen compounds, and maintains exogenous antioxidants such as
vitamins C and E in their reduced (active) forms. In addition, through direct
conjugation, glutathione plays a role in the detoxification of many xenobiotics
(foreign compounds) both organic and inorganic. Glutathione is an essential
component of the human immune response. Proposed mechanisms of immune
enhancement include:

1. optimizing macrophage functions,

2. offsetting oxidative damage associated with lymphocyte monoclonal

expansion and
3. stabilizing the mitochondrial membrane thereby, reducing apoptosis in
lymphocytes.

CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
The systemic availability of oral glutathione is negligible; the vast majority of it
must be manufactured intracellularly. Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide made up of
the three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamate. Glutamate and glycine are
readily available in most North American diets, but the availability of cysteine the
rate-limiting substrate for the synthesis of glutathione within the cell. It is the
sulfhydryl (thiol) group (SH) of cysteine that serves as proton-donor and is
responsible for the biochemical activity of glutathione. The free amino acid cysteine
does not represent an ideal delivery system to the cell. It is potentially toxic and is
spontaneously catabolized in the gastrointestinal tract and blood plasma.
Conversely, cysteine absorbed during digestion as cystine (two cysteine molecules
linked by a disulfide bond) in the gastrointestinal tract is more stable than the free
amino acid, cysteine. The disulfide bond is pepsin- and trypsin-resistant, but may
be split by heat, low pH, and mechanical stress. Cystine travels safely through the
GI tract and blood plasma and is promptly reduced to the two cysteine molecules
upon cell entry. Immunocal can thus be viewed as a cystine delivery vehicle.
Cystine is the preferred form of cysteine for the synthesis of glutathione in
macrophages and astrocytes. Lymphocytes and neurons prefer cysteine for
glutathione production. Optimizing glutathione levels in macrophages and
astrocytes with cystine allow these cells to provide cysteine to lymphocytes and
neurons directly upon demand.
This specially prepared whey protein isolate contains the thermolabile proteins
serum albumin, alpha lactalbumin and lactoferrin. These proteins contain high
levels of cystine residues that could be denatured by heat, low pH, or mechanical
stress (inherent in most extraction processes). In serum albumin there are 17
cystine residues and 6 glutamylcystine (Glu-Cys) dipeptides; in lactoferrin 17
cystine residues and 4 Glu-Cys dipeptides; and in alpha-lactalbumin 4 cystine
residues. In particular, the Glu-Cys dipeptides very readily enter the cell to be
synthesized into GSH. Of interest, the Glu-Cys dipeptide is an exclusive feature of
the only obligatory foods in the early life of mammals and oviparous species, those
being milk and egg white respectively. When subject to heat or shearing forces, the
fragile disulfide bonds within these peptides are broken and the bioavailability of
the glutathione precursors is greatly diminished.
As an antioxidant, glutathione is essential for allowing lymphocytes to express their
full potential, without being hampered by oxyradical accumulation during the
oxygen-requiring development of the immune response. In a similar fashion, GSH
delays the muscular fatigue induced by oxyradicals during the aerobic phase of
strenuous muscular contraction.
As a detoxification agent, glutathione has been demonstrated to be effective
against a number of xenobiotics, including chemical pollutants, various carcinogens
and ultraviolet radiation.
Glutathione is a tightly regulated intracellular constituent and is limited in its
production by negative feedback inhibition of its own synthesis through the enzyme
gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase, thus greatly minimizing any possibility of
overdosage.

INDICATIONS AND USAGE

Immunocal® is a natural food supplement and as such is limited from stating
medical claims per se. Statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. As such,
this product is not intended to diagnose, cure, prevent or treat any disease.
Glutathione augmentation is a strategy developed to address states of glutathione
deficiency, high oxidative stress, and xenobiotic overload in which glutathione
plays a part in the detoxification of the xenobiotic in question. Glutathione
deficiency states include, but are not limited to: AIDS and cancer cachexia,
chemical and infectious hepatitis, radiation poisoning, malnutritive states, arduous
physical stress, and has been associated with sub-optimal immune response. Many
clinical pathologies are associated with oxidative stress and are elaborated upon in
numerous medical references.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Immunocal® is contraindicated in individuals who develop or have known
hypersensitivity to specific milk proteins.

PRECAUTIONS
Each sachet of Immunocal® contains nine grams of protein. Patients on a protein-
restricted diet need to take this into account when calculating their daily protein
load. Although a bovine milk derivative, Immunocal® contains less than 1%
lactose and therefore is generally well tolerated by lactose-intolerant individuals.

WARNINGS
Patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy should discuss the use of this
product with their health professional.
Heating or adding Immunocal® to a hot liquid, or use of a high-speed blender to
reconstitute it will significantly decrease the effectiveness of the product.

ADVERSE REACTIONS
Gastrointestinal bloating and cramps if not sufficiently rehydrated. Transient
urticarial-like rash in rare individuals undergoing severe detoxification reaction.
Rash abates when product intake stopped or reduced.

OVERDOSAGE
Overdosing on Immunocal® has not been reported. Unless hypersensitive to the
constituents, no toxicity of milk proteins has been described.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Maintenance dose is one sachet (10 grams) per day. For mild to moderate health
challenges, higher doses are recommended. Clinical trials in patients with AIDS,
cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome have used 30-50 grams per day without ill
effect. Immunocal® is best administered on an empty stomach or with a light
meal. Concomitant intake of another high protein load may adversely affect
absorption.

RECONSTITUTION: Immunocal® is a dehydrated powdered protein isolate. It

must be appropriately rehydrated before use. If left standing too long after
rehydration, activity of the product may be reduced. Times vary depending on
temperature and pH of the liquid used. It is generally recommended to ingest the
product within 30 minutes of reconstitution. DO NOT heat or use a hot liquid to
rehydrate the product or use a high-speed blender for reconstitution. These
methods will decrease the activity of the product. Special low-speed blenders or
mixing cups can be made available through NuMedTec distribution networks.
Proper mixing is imperative. Consult instructions included in packaging.
