DRAFT
POOL M EETING: A S UMMARY Approximately 50 people attended the Bowling Club last Thursday night where Joe Lantz of Lantz Marshal presented findings on the future use proposal for Canowindra Pool. Assessment of the 33m pool found that the pool shell is sound, although the childrens pool has fractured in the middle joint, and there is only one water circulation system which is inadequate. The plant room and plant is in poor condition. A number of new features were recommended by Lantz: Pool wet deck filtration system to replace the existing scum gutter as it is more hygienically sound, reduces wave motion and is visually appealing, and it raises the water level to concourse height. Beach entry access for the kids pool provides a graded entry, replaces ramps and provides a safe entry for children. Aquatic play equipment in the kids pool provides activity and is relatively low cost. A two staged master plan has been prepared, based on the structural assessment of the 33m pool and considerations of the operational deficit and capital cost: Stage 1: Redevelop the existing 33m pool and establish broader complimentary facilities. Stage 2: Review the need and financial operations of a 50m pool complex in 15 years (minimum life cycle of redeveloped 33m pool). Stage 1: Incorporate the former managers residence land into the pool complex. Retain the existing shell of the 33m pool and convert the 33m pool into a 25m lap-pool with a 6m wide program pool. The amenities are to be upgraded and expanded to include: Male and female amenities; Disabled amenities (dual use as family rooms); Storage area; Plant room; Multi-purpose room that can be used as a club room, low impact activities (eg yoga...), etc; Installation of solar heating system on the roof of the re-developed amenities linked to the new plant room; extend the roofing of the amenities towards the main pool and act as a seated shade area; Demolish the existing plant room; Retain the existing entry building money collection, canteen and office; Establish a children leisure pool with play equipment, beach entry and water features; Purchase of an inflatable pool activity centre (that can be shared amongst all Cabonne Council pools); Remove internal fences and open the site up; Retain and enhance the existing shelters adjacent to the childrens pool and BBQ area. Estimated Capital Cost = $1,631,013 Estimated Operational Cost = $68,200 pa Note: Stage 2 has been prepared to act as a second stage of long-term works following the implementation of Stage 1. Lantz Marshall will now review feedback from this community and council meeting and present a final report. A 50 metre option was discussed however the consensus was to go with the 33m option with room for upgrade in the future. Rod Staples, Director of Engineering was introduced by Durko and was very supportive of the Lantz Marshall plan and community feedback. Now that the decision to retain the pool in its current position, Rod communicated the urgency of renovating the amenities block so that funds would be used in this quarter. Rod and staff visited the pool site Monday afternoon to look at starting work within the next week. As the Pool will be opening 10 October, portable facilities will be used for the interim until the amenities block is complete. Plans will be available from The Phoenix office for those who didnt get to the meeting, and any suggestions can be made to admin@lantzmarshall.com.au Further details will be forthcoming in future issues of The Phoenix.

GIVING AN H AND UP, NOT AN H AND OUT Construction of the Habitat for Humanity Australia (HFHA) housing in south Canowindra is due to start over the next couple of weeks. James Isaacs Building Services has a representative in Sydney as this issue goes to print, lining up last minutes supplies. Through Habitat For Humanity, low-income families in Canowindra can achieve the dream of building and owning their very own safe, secure home. One family in Canowindra has successfully applied to help build and own their home, and there are another two homes available for eligible families. Families wishing to apply must meet the following criteria: Currently living in housing related stress where the dwelling is inadequate or non existent; Unable to borrow to buy or build a home through traditional means; Have a current source of income to cover weekly payments for the house; Willing and able to contribute 500 hours of sweat equity in building their home with friends and family, including basic skills and financial training. Habitat houses are affordable for low-income families because the houses are sold to them at less than market value and no interest is charged on the mortgage. The length of a HFHA mortgage in Australia is 15 to 20 years, depending on the amount of the mortgage and the weekly repayments. Families interested in applying should contact HFHA by email jamesallardice@habitat.org.au

A NEW T AKE ON HISTORY There has been a great deal of excitement at the Age of Fishes Museum in the past week with the arrival of the long awaited Acoustiguide machines, just in time for the school holidays. These machines looking like a remote control with a screen have recorded information, pictures and videos in one handy device. This means that each fossil display now has a number and when this number is placed into the acoustiguide a recorded commentary is heard. The commentaries have been recorded by Dr Robyn Williams and Karina Kelly. Karina was the presenter of the Quantam program that first introduced the Devonian fish to the general public, and Robyn is the Museums Patron. Visitors can choose from the adult talk or the childrens version. The young people on the childrens version are very professional and visiting school children were amazed by this aspect. The arrival of the acoustiguide machines have been made available from a grant from the NSW State Government. Dawn Fardell when she was Independent member for Dubbo was instrumental in obtaining this grant and the Manager and volunteers are very grateful for this wonderful facility. It will now mean that visitors can explore the Museum at their own pace. The acoustiguides are compact and robust screen-based players, developed and designed specifically for on-site interpretation of museums and visitor venues. The guides provide visitors access to various digital resources videos, images and animation on top of the traditional audio in a platform catering exactly to the needs of visitors. The other benefit of these machines is that tour guides no longer have to acquire all the scientific information about the Devonian fish fossils, it is all there on the acoustiguide. The guides provide interpretive information about 17 points of interest both inside and outside the Museum. By offering cutting edge technology and information not previously available to customers the machines will talk the pressure off volunteers and staff in relation to tour guiding and will also ensure a consistent standard of information to visitors. While admission applies to the Museum exhibitions there is no charge for the acoustiguides. If you ever thought that you would like to volunteer in a really unique environment now is the time to contact the Museum. You will be working in a world class facility, meet fascinating people and greatly help the Museum. Details are available at the Museum during opening hours from 10am 4pm 7 days. If you are looking for something to do these school holidays, you dont even have to leave town! Come down to the Age of Fishes Museum and see what has been discovered in your own backyard...be careful though, you just might learn something.
