If you believe in guardian an-
gels, then you know that they
come to people in their moment of
greatest need in unexpected
forms. But whoever heard of a
guardian angel from Dallas,
Texas, of all places?
If he has a Dallas Cowboys
sticker on his car out there, Im
letting our officers arrest him,
Mayor Randy Brown joked last
week as he shook the hand of An-
thony Baynard. The Evesham
Township Council and two very
lucky employees from Jay
Roberts Jewelers honored Bay-
nard for his quick thinking in
July when he helped save two in-
jured employees after an elderly
driver crashed her car through
the front wall of the jewelry store.
In my five years as mayor, Ive
never seen a show of bravery like
Anthony showed that day,
Brown said.
A consultant with Club Metro,
Baynard has been living in Marl-
ton for the past few months while
he has helped develop the new fit-
ness club.
On the day of the accident,
Baynard said he was in the clubs
office speaking with Glenn
OHare, the clubs manager, and
the pair was discussing the im-
portance of neighbors in the com-
mercial complex, when a huge ex-
plosion-like noise came from out-
side.
It shook the whole building. I
ran outside and saw smoke com-
ing out of the jewelry shop, Bay-
nard said. I just ran over and
wanted to see if we could be of
help to anyone.
When he came to the store-
front, he was amazed to find a ve-
hicle had crashed completely
through the storefront window at
Jay Roberts Jewelers. He ap-
proached the vehicle and yelled to
the woman to see if she was al-
right, Baynard said, and the first
thing she asked was if she had
killed anyone in the store. Think-
ing quickly, Baynard unjammed
her foot from the brake and shut
the car off before going into the
store and seeing the havoc.
It had been a normal day for
longtime employees Olivia Pan-
talone and Joan Morein, until the
several-ton car exploded into the
jewelry store. Morein was thrown
like a ragdoll onto the ground and
was lodged under the car, while

The Evesham Township Coun-
cil is attempting to address an
issue that has been plaguing resi-
dents of the Inglis Gardens Com-
munity for the past decade. The
council will be submitting an ex-
tensive grant application for
roadway improvements along N.
Elmwood Road.
Almost 10 years ago, the town-
ship constructed Inglis Gardens
at 304 N. Elmwood Road as an af-
fordable development for wheel-
chair-accessible apartments for
people with physical disabilities.
However, the community did not
have a connecting sidewalk that
ran down N. Elmwood Road to
Evesboro-Medford Road, so resi-
dents, all of whom are physically
disabled, would have to either
cross the street without the aid of
a crosswalk or walk along the
shoulder of the road to the inter-
section.
The grant application will be
for about $350,000 in pedestrian
improvements along N. Elmwood
Road between Route 70 and Eves-
boro-Medford Road, Township
Manager Tom Czerniecki said.
Resident Kathleen Santomero
approached council and thanked
the group for approving the grant
application. On behalf of all the
members of the Inglis Gardens
community, Santomero said she
was grateful for this resolution.
This has been a plight of the
handicapped individuals that live
in a so-called independent facility
for the past 10 years, she said.
Recently, Santomero said she
had to save a blind resident of the
development when he had
stepped out into the street after
being forced from the sidewalk
when a sprinkler system came on
and confused him.
Im worried that someone is
going to be killed along this
road, she said.
Czerniecki encouraged the
members of council to include
the public comments in the offi-
cial grant application, because he
said it would go a long way into
encouraging the representatives
for the state Department of

Because the road is surround-

lowing dates and times:

n Kettle Run/Hopewell Road
Station will be open on Wednes-

taken on a fire truck and look our
all of our equipment. There will
be demonstrations at many of the
open houses, fire safety give-
aways and food.
A reminder to check
your smoke alarms
Evesham Fire-Rescue is en-
couraging residents to check the
age of your homes smoke alarms
and carbon monoxide alarms. In
2011, Evesham Fire-Rescue has
experienced a 48 percent increase
in false activations of smoke and
carbon monoxide alarms com-
pared to the same period of time
in 2010.
Lt. Carl Bittenbender of Eve-
sham Fire-Rescue reports false
alarms can be attributed to a com-
bination of low batteries,
dirty/dusty alarms and out-of-
date alarms. Carbon monoxide
alarms gained popularity about
eight to 10 years ago and laws re-
quiring them to be installed in
dwellings quickly followed. How-
ever, those detectors are now com-
ing of age and falsely activating.
Residents become concerned, and
rightly so, and activate 911 for the
fire department to respond.
Bittenbender elaborated,
manufacturers of smoke and
carbon monoxide alarms publish
guidelines for the replacement of
their particular alarms with most
manufacturers recommending re-
placement every five to 10 years.
Remember that for a few dollars
you can have a brand new smoke
and carbon monoxide alarm with
the most up-to-date technology to
protect your family. When Eve-
sham firefighters arrive at these
activations, they confirm that
there is no carbon monoxide or
fire in the home and then provide
education to our residents on
proper maintenance of these im-
portant devices.
If your battery-powered smoke
alarm or carbon monoxide alarm
begins to emit an intermittent
warning or chirping, or displays
a digital readout of LB, this in-
dicates a low battery condition
and residents do not need to acti-
vate 911 for these alarms. Resi-
dents can and should replace the
batteries on the detectors and see
if the condition remedies itself.
When in alarm mode, these de-
vices will sound loudly and con-
tinuously and it will be apparent
that the alarm is indicating a sus-
pected fire or carbon monoxide
incident. If this occurs, residents
should activate 911.
All smoke and carbon monox-
ide alarms in your home should
be tested once a month and their
batteries replaced twice a year
when you change your clocks.
Every family should develop a
fire escape plan and practice it at
least twice a year.
According to the United States
Fire Administration, about 2,700
people lose their lives in residen-
tial fires each year. Most fire vic-
tims die from inhalation of
smoke and toxic gases, not as a re-
sult of burns. Half of all deaths
and injuries occur in fires be-
tween 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. while vic-
tims are asleep.
Smoke and carbon monoxide
alarms provide an early warning,
giving residents a chance to es-
cape.
Evesham Fire-Rescue can pro-
vide smoke detectors to residents
free of charge by stopping at one
of our stations Main Street,
Kings Grant, Kettle Run or our
Fire Administration Office at the
Evesham Township building. Un-
fortunately, we do not supply car-
bon monoxide alarms.
Smoke detectors will also be
available free of charge at upcom-
ing Evesham Fire-Rescue open
houses on Main Street, Saturday

Pantalone was pinned between
the car and one of the showcases
in the store.
I dont remember much from
the day, but I remember opening
my eyes and seeing the crest of
his Club Metro shirt as he lifted
me up from the ground, Morein
said. Baynard had picked her up
from the ground and took her to a
safer location in the store. Morein
never even saw the face of her
rescuer until he was honored at
last weeks council meeting, she
said.
Pantalone said Baynard ran
into the scene like a superhero
and most likely saved her life that
day. He lifted the showcase off of
the injured employee and saw
that she had two very deep cuts
on her forearm, she said, and he
instructed her to keep her arm
above her head to limit the bleed-
ing after wrapping the wound. An
Evesham EMS employee said that
if he didnt tell her to keep her
arms above her head, she might
not have made it due to excessive
blood loss, her husband, Joe Pan-
talone said.
He came in like superman. He
took care of some other employ-
ees and then he lifted me out,
Olivia said, tears brimming in
her eyes as she told the story.
Jake Spigelman, co-owner of
the store with Jay Golde, said he
was in the back of the facility
when the car drove through the
window. When he came out to the
front room, he said he saw Joan
under a pile of rubble and she
wasnt moving and he initially
thought that she was a goner.
But thanks to a quick-thinking
consultant, both Olivia and Joan
got a chance to hug Baynard and
thank him for his bravery. For his
heroism, Baynard was presented
with a new watch from Jay
Roberts.
All I wanted to do was help.
Were neighbors; neighbors help
neighbors, Baynard said.

6 THE MARLTON SUN SEPTEMBER 28-OCTOBER 4, 2011
in our opinion
B
y now almost everyone has
heard the dire warning: If the
Postal Services finances arent
fixed by next summer, mail delivery
stops.
Now, ordinarily, folks would shrug
off such words as hyperbole. But, only
a few weeks ago, the nation teetered
on fiscal default, so, these days, we all
have to pay attention.
Will the Postal Service close?
Theres perhaps the most remote
chance that it will, but, probably not.
Especially since there are a number of
solutions already on the table.
First, end Saturday delivery. It
would inconvenience some, but it
wont be that big of a deal once every-
one gets used to it.
Second, downsize employees and
close facilities. Every company has to
examine its expenditures. If it makes
sense to lay off some employees and
close some post offices, do it.
Third, expand the non-postal servic-
es provided at post offices. They al-
ready handle passports, for example.
So long as any extras dont give a
government agency an unfair advan-
tage over the private sector, have at it.
But really big money can be found
when lawmakers look at a pre-funded
retiree health benefits commitment
and billions of dollars the service said
it overpaid into a retirement fund.
Our guess is that some combination
of the above, with maybe a few other
ideas tossed in, will keep the mail
flowing for now.
Going forward, though, the Postal
Service should have the flexibility to
adapt to new technology, changing
times and increased competition. Cou-
ple that with budgetary mandates that
include mandatory spending cuts if
goals arent hit, and you have the basis
of a plan that could keep the mail com-
ing for years to come.
The mail isnt here yet
And some say that, come next summer, it never will get here
The postal problems
Would you miss Saturday postal deliv-
ery? What are your thoughts on
restructuring the Postal Service?

Alligators, ladies, preachers and royalty
These women aint ladies;
theyre the SJ Roller Derby
Women they are, but ladies they aint.
The girls of the South Jersey Roller Derby
league dont wear bows, they dont play
with dolls, and they sure dont use inline
skates. Only roller skates can suffice when
delivering a vicious forearm shiver into
the jugular of an opposing jammer.
But you wont find any of these demoli-
tion beauties holding out for more money
or appearing on television spots for local
car commercials, or even playing in front
of crowds of thousands.
No, they do it because its fun, its fast
paced, and they get some pretty cool nick-
names.
The girls of South Jersey Roller Derby
have been rocking and rolling (mostly
rolling) since 2007, when current president
and founder Melissa Morera, aka Mos
Deathly, moved up from Virginia with her
sister and organized the league.
What started as a five-skater, all girl
team that practiced outdoors in a public
park has grown into a co-ed league consist-
ing of 70 skaters and a home skating rink
with a fully-formed banked racetrack. The
league has four in-house teams and two
traveling co-ed teams that travel along the
East Coast, skating against other roller
derby squads.
The South Jersey Roller Derby has its
own rink/stadium in West Deptford where
it hosts its matches. It also just purchased
its first banked track, The Green Ma-
chine, for $10,000 from the San Diego
Derby Dolls, Morera said. Its a historic
track, she said, which has seen thousands
of matches played on its surface.

Alligators are found during

more than $2,600 in cash, and two alliga-

The plan is to return them to their natu-

Winslow preacher charged

A preacher from Winslow has been ac-

girl.
Archie Bolger, 62, of Drexel Gate Drive

sexual contact with a girl under 18, accord-
ing to the Camden County Prosecutors Of-

The prosecutor said Bolger has
preached at St. Matthews Baptist Church

scribes its doctrine as conservative, evan-
gelical Christianity, has no mention of Bol-
ger on its website.
The prosecutors office says Bolgers al-

Bolger was charged with 2nd-degree sex-

sexual contact. He was released after post-

This I Believe, and to be educat-
ed and moved by the stories and
experiences he shares.
Based on the National Public
Radio series of the same name,
This I Believe features 80 essay-
ists from the famous to the un-
known completing the thought
that begins with the books title.
Each piece compels readers to
rethink not only how they have
arrived at their own personal be-
liefs but also the extent to which
they share them with others.
Featuring contributors such as
Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robin-
son, Bill Gates, and Albert Ein-
stein, the collection also contains
essays by a part-time hospital
clerk, a woman who sells Yellow
Pages advertising, and a man who
serves on a state parole board.
The result is a stirring and
provocative trip inside the minds
and hearts of people whose be-
liefs and the varied ways they ex-
press them reveal the American
spirit at its best.
A key goal of the One Book,
One School Program is to
strengthen the school community
through a learning experience
common to all.
What better way to do that than
for all of us to come together for
this special presentation, free and
open to all.
For more information on the
This I Believe project and to listen
to the essays online please visit

mercials, or even playing in front
of crowds of thousands. No, they
do it because its fun, its fast
paced, and they get some pretty
cool nicknames.
The girls of South Jersey
Roller Derby have been rocking
and rolling (mostly rolling) since
2007, when current president and
founder Melissa Morera, aka
Mos Deathly, moved up from Vir-
ginia with her sister and organ-
ized the league.
What started as a five-skater,
all girl team that practiced out-
doors in a public park has grown
into a co-ed league consisting of
70 skaters and a home skating
rink with a fully-formed banked
racetrack. The league has four in-
house teams and two traveling co-
ed teams that travel along the
East Coast skating against other
roller derby squads.
The South Jersey Roller Derby
has its own rink/stadium in West
Deptford where it hosts its match-
es. It also just purchased its first
banked track, The Green Ma-
chine, for $10,000 from the San
Diego Derby Dolls, Morera said.
Its a historic track, she said,
which has seen thousands of
matches played on its surface.
I had always wanted to play
roller derby. Ive been a fan since I
was a little kid. There was a big
revival of the sport back in the
early 2000s but there was no
league in South Jersey. We actual-
ly started at Skate 2000 in
Bridgeton and then moved into
the Deptford skating center, and
now were in our own center,
Morera said. We actually started
by skating outside in parks before
we had our own center. We got
our first participants through
Craigslist and MySpace. Its real-
ly grown exponentially.
Roller derby has had a long his-
tory in the country, with roots in
banked track competitions dating
back to the 1930s. However, as the
sport went through the decades, it
started to take a turn into the
sports entertainment arena
(think the WWE) with predeter-
mined outcomes and hokey gim-
micks (like hoops of fire and alli-
gator pits).
You probably wont see many
alligator pits or cattle prods at the
South Jersey Roller Derby, unless
a coach needs a new motivational
tool for practice.
Each match consists of several
jams, where five members of
each team skate around the
banked track. When a jam offi-
cially begins, each teams block-
ers and pivots try to clear the way
for their jammers, who start out

behind the pack. Teams score by
getting their jammer up to the
front of the pack, and a point is
given for each time a jammer
passes an opposing team member
after lapping the pack.
Each game consists of four, 15-
minute periods, where an unlim-
ited number of jams can take
place. Whichever team has the
most points after the fourth peri-
od wins the match.
Its a fast paced, exciting game
(even without alligator pits) that
attracts a number of athletic
skaters from all sorts of back-
grounds.
Im actually an accountant,
said Stephanie McGarvey, aka
Punch Drunk Shove. We have
psychologists, nurses and even
lawyers on our team.
McGarvey a member of the
A traveling team and the in-
league Big Rig Bettys squad
graduated from Widener Univer-
sity in 2009, and as a past rugby
athlete was looking to satiate her
blood lust in another sport (or
maybe she was just looking to
stay in shape) and joined the
league a year and a half ago.
Im primarily a power blocker.
I have to simultaneously assist
my jammer through the pack and
block the opposing jammer. I han-
dle the blockers as well; there are
always a ton of things going on in
the jam. Im not so much a point
scorer, she said. Its been a
blast. Its better than I thought,
even better than I thought it
would be. The best part for me is
the camaraderie of all the girls
and guys; its really like a second
family.
