JOB-EMBEDDED

61

Job-embedded professional development refers to teacher learning that is grounded in day-to-day teaching practice and is designed to enhance teachers content-specific instructional practices with the intent of improving student learning. Job-embedded professional development is a shared, ongoing process that is locally rooted and makes a direct connection between learning and application in daily practice, thereby requiring active teacher involvement in cooperative, inquiry-based work. Memphis City Schools Policy 5.3084 requires all teachers to earn 57 hours of professional development yearly. This high-quality jobembedded professional development is aligned with state standards for student academic achievement and any related local educational agency and school improvement goals. Collegial coaching used to increase teachers professional dialogue and help them to reflect on their work. Content-focused coaching (Collaborative meetings) zeroing in on the daily tasks of planning, teaching, and reflecting on lessons suggesting a framework and tools for addressing standards, curriculum, principles of learning, and lesson design and assessment. Mentoring facilitates learning, model and demonstrate lessons, co-plan, co-teach, and provide feedback, while building and maintaining a trusting relationship. Peer Coaching- two or more professional colleagues working together to improve professional knowledge and skills. PLC (Professional Learning Community)- An ongoing process through which teachers and administrators work collaboratively to seek and share learning and to act on their learning, their goal being to enhance their effectiveness as professionals for students benefit Team members who regularly collaborate toward continued improvement in meeting learner needs through a shared curricular-focused vision Peer observations - Formative peer observation assists in the improvement of teaching. Summative peer observation involves the evaluation of teaching effectiveness used for merit, promotion, and/or tenure decisions. Both formative and summative observations can be based on the same observation instruments. Vertical Teaming - A vertical team is a group of educators from various grade levels in a given discipline who work cooperatively to develop and implement a vertically aligned program aimed at helping more students acquire the academic skills necessary for success.
62

Book study - promote conversations among teachers and school staff that will lead to the application of new ideas in classrooms and improvement of existing skills. Data Teams (Analysis) - Teachers reconvene to analyze the effectiveness of the instructional strategies selected and implemented at the previous data team meeting by examining student performance data that was measured using common assessments. Self-Assessment - the process of "knowing yourself." It involves taking an inventory of your likes, dislikes, personal characteristics, values, wants, and needs. It is the first part of the career management process.
