Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

8:30 am Deacon Fred Francl

It is hard to believe that Deacon Frank Lillig was Ordained through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to the office of the Permanent Diaconate. Though the time has surely flown, it is hard to believe that he has been a deacon such a short time. In the many years I have know Deacon Frank he has always been the go-to person on Church history and knowledge of all the families in the parish of Christ the King. We are truly blessed to have him and Camille in our parish. Please join the staff, clergy, lay ministers and other parishioners in congratulating Deacon Frank on his ten year anniversary at 10:00 Mass on September 25th, 2011. We will be having light refreshments after Mass to reminisce with Deacon Frank and his wife Camille, and the whole Lillig family, on the ten years; he has served as Deacon, in our parish and the Diocese. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Todays Gospel reading continues Jesus instructions on being good stewards of others the direction that if we love Jesus Christ, we must forgive an individual 77 times. The reading compels us to consider one of the most difficult practices of Christian discipleship. Forgiveness is the way of Jesus, the way of the cross. Vengeance, bitterness and hatred seem so much easier and certainly more desirable. Forgiveness is a hard road to travel, but it is the only road that leads to life in Christ. Consider this week who you need to forgive.

Blood Drive
Christ the King Parish Blood Drive Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Located in the Parish Life Center SUNDAY, October 16, 2011 8:00 am to 1:00 P.M. To schedule your appointment please CALL LifeSource at (877) 543-3768 or register online at www.lifesource.org and use code L708 Appointments Recommended. Walk-ins Welcome! Sign-up in the narthex on Saturday October 8th & 9th after masses Appointments preferred! Save 3 Lives -Please donate blood!

Christian stewards do not stand idly by, helpless or disengaged. They open their hearts to conversion and draw closer to those who suffer. Please consider giving to the green! (green envelope) mortgage.

A Stewardship Prayer for September

Loving Father, A world made in your image and likeness is desperate for your healing touch. It is a place where people do not have enough water, or enough food, or enough medicine even though there is enough of these things in the world. It is a realm where people hunger for freedom and are tortured and killed for this yearning. It is a world where there is much anger and hatred, distrust and little peace. We ourselves tend to avoid those we dont know, those who dont look like us, or think like us, or worship like us. And yet you call to us to be good stewards of our neighbors; to love them as we love ourselves; to love them with greater hearts than we can imagine. Give us the courage we need to be better stewards of our neighbors; and to believe what you tell us, that you will give us everything we need to love in your name, so your healing may truly be made manifest in this world. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A 9/11 Victim's Wife Learns to Forgive

Cheryl McGuinness learned this secret of mercy at the foot of a strange and terrible cross. She is the widow of the co-pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, which was hijacked and smashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. That morning, she and her two teenage children cried and suffered at the horrible loss of Tom, her husband. In the midst of her tears, she remembered something that her husband, knowing that a pilot's job is risky, had told her long before: "If anything ever happens to me, you have to trust God. God will get you through it She took that to heart, but it wasn't easy. A turning point in the process came almost a year after the attack, when she went to Ground Zero to participate in the Victim Compensation Fund. When she arrived to Ground Zero, emotionally stunned, she looked into the pit where the buildings had once stood. As she looked at the remains, her eyes fixed on the only steel structure left standing. It was in the shape of a cross. She kept looking from the pit to the cross and her eyes focused on the cross. She prayed in the silence of her heart, "Lord, they killed my husband." Then she seemed to see herself at the foot of another Cross, Christ's cross, on Calvary. She heard God in her heart, inviting her to forgive the terrorists who had committed this atrocity. She asked Him why, and the answer that came into her soul was: "Because I forgave you." It was a moment of grace and of spiritual clarity for Cheryl, in which she saw that although she had never committed horrible acts of terrorism, she had indeed committed sins - she had done evil. And Jesus had forgiven her. It was then that she felt the inner strength she hadn't felt before, the strength to forgive her husband's murderers, and it changed the direction of her life. God doesn't ask us to forgive on our own strength, but he gives us the strength to forgive by forgiving us first: that's the secret to learning Christian mercy.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

This is a group picture of the Prayer Shawl Ministry recently set up on July 13th to show that we are a caring parish providing comfort and blessings with our knitted and crocheted shawls and lap throws. We minister to our elderly living at home or in nursing homes, the critically ill, and babies. We are proud to say that on August 28th we sent 30 prayer shawls and lap throws to Lexington House and Beacon Hill Nursing Homes after Deacon Frank Lillig blessed them. Please feel free to request an item from our ministry for your loved ones who are in need of some comfort. We would like to extend another invitation to the ladies of the parish to join us on Wednesdays in the East Room from 1:00-3:00. We are always looking for new members. If you need to refresh your skills in knitting or crocheting, everyone is willing to help you. Simple patterns are exchanged, and we pray for the community during our time together. Yarn donations are always welcomed. You can call Bonnie Venezio at 630 519-3190 for any questions or to register.

The Anniversary of 9/11: How do Christian Stewards Respond?

When we celebrate the Eucharist together on Sunday, September 11, 2011, we will already have been surrounded by vivid reminders of the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the United States. How should Christian stewards commemorate this anniversary? Catholics embrace a diversity of thought regarding armed conflict and war on terrorism, ranging from variations of the just war tradition to varying degrees of pacifism. They hold a deep appreciation of our uniformed men and women who serve at home and abroad. On a darker note, after ten years, armed conflict has not yielded the intended results. Thousands of U.S. service personnel have died or been injured. American ideals have become too readily compromised. There is political disunity. Pre-emptive wars are now considered morally acceptable. And there exists a moral numbness to the killing of innocents who live in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. As we gather around the Lords Table on September 11, we will hear sobering expressions during the proclamation of the Word of God: Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the Lord? And, I say to you, you must forgive not seven times but seventy-seven times. Jesus, the prophet Sirach, and Saint Paul taught us how not only to overcome evil, but to redeem it. Christian stewards, as active instruments of Gods mercy, understand the redemptive quality of living the Gospel. Indeed, Christian stewards understand that the cessation of violence and armed conflict can only be realized when Gods peace and justice are pursued for the entire human family. The anniversary of 9/11 and the October 6 invasion of Afghanistan offer an opportunity to re-think how Christian stewards respond to violence and conflict. This response begins with prayer: prayer for the victims and their families; for the innocents who continued to suffer and die long after 9/11; for peace in the world; even for those we consider our enemies. Christian stewards do not stand idly by, helpless or disengaged. They open their hearts to conversion and draw closer to those who suffer. They seek ways to diffuse violence and conflict. They seek to understand those with whom they disagree. They encourage leaders to act with prudence and compassion. Christian stewards remember those who have been lost and memorialize this day by re-committing their lives to following in the footsteps of Jesus to make the world a better place.

Life Matters: The Death Penalty

We live in a culture of death: a culture torn by abortion and euthanasia, by wanton violence, war, murder, and hatred. Life is treated as if it were cheap, and many are the threats to the dignity of human life. Yet we believe that all human life is from God, and he alone is the master of life and of death. Blessed John Paul II made the defense of the dignity of all human life the centerpiece of his pontificate. The death penalty presents itself as a complex moral issue because of the apparently conflicting demands of justice on one hand and charity on the other. Some crimes are so serious and so heinous that they seem to cry out for the ultimate punishment of death. And yet the Gospel message is forever one of forgiveness, of reconciliation, of committed charity toward all without exceptions. Christian teaching since the time of Christ has never considered the death penalty in itself intrinsically evil. The Fifth Commandment which instructs us thou shall not kill, has always been understood to refer to innocent human life, and not to those guilty of the most terrible crimes. Christians have always believed in the right of self-defense because every person has an obligation to guard his own life as a gift from God. And society clearly has a right to defend itself from aggressors, both external (by means of war as a last resort) and internal (such as murderers, serial killers, terrorists, and those guilty of treason). The question for a Christian is not so much whether there has been validity for the death penalty, but whether it should or should not be imposed today. And today it is clear that the death penalty no longer serves a useful purpose in protecting the sanctity of human life. Perhaps once it was the only way society could protect itself from those who would destroy the life of others, but today in most modern nations, judicial and penal systems have improved so much that they effectively remove further danger to innocent people by incarcerating the perpetrators of criminal violence. Imprisonment is effective in removing the offender from society. Importantly, it allows time for repentance and rehabilitation. And the one sure result of executing prisoners is to make us as a people more vengefulseeking retribution and satisfying our outrage at the violent crime by more violence.
