RAM vs ROM RAM and ROM are both different types of memories used in any computer to make it fast

and to enable it to access information stored in the computer. Every computer comes with a certain amount of physical memory which is actually chips that hold data. This memory is referred to as Random Access Memory or RAM. RAM is a part of hardware that stores operating systems application programs and currently running processes that can be accessed randomly, i.e. in any order that the user desires. Data in RAM stays for only as long as the computer is running, and gets deleted as soon as computer is switched off. RAM usually comes in the form of microchips of different sizes such as 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB etc. Computers are so designed that this RAM can be increased up to a certain capacity. ROM, on the other hand refers to Read Only Memory. Every computer comes fitted with this memory that holds instructions for starting up the computer. This is a memory that has data written permanently on it and is not reusable. However, there are certain kinds of read only memory that can be rewritten but they are called Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory, or EPROM. These are generally in the form of CD-ROM or Floppy Disk that can load the OS to the RAM. Similarities between RAM and ROM end up with both being types of memories. There are glaring differences between the RAM and the ROM. Difference between RAM and ROM RAM is Random Access Memory, while ROM stands for Read Only Memory. RAM is volatile and is erased when the computer is switched off. ROM is nonvolatile and generally cannot be written to. RAM is used for both read and write while ROM is used only for reading. RAM needs electricity to flow to retain information while ROM is permanent. RAM is analogous to a blackboard on which information can be written with a chalk and erased any number of times, while ROM is permanent and can only be read. One example is BIOS (basic input output system) that runs when computer is switched on and it prepares disk drives and processor to load OS from disk. The system software is also installed during the installation of the operating system. However, the application software utilizes the capabilities of the computer on which it is installed. System Software

The programs and the file that comprises the operating system are called system software. These files include configuration files, system preferences, system services, libraries of functions and the drivers for the hardware installed on the computer. The computer programs in system software include compilers, system utilities, assemblers, debuggers and file management tools. Once you install the operating system, the system software is also installed. Program such Software update or Windows update can be used to update the system software. However, the end user does not run the system software. For example, while using the web browser, you dont need to use the assembler program. System software is also called low-level software as it runs at most basic level of the computer. It just creates a graphical user interface thorough which the user can interact with hardware with the help of operating system. System software just runs at the back so you dont need to bother about it. The system software provides an environment to run application software and it controls the computer as well as the applications installed on the machine. Application software The subclass of a computer program which utilizes the capabilities of computer is called application software. Application here means the application software and the implementation. The example of application software programs includes media players, spreadsheets and word processors. When multiple applications are packaged together then it is called application suite. There is a common user interface in each application suite which makes it easier for the user to learn different applications. In some cases, such as Microsoft Office, the various application programs have the ability to interact with each other. This facility is very handy for the user. For example, a user can embed the spreadsheet in a word processor using the application software. Application software cannot run without the presence of system software. Difference between system software and application software System software gets installed when the operating system is installed on the computer while application software is installed according to the requirements of the user. System software includes programs such as compilers, debuggers, drivers, assemblers while application software includes media players, word processors, and spreadsheet programs. Generally, users do not interact with system software as it works in the background whereas users interact with application software while doing different activities. A computer may not require more than one type of system software while there

may be a number of application software programs installed on the computer at the same time. System software can run independently of the application software while application software cannot run without the presence of the system software. We can say that an Operating System (OS) is Software that acts as an interface between you and the hardware. It not only contains drivers used to speak the hardware's language, but also offers you a very specific graphical user interface (GUI) to control the computer. An OS can also act as an interface (from the hardware) to the other software. A complex OS like Windows or Linux or Mac OS offers the services of an OS, but also has applications built in. Solitaire, Paint, Messenger, etc. are all applications. Application software is the software that you install onto your Operating System. It consists of the programs that actually let you do things with your computer. These Applications are written to run under the various Operating Systems. These include things like your word processing programs, spread sheets, email clients, web browser, games, etc. Many programs, such as most of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, are written in both Mac and Windows versions, but you still have to have the right version for your OS. So, the Operating system of a Computer is the Software that allows the Computer work. It provides the framework under which the Applications run. An operating system is the type of Computer system you have such as Window XP or Window 95, 98, Mac, etc. The Applications are the Software that actually allows the user to do something with the Computer. Without the applications, all you can do is change settings and navigate among the folders. You can purchase its CD from a software company or download from a software companys web site.

`Computers have become one basic necessity in the lives of most individuals nowadays. From the bulky computer monitors and poor memory capacity CPUs, technology has evidently made remedies for life to be more convenient and less stressful. Thus, laptops and portable devices have gradually emerged through the course of time. However, despite such obvious changes, it has always been a fact that hardware and software are two vital elements of any computer system. Within the context of software, there exist two types that are essentially utilized for the entire system to function. One is the system software and the other is application software.

System software is basically the main the functional system of every computer program. It contains the basic functional units such as the program files, system services, basic configuration units, system back-ups and main drivers. Application software, on the other hand, is one part of the computer program that permits the access and utilization of various available applications made compatible to existing computer units and programs. Apart from their difference in definition, system software and application differ in function. While the system software is installed together with the installation of the operating system for the unit to optimally function, application software will only be installed once the required of the desired application are met. Another difference between the two softwares is their visibility to the users. It is but typical for users to interact with the application being installed since such softwares are created to provide activites for users. System software, however, does not function in this manner. It more often takes the back seat and quietly functions on its own. Although such subjects are quite foreign to most individuals, such elements are vital to truly experience the life in technology. Static RAM vs Dynamic RAM RAM (Random Access Memory) is the primary memory used in a computer. Its individual memory cells can be accessed in any sequence, and therefore it is called the random access memory. RAMs are divided in to two categories as Static RAM (SRAM) and Dynamic RAM (DRAM). SRAM uses transistors to store a single bit of data and it does not need to be

periodically refreshed. DRAM uses a separate capacitor to store each bit of data and it needs to be periodically refreshed to maintain the charge in the capacitors. What is Static RAM? SRAM is a type of RAM and it is a volatile memory, which looses its data when the power is turned off. In a SRAM, each bit that stores data is made up of four or six transistors that make up a flip-flop. There are additional transistors that are used to control read and write accesses of storage cells. Even though typical SRAMs use six transistors to store each bit, there are SRAMs that use eight, ten or more transistors to store a single bit. When the number of transistors is reduced, the size of the memory cell decreases. Each SRAM cell can be in three different states called read, write and standby. A cell is in the reading state when data has been requested and it is in writing state when the data in the cell is modified. The cell is in the standby state when it is idling. What is Dynamic RAM? DRAM is also a volatile memory that uses separate capacitors to store each bit. Capacitors when not charged represent the value 0 of a bit and when charged represent the value 1. Since the capacitors discharge with time, they need to be refreshed periodically to maintain the values stored in them. Each memory cell in a DRAM consists of a capacitor and a transistor and these cells are arranged in a square array. DRAMS are widely used for main memories in personal computers and game stations since they are cheaper. DRAMs are manufactured as integrated circuits (ICs) that come in plastic packages with metal pins that could be connected in to busses. Currently there are DRAMs in the market that are manufactured as plug-in modules, which are easier to handle. Single In-line Pin Package (SIPP), Single In-line Memory Module (SIMM) and Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) are some examples of such modules. What is the difference between Static RAM and Dynamic RAM? Even though both SRAMs and DRAMs are volatile memories, they have some important differences. Since the DRAM requires a single capacitor and a transistor for each memory cell, it is much simpler in the structure than the SRAM, which uses six transistors for each memory cell. On the other hand, due to the use of capacitors, DRAM requires to be refreshed periodically as opposed to the SRAM. DRAMs are less expensive and slower than SRAMs. Therefore they are used for the large main memory of personal computers, workstations, etc., while SRAM are used for the smaller and faster cache memory.
