Data Analysis Project: Algebra 1 The purpose of this project is to survey people on a particular question you have created.

You will collect data and then use your Algebra skills to analyze it. This project will be due on Friday, September 30th, 2011. Part 1: Data Collection A] Choose a topic for your project that you can survey people about. Your question should be something that interests you and should be written in a way that allows those surveyed to select an answer. Potential Project Questions: How many hours do you spend on homework per night? How many text messages do you send per month? How many hours do you spend on facebook per day (or week)? B] Collect at least 25 data points. C] Organize the data into a table. Example: Name Hours Spent on Homework Shawn 2 Jalan 1.5 Casey 1 Part 2: Analysis A] Calculate the following measure of central tendency for your set of data. Show ALL work. Mean Median Mode Range B] Organize your calculations into a table that clearly displays each measure. Next to each measure, describe in a full sentence how you found it (step-by-step) and what it tells you about your data. Example: Mean = 1.5 I added all of the data together and divided by the number of data pieces. The mean tells me that the average person surveyed spends 1.5 hours on homework.

Name_____________________________________ C] Determine if your data has any outliers. If it does, state them in a complete sentence and explain how you knew they were outliers. If it does not, state how you know that there are no outliers. Part 3: Data Displays A] Create three different data displays for your data. You may choose from the following: Bar Graph Pie Chart Histogram Box and Whisker Plot Stem and Leaf Plot Be sure to include titles, labels, and keys (legends) for each of your representations. Part 4: Written Reflection and Further Analysis A] Based on your analysis in Part 2, decide which measure of central tendency most accurately describes your data. In at least 2 complete sentences, state why you chose that particular measure. B]Refer to your data table for the following further analysis. 1. Drop your highest piece of data from your data set. 2. Recalculate your 4 measure of central tendency. 3. In a table, display all 4 new measures of central tendency and how it changed from your initial calculation. Example: New Median = 8 The median of the data set decreased by 4. This project will be 100 points in your B-day grade. It must be neatly organized and turned in by Friday, September 30th. All parts must be in order and stapled together. The following timeline and rubric will be used to assess your project.
