WEEK 1: Pre-Interaction Phase

General Objectives: Within one week of pre-interaction phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will be able to review and augment his knowledge, skills as well as attitude on the different psychiatric nursing concepts and be self-aware to be physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and psychologically prepared to interact in a therapeutic way with the psychiatric patients.

Specific Objectives: Within one week of pre-interaction phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will specifically be able to: Review on the different psychiatric disorders like mood,

personality, schizophrenia, sleep, sexual and substance abuse disorders.

Comprehend the proper management on the different psychiatric disorders from medications, therapeutic communication and milieu environment. Improve the different therapeutic communication skills as learned in the classroom. Conduct self-awareness and be able to know its significant importance in dealing with psychiatric patients. Scrutinize ones spirits, qualms and concerns in handling

psychiatric patients. Accomplish initial assessment by studying on the patients charts and by asking other health team members. Articulate plan on how to interact with the patient and its significant importance to the condition of the patient.

WEEK 2: Orientation Phase

General objectives: Within one week of orientation phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will be able to develop ones personal and professional growth in interrelating with the psychiatric patients.

Specific Objectives: Within one week of orientation phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will specifically be able to: Familiarize with the patients condition. Build trust and establish rapport by demonstrating acceptance and utilizing therapeutics communication techniques. Establish therapeutic contract with patient indicating the time, place and length of sessions; the people who will be involved in the treatment plan as well as the clients responsibilities and nurses responsibilities during the care. Institute a therapeutic environment guaranteeing safety and privacy of the patient. Assess the clients need, coping strategies, defense mechanisms as well as strengths and weaknesses.

Week 3: Working Phase

General objectives: Within one week of working phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will be able to improve his knowledge, skills and attitude in functioning with the patient on meeting the agreed goals.

Specific Objectives: Within one week of working phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will specifically be able to: Enhance his therapeutic communication skills in dealing with the client. Overcome anxiety (if there is any) in interacting with the patient.

Gather the data in detail from the primary and secondary sources Recognize the specific needs of the patient. Support the patient to identify his or her problem. Aid the patient to communicate his or her problems (if any) Inspire the patient to use new pattern of behaviours Help the patient finding an alternative resolution to his or her problems. Help the client to cultivate positive coping behaviours.

Week 4: Termination Phase

General objectives: Within one week of termination phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will be able to cultivate personal and professional growth and enhance knowledge, skills and attitude in completing the interaction with the client.

Specific Objectives: Within one week of orientation phase in the psychiatric ward, the student nurse will specifically be able to: Convey a therapeutic end with the student nurse- client relationship. Appraise ones feelings about the former professional relationship. Evaluate any progress with the set goals. Institute mechanisms for meeting future therapy needs. Summarize the entire communication and follow up treatments.
