Hot magnetic separator

PyroMag
Outotec has expanded its line of coal-based, ferrous technology offerings for the pre-reduction of iron ore fines, iron sand or ilmenite, in combination with smelting or hot briquetting with its new PyroMag hot magnetic separator. The new technology allows for magnetic separation at temperatures well above 600C. The PyroMag can be applied to all coal-based direct reduction processes for iron ores, iron sand and ilmenite, such as rotary kilns (SL/RN) or circulating fluidized bed (Circofer ). The units enable removal of excess carbon and coal ash (socalled char) at elevated temperatures allowing hot feed of the pre-reduced material into the smelting furnace. This minimizes smelting energy requirements and ensures product quality. The PyroMag can also be used in other applications High-temperature char removal ensures product quality

PyroMag within the process chain.

In coal-based direct reduction plants, including SL/RN rotary kilns, separation is typically at low temperatures on conventional dry magnets; however, to be energy efficient, separating at high temperatures is recommended. Electric arc furnace for steelmaking The PyroMag can be applied when highly-metallized direct reduced iron (DRI) is fed hot into an electric arc furnace (EAF) for steelmaking, thus significantly lowering the electric power consumption necessary for smelting. The PyroMag can then be utilized for char removal from the hot product stream before charging it into the EAF. Submerged arc furnace

Submerged arc furnaces are used for either pig iron production based on pre-reduced low-grade iron ore, or in titanium slag production combined with pig iron production that utilizes pre-reduced ilmenite. In both cases, the PyroMag can be applied for char removal. HBI production When planning to ship DRI, it must be briquetted at temperatures of at least 650C to form HBI (hot briquetted iron), which, after cooling to ambient temperatures, is a commodity ready for oceangoing vessel transport. To produce high-quality HBI, both the DRIs carbon and the coal ash contents must be low, which can be achieved by installing the PyroMag in front of the briquetters.
