Title: ECONOMIC, POLITICAL & SOCIAL IMPLICATION OF

OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS ON THE CURRENT
PHILIPPINE SETTING

Reaction:

Nowadays many Filipinos were migrating to other countries.

Migration is to move from one country or region and settle in another, it

involves movement from one place to another(either w/in or across local or

national boarders) for various purpose.

According to the speaker, Atty. Golda Myra R. Roma there are 8.23

million Filipinos are working over 160 countries as of December 2006.

There are many reasons why Filipino citizens are going to other countries.

There purpose in going abroad are the ff:

1. to work

2. permanently reside

3. scholarship

4. tourism

5. to put business in other country

6. to get medical assistance

 7. pilgrimage

The push factors of immigrating are:

1. poverty

2. unemployment & underemployment

3. lack of opportunities

4. low to minimum wages

5. competition

6. working conditions

7. attractive benefits

8. privileges

9. conducive environment

10.advance skills & technology

Overseas Filipino Workers are usually working in some certain place

like, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Hongkong, United of Arab Emirates,

Taiwan, Japan, Kuwait, Iraq, United States and Canada. In Europe, they

need 25 million workers yearly, in Japan they need 10 million workers

yearly, in United States they need 11 million and they need 100 million

workers yearly.

The three categories of people who are staying in other countries are

Overseas Filipino Workers, permanent residents and irregular migrants w/c

they’re passing through cross boarder, there Visa were already expired and

leaving their country with documents but not qualified or fake.

Working abroad is not that easy but its very advantageous in every

individual because of high wages but economically its not that good because

we studied in out own country but other country benefits us. In the absence

of migration population size will decline faster and the population ageing

will be more rapid.

There are few establishments established by Filipino workers, like SPA

located near at Blue Wave the owner is a Filipino worker working in Saudi

Arabia, the Asian Hospital were established by Filipino doctor’s in America

and also the Asian Institute established by OFW’s. these are some

accomplishments of OFW’s, they worked abroad but still they invest in

their own country w/c is in the Philippines.

We can not control the number of migrants because of availability of

work in our country and low amount of salary. As a student, we should try

our best to have a work in our country after we graduated so that our country

will benefit us and we should be proud and be contented of what we have

right now.
