An Exegetical Study of Rom 6:1-7 Rom 6:1-7 What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abou nd? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3 Do you no t know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized int o His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like His, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like His. 6 We know that our old self was cru cified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no long er be enslaved to sin. 7 For whoever has died is freed from sin (NSRV). I. Introduction A. WHY STUDY THIS PASSAGE? Rom 6:1-7 presents the apex of the epistle. Herein Paul shows the reality of ou r need for salvation in Jesus. He shows why we need salvation and how that take

s place. Life without God will end with the eternal wrath of God. However, if the person applies faith to Gods grace they will not be the objects of His wrath; rather they will be in a proper relationship with Him. How does this affect th is life? This affects the way we live in this life. Jesus has freed us from th e punishment of our sin by being our atonement. We have been justified- pardone d (acquitted) from our sin. We have been set free from the power of sin. In Rom 6 Paul tells about the overcoming of the power of sin. Paul describes si n as having power over the children of Adam. However the power of sin is broken for the persons in Christ. Therefore, those who are in Christ are crucified wi th Christ and are no longer under the power of sin to be a slave to sin. They h ave been set free and are now enslaved to Christ. The theme of the chapter is f reedom from the power of sin and freedom into Christ-enslaved to His power. B. THESIS STATEMENT This passage Rom 6:1-7 is the top of Pauls epistle to the Christians in Rome. It explains what has happened to the believer in the spirit and teaches the believ er who heis in Christ, and how to allow their life to show it. This is a transi tion from what God has done to how this will be lived out in our daily lives mom ent by moment. II. HISTORICAL CONTEXT A. AUTHOR, AUDIENCE, DATE, OCCASION

Romans was written by the Apostle Paul (1:1). Paul is on his third missionary j ourney. Therefore, Paul is in Corinth at the end of his third missionary journe y. So, one could say it was about A.D. 55. He is writing this letter to the C hristians in Rome where he has never been. Paul did not actually make it to Ro me until his imprisonment. He, along with a multiple number of other prisoners, is transported to Rome for trial. Paul usually did not address the letter to someone personally (cf. I Cor; II Cor; I and II Thess, Phil, Eph (Ephesus and As ia Minor), and Gal). The only time he would greet persons by name is when he wa s writing to a geographical location in which he has not yet been. In Rom and C ol Paul does greet persons by name. He personally knows these individuals. It seems that he would add a personal greeting in the letter to specific people, no t because it is a private letter, but because he was showing who ever would read or hear the letter that he was friends with these persons. This would be simi lar to a minister today showing his license; showing that this denomination appr oves of my ministry. This For Now this why letter is an indication that Paul sees a transition over twenty years, he has been planting churches in he is writing to the Rome church. We do not really to the Roman church. There are three main theories about the reason for the writing of Rom. 1. Some believe this is a list of Pauls missionary strategy. He wants to go to Spain by way of Rome. Spain is at the end of the world for these people. It would be gr eat for a community of faith to be somewhere in the middle of his journey; thus the church at Rome would fulfill that function. This theory says Paul gives his resume in Rom 15:22-24. 2. Some believe this is a compendium of Paul s theolog y, some that Paul was writing a summary of his theology. This is not his intent ion because he left out many major points: Lord s Supper, Second Coming, and an explanation of the church. 3. Some believe this is Pauls Pastoral response, he w as aware of the local problems of the church: libertinism, abuse of grace, abuse of strong drink, food issues (pork), arrogance. Therefore, Paul writes this le tter to help with these problems. With this Paul shows his theological prefer
