Runner Dottie Gray from page 1B

Although Gray didnt start running until she was in her 50s she was busy raising six children before that shes glad she happened onto the hobby. I think it was very fortunate how I became a runner, said Gray, who now has 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. I enjoy running. Dave McNaughton, former St. Louis Track Club president, can vouch for that. She enjoys it so much, he said. She has a lot of determination and shes very focused on what she does. Its just part of who she is. Gray said she likes all the benefits running provides. It makes you feel better and stronger, and gives you more energy, she said. It just makes you feel so good. Thats why she still walks four days a week, does a training run once a week and then races on the weekends. When shes not running, shes usually volunteering at one of the races. Gray wants to inspire others and she has.

Dottie has been inspiring me for the past two decades.

- Nancy Weigley
former director St. Louis Senior Olympics
Dottie has been inspiring me for the past two decades, said Nancy Weigley, former director of St. Louis Senior Olympics. No matter what, shes out there running and smiling, and encouraging others to participate. Shes a positive force. McNaughton echoed that sentiment. She is inspiring to some of us who are not that old that we can continue to run when we get a little older, and of course to competitors in her age group, he said. Shes one of the many in the track club who have continued to be part of the running scene in St. Louis and we appreciate her being out there.

Help Celebrate 20 Years At Powder Valley Nature Center

Oct. 22 event will feature music, activities and more

Hidden Treasure
Colonial Village is a secluded community of 72 apartment homes in five colonial style, red brick buildings, situated on four landscaped acres in the heart of Webster Groves. The apartment community was built in 1964 on the former site of Old Orchard Gardens at 7976 Big Bend Boulevard as a senior citizen complex. Today, Colonial Village residents are active seniors 55 or older who truly appreciate a senior lifestyle. The village surrounds a courtyard carpeted with bluegrass and adorned with hundreds of eyecatching flowers, with up to a thousand perennials blooming throughout the summer. A private swimming pool and clubhouse have been built at the edge of the grounds. Lovely, brick walls in the garden around the pool and grounds ensure privacy for our residents. While Colonial Village was under construction, particular attention was paid to soundproofing. Compressors for the central air conditioning units for each apartment are located in the foundation to ensure quiet operation. The spacious floor plan has two bedrooms, two full bathrooms and the option of wall to wall carpeting or gleaming refinished hardwood floors. The fully appointed kitchen features builtin oven, electric stovetop, frost free refrigerator, garbage disposal, dishwasher and microwave. The appliances and cabinetry are all in neutral almond tones. The spacious L-shaped living/dining room has a ceiling fan, chair rail, crown molding and accent wall feature. Throughout the apartment are mini-blind window treatments and float-away closet doors for ease of operation. Plush landscaping with outdoor sitting areas, club house, social activities, lighted pool, laundry, attentive on-site staff, 24-hour emergency response, a two-year rate lock-in lease availability, fabulous residents and a variety of local businesses within walking distance are only part of what make Colonial Village an outstanding community. Apartments currently lease at $835 per month. Cats always welcome. Please call Terri at 314-9681863 for more information and to learn of current specials or to arrange an appointment to tour our beautiful Colonial Village.

Womans Place Co-Founder Honored For Years Of Service

by Brittany Nay
Sister Irma Kennebeck has led more than 5,000 abused women to healthy, productive lifestyles. The co-founder of Maplewood-based Womans Place, a domestic violence dropin center for women, retired from her directors post earlier this year. She will be honored for her 14 years of service during the centers Iris Ball on Friday, Oct. 14, 6:30 p.m. at Xavier Ballroom. Women have said, You saved my life, I dont know what I wouldve done without this place, and I feel at home here, Sister Kennebeck, 72, said. We all need a place like that. Sister Kennebeck, a Crestwood resident, and Jeanne Meurer co-founded Womans Place in 1998 as a not-for-profit organization supported by Franciscan Sisters of Mary, private grants and public donations. The center, which helps 300 women during 2,000 visits a year, has been a vehicle for women to leave lives of domestic abuse and take paths toward education, professional careers and healthy family environments. Women in a domestic abuse situation can come to Womans Place free of charge at any time to seek help. Three full-time staff members and multiple volunteers serve the women with resources and program information. The purpose is to help women empower themselves to make choices they need for their well-being and that of their children, Sister Kennebeck said. Once women are validated, they will take the opportunity to change their situation. Sister Kennebeck said Womans Place

How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it!

Violence doesnt just occur in povertystricken areas. Domestic abuse and sexual abuse have no geographic boundaries.

Sister Irma Kennebeck, center, retired earlier this year from her position as director at Womans Place, 7372 Marietta Ave. in Maplewood.

remains the only free drop-in center in the state. It is important for the center to be free and accessible without an appointment to give abused women ample opportunities to get help, she said. When women become aware of the need for safety, there is only a narrow window of opportunity, she said. If a woman has to wait to be seen, it may be too late or things will get better and the cycle (of abuse) will continue. Womans Place programs include support groups for domestic violence and sexual assault as well as educational seminars such as self-empowerment and healthy relationships. The centers staff also is developing a support group for family and friends of abused women.

Sister Kennebeck said the centers high attendance numbers from throughout the St. Louis area show its great need for domestic abuse services. Violence doesnt just occur in poverty-stricken areas, she said. Domestic abuse and sexual abuse have no geographic boundaries. When women are helped through the centers programs, it not only impacts their lives, but the safety of the entire community, Sister Kennebeck said. We have seen women that have gotten back on the road to healing and safety and now they are giving back to the community because they are willing and have the freedom to, she said.

No buy-in fee with affordable month-to-month rent.

Iris Ball But the center also will need financial help from the community to keep going, Sister Kennebeck said. One way to contribute to Womans Place is the upcoming Iris Ball, where Sister Kennebeck will be honored. The event, which costs $100 per person, will benefit the center and its services. The ball will include a reception, dinner and an auction, featuring items such as a visit to the taping of Donnybrook on Channel 9, the chance to adopt a rescue puppy, parties and food and wine baskets. Sister Kennebeck said reaching out to others in the community not only benefits them, but also yourself. For me, it has been a privilege for me to work with these women, she said. Theyve made my life better. Womans Place is located at 7372 Marietta Ave. in Maplewood. The center is open weekdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Womans Place welcomes support in many ways, from monetary donations to volunteers. Reunion Of Henry Hough Graduates

A great time was had by all at an all-decade reunion of Henry Hough Elementary School students held Saturday, Sept. 17, at the gazebo and field located on the former school grounds at the corner of Sappington and Lockwood in Glendale. Alums from as far back as the 1930s were in attendance, as well as beloved teachers Marie Andel and Dorothy Dahman. The reunion was organized by Angie Clark Millington, Henry Hough Class of 1979. Another reunion is planned for two years from now. Henry Hough Elementary School was opened by the Kirkwood School District in 1914. The old building was closed in 1982, and demolished in 1984. Former Henry Hough teachers Dorothy Dahman, left, and Marie Andel were in attendance at the reunion. photo by Linda Wynn
