Hidden Treasure
Colonial Village is a secluded community of 72 apartment homes in five colonial style, red brick buildings, situated on four landscaped acres in the heart of Webster Groves. The apartment community was built in 1964 on the former site of Old Orchard Gardens at 7976 Big Bend Boulevard as a senior citizen complex. Today, Colonial Village residents are active seniors 55 or older who truly appreciate a senior lifestyle. The village surrounds a courtyard carpeted with bluegrass and adorned with hundreds of eyecatching flowers, with up to a thousand perennials blooming throughout the summer. A private swimming pool and clubhouse have been built at the edge of the grounds. Lovely, brick walls in the garden around the pool and grounds ensure privacy for our residents. While Colonial Village was under construction, particular attention was paid to soundproofing. Compressors for the central air conditioning units for each apartment are located in the foundation to ensure quiet operation. The spacious floor plan has two bedrooms, two full bathrooms and the option of wall to wall carpeting or gleaming refinished hardwood floors. The fully appointed kitchen features builtin oven, electric stovetop, frost free refrigerator, garbage disposal, dishwasher and microwave. The appliances and cabinetry are all in neutral almond tones. The spacious L-shaped living/dining room has a ceiling fan, chair rail, crown molding and accent wall feature. Throughout the apartment are mini-blind window treatments and float-away closet doors for ease of operation. Plush landscaping with outdoor sitting areas, club house, social activities, lighted pool, laundry, attentive on-site staff, 24-hour emergency response, a two-year rate lock-in lease availability, fabulous residents and a variety of local businesses within walking distance are only part of what make Colonial Village an outstanding community. Apartments currently lease at $835 per month. Cats always welcome. Please call Terri at 314-9681863 for more information and to learn of current specials or to arrange an appointment to tour our beautiful Colonial Village.
Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is holding a special day of activities to commemorate its 20th anniversary. The nature center first opened in October of 1991. The year-long 20th anniversary celebration culminates in a special event Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature with two special guest performances, plus ongoing activities throughout the day that will engage and educate the whole family. The event is free and open to the public with no reservations necessary. We want people to see what a great place this is, said Assistant Nature Center Manager Catherine McGrane, and we hope theyll get an idea of what weve offered the last 20 years. Visitors can enjoy a photo scavenger hunt, a discovery table with live reptiles and amphibians, crafts for kids, and a Powder Valley-version of the popular game show, Win It in a Minute. Contestants can test themselves with unique 60-second challenges that will help give them a greater appreciation of the natural world, like crawling from a simulated snake skin, taking the proboscis challenge, and a trying a deer antler ring toss. Highlights of the event will be

WildHearts unique blend of music and dance moves help enlighten children of all ages about nature and wildlife. At 1 and 2 p.m., The Fishin Magicians, Amy Short and Steve Craig, will bring their exclusive blend of magic, humor, audience participation and fishing to Powder Valley. The duo has performed coastto-coast and appeared on the ESPN cable TV Network. Both lifelong anglers, they weave their genuine love of the outdoors into an entertaining show that will engage people of all ages. In addition, a there will be a ceremonial 20th anniversary cake cutting at 11:30 a.m. Visitors will also have the chance to see the newlyinstalled water feature in the wildlife viewing area. Simulating a natural Ozark spring-fed stream, the display was made possible by the Kathryn G. Favre Foundation for Animals through a donation administered by the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation. It was constructed by the firm Natures Re-Creations. Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center is located at 11715 Cragwold Road in Kirkwood. The nature center is owned and operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Violence doesnt just occur in povertystricken areas. Domestic abuse and sexual abuse have no geographic boundaries.
Sister Irma Kennebeck, center, retired earlier this year from her position as director at Womans Place, 7372 Marietta Ave. in Maplewood.
remains the only free drop-in center in the state. It is important for the center to be free and accessible without an appointment to give abused women ample opportunities to get help, she said. When women become aware of the need for safety, there is only a narrow window of opportunity, she said. If a woman has to wait to be seen, it may be too late or things will get better and the cycle (of abuse) will continue. Womans Place programs include support groups for domestic violence and sexual assault as well as educational seminars such as self-empowerment and healthy relationships. The centers staff also is developing a support group for family and friends of abused women.
Sister Kennebeck said the centers high attendance numbers from throughout the St. Louis area show its great need for domestic abuse services. Violence doesnt just occur in poverty-stricken areas, she said. Domestic abuse and sexual abuse have no geographic boundaries. When women are helped through the centers programs, it not only impacts their lives, but the safety of the entire community, Sister Kennebeck said. We have seen women that have gotten back on the road to healing and safety and now they are giving back to the community because they are willing and have the freedom to, she said.
