ultimately Susan Sertell. Sister Joan and
My Dear People:
Sadness lingers as we realize that this is the
last year Sister Joan and Diane Zicarelli will
administer the P.S.R. classes of our parish.
Parents and catechists who have known this
ace combination of Sister and Diane will
attest to their absolute dedication and
competence in their most important job of
administering the Sunday morning PSR
classes, the sacramental preparation and the
Vacation Bible School. Few people can
imagine the “behind the scenes work” with
the catechists and parents that has so well
been executed by this combination.
Sister Joan finished 41 years of a long and
successful career of teaching the faith and
school administrator when she came to us
with knee replacements ready to keep
working. I remember when she broke her leg
in the sanctuary of the church and she kept
going with the essential help of her partner,
Diane.
When Diane replaced Tracy Ippolito and
Barbara Bess, few people realized at the
time that we had someone who seemed
“born for the job.” I hired Diane because, as
a former student from John Carroll, she has
a sterling character and a deep faith with
experience in the business world. She
melded beautifully into her position as co-
director.
I give God great thanks for sending these two
to us and naturally I give so much thanks to
Sister Joan and Diane for a job so well done.
Sister tells us that her religious order is
assigning her to retirement and Diane seeks
the same status in life, only to give more time
to her family. Diane’s husband is an engineer
for B E & K and is temporarily in Russia,
always desiring more visits from his wife.
When Harriet Bischoff resigned from OLS as
Office Manager she prayed long and hard
that I would find a good replacement. Her
prayers were answered with Pat Oden and
Diane have built up the PSR program to new
heights and want it to remain there so they
have prayed and worked for the right
replacement. That replacement is Elizabeth
Sutton. She and her husband, Ken, are
moving from Vermont to Birmingham on the
1st of January and she will shadow Sister
Joan and Diane to “learn the ropes.”
Elizabeth officially starts in May preparing for
the Vacation Bible School program.
A four-hour interview with Elizabeth left no
doubt in my mind that she was “ready for the
job.” Elizabeth has a masters degree in
theology from Steubenville, was on a
committee to start perpetual adoration in her
parish, and, as her husband says, “She is a
born teacher.”
Elizabeth and her husband are both converts
from the Episcopal Church and both are
accomplished musicians. Yes, Elizabeth has
played the violin with noted symphonies in
the states and in Europe and, no, I did not
hire her because I love and have played the
violin. (Maybe it helped a little. Just kidding!)
Her first love is catechetics. Around the first
of May she and I will be interviewing for an
administrative assistant to the DRE of the
PSR Program.
The Adult Education Program was taken over
by Mr. John Wright last year after Tricia Naro
gave it new life. John has pumped up this
program with the help of the recent noted
presenters so that with the publicity by
Frances Smith, and John’s entertaining and
challenging ways, we are having wonderful
attendance. However, family needs are
calling him away and the new director of
Adult Education is Tommy James, a personal
friend of mine for over 60 years since we
were at St. Bernard Minor Seminary together
in 1948. His career has been higher
education being the president of Benedictine
College for eight years.
Now we need that dream “Youth Minister.”
Pray that whoever he or she is we find that
person. Father Booth and Dawn McCarty are members are welcome. Any questions

COLUMBARIUM NEWS
We are close to our 100% goal for
reservations in our new OLS Columbarium
Gardens and Memorial Wall. There are only
(3) three days left to take advantage of the
$500.00 preconstruction discount being
offered for early reservations.
Consider that preplanning for our personal
funeral arrangements is important not only
for our own peace of mind but also our
families and friends, relieving them of the
responsibility of making these arrangements
for us. We are then assured that there is no
question about our desires and intentions for
this event in our lives.
The Catholic Church has accepted cremation
as an approved burial option for us as
Catholics. The biggest advantage for most of
us is that instead of being buried at some
distant location, we now have the option of
being interred right here on OLS Parish
grounds.
We can still choose to have a traditional
wake and funeral Mass. Visit the OLS
church office to discuss details and reserve
your niche space by this October 15th.

The OLS Singles would like to invite

the Declaration of Nullity, commonly know as
Annulments, to join us Thursday, October

the Family Life Center for Annulment
Education. This event is open to everyone to
learn more about the Declaration of Nullity. If
you are a divorced Catholic or know a
divorced Catholic who would be interested to

divorced Catholics and the annulment

JR. HIGH YOUTH GROUP meets the first

Cursillo School of Leaders Meets
The Cursillo Movement of the Birmingham
Diocese announces the October School of
Leaders will be held on Saturday, October
18, 2008, at Sacred Heart Family Life Center

annual art show. The show is free and will be

will host an “OLS NIGHT” on Tuesday,

Catholic Bible Study-The Steward of the office.
Mysteries of God Come and join us at Our
Lady of Sorrows where seven sessions will
be presented on St. Paul and the
sacraments. The sessions are based
primarily on the recent book by Father
Pacwa, St. Paul/The Steward of the
Mysteries of God. The sessions will begin
on Thursday night, October 16th, and end
on the night of December 4th. Prior to the
sessions we will have light refreshments.
Each session will begin at 6:30 and end at
8:00 p.m. Everyone is invited. For

BIBLE STUDY
All are welcome to attend the Bible study

TEACHERS NEEDED FOR GROWING

WITH GOD-We are looking for parishioners
who are interested in helping teach the 2-
year-old’s Growing with God class. Growing
with God is a Sunday school program that
engages 2- and 3- year-olds in a fun, hands-
on, catholic learning experience. The
commitment is only one Sunday a month
from 9:45-11:15 a.m. and the schedule
follows the PSR calendar. This is a great
way to get involved in the church and meet
other families in our parish. Please contact
