First News

Our CAF (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expand Vocabulary) strategy this week is:

LEAP FROG.
Using this strategy, we L-E-A-P over an unknown word and read on. This allows the reader to use the words around the unknown word to help figure it out. So encourage your child to practice this strategy at home when he/she comes to an unknown word.

Other strategies you should see your child trying when they come to an unknown word are: Use the pictures, CHUNK IT, Get your mouth ready for the beginning sound(s) and nowLEAP FROG!

Writing
This week we began writing about insects, their life cycles and what we have learned through our fascinating INSECT Science Unit. We continue to work on effectively using our Umbrella Planner to organize our thoughts in order to create a great piece of writing.

Reading
Daily 5 is up and running!! It is amazing to watch these 1st graders engaged in Read To Self, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading and Reading to Someone INDEPENDENTLY!!! We are so proud of the work they are doing! WAY TO GO!

Your child will be bringing this folder home Monday Thursday. It is very important that this folder is returned DAILY as we will be using the books that

Folders

are sent home in Guided Reading. The book your child brings home will be a book he/she has worked on in class and should be reviewing and working on fluent reading at home. Please be sure to sign the bright green sheet indicating that your child did read. This is also a great way to communicate with us about your childs reading at home. Please let us know if you have any questions!!

I Can Read Notebooks


Thank you for returning the V.I.P folders and I Can Read Notebooks! Just a reminder that they come home every Friday and are due on Monday. It is very important that the I Can Read Notebooks come back to school on Monday as we use these during our Read to Self time throughout the week.

Homework
OCTOBER HOMEWORK IS DUE NOVEMBER 2 !! We will be eating in the room on this day. If you have lost or misplaced the homework, please let us know and well get you a new one. You can also write a note that your child has read every night and has completed at least 10 activities throughout the month. This note is just as good as the original homework sheet, but must turned in on time! Thanks so much for your support!

Math
In Investigations we have continued to work with story problems by; reading the problem, visualizing, highlighting important information and solving the problem using numbers, words and pictures. We are also working on combinations of ten and knowing them quickly.

information would be to provide families with phone numbers and/or addresses in order to arrange playdates, address invitations, or contact other first grade parents regarding upcoming first grade CELEBRATIONS! If you would like your information included, please fill out the information sheet in your childs VIP Folder and return it by Wednesday, October 19th!
