Introduction
General
The MARTIN BULL DAWG Belt Cleaner is a dual-purpose cleaner. It can function as a pre-cleaner or a secondary cleaner. Traditionally, a precleaner is located on the discharge pulley and one or more secondary cleaners are located after the belt leaves the pulley. The MARTIN BULL DAWG can be located on the face of the pulley or after the tangent point. The MARTIN BULL DAWG Belt Cleaner Blades have independent suspension and are uniquely free to move in an infinite number of axes, including a linear axis of motion. The blades have aggressive (positive rake) peeling-angled tungsten carbide tips, which increase efficiency, while reducing the required cleaning pressure.
IMPORTANT
The MARTIN BULL DAWG Belt Cleaner with MARTIN SHOCK BLOK Shock Absorber can be used with mechanical fasteners, provided these are in good condition and installed using best practices, such as leading edges which are flush with the belt cover, and bolts and nuts which are ground flush with the plates. !
CAUTION
The MARTIN BULL DAWG Belt Cleaner assemblies with springs should NOT be used on belts with mechanical fasteners. They are intended to be used only on Vulcanized Belts. When used on belts with mechanical fasteners, damage may occur to both the belt and the cleaner assembly. The cleaner should NOT be used on a belt that contains gouges, holes, or other belt imperfections, as the cleaner may cause further damage to the belt.
These procedures were written for equipment that is being installed on enclosed pulley chute work. If the pulley is not enclosed, the equipment should be installed using the best available field resources and methods to ensure that the critical dimensions are followed for proper installation. The MARTIN Hanger Mount Assembly can be used for installations without chute work. See Part Numbers for a list of mounts and part numbers.

Introduction
Safety
All safety rules defined in the above documents and all owner/employer safety rules must be strictly followed when working on the belt cleaner. !
DANGER
Do not touch or go near the conveyor belt or conveyor accessories when the belt is running. Your body or clothing can get caught and you can be pulled into the conveyor, resulting in severe injury or death.
DANGER
Before installing, servicing, or adjusting the belt cleaner, turn off and lock out/tag out all energy sources to the conveyor and conveyor accessories according to ANSI standards. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death.
DANGER
If this equipment will be installed in an enclosed area, test the gas level or dust content before using a cutting torch or welding. Using a torch or welding in an area with gas or dust may cause an explosion resulting in serious injury or death.
WARNING
Before using a cutting torch or welding the chute wall, cover the conveyor belt with a fire retardant cover. Failure to do so can allow the belt to catch fire.
WARNING
Remove all tools from the installation area and conveyor belt before turning on the conveyor. Failure to do so can cause serious injury to personnel or damage to the belt and conveyor.
WARNING
Mainframe with blade can be heavy and may require two people to lift. Attempting to lift the belt cleaner without assistance could result in injury.
IMPORTANT
The delivery service is responsible for damage occurring in transit. Martin Engineering CANNOT enter claims for damages. Contact your transportation agent for more information. 1. Inspect shipping container for damage. Report damage to delivery service immediately and fill out delivery services claim form. Keep any damaged goods subject to examination. 2. Remove belt cleaner assembly from shipping container. 3. If anything is missing contact Martin Engineering or a representative. !
WARNING
Before installing equipment, turn off and lock out/ tag out all energy sources to the conveyor and conveyor accessories according to ANSI standards. Failure to do so could result in serious injury or death. 4. Turn off and lock out/tag out energy source according to ANSI standards (see References). !
DANGER
If this equipment will be installed in an enclosed area, test the gas level or dust content before using a cutting torch or welding. Using a torch or welding in an area with gas or dust may cause an explosion resulting in serious injury or death. 5. If using a cutting torch or welding, test atmosphere for gas level or dust content. Cover conveyor belt with fire retardant cover.
IMPORTANT
Center the belt cleaner blades to clean an area narrower than the conveyor belt width. This allows for side-to-side movement of the belt and prevents damage to the belt edge.
NOTE
The chute wall that the tensioner will be located on is referred to as the operator side. The other side of the chute is referred to as the far side. (If installing dual tensioners, side that is most accessible is operator side.) 6. Determine which side of chute is easiest to access. Locate the tensioner on the most accessible chute wall.
Before Installation
Installation
IMPORTANT
For belts with mechanical fasteners, Martin Engineering recommends mounting cleaner off the head pulley. Ensure the cleaner is placed within 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 mm) of head pulley or hold-down roll for most effective cleaning.

1. Determine whether belt cleaner will be mounted onto outside chute walls or inside chute walls.
NOTE
Martin Engineering recommends installing MARTIN BULL DAWG Cleaner outside the chute. 2. Determine where you want blades to contact belt and mark point on outside or inside chute wall, as applicable. Do not mount in path of material flow. Make sure belt is adequately supported at blade-to-belt contact point. Install belt support if necessary. 3. After choosing blade-to-belt contact point, mark point level with belt surface (Point A).
Installation
Installation
4. See Figure 3 and perform the following: a. If Point A is on head pulley, find head pulley center and mark line (Line A) from head pulley center through Point A and extend line minimum of 12 in. (300 mm) below Point A. If Point A is behind head pulley, mark line (Line A) through Point A and perpendicular (90) to the belt. Extend Line A 12 in. (300 mm) below Point A. b. Mark another line (Line B) 4 in. (100 mm) on the upstream side (towards the discharge) and parallel to Line A. Extend Line B at least 12 in. (300 mm) below the belt. Line B sets centerline of the jackscrew of the clamp assembly.
IMPORTANT
Line B must be on upstream side of Line A. Clamps and mainframe assembly must be on downstream side of threaded jackscrew. This is to avoid rotational overturning forces being applied to clamps and jackscrews. Clamps are designed to tilt mainframe 10 back when installed as described in these instructions. c. Draw Line C perpendicular (90) from Point A on Line A to a point on Line B. Line C is tangent to belt at Point A.

IMPORTANT
Clamp assemblies are pre-assembled for top mounting. The adjustable sliding clamps have two supporting posts angled at 10 from perpendicular. When clamp assemblies are bottommounted the sliding clamps must be removed from threaded jackscrews and turned over so supporting posts are angled towards pillow blocks. This will set the mainframe tilted back 10. Double jack nuts with spring lock washer between them must be replaced on jackscrew to lift sliding clamp and prevent cleaner from losing belt contact. 5. When mounting to outside of chute, it will be necessary to provide access windows for cleaner assembly to pass through. Window should be 6 in. wide by 12 in. high (150 mm by 300 mm), centered on Line A and extending below Line C. Mark two parallel lines 3 in. (75 mm) to each side of Line A. On these two lines, mark top corners of window approximately 3 in. (75 mm) below the marked hole locations (for top mount position). Mark bottom corners 12 in. (300 mm) below top corners. For bottom mount position, mark bottom corner of window approximately 3 in. (75 mm) above the marked hole locations. Mark top corners 12 in. (300 mm) above lower.

6. Repeat markings on opposite side of conveyor using reference measurements taken from first side to ensure accurate alignment.
1. Follow same instruction for mounting cleaner on outside of chute wall, except ensure clamp does not interfere with head pulley. Also, there is no need to cut an access window.
NOTE
When installing cleaner inside chute walls, mainframe tube must be cut at both ends. Measure from center of pulley to each chute wall. Mark each measurement, minus 1/2 in. (13 mm) for clearance, from center of mainframe, then cut off excess. Remove burrs and sharp edges.
Figure 7.
!
CAUTION
When mounting MARTIN BULL DAWG Belt Cleaner on inside chute walls, mainframe must be secured with safety cables. Without cables, belt cleaner could break loose and cause damage to conveyor. 2. Install MARTIN BULL DAWG Cable Kit (P/N 34883) or equivalent onto belt cleaner mainframe as follows: a. Drill 1/2-in. (13-mm) hole (A) 3/4 in. (19 mm) from each end of mainframe blade cavity plate. b. Weld D-rings (C) onto chutework parallel to Clamp Mounts. c. Install shackles (D) through holes in ends of mainframe. d. Lift mainframe into position inside chute and insert into clamps.

!
CAUTION
Make sure safety cables are out of material flow and away from machinery. Cables could become entangled and cause damage to equipment. e. Loop 1/4-in. wire cable (E) through each shackle and D-ring on chute walls. Take up slack so cables are taut. f. Apply thread-sealing compound to nuts on cable clamps (F). Install eight cable clamps (two on each cable end) to secure cables to belt cleaner mainframe and D-rings. Torque nuts on cable clamps between 15 and 30 ft-lb (2 to 4 kgm). g. Trim loose ends of wire cables. 3. Secure mainframe and tighten bolts.
1. Bolt each clamp assembly in place with two hex head cap screws, flat washers, compression washers and hex nuts, with threaded jackscrew aligned directly over Line B. Slotted holes in pillow blocks will allow 5 rotation in each direction to enable proper alignment. 2. Install cleaner assembly in the clamps which must be on downstream side of jackscrew and with scraping tips of blades facing toward discharge. Center blades on belt. 3. Swing clamp gates up behind mainframe tube and hold in place with bolts and spring lock washers. Tighten bolt on one side only, leaving other side snug, but not tight. Tighten second bolt after tensioning is completed.
10
IMPORTANT
Follow these steps carefully to ensure proper tensioning.
1. Turn the single, upper jack nut towards belt to allow room to adjust cleaner height. 2. Raise mainframe by hand, working evenly on both sides, to avoid binding. Support slide clamp at each lifting stage with the upper of double jack nuts. Do this until blades are approximately 1/8 in. (3 mm) from belt all the way across. 3. Lift one side by hand until you feel it lightly contact belt. Support this position with jack nut. Repeat this on other side. Blades should now be in even, light contact with belt, across full width. 4. Raise jack nuts on each side by two full turns towards belt. Cleaner is now correctly tensioned for normal conditions. If belt is worn hollow and some blades are not making contact or if uneven cleaning is observed during test run, one additional turn can be applied. This extra turn should not be applied with belts traveling faster than 500 fpm (2.5 m/s) with mechanical fasteners. 5. Lock down upper jack nut on both sides. 6. Tighten bottom jack nut on both sides. 7. Tighten bolt on clamp gate. 8. Check that all fasteners are now fully tight. !
WARNING
Threaded parts of clamp assembly may have been coated with anti-seize compound, which may be harmful through skin contact or ingestion. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling these components.
1. Install and tension MARTIN BULL DAWG Belt Cleaner. 2. Push cover door onto MARTIN BULL DAWG Mainframe so bushing fits around square tubing. 3. Slide door against chute wall, covering cutout. 4. Secure door in place with hex head cap screw.
11
Installation
After Installation
1. Thoroughly wipe chute wall clean above tensioner. 2. Place Conveyor Products Warning Label (P/N 23395) on outside chute wall visible to belt cleaner operator. !
