I never thought I would live to see the day when we would not count all the votes in an election and look to all the world like a third-world country. The Conservatives did it. They stole the 2000 presidential election from Al Gore and gave it to George W. Bush. Al Gore received the most popular votes in the entire country, and he may have had the most votes in Florida, if the conservatives had not used roadblocks and technicalities to stop all the votes from being counted. Who had the most votes in Florida is not the point. The point is that conversatives stopped the counting of votes they did not want to be counted. This was unamerican. I knew that Conservatives would do anything to win, but I still cannot believe that they got away with not counting the ballots that the machines could not count. If a machine cannot count a ballot, then a human being must look at the ballot with human eyes and try to determine for whom the voter cast their vote. This was a basic principle of the United States of America until this election. Many elections across this country have been decided by hand counting ballots. This is the rst time I remember an election being decided by not counting the ballots. Florida law allows for manual recounts. Lawyers for Al Gore asked for manual recounts. Lawyers for George W. Bush fought to stop the manual recounts. Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris, a Republican who was

George W. Bushs honorary co-chairman of his Florida presidential campaign, refused to accept all the hand counts. There were time limits on how long counties had to count the votes by hand. All the votes could not be counted in time, and Miami-Dade County canceled its hand recount after a mob of Republicans chanted and pounded on the windows where the recount was taking place. Joe Geller, a Democratic lawyer and chair of the local party, received a sample ballot from the elections ofce and was surrounded by the Republican mob who thought he had taken an actual ballot. Geller had to have the police escort him to safety. The Florida State Supreme Court tried to get all the votes counted more than once. Bushs lawyers tried to stop the recounts in federal court. That did not work until they went to the United States Supreme Court. Remember when Conservatives used to say that state rights were so important? State rights take a back seat in a hurry when they go against what Conservatives want. Republican attorneys got the Florida courts to send about 650,000 Miami-Dade County ballots and about 400,000 Palm Beach County ballots to a Tallahassee court. Then, they demanded another one million ballots from several counties be sent to Tallahassee. Now you know how to use delaying tactics to run out the clock on your opponent. Use lots of attorneys and bring lots of lawsuits. In December, 2000 John Ahmam, a Bush Team witness and a designer of punch-card machines testied that the machines could be unreliable, which would necessitate hand counts of ballots. In Palm Beach County, a Democratic county, the buttery ballot confused many voters. There were names on each side of the ballot with holes in the center. Pat Buchanan, a Conservative, was the rst candidate on the right side and had the second hole in the center as his. Al Gore was the second candidate on the left side and had the third

hole as his. Voters who punched the second hole, thinking they were voting for Al Gore, actually voted for Buchanan. Pat Buchanan received thousands of votes in a county where he should have received very few. Even Buchanan himself said that the votes should have gone to Gore and not him. The Florida State House voted to name Republican electors to the Electoral College and the Florida State Senate was ready to do the same thing, if George W. Bush had lost in the courts. They were prepared to ignore the voters in Florida. They were willing to do anything to make sure Bush became president, even if it meant telling the Democratic voters their votes did not count. Americans need to eliminate the Electoral College. Al Gore had the most popular votes and still lost the election, the rst time that has happened since 1888. We elect the U.S. Congress, state legislatures, some judges, etc., by popular vote. We can do the same for president and vice president. But do you think Conservatives will allow the elimination of the Electoral College? The U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to stop the recounts, in effect, because the recount could not be conducted in compliance with the requirements of equal protection and due process without substantial additional work. They wanted one statewide standard with judicial review, and they gave Florida no time to do it. The Supreme Court gave Florida about two hours to implement the order. In December, 2000 Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens said, One thing is certain though. Although we may never know with complete certainty the identity of the winner of this years presidential election, the identity of the loser is perfectly clear. It is the nations condence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law. In December 2000, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote, The extraordinary setting of this case has

obscured the ordinary principle that dictates its proper resolution. Federal courts defer to state high courts interpretations of their states own law. So, you have a convervative U.S. Supreme Court that believes in state rights telling the Florida State Supreme Court it has no rights. Conservatives will do anything and sacrice anything, even U.S. Supreme Court justices to get what they want. Just wait until something they do not like comes before the U.S. Supreme Court. Conservatives will start screaming about state rights and that federal courts should not be involved. They will forget about what they did to Gore and pretend it never happened. In Seminole County, Florida Republicans were allowed to work out of the county supervisor of elections, Sandy Goards ofce, to add voter identication numbers to absentee-ballot requests. The ballots had previously been rejected as invalid and set aside. Republicans corrected about 2,000 ballots. Republicans worked in the ofce for about 15 days. A Democratic representative should have been there. There was a lawsuit to toss these ballots out, but the courts said that the ballots should be counted. That is ne with me; ballots should be counted. All ballots should have been counted. Can you imagine what would have happened if Democrats had done what the Republicans did? The Republicans would have rioted. It was okay for the Republicans to take about 15 days to correct ballot requests, but it was wrong to count undervotes or overvotes in Florida. The Republicans wanted it both ways, and they got it. One of the arguments used by the Republicans to stop the manual recounts of ballots was that hand recounts could not be accurate or fair and were open to human error. If machines could not nd voter intent, humans should not be allowed to look at the ballots and determine voter intent. The argument did not work in the Florida Supreme Court

who ordered manual recounts. However, it did work in the U.S. Supreme Court. Yet, ballots were not only counted by humans, some were actually duplicated. About 10,000 torn or unreadable absentee ballots were duplicated by election ofcials and then counted. As we know, most absentee ballots were cast for Bush. Bush won Florida by about 500 votes. Republicns did not complain about humans duplicating and counting those ballots that favored Bush. The Florida Supreme Court was right when they ordered hand recounts. The time limits that were used in Florida were unreasonable. The time limits used by Katherine Harris to stop the recounts made no sense, unless you are a Republican and wanted George W. Bush to win. There was no reason not to take the time necessary to count all the votes. When time limit laws were created, did hole punch cards exists? How many people then lived in Florida? Sometimes, laws become obsolete and need to be changed. Sometimes, state courts use their power to correct bad laws. You could have easily in a short period of time looked at all the undervotes (ballots that did not register on a machine) and all the overvotes (ballots where Al Gore was chosen and the voter also wrote in Gores name or Joe Liebermans name, and where George Bush was chosen and the voter wrote in Bushs name or Dick Cheneys name in error) in every county. You could have easily determined the voters intention and counted the votes, correctly. If the voters intention was not clear, then you would not count that vote. This is not rocket science, people! Republicans said they did not like the way the recounts were being conducted. Did you notice, however, that they did not offer any solutions? Here are some solutions: 1. Bring in the G.A.O. (Government Accounting Ofce) to assist with the recounts. 2. Bring in the F.B.I. to help.

3. Bring in federal marshals to help. 4. Bring in the Canadians to help. They know how to count votes. They counted their entire country (more than double the number of voters in Florida) in a matter of hours with no trouble at all. 5. Issue paper ballots and have every voter who voted on Election Day (we know who they were, they signed in when they voted) return to their voting ofce, re-sign their names and re-vote. Everyone who voted for Gore would vote for him, and everyone who voted for Bush would vote for him, and we would have found out who really voted for Buchanan. They should have done whatever was necessary to count every possible vote. Every vote, in every county should have been counted. That includes counting absentee ballots that were received by a certain day, not whether they had a postmark or not. What was the hurry? The U.S. congressional race in Michigan, won by Democratic Dianne Byrum, was not decided until December 15, 2000. The Republicans did not mind taking weeks to recount those votes. Amazing, isnt it? Conservatives do not like solutions. They do not want to resolve issues or problems. They just want everything their way and are willing to do anything to get it. They do not care who they hurt, even if it is the country they live in. How do you tell voters now that every vote counts? Do you tell them, every vote counts if Conservatives allow it to be counted! Do you tell them, do not bother voting in the next presidential election because the Republicans and the U.S. Supreme Court have already appointed George W. Bush as king of America? To show you how nasty Conservatives are, this is what Florida Republican House Speaker Tom Feeney said when Al Gore was giving his concession speech, which almost

everyone said was a terric speech: What a loser! and that the concession was an evil speech. I think we all know who is evil here, and it is not Al Gore. Its the Perfect Evil that is never wrong. Conservatives just hate it when they get caught being their normal evil selves. Newspapers are using Florida law to get access to the ballots and do their own count of the undervotes and overvotes. The Republicans really hate that and would stop the press if they could. There is no good reason why the votes should not be counted. It will not change the outcome of the election. We would just nd out the truth. The truth is not who had the most votes, the truth is counting all the votes. But Conservatives hate it when newspapers tell the truth and expose them as frauds for not counting all the votes. Conservatives will take away some of your rights if you do not ght for them. It always amazes me that people complain about what Conservatives do to them, after they decided not to vote. If you did not vote, do not complain. You allowed the Conservatives to take power, and they will use that power to do whatever they want to do. If you voted for Ralph Nader, then do not complain about what Bush does to the environment. You put Bush in ofce, and if he gives business the green light to do whatever it wants, then you have no one to blame but yourselves. Do not be surprised if the only green Bush cares about is money. No army in the world could force us to stop counting the votes. No country in the world could demand that we not count all the votes. Only Conservatives could do such a un-American act. It is like an act of treason has been committed, and we are powerless to stop it. It feels like our Constitution has been violated and the American people have been betrayed. In the future, ballots must be easy to understand, easy to complete, and include detailed instructions. It should be

illegal to use ballots or methods that mislead voters, especially the elderly and people who have trouble understanding English. Assistance must available at all voting ofces, and people must be encouraged to ask for help. No voter should ever leave a voting ofce without knowing if their vote will be counted. If machines are used, there must be a test machine in place to check each ballot to see if the ballot will be counted. If there is a problem, the voter must be notied and given a new ballot to complete. Then, the ballot must be tested again. This process must continue until the ballot is accepted. Would this take more time? Yes, it would, but there is no reason we should not take the time to make sure every vote is counted in America. I know Conservatives love to say that if you are not smart enough to vote correctly, then that is just too bad. Your vote does not count, and they do not want to spend any money to x the many problems with our many voting systems. They have told me this more than once. Not every one is perfect like Conservatives are, however. Many of us are just normal human beings with faults and deciencies. In fact, I, for one, have never been perfect since I stopped being a Conservative! Conservatives make sure that minorities get an inferior education, then say it is their fault that they did not have an decent education. They should have moved out to the suburbs with the Conservatives. The Conservatives argument that taking the time to count all the votes would cause a Constitutional crisis is ridiculous. We should allow whatever time it takes to count every vote. Roadblocks used by Conservatives to stop counting the votes should be illegal and unconstitutional. Also, we do not need instant results reported on television, especially when they are only guessing who won. This causes some voters not to vote because the T.V. already predicted one of the candidates was going to win. Voters do not bother to vote because they think the election is over. Television reporters must not be allowed to report results

on any election until all the polling ofces have closed. That means if there is more than one time zone in a state, there should be no reporting until all the polling ofces in the entire state are closed. It also means that there should be no reporting on a presidential election until all polling ofces in the country are closed. You do not think that will be feasible? Just change the time polling ofces close around the country. Stagger the closing times. If you cannot understand how, ask a Canadian to explain it to you. Elections are supposed to be for the people, not for television. We need accurate results, not instant results, even if we have to wait until the next day to nd out who won the election. No one is going to die if we have to wait one day for results, or if we have to wait one month for a recount. Accuracy before speed, and count every vote. Campaign ads often lie about opponents or twist the truth to extremes. When they do not lie, they often just do not tell the truth. It is imperative that every state have a bipartisan Campaign Commission with the authority to review ads and point out lies and distortions. Television and newspapers should always report what the commission nds. States should provide adequate funds for the commission. Being able to inform the public of the truth would well be worth the small cost. Do you think Conservatives would ever allow such a commission to expose the truth? Now that George W. Bush is president, many say we must unite behind him. It is true that in times of war we normally unite behind the president (Vietnam was an exception,) but in times of peace we unite behind our president based upon what he or she does. We should give him a chance to unite the country by doing what is best for the people and the country. If he does not do what is best for Americans, we must point out what he is doing to hurt the country. What I am trying to show you in this book is that Conservatives do things that are not good for the country, or for you, or for your children. Not only can they stop

votes from being counted, they can do many other harmful, even evil things. They can take away your freedom and our democracy piece by piece, one little step at a time. Did Bush appoint mostly Conservatives to his administration? There is no real diversity if most of our administration is Conservative, no matter what their race. Will he push through a Conservative agenda and leave many Americans behind? Will he give most of the tax breaks to the rich? Will he do what is best for the people, or what the National Rie Association tells him to do? Will he try to make some or all abortions illegal, which will make women secondclass citizens and cause the deaths of some? Will he do anything to control overpopulation, or will he pretend there is no problem? Will he hurt the environment and let business do what it wants to do? Will he endorse the Christian religion and Christian prayer as the approved state religion? Will he understand that if all he does is attack the supply of drugs, he will lose the war on drugs? Will he take money from poor schools that need it and give the money to rich schools? Will he pay down the national debt, or increase it, leaving it to our children to try and pay it off and causing higher interest rates? Will he try to control campaign funding or just try to collect more money for his next campaign? Will he spend billions to build a national missile defense that cannot work, is useless and counterproductive? Will he send his Conservative troops after the RU-486 abortion pill and try to recverse the RDAs approval? As you can see, a lot depends on what George W. Bush does with the issues facing this country. Even what he says is important. One of the rst choices he had to make after being elected was whether to do what was best for the country, or play politics and do what was best for him and the Republicans. There were indications of an economic slowdown. Bush should have said that the economy will continue to grow and that everything will be all right. That would help keep consumer condence up. People would

continue to buy, and that would help prevent a recession. But, instead, he chose to predict a bleak economic future. By saying that, he positioned himself to blame Clinton for any recession and got his big tax cut to give more money to the rich. Just by talking about an economic downturn, Bush could hurt consumer condence and cause people to spend less, thereby causing a recession by predicting it. Because Bush gave too much of a tax break to the rich, the middle class will have less to spend and we may see the decit start going up again. This is typical of what conservatives doput themselves ahead of the country. The middle class are always the ones that have to pay for the actions of the Conservatives. We will be watching to see what Bush actually does, and who benets from his policies and who is hurt by his actions. You should always watch closely what Conservatives do and how they affect your life. If you do not keep yourself informed and understand exactly how Conservatives can make something sound good when it is actually bad, you will be controlled by a Perfect Evil that can take away your freedoms and hurt you and your children in ways that are concealed completely from you.
2 GUNS
The one thing that Conservatives do not want you to know is that there are no effective gun laws in the United States. Because there are loopholes and different laws in different areas, anyone can easily get a gun. You just have to go to the point of least resistance. There are cities that have strict gun control laws, but are surrounded by gun stores just outside the city limits where the laws are not as strict. If one county has strict laws, you simply go to a different county. If one state has strict laws, you just go to a different state. If a criminal cannot buy guns, he has someone else buy guns for him. That person is called a straw purchaser. A criminal can go to gun shows, ea markets, pawn shops, newspapers, magazines, private sales, the internet and small gun dealers who sell guns from their houses or cars to avoid strict gun laws. There are more loopholes than you can believe! Ali Abu Kamal, a Palestinian, in February 1997 ew to Florida, gave the address of a motel room he just moved into as his residence, and waited three days after applying to purchase a gun. He passed a background check (How could he have a U.S. criminal record?He was a foreigner!) and was able to buy a handgun, go to the Empire State Building observation deck, kill and wound people, and then kill himself. Laws have been passed to ban assault ries, semiautomatic assault pistols, armor piercing bullets, large ammunition clips, etc. There are grandfather clauses, however,

that allow any weapons that existed before those laws to continue to be sold! Only new weapons are banned, so you can still buy almost any weapon you want, and easily! The police, who complain about facing criminals with better weapons than they have, sell or trade used handguns, shotguns, assaults ries and, believe it or not, grenade launchers to gun dealers. Some of these guns are used to commit crimes. You can legally purchase .50-caliber ries that can penetrate a tanks armor. Instant background checks work some of the time, but not always. Small towns do not have the resources to keep data up to date on criminals, and sometimes the information does not come back to the gun seller fast enough to stop the sale. These problems must be solved before we can rely on instant checks to stop unqualied people from purchasing guns. The National Rie Association (NRA) says all we have to do is enforce the laws we currently have, but there are so many loopholes that there is no chance the current laws will keep guns out of the hands of criminals, children, the mentally ill, etc. The NRA in a 1995 fund-raising letter, described federal law enforcement agents as Nazis and jack-booted government thugs seeking to harass, intimidate, even murder law-abiding citizens. Attacking federal law enforcement agents to raise money is an evil thing to do. How can Conservatives continue to ght against reasonable new gun laws? Here is a partial list of the consequences when children kill with guns that were too easy for them to get: 1. Feb. 19, 1997: Bethel, Alaska, high schoolOne child & principal dead. 2. Oct. 1, 1997: Pearl High School in Pearl, Miss.Two children dead.

3. Dec. 1, 1997: Heath High School in West Paducah, Ky.Three children dead. 4. March 24, 1998: Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Ark.Four children & a teacher dead. 5. April 24, 1998: James W. When I was young, children, including me, had ghts over nothing (though it seemed important at the time) that usually wound up as wrestling matches. Later, we often were friends with each other. Now, children cannot be friends later on because one or the other is shot to death. It is too easy for kids to get guns. Everyone knows it, but Conservatives will not allow real solutions. Conservatives think they are always right, that they are perfect. They are perfectPERFECT EVIL. Besides closing all the loopholes in present gun laws, all guns should have safety child-proof trigger locks or safe storage devices. If you buy a gun anywhere, from anyone, there must be a background check. No one under age 21 should be able to buy a gun. Get rid of the old (grandfathered) illegal guns and ammunition clips. Require a photo license (like a drivers license) for anyone who buys a gun. Promote smart gun technology permitting weapons to

be red only by their owners. Require mandatory security systems at all gun stores. Applicants must have gun training before they can buy a gun. Conservatives say that if you license gun owners, that will lead to the government eventually taking away all the guns. No way. I had a Pistol License, a Black Powder License and an Air/Gas Pistol License. I was never denied any reasonable gun, and nobody ever tried to take any of them away from me! Conservatives talk about the right to carry a gun. They will tell you about the history of guns in America. What they do not want you to know is that in the old west in the 1800s many towns banned guns within the city limits. Within these limits only authorized police could carry guns. The wild west gured out how to reduce gun deathsmake it less wild! Conservatives like to point out that some killers use knives, hammers, etc., to kill. Then, they ask if all knives, hammers, etc., should be banned. This is not a proper analogy. Handguns are created to do just one thingkill people. They are not a hunting weapon of choice. Yes, they are used for target shooting, but their real purpose is to kill people. Gun manufacturers advertise that their guns are better, more powerful, re more bullets, re faster, etc. Guns are inherently evil, and evil must be controlled. Cars can be deadly weapons, which is why we have so many rules and controls for cars and drivers. You will love this one: after the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., instead of passing gun control laws, House Conservatives in Washington, D.C., voted to allow the posting of the Ten Commandments at schools and other public buildings. Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., said the Ten Commandments posting could have prevented the massacre in Littleton. Conservatives will say anything to deect people from thinking about the real issues. By the way, which version

of the Ten Commandments is everyone supposed to use? There are various versions. Who decides which version to use? There are other religions and teachers that people follow in the U.S. Should we post, also, the writings of Buddha, Confucius, etc., next to the Ten Commandments? In 1998 some cities decided to sue gun manufacturers. In New York a federal jury held several gun makers liable and awarded $500,000 to Steven Fox and his mother. An economist testied during the trial that a large percentage of the handguns used in crimes in New York City came from Southern states. As I stated before, strict gun laws, like those in New York City, are useless when criminals can just go somewhere else and get guns. The gun manufacturers are trying to use the same defense that the tobacco companies tried to usethey are not responsible for what their customers do. However, if a company does nothing to make its product safe, is negligent or promotes illegal acts, then it is responsible. Conservative state legislatures, supported by the NRA, are passing bills to stop local governments from suing gun manufacturers for the illegal use of their products. Texas Gov. George W. Bush, in 1999, signed a bill that bars local governments from suing gun manufacturers to recover damages from gun violence. Other states have passed similar laws. What happened to Conservatives complaining about big government interfering with the rights of the people? I guess when it comes to campaign contributions from the NRA, dollars override rights. In March, 2000 Gunmaker Smith & Wesson agreed to install locks on its weapons. In exchange, governments (state, local and the Clinton administration) would drop lawsuits asking damages for gun violence.

Smith & Wesson will also develop smart gun technology that limits a guns use to its owner. The NRAs president, who is also an actor, Charlton Heston, said the British owners of Smith & Wesson do not place the same value on the Second Amendments right to bear arms Americans do. Maybe the British have a better understanding of a childs right to not be shot by a gun. In April, 2000 Massachusetts used consumer-protection rules to ban cheap guns, require childproof locks on guns, safety warnings with each gun, tamper-resistant serial numbers on guns, and indicators on semiautomatic handguns that reveal whether a bullet is in the chamber. The Attorney General wrote the rules, bypassing the Legislature. I wonder if Mr. Heston thinks Massachusetts is a foreign country? Did you notice that when white kids started to get shot instead of inner-city non-white kids, that more people got interested in gun control? Moms are now getting together, like they did with drunk diving (MADDMothers Against Drunk Driving), to work for gun control. The NRA and the Conservative politicians better watch out, you dont want to make those Moms mad, they Vote! On May 14, 2000, there was a Million Mom March. There was a turnout of about 750,000 people in Washington, D.C., urging Congress to pass reasonable gun control. A Conservative politicians number one priority is the people who give them money. The money provides access to the politician. On rare occasions, they also have to pay attention to voters or they might not get reelected no matter how much money they collected. Women must vote the Conservatives out of ofce before politicians will take them seriously. Why would women ever vote for Conservatives? Conservatives allow children and criminals easy access to guns. Isnt the body count high enough yet?

But, of course, guns dont kill children; children kill children. Guns dont kill relatives; relatives kill relatives. Guns dont kill neighbors; neighbors kill neighbors. The fact is we all know guns in the wrong hands denitely kill! Real gun control will require real gun laws, laws that will make many people angry. Politicians will do what the NRA dollars and NRA voters say to do, until they believe enough voters are mad enough about the lack of gun control to actually vote them out of ofce. Too many politicians are elected by too few people. If you want change, do something about it!
3 ABORTION
Does a woman have the right to decide what to do with her own body? Yes, she does. Should women make medical decisions with advice from their doctors? Yes, doctors are qualied to give medical advice, and women can make their own decisions. Should politicians and Conservatives make medical and life decisions for women? No way! Conservatives say it is wrong to take the life of an unborn child. Until a fetus is born, it is part of the womans body. When does a fetus become a child? When it leaves the womans body and can sustain life on its own? When it can leave the womans body and medical equipment can keep it alive for a while? When it can leave the womans body and medical science can keep it alive for a long time? You can argue these ideas forever. When Conservatives say it is wrong to kill, they have a very twisted idea about killing. They say that abortion is killing, but if they kill someone they dont like, then that killing is justied. In 1993 Dr. David Gunn was shot to death by Michael Grifn, an abortion foe, at the Pensacola Womens Medical Services clinic in Pensacola, Florida. It wasnt hard for Grifn to chase down Dr. Gunn and shoot him three times, because Dr. Gunn wore leg braces due to childhood polio. Paul Hill killed a clinic escort in Wichita, Kansas. John C. Salvi III killed two young receptionists and shot ve other people at two different clinics in Brookline, Massachusetts. employee, an off-duty police ofcer and critically wounding a clinic counselor, in January, 1998. A sniper shot through the kitchen window of Dr. Barnett Slepians house and killed him in Amherst, N.Y., in October 1998. Pro-life people say it is not their fault that these individuals kill. But, the pro-life rhetoric calling abortion murder and clinic protesters encourage violence. On a Web page dripping with electronic blood that lists Alleged Abortionists and Their Accomplices, someone drew a line through Barnett Slepians name. You know something like that is going to send a message to conservatives that it is acceptable to kill. Abortion opponents have always been against Planned Parenthood. They focus only on abortion and ignore everything else that Planned Parenthood does. Planned Parenthood provides family planning, birth control advice, general womens health care services, gynecological exams, prenatal care, cancer screenings, pregnancy tests, rape crisis counseling, programs for pregnant teens, abortion advice, etc. To be against Planned Parenthood is to be against women and families. Why do women vote for men or Conservatives? In 1999 Florida Gov. Jeb Bush signed a law creating a Choose Life license plate, which was backed by a variety of Conservative groups. This is the government fanning the ames of hate and violence. Then, when something violent happens, the government says what a terrible thing it is and that they are sorry it happened. A Conservative government does not solve problems; it helps create them. The Intact Dilation and Evacuation, or Partial Birth Abortion as the pro-life supporters like to call it, is an example of the government trying to outlaw a medical procedure. This late-term abortion is rarely done and is usually performed to protect the life and health of the mother or because the fetus has fatal abnormalities.

We all know what Conservatives think about women: men are the boss and women must follow. This medical procedure should be a decision made by the woman and her doctor, not politicians, especially male Conservative politicians. Maybe someday, women will wakeup and there will be a big reduction in Conservative politicians. The parental consent laws sound good, but are dangerous to the life of young females. Of course, the life of any female is not rated very highly by Conservative males, and if she is young and cannot vote, that moves her even farther down the scale. If a young girl knows that she cannot get a legal abortion unless she tells her parents, she may try to get an illegal abortion, which could kill her. That is what happened to Rebecca (Becky) Bell in 1988. Her parents were sure that Becky would come to them about her pregnancy. But, she did not. She got an illegal abortion and died. The law killed her. What happened to Conservatives protecting the privacy rights of individuals? Maybe, privacy rights only apply to men, not women, and especially not young women. Can you imagine a girl who has been raped by her father or stepfather and becomes pregnant having to get his permission for an abortion? What if the father of the baby is a friend or relative of one of the parents and wants the girl to have his baby? The parents might think it is a good idea to force the child to have the baby, but the child does not. Does that not create a possibility for suicide? If you dont think this sort of scenario hasnt happened already, you are hiding from reality. Every girl does not live in a perfect family. Many teenage girls do not have a good relationship with their parents. Conservatives are trying to force this with disastrous results. Conservatives are always right, and they are always perfectPERFECT EVIL. Congressional Conservatives have tried to make it illegal to transport a girl under 18 across state lines to have an

abortion. It would be a federal crime that could put brothers, sisters, grandparents, friends, ministers, etc., in jail for helping a girl. If it ever gets through the legislature, it will costs the lives of some girls due to illegal abortions or suicide. If we ever get a Conservative president and a Conservative Congress, womens abortion rights will be eroded. In December, 1988 Nancy Klein was in a car accident that left her in a coma, and she was pregnant. Her husband, Martin Klein, and doctors decided it was best for Nancys recovery and health to have an abortion. Two anti-abortionists led a case against having the abortion and took the case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Martin Klein said the two activists who tried to stop the abortion put us through a living hell. Martin won the case. Nancy had the abortion in February 1989 and began to emerge from the coma two weeks later. There was a movie made about this titled Absolute Strangers. If pro-life people get their way, women like Nancy will have to have the child and risk death. Of course, in the eyes of Conservatives, she is just a female while the child might be a male. Have you noticed that the same people who are against abortion are also against birth control or the teaching of safe sex? Remember the Just Say No Nancy Reagan campaign that preached abstinence only. It totally ignored the reality that some children are going to get pregnant no matter what you say to them. Not all children live in perfect homes. Abstinence is a good plan A, what is the Convervatives Plan B when plan A fails? Birth control and education are absolutely necessary if you want to reduce abortions. It is as if the pro-life people do not want any solutions that could reduce their own importance by reducing the need for abortions It is crazy that in the U.S. girls feel they have no one to turn to when they are giving birth, and then proceed to kill or dump their child. The pro-life people have created

a climate of hate that has scared girls into keeping their pregnancies secret. Then, when the baby gets killed or dumped, no one can understand why it has happened and they demand that the mother be punished! We cannot punish the people who created the climate of fear, so lets go after the bad mother. After all, she is just a female. Some Conservatives call for the mother to receive the death penalty. In their minds, it is wrong for the mother to kill, but it is Okay to kill the mother. Conservatives are not known for their compassion, understanding or tolerance. Remember, they tell children that Planned Parenthood and other organizations like it are bad places to go for help. Pro-life Conservatives have been ghting against the use of the French abortion RU-486 pill since 1988. RU486 terminates an early pregnancy without surgery. Pro-life people are afraid of this pill because you dont have to go to a clinic to abort the fetus. You can go to any doctor authorized to use the drug, anywhere. In September, 1996, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said the pill was safe and effective when the treatment is supervised by a doctor. They expected the drug to be in doctors ofces by mid to late 1997. As of June, 2000, RU-486 had been distributed to 20 countries. The FDA kept adding new restrictions to keep the pill out of the privacy of doctors ofces. Men had no problem getting Viagra approved. Finally, on September 28, 2000, the FDA approved the use, by doctors, of RU-486. There is a morning-after drug contraceptive that received marketing approval from the FDA in 1999, which prevents pregnancy from unprotected sex. A kit containing the pills is sold under the name PREVEN. PREVEN will not terminate an existing pregnancy. You would think that this is a kit every woman would want in her medicine cabinet in case of rape or unprotected sex, but Wal-Mart has taken this choice away from women.

Wal-Mart refuses to sell Preven. Will other types of birth control be banned next? Pro-life people do not want any solutions that could hurt their cause. If women only got pregnant when they wanted to, there would be fewer abortions. Conservatives dont want women to have a choice; men should decide for them. Conservative males make laws about abortion, yet they never have to worry about having to follow their own laws. If they make abortion more restrictive or illegal and make it difcult for women to get birth control, they dont have to worry about having an illegal abortion, death, or suicide, because they can never get pregnant. There are no penalties for the males! Then, when unwanted children are born, the Conservatives can complain about welfare, child abuse, foster care costs, orphanages, teenage crime, child care costs, absent fathers, etc. Conservatives just love to create the problems and then complain about them. Lets hope that we never have a Conservative president who appoints more Conservative Supreme Court justices who would make abortion illegal again.
4 DEATH PENALTY
Many people argue about whether the death penalty is a good or bad idea. They argue about what it accomplishes. One thing it does accomplish for sure: it teaches our children that it is okay to kill. This is a very clear message that is not lost on our children. We tell our children that it is wrong for them to murder, but it is okay for the State to murder someone. When a soldier from another country who is trying to destroy our country is captured, we do not execute him. That would be barbaric, even if we knew they killed some of our people. But when we capture criminals and we are somewhat sure they committed a crime, we execute them. Conservatives who are pro-life when it comes to abortion are pro-death when it comes to the death penalty. Conservatives demand that the unwanted child must be born. Then, when the child commits a crime, they demand jail, even at a young age. Finally, when the child kills someone, they demand the death penalty. Conservatives complain about the child all through its life. To them, these children are bad people, while the Conservatives are good people. Conservatives are perfect peoplePERFECT EVIL. Conservatives say the death penalty is a deterrent to criminals. Lets investigate that idea. Texas is at or near the top in executions every year. Following Conservative logic, therefore, Texas must have one of the lowest murder rates in the U.S. But guess what state is at or near the top when it comes to murders each year? If you guessed Texas, you are correct. Do you really believe that murderers think

things through before they kill. Usually, they are very angry at someone, crazy, or desperate for drugs or money. They do not think before they act. The emotion of the moment is what drives them to kill. If they were capable of a rational thought at the time of the act and actually made a rational decision, a sentence of life without the possibility of parole would work as a deterrent just as well as the death penalty. Conservatives say that when you execute someone, that person cannot commit another murder. This is true, but life without parole accomplishes the same thing without teaching children that it is okay to solve a problem by killing. Conservatives say it is expensive to keep a killer in jail for life. This is true, but it also is very expensive to pay for death penalty trials, lawyers, appeals, etc., plus the moral price our entire society pays when we condone the states use of the ultimate violence against another human being. Conservatives want the state to be violent, then, when children use violence, Conservatives wonder why they are so violent. The death penalty is a poor persons penalty. Do you know of any rich people who have been sentenced to death? Rich people can buy their way out of the death penalty. Poor people do not have the resources to avoid the death penalty, and the state will not give them enough resources to properly defend themselves, even in a life or death situation. One thing the death penalty does accomplish is revenge. Many people feel better when someone is executed for a heinous crime. The fact that they may be executing an innocent person is irrelevant. A horrible crime has been committed and someone must die for it! The problem with revenge is that it does not bring back to life the person who was murdered, and after the supposed killer is executed, the relatives and friends of the crime victim may not feel as good as thought they were going to feel. I read about or hear about on television that make my blood boil. I want to kill the murderers with my bare hands! Then, I calm down and realize that I cannot do that because if it is wrong for them to kill, it is wrong for me to kill. It is uncivilized to kill. I must be civilized, even though the murders are not civilized. I must help teach our children to be civilized. There is a group, Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation, that embraces forgiveness and is against capital punishment, even though most members have had a loved one murdered. The U.S. is one of a few countries that executes juveniles (children under age 18) and is the only Western nation to do so. We talk about human rights and we demand that other countries, like China, improve their human rights. Yet, we continue to execute children. Children are not like adults. Ask any parent. They do not have the same judgement, discipline, etc. They can change when they get older, if they get older. Families, communities and governments fail children. Then, the nal failure happens when they execute the child. Is it the fault of children that it is so easy for them to get their hands on guns, or is it the fault of the adults who refuse to have even reasonable gun control laws? It is the fault of the adults, but it is the children who pay the penalty. Eyewitness identication testimony is often inaccurate. Yet, we are willing to execute someone based on this inaccurate testimony. Around 1979 several robberies occurred in Wilmington, Del. The robber was polite to the victims. He was called the Gentlemen Bandit. Bernard Pagano was identied as the culprit. He had no alibi. Bernard Pagano was a Catholic priest. The prosecutor had seven eyewitnesses. The trial started and the eyewitnesses identied him as the bandit. However, the defense attorney hired a private investigator who found a man in Pennsylvania who

confessed to the robberies. There was a movie made about this trial. I hope they show it again. There are many more instances when eyewitnesses were wrong, especially when it came to identifying someone of a different race. Everyone knows that eyewitnesses can be wrong, yet we are willing to kill a human being based on testimony that may not be accurate. It is impossible to know when an eyewitness is wrong. They believe they have identied the correct person. To correct the misidentication in the future, the prisoner must be alive! If you kill the prisoner, no investigator, no confession, nothing can correct the error. There are many cases of evidence being faked. A Texas pathologist, Ralph R. Erdmann, worked as a contract medical examiner for more than 40 counties. He botched many of autopsies, faked more than 100 others and falsied dozens of forensic reports before a special prosecutor discovered his criminal activities. Erdmann pleaded guilty to falsifying autopsies. In 1987 John T. Spencer was sentenced to 50 years to life for a double murder in New York State. Spencer was convicted largely on a ngerprint lifted by New York State Police investigator Lt. Craig Harvey, who testied he found it on a Formica counter at the murder scene. Harvey, one of three troopers found guilty of criminal misconduct admitted that no ngerprints were found at the scene, Harvey got Spencers print when Spencer was booked by the police. You can never eliminate the possibility of false evidence. Human beings are not perfect. Maybe the police crime lab just makes an honest mistake, but the defendant does not have the resources to hire an accredited lab and an expert witness of their own. You must have a perfect system if you are going to have the death penalty, and perfection is not possible. People are not perfect, unless, of course, you are a Conservative. There have been many innocent people sentenced to death. A 1997 report released by the Death Penalty Information Center in Washington stated that there have been 69 cases between 1973 and 1997 in which people have been released from death row because they were improperly convicted or new evidence was discovered after they were sentenced to death. In 1996 a Northwestern University professor, David Protess, and some of his students worked on a class project. They invetigated the convictions of three men from Illinois who had been in jail 18 years for murder. One of them had been sentenced to death. Through the efforts of the professor and his students, all three men were released based on DNA evidence. What kind of justice system do we have that requires STUDENTS AND A PROFESSOR to nd evidence to free innocent prisoners? Shouldnt the justice system do that? Due to new DNA testing, more people are being released from death row. Between 1973 and 1999, 81 men and one woman sentenced to die have been released. What if you have a Confession? Do you have the killer? Take the confession of Gary Gauger. Gauger was convicted of the 1993 murders of his parents, on their farm in Richmond, Ill. The police had no eyewitnesses or physical evidence to tie Gauger to the crime. Gauger was questioned nonstop for 18 hours without a lawyer and the interrogation was not recorded. Gauger said he was exhausted and he began thinking he might have killed his parents in a blackout, even saying it at one point but then he insisted that he did not committed the crime. He was convicted based on his confession and sentenced to death. Through the efforts of Gaugers sister, Larry Marshall took the case and set Gauger free in 1996. A member of the Outlaws motorcycle gang confessed that he and an accomplice killed the couple in a robbery.

As of March, 2000 a Los Angeles investigtion found that 99 people were framed by police. Police falsied reports and gave false testimony. Convictions were overturned. Most police are honest, but you will always nd a few that are not. This cant be prevented. Between 1972 and 2000, 21 people sentenced to die in Florida have been freed from death row. Yet Florida continues to execute prisoners! Between 1987 and 2000, 13 men have been freed from Illinois death row. Gov. George Ryan blocked all executions pending a special investigation to review Illinois death penalty procedures. Ryan will create a special panel to nd out why so many innocent men were convicted and sentenced to die. If Gov. Ryan reads this chapter, he will better understand that the aws in the death penalty systems will always exist as long as human beings create the system. Did you know that in 33 states, as of August, 1999, new evidence cant be introduced in a criminal case more than six months after the nal judgment in state court? That makes no sense at all. Those states should change their laws. One thing that is hard to believe, that the criminal justice system allows, is jailhouse informant testimony. Prisoners come forward and say that a fellow prisoner has told them that he or she has committed a crime, and they are willing to testify against their fellow prisoner. Now, do you believe they are willing to testify against a fellow prisoner for nothing? No, they expect to get a reduction in their sentence for their testimony. Sometimes they get the reduction soon after they testify, and sometimes they get it later. Many times, years later, the informant recants their testimony and admit they just did it to get their sentence reduced. Prosecutors then often say they believe the original testimony and that the informant is now lying about their

new testimony. So, they are liars now, but the liar was not a liar when they rst testied? There is an assumption that the truth comes out in prison. Why would you confess to a crime in prison? It doesnt make any sense that you would tell anyone you are the killer, and especially another prisoner. Everyone knows there are lots of jailhouse informants. This testimony should never be allowed in any court. It is totally unreliable. What kind of system allows such testimony? One that wants a conviction at any price! The murder has been solved! The police are happy, the prosecutor is happy, the public is happy, everybody is happyexcept the innocent person who has been wrongfully convicted. There were 87 people freed from death row for the period between 1973 and 2000, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. The number just keeps growing. New Hampshire lawmakers voted to repeal the death penalty in May, 2000. However, Governor Jeanne Shaheen vetoed the repeal bill. It takes a brave politician to go against the death penalty. Governors and clemency/parole boards have the power to commute death penalty sentences, but rarely do. There is no real clemency system. It is political suicide to let a convicted prisoner escape the death penalty. Politicians and boards appointed by politicians know they cannot commute a death sentence, because opponents in the next election will say they are soft on crime and they will not get reelected or reappointed. Clemency systems are a farce. This so-called protection against killing the wrong person does not even exist! Any time you nd a politician that is against the death penalty, you have to have a great deal of respect for that person. In 1913, Mary Phagen was murdered. Leo Frank

was convicted of the murder. Georgia Governor John Slaton, who was about to run for the U.S. Senate, investigated the murder and gured out that someone else had committed the crime. The governor commuted the death sentence. Unfortunately, Leo Frank was taken from a prison farm and lynched by a mob. The mob would have lynched the Governor, too, if he hadnt left his ofce and the state. Needless to say, he did not run for the U.S. Senate. There was a 1988 movie made about this event called The Murder of Mary Phagen. John Slaton was a man of great courage. He was a great American. As of June, 2000, Texas had executed over 100 prisoners since Gov. George W. Bush was elected governor. Governor Bush did not think any innocent people had been executed while he was governor. Governor Bush had a perfect system, run by perfect people and led by a perfect governor. Isnt that amazing! Conservatives are always trying to cut the amount of money given to criminal defense and they want to speed up executions. This means that the chances of executing an innocent person are increased. Actually, to speed up executions, you would have to put a lot more money into the court system to pay for better defense attorneys, investigators, appeals, more judges, etc. However, cutting money and speeding up executions are popular with voters. So, you kill a few innocent people! No big deal! Unless it is you or a relative or a friend that is being executed for a crime they did not commit. Can you imagine anything more horrible than being on death row and knowing you are innocent, but you do not have the resources to prove your innocence that the police and the prosecutor had to prove your guilt? Imagine you are home with a relative watching T.V. At the same time, a friend of yours is robbing and killing someone. The police have some evidence and pick up your

friend for questioning. The police dont have enough evidence to convict your friend, so they work very hard for a confession. They tell him that he will not get the death penalty if he confesses. To avoid the death penalty, your friend says he was there, but you are the killer; he was just there as a witness who did nothing. He gives the police all the details about the killing. The details he gives are correct, of course, because he did the killing. You go to trial for murder. The police have an eyewitness, the actual killer. Your relative testies that you were home when the murder was committed. The jury believes your friend, not your relative, because your relative would probably lie to save your life. You are found guilty. When the jury and the judge need to decide if you get life without parole or the death penalty, they are swayed by the fact that you show no remorse, did not admit to the killing, and do not ask for forgiveness. Why would you say any of those things? You are innocent! You are given the death penalty and executed. You dont think this could happen to you? Just imagine if we add a few more factors to your case besides your friends testimony: the prosecutor had some bad or faked forensic evidence to use against you; they had a police ofcer who lied or made a mistake; the prosecutor withheld evidence, on purpose or accidentally, that would have helped your case; they had a jailhouse informant that said you told him you were the killer; your defense attorney was inferior or inexperienced, etc. You cannot prevent any of these things from happening. People want to solve the murder. People want to get promoted. People want to get elected to higher ofce. People want to get out of jail early. And people want an execution so they feel justice has been served. What you must understand is that because of all the problems that exist and will always exist with any system created by human beings, you can never be sure you are

not killing an innocent person when a death row inmate is executed. The system has to be perfect if you are going to kill people, which is impossible because we are not perfect. Whenever we think we are perfect, disaster is sure to follow.
5 POPULATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT

What will be the future human population gure on Earth? Many people have different ideas of what that number should be, for different reasons. Some people talk about Zero Population Growth (ZPG), or even the possibility of the population decreasing, but the correct gure is zero. There are only two ways to leave this planetdie or leave in a spaceship. This planet will cease to exist as we know it some day in the future, and anyone who says they can predict when it will happen is either a liar or a fool. Some say that all life will end when the sun gets hotter and turns Earth into another Venus. Some say it will end when an asteroid hits the Earth or a black hole sucks us in. Some say it will be caused by overpopulation and pollution. Some say it could happen through war, although the likelihood of that happening has been reduced. Some say it could happen by a biological accident or warhead. The truth is, no one knows when life on earth will cease. But, I can tell you for sure that it will. We have to leave this planet or die. The questions are, do we have enough time, and will we commit the resources necessary for enough humans to leave this planet so our species can survive? The human population on Earth will be reduced to zero, one way or another. Another absolute certaintly is that the Earth has nite resources, such as oil, gas, land, water, etc., and renewable resources such as trees/plants, air, food/sh, etc., which are not renewing themselves as fast as they used to because there are more people every day than the day before, and

they all want to consume more of everything. We are not prepared for anything ending or running out. Conservatives tell you there is no problem; you should not worry. Anyone, they say who warns you of a future problem is exaggerating and probably a little crazy. God will take care of everything. There is plenty of land on earth to handle billions more people. There is no population problem. Corporations must not have too many restrictions because they provide jobs. Corporations can be trusted to do the right thing when it comes to the environment. Conservatives are a real and present danger because they actually get people to believe these ideas. It took 123 years for the population to increase from 1 billion to 2 billion, then it took 33 years to reach 3 billion, 14 years to reach 4 billion and 13 years to reach 5 billion. Since 1800, life expectancy has risen from 27 years to 76 years. Continued progress in medicine can raise it even higher. In India, the population growth rate has dropped. However, there are about 72,000 Indians born every day, and the population increses by about 16 million a year. Conservatives love to quote declining growth rates. What they dont want you to understand is that there are so many people on earth already, even a declining growth rate adds millions to the Earths population every year. It took 12 years for the earths population to reach 6 billion, in 1999. There is no end in sight. There is a limit on how many people this planet can handle. Scientists have deciphered part of the human genetic code that plays a role in the bodys immune system. This may lead to improvements in organ transplants and improve our ability to ght various diseases. AIDS and Alzheimers vaccines are being tested. No one knows what scientists will cure in the future. Some of the population gures predicted in the future may not be calculating in the fact that people may live

longer in the future. If that happens, the population may grow at an even faster rate. Imagine what will happen to the popultion if we start cloning humans. Conservatives like to say that there is plenty of land on the planet for many more people. They say that everyone living now could t in the State of Texas. Most people already live in cities. We could make Texas one big city. But that is missing the point. The problem is not space, the problem is resources. Conservatives do not want you to think. If you think, you would understand that it takes a lot of land, oil, gas, clean water, trees, plants that produce oxygen, food, breathable air, housing, schools, roads, health care, landlls for garbage, etc., for every person living and those who will be born in the future. Global warming, the release of carbon dioxide and other gases (greenhouse gases) into the atmosphere where they trap heat from the sun just like a greenhouse and raise the temperature of the Earth, has been argued for years. Pollution from cars, factories, etc., contribute to the increase in greenhouse gases. In December 1997, the United States and 37 other countries agreed in Kyoto, Japan, to binding reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide released from burning coal and gas, from power plants, cars, etc.) by 2012. The United States has not ratied the agreement. Conservatives are opposed to this treaty. President Clinton fought against riders the Republican Congress put in spending bills that beneted certain industries at the expense of the environment and prevented the Clinton administration from reaching agreements with various countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions blamed for global warming. Lets hope a Conservative president does not allow a Conservative Congress to do whatever it wants to the environment in the name of business and prots.

The U.N.s environmental agency issued a report Global Environment Outlook 2000. They found higher levels of nitrogen in the water supply, eighty percent of the worlds forest cover has been cleared or degraded, a quarter of mammals species are at risk of extinction, and half the worlds coral reefs endangered. Experts debate over how fast the worlds climate can change. Some say it will take hundreds or thousands of years. Some say it could only take decades. Some say the last ice age ended fairly quickly and the climate could suddenly change under the right conditions. Global warming, caused by humans, could be one of those conditions. Damage to the ozone layer, in the upper atmosphere, was rst noticed in the colder Antarctic. Ozone blocks the suns ultrviolet rays that can cause cancer. Concern that the damage could spread led to a ban on refrigerants and spray propellants that destroy ozone. Damage to the ozone layer has been recorded over the North Pole also. We must never allow anyone to say this problem has been solved. We must continue to monitor the ozone and take any appropriate action necessary to preserve this protective layer. The Arctic ice cover decreased by about 5% between 1978 and 1995, as stated in a study by Norwegian researchers in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. B10A is an iceberg which is 38 miles long and 13 miles wide. It is one of the largest icebergs to ever break away from Antarctica. This and other large icebergs could be the result of global warming,. The melting of the Antarctic ice sheet could raise the worlds sea level by several feet. Global warming may be accelerating the melting process or global warming could prevent the process from reversing itself. Do not forget about the Arctic ice cap. It may be melting due to global warming also. It will only add to the problem facing costal communities.

There are millions of people suffering from chronic hunger on this planet. Many of these people live in developing countries. Large popultions stretch these countries resources. The hunger problem is not going to be solved any time soon. If the hunger problem is getting worse in most countries now, what is going to happen when the population continues to grow? We have the same problem with clean drinking water. We are used to having clean water and assume it will continue to be safe in the future. As the world population continues to increase, however, not only must we maintain the current clean supply, we must increase the amount of drinkable water every year. Some communities are already experiencing water shortages. Conservatives are not real good at solving future problems. They dont even like to address current problems, let alone future problems, especially if it is going to cost businesses money, hurt prots or increase taxes. They normally wait until the problem is so bad they nally have to address it. There is a real danger when you wait to the last second to x environmental problems, because then it may too late to reverse a disaster. Scientists have reported the discovery of new diseases that affect marine mammals. They also found large increases in algae in our oceans. The marine ecosystem is changing and we need to know why and how it is changing. Do you think it has something to do with humans dumping toxic organic pollutants into the worlds oceans? Conservatives seem to think that the oceans are really big places. Theres no need to worry about any problems because the oceans will x themselves. Well, they might x themselves if we stop dumping pollutants in them, but with the population growing, we will probably dump even more stuff in them. Lets see if you can gure out this problem: Each year there are more humans taking up more space and using

more resources. Also, each year there are fewer trees and plants. Trees and plants produce oxygen. People breath oxygen to stay alive. Does anyone else besides me see a problem looming in the future? Dont worry, Conservatives will tell you there is lots of oxygen. Another problem caused by deforestation is ash oods. When we destroy a forest, erosion of topsoil and vegetation leads to ash ooding. In 1997, the World Wildlife Funds Forests for Life Campaign released a survey showing that there were 20 billion acres of forest existing in the world 8,000 years ago and now there is only 7.5 billion acres. Conservatives will tell you that we can just grow new trees. The problem with that idea is that it takes a long time to grow trees, and there are more people every year that want to use those trees for houses, paper, etc. I hope you have heard about the declining population of frogs, toads and salamanders. Amphibians are also suffering from an increase in deformities such as missing legs, extra legs, missing eyes, etc. Researchers say there are various causes. Some say the thinning ozone layer is allowing more dangerous ultraviolet light to reach the Earths surface. Some researchers say an increase in retinoids, found in water samples, are affecting amphibians. Retinoids are compounds that include retinoic acid. Researchers say toxics, such as pesticides, have an affect on amphibians. Other reserchers say defects in frogs are caused by a trematode, which is a parasitic worm. Fertilizer runoff may be causing the water snail population to increase and the water snail is a host of the trematode. Consequently, there are more trematodes to attack frogs. Or, maybe frogs are weaker from pollution, which makes it easier for the worm to attack them.

Why should you care what happens to amphibians? Because what happens to amphibians is an indication of what can happen to humans. Many species are already extinct and many more are currently threatened. Even our closest relativesgorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutansare endangered. As the human popultion grows, other species habitats are destroyed. There is no end to the human need for more and more resources. Why should you care if species die off? As each species becomes extinct, we come closer to the extinction of the last specieshumans. Do you think you can let each species die off one by one and not destroy the ecosystem at the same time? As the worlds economy improves, the environment suffers. You can not continue to destroy the environment without having a disastrous effect on available resources and the economy in the future. If our species lasts long enough to get off of this planet before it is destroyed by us or something else, like an asteroid, there will be Conservative religious people who will not want to leave their holy shrines, their holy land, or their planet. They probably will believe that God will save them at the last moment. Dont argue with them or force them to leave. Let them stay and die. You are better off without them.
6 RELIGION
How many religions are there? When you add all the different major religions, all the divisions, sects or denominations, and all the minor religions and cults, there must be hundreds. Each one is absolutely positive that their religion is the correct one and everyone else has the wrong religion. They are going to heaven, or wherever, and all the people who subscribe to other religious beliefs are not going to go where they think they are going. Sometimes, to prove they have the right religion, they kill people of other religions! Now, what are the mathematical odds that you have the right religion? Also, you must follow all the rules of the right religion exactly and correctly. The odds are very long that you have the correct religion, the correct division of that religion and follow the rules perfectly. Yet, everyone is sure they have the right one. Some people change religions. They had the right religion before, but now the new religion is the absolutely correct one. Therefore, the rst religion must have been wrong. What about all the people who still believe in the rst religion? They all must be wrong and will have to change to the new religion. How do you know the new religion is the correct one and the person who switched did not make a mistake? What are the odds on that? Get your calculators out! How can anyone who thinks about these things be sure they have the correct religion? I guess the answer is, you just dont think about these things. You are just supposed to believe in a religion, and should not question the authority of that religion.

When you are a child, you are taught to believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, God (or something similar) and many other things you do not question as a child. As you became an adult, you start to question various things and realize that many of them are not true. You stop believing in things you once thought were real. Most religions offer you life after death. You dont really die when you die; you live on in some form somewhere elseIf you pick the correct religion. Everyone is afraid of dying. It is hard, if not impossible, to reject an offer of life after death. Very few people are able to turn down that offer from one organization or another. It is an offer you cant refuse. My problem with religion began when I started to ask questions. The worst answer I received was when I was told that there was no answer, you just must believe and stop asking questions. Religion is always right, and even if it is proven wrong, it is still right about everything else. If it is proven wrong again, it is still right about everything else. You get the idea: no matter how many times religion is proven wrong, it has to be right about everything else or you dont get to go where you want to go when you die. It is all so illogical to me that nothing they say now can get me to believe in any religion. The Crusades were the Christian military expeditions to recapture the Holy Land from the Muslims. They started in the 11th century and ended in the 14th century. They even had a Childrens Crusade in 1212, in which thousands of children died from hunger and disease or were sold into slavery. Eventually, the Christians lost everything and were forced out of the Holy Land. A lot of people died for nothing during the crusades. Christians like to rationalize events by saying its Gods will. I guess God was not with them when they lost the Crusades. The Christians were wrong on that one.

The Inquisition, medieval church courts, occurred in the Middle Ages. They used physical torture, like the rack, burning with live coals, etc, to nd heretics. If you denied the charges and were found guilty, you could be burned at the stake. The leaders of the Inquisition were sure they were right. It sounds crazy now, but religion is a little crazy if you think about it. Its better not to think about it or ask any questions. In 1600 philospher and priest Giordano Bruno was accused of being a heretic. Bruno was a contemporary of Galileo and believd that the Earth was not the center of the universe and the universe may be innite. Bruno was burned at the stake by the Inquisition. The Christians were just a little wrong on that one. Does this make you wonder how many other things they are wrong about? Galileo Galilei was a 17th-century astronomer. He was tried for heresy and forced to recant such concepts as the Earth moves. In 1992 the Catholic Church nally admitted that it was wrong to condemn Galileo. Even when science proves that a religious idea is wrong, religion does not like to admit it. Religion, of course, is right about everything else, however, or so they would have you believe. This could not happen in the United States, but it did. From March to September 1692, the Salem Witch Trials occurred in Salem Village, Mass., U.S.A. They hanged 19 Witches and stoned one other to death. You have to be a very fervent religious adherent to believe in witches and do such terrible things. Since I am not religious, I do not believe in witches and would never do what they did. The religious people were just a tad wrong on this one, but they must be right on everything else. You see, they are perfectPERFECT EVIL.

When the AIDS epidemic started, Conservatives said it was a gay disease. Conservative politicians either were afraid to take any action or condemned gays openly, thus delaying research or assistance. Religious Conservatives like Rev. Jerry Falwell said; A Gay plague is sweeping across our country. You cannot fool God. You break all of his laws and God Almighty will judge you. By the time President Reagan made his rst speech on AIDS more than 25,000 Americans had died. The movie, And The Band Played On shows in detail what happened at the beginning of the AIDS epedemic. Every child should watch this movie to understand how evil and mean Conservatives can be, how they can twist the truth and hurt, or even kill, people. The truth was AIDS was an infectious disease, which could be passed to any human by body uids. It had nothing to do with God being against homosexuals. Gays and nongays could get the disease through blood transfusions, sex, contaminated needles, etc. Hemophiliacs, people who had operations, intravenous drug users, hospital workers, sexual partners of anyone who was infected, babies from their mothers, etc, could get AIDS. Religious Conservatives were wrong when they said AIDS was a gay plague. Of course, there was no penalty paid by the Conservatives for their error. They just pretend it was no big deal or they ignore the fact that they were wrong again. You cant attack them, because you want life after death. No matter how wrong they are or how mean they are, they always get away with it. On September 13, 2001 Rev. Pat Robertson had Rev. Jerry Falwell as his guest on The 700 Club T.V. show. They said that the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were probably what America deserved. They suggested that God had withdrawn support of America because of abortionists, gays, lesbians,

feminists, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), pornography, secular schools and courts, etc. This was an insult to all the decent and innocent people who died or were injured, including relatives and friends, on September 11. It is hard to believe anyone believes anything these Conservatives say. Conservatives preach hate, just like terrorists preach hate. People are hurt and even killed because of what Conservatives preach. There have been many instances in history where people of different religions have killed each other solely because their religious beliefs were different. It never seems to change or stop. They will probably keep killing each other forever. The Israeli Jews and Arab Palestinians have been killing each other for years. In 1996 Bosnian ofcials found mass graves of Muslims that were massacred by Serbs. Men, women and children were killed because of their religion. The killings in Northern Ireland by both Catholics and Protestants (both are Christians) were particularly despicable in July, 1998. Three brothers burned to death in an arson attack. A neighbor reported hearing 10-year-old Richard, 9year-old Mark and 7-year-old Jason Quinn screaming as the re destroyed their home in Ballymoney. Their Catholic mother and her Protestant boyfriend escaped, but could not rescue the brothers. Who killed them? Religion killed them. How religious people can rationalize what they do always amazes me. The evil they can do knows no bounds. In February, 1999 it was reported that over 100 people had been killed in a month of religious riots in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku. Violence between Muslims and Christians is worsening. As of January 2000, at least 2,000 people have died in Indonesia. Since 90 percent of the people are Muslims, Christians fear for their lives.

In the southern Philippines militants take hostages. The rebels demand money and the creation of an Islamic state. It just goes on and on. Jim Jones created his Peoples Temple. Jones moved his followers to Jonestown, Guyana. After a visit by U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan, D-Calif., on Nov. 18, 1978, Jones was afraid he was going to be exposed as a tyrant. Jones sent his men after Ryan. They killed Ryan and four others as they were trying to board a plane. Then, Jones convinced 900 followers to drink cyanide-laced punch. Almost everyone died in the mass suicide-murder. Most took the poison, but some people were forcibly injected with poison, babies had poison punch squirted into their mouths, some followers were shot and Jones was shot through his head. David Koresh took control of the Branch Davidians. He and his followers lived in the Waco compound near Waco, Texas. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms investigated Koresh for weapons violations and child abuse. Federal agents were killed and wounded as they raided Koreshs Waco compound. A re engulfed Koresh and about 80 of his people in April, 1993. In 1995, Republicans held hearings in Washington to attack the governments raid on Koreshs compound. However, the Republicans attack on federal law enforcement agents was put on the defensive when Kiri Jewell testied that, when she was 10-year-old, Koresh forced her to have sex with him. Kiri also said she was taught how to use a gun to commit suicide. Conservative support of David Koresh was evil. In October, 1994 at least 48 members of the Cross and Rose religious sect committed mass suicide in southern Switzerland. Several of the victims were children. Police found French, Swiss and Canadian passports among the dead. In march, 1997 thirty-nine members of Heavens Gate committed suicide in San Diego County. They had to die

so they could transport themselves to a spacecraft that was located near the Hale-Bopp comet. So many religions to choose from, and they are all sure they are the right one. Some of these religions are deadly and evil. Religions have been built around laughter, snakes, re, almost anything will do. I guess you can get some people to believe in anything. Once you promise them life after death, you can get them to do anything you want, no matter how bizarre it is. Religious people do not like Charles Darwin, a 19thcentury scientist who advanced the theory of evolution. In 1925, it was illegal to teach Darwins theory in school. John Scopes, a teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, volunteered to challenge the law and the Scopes Monkey Trial followed. The right to think and speak was on trial. Clarence Darrow defended Scopes. Scopes lost and was ned $100.00, but the verdict was overturned on appeal. Scopes was supposed to teach the divine creation of man. The Bible was perfect, and evolution was wrong. Most people think this is a closed issue, that it is okay to teach evolution, but, Conservatives continue to attack evolution. Conservatives do not like people who think or have ideas that are different from their beliefs. We are all supposed to think as they do, but it is dangerous to any free nation to have a group of people who want to suppress science and thought. What makes us different from animals is our ability to think and reason. In August, 1999 the Kansas Board of Education rejected evolution as a scientic principle. The board voted to eliminate evolution as an underlying principle of biology and other sciences. In 2000 researchers reported nding a new fossil which indicates that humans evolved from an ancestor that walked on its knuckles like gorillas. So, maybe humans did not come down from the trees and start to walk upright.

Researchers are discovering new things all the time and will discover more in the future. No one knows exactly what they will nd. Charles Darwins theory of evolution may or may not be absolutely correct. Time, science and history will prove if it is correct or not. Maybe it will be proven to be partially correct or lead us to a new theory. What is scary to me is the Conservatives censorship of thought. The idea that only creationism must be taught in schools is wrong. No school should stop teaching evolution, or any other scientic theory, just because Conservatives dont like it. Religious Conservatives think they are perfect, but they are not perfect. They have been proven wrong many times. In 1998 House Republicans, in Washington, tried to pass a law to allow the posting of the Ten Commandments in public places. This was a reaction to an Alabama judge being ordered by the courts to take down a copy of the Ten Commandments he had on his courtroom wall. The courtroom is public property. Of course, which biblical inerpretation of the Commandments should be posted in public places? This would not restore our religious liberties. To the contrary, this would promote one religion in this country. What about the other religions? Can they also post their rules in courtrooms and other public places? How can we allow just one set of religious rules to be posted and then tell every other religion that not only are they not allowed to post their rules, but they and their children must look at and observe rules they may not believe in? Are judges all supposed to be Christians now? This idea pits one religion against all other religions. Posting one set of religious rules in public places is an evil idea. Across the United States children have been forced to participate in Christian prayer, in classrooms, at sporting events, pep rallies, graduation ceremonies, banquets, etc.

Any child who did not participate would be ridiculed by other children, coaches, teachers, or administrators. Parents and children have been forced to le lawsuits to protect their freedom of religion. The courts have provided some help to children who are a minority when they choose not to participate in forced prayer and their parents who do not want others telling their children when and how to pray. It is shameful that the courts have to protect children from choosing between forced prayer or being ostracized. Conservatives are very narrow-minded. They have no understanding that people of other religions feel just as strongly about their religions as Conservatives do. Other religions also have their own books and prayers that they believe are the ones everyone should read and speak. Trying to force another religion on children of a different religion will always hurt the children. Of course, Conservatives dont care who they hurt, which is a perfect description of evil. A silent reection or a moment of silence must meet three standards set by the Supreme Court: it has a secular purpose, does not promote religion and does not excessively entangle government with religion. I dont have a problem with a true moment of silence, as long as it meets the Supreme Court standards. In June, 2000 the Supreme Court ruled that a Texas school districts policy of student-led prayer at football games violated the constitutionally required separation of religion and government. The two Galveston County families who sued the school district in 1995 had their identities sealed by the courts. Sometimes you have to hide identities from Conservatives because they can be very violent and vengeful people. Conservatives claim that kids are not allowed to pray in school and at school functions. That is a lie. Kids can pray all they want as long as it does not disrupt school, and as long as they do not force their religion on other kids.

If you want to force children to listen to prayer at school and at other public gatherings, you must make sure that prayers are said for all religions. There are prayers for Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. What kind of religious freedom do you have if most religions are not allowed to say their prayers in public, and children of various religions are forced to hear prayers that are not part of their religion? Of course, if schools did allow public prayers for each religion, children would be labeled by their religion. This could cause conicts among the religions at schools and other places. Our country has always tried to have religious tolerance and not pit one religion against the other, as happens in so many other countries. We know how mean people can be to anyone who is labeled as different. Christian Conservatives are attacking Halloween as a satanic conspiracy. They try to get schools to ban Halloween activities. Some Conservatives even tie Halloween to a conspiracy to create a New World Order under the control of the United Nations. Conservatives are very good at seeing conspiracies, even when there are none. Some Christians believe that Halloween is a pagan ritual of witches and devils. Some believe that it is the devils birthday. These Christians need to get a life. They need to try to deal with reality. They need to separate their religious beliefs from the reality of Halloween. Halloween is about fun, parties, costumes, candy and make-believe. Stop trying to twist something good and fun into something evil, thereby creating evil in the process. Stop hurting children and lling their heads with sick and evil ideas. Conservatives have even attacked the Harry Potter books, which were written by J. K. Rowling. Millions of children love these books about a boy, a wizards world, good over evil etc. Conservatives say the books teach children about witchcraft and want the books banned.

Conservatives can be so stupid. Anything they do not understand, they want to ban. They are always trying to ban books. We must be always on guard against their evil ideas or the only books in our schools will be religious books. Even that wont stop them from banning books, because certain religious books of other religions will also be banned. In 1998 the Southern Baptist Convention called for a wife to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband. In 2000 the Southern Baptist Convention said that While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the ofce of pastor is limited to men. Wouldnt it be hilarious if God came down from the heavens and He turned out to be a woman? After all, women gave birth to the human race, didnt they? In 2000 Bob Jones University dropped its ban on interracial dating due to the criticism which followed George W. Bushs visit to the school. Bush apologized after his visit because he did not criticize the schools anti-Catholic views and racial policies. The school did not allow interracial dating, but it started admitting black students, after it lost its tax exemption in 1983. It would be funny, if it wasnt so evil. Religious rules, set in stone at a fundamentalist school, changed because of presidential politics and tax breaks. I guess they still hate Catholics, however. It appears that God hates many athletes and sports teams, because God only allows one team to win the championship each year, or one driver to win the race, or one boxer to win the ght, etc. We know this thanks to all the sports gures thanking God for their win. God apparently does not like the losers. It must be difcult for those sports gures when they nally do lose and have to face the fact that God does not like them anymore. Maybe if they prayed harder. (Just make sure you have the correct prayer.)

It is easy to understand why people want life after death but if you want real life after death, you will have to transfer your memory into another human body or into a machine that will maintain your memories. We are our memories and thoughts. When we lose them, we lose life itself. When we wake up each day, we remember who we are and we have all the memories of our lifetime. That makes us unique human beings, like no other human before or any human in the future. Even if you could clone an exact duplicate of your own body, it would be useless to continue life in that new body if you could not transfer your memories as well. I dont expect to convert anyone to atheism. I cannot offer you life after death. I believe that you should live your life not hating or hurting people who are different than you. Religious people hate people of other religions. They hate homosexuals, degrade women, and hate people who do not agree with them, etc. Conservatives have to create bad guys so they can be the good guys, and they can never be wrong, even when they are.
7 GAYS
There are homosexual (gay) myths that try to demonize gays: 1. Gays recruit straight people and make them turn gay. Wrong. A person is either gay, or not gay, or bisexual. Whatever you are is what you are, and you became what you are long before you became an adult. You cannot change your sexuality like you can change religions or clothes. Just think about who and what you are now. What would it take to make you change your sexual preference? I can tell you that nothing anyone could say or do is ever going to change my sexual preference. For anyone to even suggest that they could change me is ludicrous. A gay person cannot make you gay. Why would a gay even try to date a straight person and risk almost certain rejection? Remember how hard it was to ask someone out on a date? Maybe you asked a mutual friend if the person you were interested in was interested in you. You looked for some sign that they were interested, maybe some common interest. You surely would not approach someone knowing that the chances you were going to be rejected were 100%! If you are a straight (heterosexual) person, can you imagine yourself asking a gay person out on a date? What makes you think the opposite is likely to happen? 2. Dont bend over in a public shower with a gay person present, because they will attack you. Wrong. This one

is so ridiculous it is hard to believe anyone can think it. Where are the statistics showing all these imaginary attacks taking place? If it was actually happening, there would be a big public outcry. Again, why would a gay risk certain rejection or trouble with the police? They face enough trouble and rejection just by being gay. The last thing they need is to make it worse. Conservatives think gays are sinners just because they are gay. 3. Gays are all pedophiles who want to have sex with children. Wrong. There are gays who are pedophiles, and there are straight people who are pedophiles. In fact, there are more straight people than gays who are pedophiles because there are more straight people than gay people. Being a pedophile has nothing to do with being gay. I stayed at a friends house once, who happened to be gay. He showed me the local sights, including some gay bars. It was interesting. He pointed out various people he knew and lled me in on some of the nuances of the bars. At no time either at his house, at the bars, or anywhere else did anybody bother me in any way. Why would they? I am straight. It is hard enough to start a relationship with someone who has the same sexual orientation as you do. Gays are discriminated against, just like people of certain religions are discriminated against. False myths are used against religions, just as they are used against gays. For example Jews are all supposed to be rich and control the world. This is, of course, false, but many people believe it. Some people believe all Catholics do exactly what the Pope tells them to do. That has never happened and never will. American Catholics especially, break the Popes rules. They use birth control, support the death penalty, etc. Everyone in certain religions is commonly believed to be a zealot. The truth is, some are zealots and some are not. You can get Conservatives to believe anything, because they

believe things without question and ignore facts. They are very good at repeating things that are not true. They never let facts stand in the way of a good lie. In the movie Philadelphia Denzel Washington played an African American lawyer who does not like gays and is afraid of AIDS. Denzels character meets a gay lawyer who needs representation, but he rejects him because he is gay and has AIDS. Later in the movie Denzels character realizes the gay lawyer is being discriminated against and decides he must help him. This is a movie every high school student should watch. Conservatives used black myths to demonize black people, just as they use gay myths to attack gay people. You can always nd some examples in a groups population that support these myths, but when you look at the whole population, you see that most of the group does not support the myths. If you make the effort to check out the facts, you will see the myth is simply not true. Remember when it was illegal for black people to marry white people? Conservatives were sure they were right on that one. Now, interracial couples can get married, but it still is illegal for gays to get married. Marriage has everything to do with being in love, and nothing to do with being gay or not. Remember when black people were always discriminated against when it came to employment? Gays now face discrimination in employment and in many places they can lose a job just for being gay. Remember when they called black people niggers, a very mean, derogatory and hurtful name? Now, they call gays queers, faggots, etc. to hurt them. Conservatives like to tear people down using name-calling and myths. That way, Conservatives can build themselves up. things, they actually lower themselves. They are just too mean and stupid to know how low they are. There are many similarities between what Conservatives did to black people and other minorities, and what they are doing to gay people today. Conservatives need bad guys, and I guess gays are it right now. They dont have the Russians to hate any more, so they need somebody now to hate. In 1973 the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association stated that homosexuality was not a mental illness. Homosexuals are not sick and they do not need to be cured. The so-called conversion or reparative therapy, which tries to change gay people into straight people, has not been proven to work and actually hurts homosexuals. This type of therapy can cause depression in gays because it assumes gays choose to be gay and are not trying to become straight. Current scientic evidence indicates that gays are born with their sexual orientation. They do not change as they get older. There is also no evidence that sexual orientation can be changed. Think about it. Who would choose to be gay? Who would want to be ostracized, hated, regjected when you apply for a job, red from your job, beaten up or even killed? Yet, conservatives still try to convince people that gays can be converted to being straight and it is the gay persons fault for not trying to change. Therefore, anything that happens to them is their fault. This kind of crazy logic does not work because it starts with a false premisegay people choose to be gay and can be cured. This is how Conservatives with so-called good intentions actually hurt gay people. Conservatives say they are

doing good, but in reality they follow an evil path. They think they are perfect and know what is right for gays. Conservatives are perfectPERFECT EVIL. In 1988 James D. Moseley was sent to jail for having oral sex with his wife. Moseley violated Georgias sodomy law. He served 18 months before being released pending appeal. Moseleys wife accused him of rape and sodomy. Moseley said she was using the charges to get custody of the children. It did not work, he was acquitted of rape and forced sodomy. However, he made a mistake by admitting he had oral sex with his wife. He was found guilty of sodomy without aggravation (consentual oral or anal sex) and was sentenced to ve years in jail. I bet you never thought that you could go to jail for having oral or anal sex with your spouse or with someone else for that matter. When Conservatives use laws to go after people they dont like, they can get you in their net, also. That is another reason why Conservatives are so dangerous to freedom and democracy. They dont really believe in freedom. You must think as they do, act as they do and hate as they do. If gays are bad people for having committed sodomy, then straight people are just as bad if they commit sodomy, too. That means there are millions of bad Americans and they could go to jail, depending on what state they live in or are visiting, and who they know or dont know (i.e. are you rich and powerful?). Michael Bowers was Georgias state attorney general. He successfully defended Georgias anti-sodomy law before the Supreme Court. He also used sodomy to jutify his withdraw of a job offer from a gay lawyer and won approval from a circuit court. Bowers disclosed that, for 10 years, he had an affair with a married employee. Adultery is also a crime in Georgia. Do you think the Conservative, Bowers, was prosecuted for his crime of adultery? No way. when one of their own gets caught, they start to preach forgiveness. I just love to watch the Conservative hypocrites beg for forgiveness. They have no forgiveness for others in their hearts, if they have one, and every once in a while they get a taste of their own medicine. It is hard to believe that our great country has or ever had laws against something as private as consensual sex between adults. Sodomy and adultery laws are evil. In 1995 the Florida Baptist Convention called for a boycott of the Walt Disney Co. because Disney provides health insurance for gay couples, produces objectionable programing, etc. We live in a country where millions of people do not have health insurance. Then a company decides to do a good thing by giving more Americans health coverage. I thought it was a good idea. Conservatives objected to Disney-owned ABCs T.V. show Ellen whose star and title character were lesbian. Conservatives take a good thing and make it a bad thing. More Americans with health coverage is a good thing, but Conservatives turn it into a bad thing. A television show that shows that gays are not bad people is a good thing, but Conservatives dont want you to think of gays as good people. They want you to hate them. Lynn Johnston, creator of the For Better or for Worse comic strip, angered some Conservative readers and editors when she revealed that one of her characters was gay. A few newspapers will not run her strip if the gay character is in it. Maybe Conservatives think straight people will become gay if they read a comic about a gay person. The power of the newspaper can be overwhelming, you know. Or maybe Conservatives are just NUTS! In 1998, religious leader Pat Robertson was not happy that Orlando, FL ew rainbow ags from utility poles during the Gay Days celebration. So, on his June 8 The 700 Club T.V. show, Robertson said I would warn Orlando

that youre right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I dont think Id be waving those ags in Gods face if I were you. I hope when the hurricanes hit, and of course they willin Florida its not exactly newsthe storms can pick out the Conservatives from the Liberals. We wouldnt want any good Conservatives getting hurt by accident. If you are a Conservative and the hurricane does any damage or harm to you, make sure you contact Pat for reimbursement. Jerry Falwell criticized the Teletubbies childrens TV show in his magazine National Liberty Journal. Tinky Winky is a character who carries a magic bag. Falwell said he was carrying a purse, is purple (a gay color) and has a triangle shaped antenna on his head (a gay symbol). I guess Falwell thinks the show will inuence children. Maybe kids will learn to like gay people instead of hating them. Conservatives do not want children to think of gay people as normal people, because that could change straight children into gay children. This is just twisted logic. Conservatives are just plain mean when they attack a childrens program. If you try hard enough, you can see symbols everywhere. Conservatives are paranoid. They are the ones who are mentally ill, not gays. In 1999 Georgias Southern Baptist convention voted to expel two churches that let homosexuals serve as leaders and allowed a gay wedding. Previously, the Texas Southern Baptist state convention expelled a church due to the issue of homosexuality. Conservatives cannot allow dissension or free thought. They can not tolerate anyone who does not think exactly as they do. They are right, and everyone else is wrong, and they will punish anyone who dares to disagree. In 1996 the Salt Lake City Board of Education banned all nonacademic clubs. Federal law requires public schools

At East High School some of the clubs that had to disband were the Chess Club, the Computer Club, the Hispanic Club, Young Republicans, Young Democrats, the Ski Club, Bible Clubs, etc. The social componet of school life has been destroyed. Conservatives do not care who they hurt, even if its children. People who hurt children are very evil people. It is easy to see the evil in communism, dictators, terrorists, etc., but it is harder to see the evil in Conservatives because they hide behind the idea that they are doing the right thing. They would destroy freedom in the U.S., if they had to, to enforce their hatred and bigotry. They are the only real threat to freedom and democracy in this country. Other threats we can see clearly and defeat with resolve. These are what some people call clear and present dangers. Sometimes it is very hard to see the real danger, because it is disguised as good. In 1995, and at other times, Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., who has fought homosexual rights, wanted to reduce the amount of federal money spent on AIDS sufferers. Helms said that their deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct caused their disease. Let us examine some of the deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct according to Jesse The All-Knowing Helms. Adults and children have AIDS due to blood transfusions performed before the blood supply was safe. Hospital workers were accidentally infected by AIDScontaminated needles. Babies got AIDS from their mothers and were born with the disease. Innocent spouses got AIDS from their husband or wife through no fault of their own. You get the idea, AIDS is not a homosexual disease and never has been. Conservatives could care less about who gets hurt when they go after gays. The delay in AIDS research right from the start when AIDS was discovered cost many people

their lives. What if the next fatal virus is found in the gay community rst and is as easy to contract as the common cold? Will the Conservatives condemn us all to death by making sure the government does almost nothing until it is too late? The militarys dont ask, dont tell policy says gays in the military must keep their sexual orientation private and bars commanders from asking about homosexual conduct unless they have credible information that it has occurred. Gays can be discharged for engaging in homosexual acts. This policy has caused many problems and needs to be modied. It still assumes gays are bad people and that the gay myths are true, especially the one about gays molesting and accosting straight people. Its simply ridiculous. Remember what was going to happen to the military if they let black people be anything but cooks? Conservatives were wrong then, as usual. Remember what was going to happen if they let women be anything but clerks? Conservatives were wrong there, again. Now, they are wrong about gays. But Conservatives are never wrong, no matter how many times they are wrong. Maybe they think the law of averages means that they will get something right someday, but I dont think so! In 1998 two men robbed Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming college student. They also beat him severly and tied him to a fence. He died at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. One of the reasons the murderers chose Shepard was because he was gay. You dont need to tie someone to a fence and beat him to death just to rob him. This was an expression of pure hate that these two men learned from good Conservatives. Conservative demonstrators picketed Shepards memorial service. One sign they carried said, God Hates Fags. In 1999 two California brothers were charged with shooting a gay couple. Both of the gay men died. One of

the brothers, Benjamin Matthew Williams said Im not guilty of murder; Im guilty of obeying the laws of the Creator. Conservatives say that they are not responsible for people who commit these crazy acts, but, in fact, they are the ones who incite people with their anti-gay rhetoric. That is one of the things that makes Conservatives so dangerous. They think they can attack a group of people verbally, and any violence that happens to that group is not their fault. They are wrong. You are responsible for what you say, especially when it harms other people. The people you hurt should, at least, be able to sue you for inaming people to commit harmful acts. That way, if you cant put Conservatives in jail for the harmful things they say, maybe you can take their money away from them. In 2000 the Senate approved civil-rights legislation that would add sexual orientation, gender and disability to the current list of federal hate crimes. The current list includes race, religion or national origin. The bill was sent to the House where House Majority Leader Richard Armey, R-Texas, said he did not expect the House to consider the legislation. Conservatives will prevent this from becoming law. Only a Democratic congress and a Democratic president can assure passage of this legislation. There could come a time when gay people will be looked upon as an important factor in the survival of the human race. When overpopulation becomes a severe problem, gays will not be adding to the problem because they cannot produce children. Of course, Conservatives will still nd a way to attack them, but it will be an interesting turn of events.
8 THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND THE FLAG

In 1998 MaryKait Durkee, a high school student in California, refused to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. She believed America had a lot of problems and did not believe the message as stated by the Pledge was correct. Her mother tried to explain to school ofcials that MaryKait had her permission not to say the Pledge. MaryKait had to stand when the Pledge was said by the other students to avoid further school punishment. When you have children say the same thing over and over, every day, it tends to lose its meaning. When you force children to say something every day that they do not believe in, you create the opposite effect of the one you want. Not only do they not believe what they are saying, but they begin to hate it. How can you possibly believe that forcing them to say it will make them believe in it? How can you believe that forcing children to say what you believe in is freedom? I like the Pledge of Allegiance, aside from the mention of God. It is something that should be taught in class, but there should be two pledgesone with God and one without, like when you swear to tell the truth in a court of law. But I would never force a child or anyone else to say the pledge just because I like it. You see, unlike Conservatives, I believe in freedom, even if sometimes I dont agree with what another person is doing or not doing. I respect their right of free expression.

Over the years various conservative Presidents and other Conservative politicians have tried to pass legislation to ban the burning of the American ag by protestors. Politicians have also tried to amend the American Constitution to make ag desecration a crime. The Supreme Court has ruled that ag burning is protected by the First Amendment. It is the free expression of an individual or a group that may be different from your views. If you examine the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights you will see that freedom and free speach were very important to Americans. You better have a good reason to take that freedom away from Americans. The government should never prohibit the free expression of ideas. If the American ag does not represent freedom, what does it representgovernment repression of free thought and speech? There are very few cases of ag desecration in America. Most of the time they are protesting something our government has done, which they perceive as evil or wrong. Also, how do you dene ag desecration? If you or your children wear items that have the ag printed on them, will you be arrested? Can you eat off of a plate with the ag on it or use a napkin with the ag on it? Conservatives do not like freedom. They want us all to conform to their ideas. When you allow Conservatives to take even a little freedom from us, you allow them to do what no other country or army could force us to dogive up freedom. That is why Conservatives are so dangerous. The danger to our freedom will come from within, not from another country where we see the danger and can defeat it easily. What will Conservatives hate next and tell us to give away our freedoms for? I dont like ag burners, but I can understand why someone would burn it to protest the Vietnam War. I supported the men and women who were in our military during that war, but the war itself was wrong.

I was a Vietnam-era veteran. I may not support the person who is burning the ag, but I will support their right to burn it as long as I live. I know this is not a popular position, but it is the right one. It takes courage to do the right thing, especially when the majority is against you. All I can do is to try to show everyone who is really good and who is really evil. If you want to ban something truly offensive, then ban the government from ying the Nazi ag. Hitlers ag should be offensive to everyone. You can also ban any government in the U.S. from ying the Confederate ag, which is equally offensive. The Confederate ag represents a group of secessionist who tried to preserve one of the great evils of all time, slavery. I dont care that the Confederates fought bravely. The Rebels were wrong and they deserved to lose the Civil War. They and their evil had no more chance of winning than Hitlers Germany did in WWII. The Germans also fought bravely during WWII. So what? They were evil and wrong. Racist, White Supremacists and people who hate the government all love to y the Nazi ag and the Confederate ag as their own. They know what those ags representhatred and bigotry. In 2000 the South Carolina legislature nally removed the Confederate ag from the state capitol buildings dome. This action was taken after the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People initiated a tourism boycott of South Carolina in 1999. In 2001 the Georgia legislature reduced the large Confederate ag emblem on the state ag to one of ve small ags from Georgias history. The legislature wanted to avoid the problems that entangled South Carolina. Mississippi still has the Confederate ag emblem on its state ag. In 2001 voters rejected a new ag without the Confederate emblem and voted to keep the old ag. The Mississippi state ag can hurt the states image.

To African Americans the Confederate ag represents slavery, racism, whippings, shackles, oppression, rape, lynchings, segregation, terror, etc. Obviously, some people still do not understand how African Americans feel about the Confederate ag. During the 2000 Republican primary campaign between George W. Bush and John McCain, the candidates were asked their position on the Confederate ag. They both indicated the ag was a symbol of heritage and the state of South Carolina should decide the fate of the ag. McCain promised honesty and straight talk in his campaign. He would not lie to get votes. However, after Bush lockedup the primary, McCain admitted in a speech that he really believed the ag should come down and he was sorry he had said otherwise. John McCain had to take a similar position to that of George W. Bush: South Carolina should decide what happens to the Confederate ag. Well, of course they were the ones who decided to remove the ag. But both Bush and McCain should have had the courage to take a position on whether it is right or wrong to y such an offensive ag on government grounds. McCain nally told the truth, but Bush had to be careful not to anger any Conservatives. This is another reason why Conservatives are so dangerousthey can make good people say bad things or be afraid to speak out against evil. Conservatives can make politicians take positions they do not agree with, but must support to get elected. When it comes to the Confederate ag, the South just cant get over the fact that they lost the war and their slaves. Confederates tried to tear this country apart, and they failed. Now, they lie when they say the war wasnt about slavery. Slavery is exactly what it was about. The war is over. They lost, and no matter how many times they y the Confederate ag, they are not going to change the outcome. To me, ying the Confederate ag is worse than burning the U.S. ag. The ying of the Confederate ag desecrates and is an insult to the U.S. ag. A real U.S. patriot would only y the U.S. ag.

In 1997 the number of minorities entering medical schools dropped. The largest drops occurred in states where afrmative action has been eliminated or cutback. Conservatives have changed the rules which has discouraged minorities from applying to colleges. Conservatives will continue in their quest to eliminate all help to minorities who want to enter college, get a promotion, start a new business, etc. This is simple, where Conservatives have cutback or eliminated Afrmative Action and sometimes replaced it with some phony program, what have the results been? Are more whites attending college? Are fewer minorities attending college? Are fewer minorities being promoted? Are there fewer minority businesses being awarded contracts? We dont like to talk about afrmative action any more; we like to talk about diversity. Whatever terminology you use, we have a problem. If Conservatives think they can keep kicking minorities when they are down and get away with it, I have some news for you. Eventually, whites will be a minority in the U.S. and some of the rules you create today may come back to haunt you. In 1998 it was revealed that the Supreme Court has hired mostly white law clerks. Some justices were worse than others, almost every clerk hired by them was white. The lack of diversity is important because they screen most of the cases to be considered by the court and draft most of the rulings. What you have is virtually one race, white, working on and ruling on afrmative action.

Another interesting fact is that no American Indian has ever worked as a clerk on the Supreme Court. It would be funny, if it wasnt so pathetic. The original inhabitants of this country have never had a representative work as a clerk on the Court. In 1999 U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown and other female House members entered a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing to ask committee chairman Sen. Jesse Helms to allow hearings to be held on the U.N. Convention to Eliminate All Forms of Discrimination Against Women treaty. Helms had the women tossed out of the hearing. Jesse Helms also held-up Carol Mosley-Brauns (a black former Senator) nomination to be ambassador to New Zealand. When Mosley-Braun was a Senator, Helms was in a Capitol elevator with her. He sang Dixie and said he would continue until she cries. It still amazes me that some women and minorities vote for Conservative white males. During the Clinton administration Republicans, who controlled the senate, tried to block many of Clintons nominations from becoming federal judges. They were particularly tough on Hispanic candidates. Rep. Robert Menendez, D-N.J. said Hispanic-Americans take longer to get through the judicial nominating process than any other group. Why do some Hispanic-Americans vote for Conservatives? In 1957 nine black students tried to enter the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Arkansas National Guardsmen turned them away. President Eisenhower had to send in Army troops to escort the students into the school. This was one of many steps taken in America to end segregtion. Conservatives were absolutely positive they were right about slavery. Then, when that failed, they were absolutely

positive they were right about segregation. The Ku Klux Klan was a Conservative terrorist organization that attacked minorities. Conservatives fought against civil rights. Remember when Gov. George Wallace of Alabama vowed, Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever! As usual, he and other Conservatives were wrong on all counts. Gov. Wallace, to his credit, did reverse his views later, yet, people continue to believe in Conservative lies and evil ideas. Conservatives change what it is they are against as they are proven wrong from time to time, but how anyone can believe what they say is beyond comprehension. In 2000 an Ohio pastor refused to allow an interracial wedding in his church. Chastity Bumgardner, who is white and Henry Lawrence, who is black were going to be married in the Pleasant Valley Community Church. Bumgrdners brother had made the arragements with the pastor. However, the pastor cancelled the wedding when he found out that Lawrence was black. I guess some religious people do not believe in Diversity when it comes to marriage. This country should have a method to help the disadvantaged get a good education. Conservatives make sure the white people in the suburbs have an opportunity for a good education, so everyone else should demand that they have the same opportunity. You and your children will never get that opportunity by voting for Conservatives. We have a long way to go to achieve equality in America.
10 CONSERVATIVE FALSE INFORMATION

In 1994 the Seniors Coalition, a Conservative fundraising group sent out letters to Americans saying the Clinton Health Plan was going to take away their choice of doctors, force people off Medicare, etc. Of course, it scared people, some of who sent money to the Coalition. The problem was that the letter was not accurate. The Clinton plan actually added benets to Medicare. What the Coalition did was not illegal, but it is not right to mislead people. In 1994 Rush Limbaugh, a Conservative radio talk show host, attacked the school attended by the Clintons daughter Chelsea. Limbaugh said the school required students to write about Why I Feel Guilty Being White. There was one small problem with his report. It was not true. It never happened. Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) is an organization that has kept track of the false stories Limbaugh reports. It always amazed me when someone would quote me something that Rush Limbaugh had said as if it were fact. They actually believed he was reporting truthful news. Rush was entertaining them, saying what they wanted to hear, making lots of money and, at best, he was a clown. But he was a dangerous clown. Rush Limbaugh is not a news reporter. He, as do other Conservatives, repeats something someone tells him without regard to the truthfulness of this statement, especially if it hurts people he doesnt like. Conservatives do not investigate or check sources. They are parrots repeating things they have heard. The source, if any,

is irrelevant. They just have to say something bad about people they do not like. Conservatives take rumors and gossip, and by repeating them over and over, turn them into a twisted version of the truth. In 1994 the Rev. Jerry Falwell, the Conservative host of his TV show Old Time Gospel Hour, sold a videotape accusing President Clinton of various crimes including being involved in several deaths. There was no evidence to support any of the allegtions. The lack of evidence did not stop Falwell from promoting the video. In 1993 White House Counsel Vincent Foster committed suicide in a Virginia park. Rush Limbaugh repeated a story that Foster was murdered and his body was moved from an apartment to the park. The Rev. Pat Robertson also reported the rumor about Foster being murdered on his 700 Club TV show. In 1994 special prosecutor Robert Fiske concluded his investigation of Fosters death and reported it was a suicide. Other investigations were initiated however. Conservatives speculated that President Clinton and his wife Hillary had something to do with the death of Vincent Foster. The Vincent Foster investigations continued for years, and the rumors of his murder continued, also. U.S. Park Police said Fosters death was a suicide. A Senate committee concluded the death was a suicide. Finally, in 1997, Whitewater special prosecutor Kenneth Starr concluded that Foster committed suicide. Conservatives were wrong as usual. Foster was not murdered. Conservatives accuse individuals of almost anything without any proof and people actually believe them. I guess people assume an accusation is the same as a conviction. But, when you do not tell the truth it becomes a lie. G. Gordon Liddy, a Conservative radio talk show host, told his listeners to shoot the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco

and Firearms agents in the head because they wear bulletproof vests. Conservtive talk show hosts attacked the government, the Clinton administration and President Clinton. Conservative talk show hosts say they are not responsible for anything crazy their listeners do. They never take responsibility for anything. They claim its not their fault that some people actually believe their lies and distortions. These same talk show hosts attack TV, movies, music, etc., as being a bad inuence on children and adults, but when they say outrageous things, it has no inuence on anyone! That makes them the most irresponsible and evil group in the information business. In April, 1995 Rush Limbaugh quoted some negative comments about Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich and others. Limbaugh was upset that liberals had said such wicked things about Newt and others. Limbaugh got his information from Conservative Brent Bozells newsletter. If Limbaugh had bothered to read the newsletter he would have found the end of the newsletter contained a note stating it was an April Fools joke. Limbaugh admitted he was fooled, but he qualied his admission by saying Given some of the things liberals actually do say, its not too tough to believe they would say the things Bozell makes up. The logic here is unbelievable and twisted. They might have said this, therefore I do not have to check to see if it true, and I do not have to apologize! These sick and evil people can say anything they want about anybody. How can anyone believe anything they say? Yet, some people do believe everything they say and go around repeating it as gospel. People get hurt when these show hosts spread their lies and rumors. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, Rush Limbaugh attacked ABC anchor Peter Jennings for making insulting comments about President Bush. He based Jennings comments on an e-mail.

Rush did not check his source. As usual, Rush was wrong. Jennings never said what Rush reported on his talk show. Conservatives were happy when President Clintons affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky was exposed. The problem with Conservatives attacking people they do not like on a moral basis is that they are not all as perfect as they expect everyone else to be. You know the old sayings: If you live by the sword, you will die by the sword,. and People who live in glass houses should not throw rocks. When you tell people that they must be perfect, you better be perfect yourself or you will fall on your own sword. What Conservatives say about morals sounds good, but humans are not perfect and never will be. In 1998 Conservative Republican Rep. Dan Burton admitted that he had an extramarital relationship and fathered a child. Burton previously had called Clinton a scumbag. In 1998 right-wing Republican Rep. Helen Chenoweth confessed to having an affair when she was younger. Chenoweth had demanded that President Clinton should resign because of his reltionship with Monica Lewinsky. Also in 1998 House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry J. Hyde, a Republican, acknowledged that he had an affair with a married woman in the 1960s. He pointed out that it happened a long time ago and was not pertinent to performing his duties. I agree with Rep. Hyde. None of this should be relevant to doing a good job in Congress. Unfortunately, Conservatives Sit in moral judgment of liberals, and sometimes they hurt Conservatives who are not perfect in the process. In 1998 House Speaker-elect Bob Livingston, a Republican, who was going to replace Newt Gingrich confessed that he had affairs while he was married. Subsequently, Livingston resigned. Conservatives attack people they say are not morally perfect. When they get caught themselves, they say it is a

private matter that should stay private. They ask for forgiveness. They say it was something in the past and we should move on and leave this problem behind us. This is all true. Now, they should apply those same principles to the people they are attacking. But, of course, they will not. They will just keep on attacking like they always do. All this reminds me of McCarthyism. In the 1950s, Senator Joe McCarthy and his accomplices went after anyone who might be, or ever might have been, a communist. The dictionary denes McCarthyism as the use of indiscriminate, often unfounded, accusations, sensationalism, inquisitorial investigative methods, etc., ostensibly in the suppression of communism. Many innocent people were hurt before McCarthy was nally stopped, but his methods are still used by Conservatives today. They dont need proof. They just accuse someone of something and pronounce them guilty. It is PERFECT EVIL at its worst. In 2000 federal agents, following orders from Attorney General Janet Reno, took Elian Gonzalez from his Miami relatives and returned him to his father who eventually took Elian back to Cuba. The Miami relatives would not obey any court orders and refused to give up Elian, who survived at sea, but his mother died trying to reach the U.S. Republicans decided they would hold a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing to force Reno to defend her actions and those of her agents. Conservatives like to talk about law and order, but when the attorney general of a Democratic administration enforces the law, suddenly Conservatives are against the use of necessary force. Conservatives did not like the idea of Elian going back to Cuba, a communist country. They could care less that his father came to the U.S. to get his son. I wonder how they would feel if they went to another country and Conservatives in that country tried to stop them from geting their child back?

Congressional Republicans made various negative statements about Janet Reno and the federal agents. The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee delayed the hearing while he waited for documents from the Justice Department. Here we have Conservatives standing against enforcing the rule of law and against family values. How can anyone trust anything they say? By the way, when the Republicans found out that public opinion polls showed widespread support for Janet Reno and both her enforcement of the law and her support for parental rights, they decided to postpone the hearings indenitely. I guess, this time even the Conservatives didnt believe their own rhetoric enough to risk losing votes. Conservatives give you so much false information, it is easy to understand how some people fall for their lies. When I was much younger, even I believed them. I get mad at myself for falling for their rhetoric. That is one of the main reasons why I am writing this book.

Conservatives believe that jail is the answer to the drug problem. Put drug addicts in jail and the problem is solved. However, medical treatment for drug addicts works just the same as it does for any disease. Drug treatment is effective, has a chance of actually solving the problem and is cheaper than jail. Conservatives concentrate on attacking the drug supply. Stop the drug ow and you have solved the problem. It has never worked and it never will. You must reduce demand to have any affect on the drug problem. Education and treatment is the only way really win the war on drugs. Reducing demand also reduces crime. Drug addicts will always nd a way to get drugs and someone will be there to supply them. You must prevent people from becoming addicts and treat the people who do become addicts with medical treatment. Another benet of drug treatment is a reduction in the spreading of diseases such as AIDS, hepatitus, etc. Addicts have a high risk of catching and spreading diseases. Why doesnt the public understand that drug treatment can be very effective? Conservative propaganda tells the public that jail is the best way to deal with sick people. Lock them up and throw away the key, they say. Mandatory minimum sentences will solve the drug problem. Firsttime offenders must go to jail. All drugs are equally dangerous and deserve stiff sentences. And so on. It all sounds good, but it does not work. I dont think that there has ever been a sick person that got better in jail without medical

treatment, and the more treatment they received, the better they got. States must allow judges to judge. Lifer laws and mandatory miniumum sentences, that Conservatives love, take away the ability of judges to determine sentences. There is a difference between a drug kingpin and a rst-time offender. Too many people are in jail for too long. These mandatory sentences also eliminate the parole system which is there to judge if inmates have changed for the better and should be released. It is crazy to let murderers go free while others stay in jail for a lesser drug offense, due to mandatory sentences and jail overcrowding. Tim Allen who starred in TVs Home Improvement was involved in cocaine deals when he was a college grad. He was sentenced to three years in jail. Tim was lucky he had a judge who was allowed to judge. Conservatives do more harm than good when they go overboard with harsh punishments and eliminate the role of judges. To me, it is un-American to have no judicial judgment in the justice system. That makes us no better than a third-world country, and that should not be acceptable to the American people. In 1998 12-year-old Christine Rhodes shared her inhaler with another child who had an asthma attack on a school bus. Both of their mothers thought Christine was a hero. However, the Mount Airy, Maryland, Middle School principal had to record a drug infraction on Christines records. The principal choose not to suspend Christine from school. The principal was lucky to have any discretionary power at all. Many schools have a zero tolerance policy now, which leaves no discretion at all, just like mandatory minimum sentences. To me, zero tolerance equals zero intelligence. You dont think Conservatives are dangerous? Here we have Conservative rules that teach our children not to

help others because it will get them in trouble with authorities. The answer is to put reason, intelligence and discretion back into the rules. Former rst lady Betty Ford believes that money spent on drug treatment is very important. The Betty Ford Clinic treats people with substance abuse problems. In 1994 she was not happy with congressional Republicans who opposed spending money on subtance abuse treatment. She had hoped that by then Republicans were aware of the need for and the benets of treatment. Betty Ford is asking a lot by expecting Conservatives to be educated or possess intelligence. To many people who face severe illness or severe pain the ability to manage their pain and suffering requires the medical use of marijuana. Just the fact that they can eat when they suffer from cancer, AIDS, etc. can make the difference between life and death. People who suffer from hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, eye disease, chronic pain, Crohns disease, terminal illnesses, etc. all seek relief from pain. The medical use of marijuana gives these people a chance at a normal life. States where voters have approved the medical use of marijuana are Alaska, Arizona, California, Maine, Oregon and Washington. The federal government is challenging these laws. Conservatives predict that drug use will increase if we allow the use of marijuana for medical purposes. For once, they are correct, sort of. A lot of sick people will use it and feel better, live better and die better. You need a heart to understand how important and effective marijuana is for these people, but Conservatives have rules and dire predictions, not hearts. In 2000 Hawaii became the rst state where the legislature approved the medical use of marijuana. People must get a doctors approval and register with the Department of Public Safety.

Why dont other states follow Hawaii and help sick people? Because their legislatures are afraid of Conservatives attacking them as being soft on drugs. Also, the drug companies who sell expensive medicine to control pain have lobbyists who inuence legislators. Do you think the fact that marijuana is very easy to grow, cultivate and use, and could leave the drug companies with expensive drugs it cannot sell might have something to do with it? Drug companies claim that they need to make huge prots to have the money to develop new drugs. Why are drugs cheaper in other countries, like Canada? Canada allows the use of medical marijuana. Interesting, isnt it? In 1994 Joycelyn Elders was red as surgeon general for saying things that upset many Conservatives. One of the things she said that was controversial, was that we could study decriminalization of drugs which might reduce crime and violence in America. Switzerland has liberal drug policies. One of them is the state distribution of heroin to drug addicts. Doctors administer heroin to addicts. Drug therapy is also stressed. The Swiss have seen a drop in crime and disease, an increase in addicts holding jobs and living in steady housing, and a savings of taxpayers money. In 1999 the House convened a hearing on The Pros and Cons of Drug Legalization, Decriminalization and Harm Reduction. Republicans were worried that the approval of medical use of marijuana could lead to the legalization of drugs. Some were unhappy that the hearing was even being held. Republican Rep. Mark Souder said, We do not have hearings called The Pros and Cons of Rape. Conservatives use false analogies to backup their positions. The Pros and Cons of Rape is a false analogy because there are no pros about rape. The Swiss have proven there are pros in legalizing drugs. Conservatives do not like anyone to talk about or study the legalization of drugs because they are afraid of the results, but you will

never know the truth if you do not study what other countries are doing to control drug abusers. Will legalizing some or all drugs work? I dont know. You dont know. No one in America knows, because Conservatives make sure no politician will make a serious effort to nd out. If they do, they will be labeled as soft on crime. Crazy, isnt it? Prohibition did not work with alcohol, and it is not working with drugs. Other possibilities should be explored. There will always be a demand for drugs, just like alcohol. You cant stop it, so you must control it. The current methods of control are very protable for drug dealers. You must reduce demand and/or control production and distribution, just as we do with alcohol. In 1994 Congress gave law enforcement agencies a new law that gave forfeited assets from drug dealers to the various federal, state and local agencies. They used civil forfeiture laws to go after assets of drug kingpins. If they could not put the kingpins in jail, due to the lack of evidence to convict them of a crime, at least they could take away their money and other assets. Sounds like a good idea, doesnt it? Billions of dollars and aseets have been seized by the various agencies. Thousands of people have had money, property and other assets seized. Unfortunately, very few drug kingpins have been affected. The money and assets have been conscated from average people. Once law enforcement agencies found out they could get money and assets from average citizens, they found ways to get them. You have rights, but your property has no rights. You had to prove your property had not been used in a crime. You may have been innocent of a crime, but your property was guilty until you proved it was innocent. Sounds crazy, doesnt it? A tip from an anonymous criminal gave police the power to take your property. Informants receive a percentage of the value of the conscated assets. Since the property is assumed guilty, you have no right to a public defender.

People have lost their houses because of anonymous informants or sometimes because their child or grandchild was involved with drugs in their homes. People who have carried large sums of cash, legally, have had their money conscated at airports and other places. Police have claimed the money could be used to buy drugs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Ohta had seized millions in property, including the home of an elderly couple whose grandson was suspected of selling drugs. However, when Ohtas son was arrested for selling drugs from her house, it was not seized. The law must not apply to those in power. Tina Bennis had her old car taken from her by the police because her husband got caught using the car to pickup a prostitute. In 1996 the Supreme Court upheld the seizure of the car, with no compensation paid to Tina. This reinforced the forfeiture statutes. The TV show, Dateline, on January 3, 1997, showed Louisiana Police lying during a trafc stop. The police stopped the Dateline vehicle and said had violated trafc laws. But the Dateline video clearly showed they were lying. Dateline also interviewed other victims who talked about being pulled over under a similar pretext, and some had their cars conscated. They had to hire a lawyer to get their cars back. One victim got her car back, but had to sell it to pay her lawyers fees. Guess what an investigation found when they checked to see what happened to the seized money? It was not used to ght crime. It was used to buy food and other items from Wal-Mart and other stores. People have also had their boats, planes, land, etc. taken from them. They have never been convicted of a crime. Many times they have not even been charged. Once the police had their money or assets, they had what they wanted. People have had their property damaged during searches. Boats have been torn apart by drug agents. Then the agents leave the boat as is. There have been many horror stories of police abuse.

George Gerhrdt of Fort Lauderdale died of cncer. His beneciary moved into his house. An anonymous prison informat said Gerhardt was involved in a drug transaction at his house. Federal Marshals seized the house from the beneciary. In 2000 congress passed legislation which gave the average person some relief from civil forfeiture laws. Instead of the government seizing your property by just showing probable cause they now must show a clear preponderance of evidence that your property was used in a crime. The key word is evidence. The police should have some evidence to seize your property. President Clinton signed the bill into law on April 25, 2000. The problem is this: that power never should have been given to the police by Conservatives to ght their war on drugs. The 2001 counterterrorism bill gives law enforcement agencies broad powers to seize assets again. The police are supposed to seize assets of terrorists. But, if the police abuse the law as they did with the war on drugs, the average person could windup losing his property. Did you know that it was so easy for the police to take everything you own and worked for your entire life without any proof of wrongdoing? Conservatives, once again, have gotten you to give up a little more freedom. It sounded like a good idea: give up some freedom to get the drug lords or terrorists. But when you give the police that kind of power and they get to keep the money, you just know some police are going to abuse the power. They are only human, not perfect. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Conservatives got you to do what no army from any other country could force you to dogive away some of your rights. You dont think they are dangerous? Can you imagine losing your property based solely on what a criminal said that you did or knew about? President Reagan thought it was a good idea. It does makes a difference who you vote for!

In 1998, at a congressional House Commerce Committee hearing, tobacco executives nally admitted that nicotine is addictive and is a health hazard. Tobacco industry internal documents have been uncovered during various lawsuits. The tobacco companies knew decades ago that not only was nicotine a very potent drug with physiological and physical effects, but that they could control the potency of the drug. They used different methods to increase the nicotine kick. The companies knew nicotine was a poison that killed people. But they were only interested in how they could improve their drug delivery systemcigarettes in order to increase prots. The faster they could deliver the drug to the brain the more dependent the smoker (addict) became on cigarettes. Some companies have admitted to the dangers of smoking to shield themselves from future lawsuits. This way smokers can not claim that they did not know that smoking was dangerous to their health. The companies now concede that cigarette smoking can cause cancer, emphysema, heart problems, etc. Many people believe that smoking cigars is safer than smoking cigarettes. Scientic evidence shows cigars are also very dangerous. Cigar smoking can cause mouth, throat and lung cancer, as well as other diseases. While there has been a decrease in adult smokers (some have died), the country has seen an increase in teenage smokers. The Truth Campaign became a highly effective anti-smoking ad campaign using radio and television

ads aimed at teenagers. In 2000 Florida Republicans slashed the campaigns budget which caused a reduction in employees and ads. Most people now know of the deadly consequences of smoking and many non-smokers can not understand why anyone would chose to smoke. Why is it so hard for everyone to understand why people smoke, knowing how dangerous it is? Tobacco has nicotine in it, an addictive drug. When you become an addict as a teenager, it is very hard to quit! One thing I never thought about until I saw it on TV news was how you could get kids hooked on tobacco by letting them steal cigarettes. Since kids cannot buy cigarettes legally, one way to get the cigarettes in their hands is by making it easy for them to steal them. Tobacco companies paid a premium if stores would put cigarette displays out front on the counter where it was easy to steal them. Of course, the tobacco companies deny that is the reason they pay extra to have the displays out front but, it does work out very well for them because they get new addicts hooked on their drug, sometimes for life, however short it might be. And they need new addicts, because a lot of the current ones are dying. It is the same method illegal drug dealers use to hook their addictsgive them free drugs, then charge a lot later when theyre hooked. What little the companies lose in stolen cigarettes is easily made up later in legal sales. You would think that the government would make it illegal to put cigarettes out front. They should be behind the counter where no child can get them. But the tobacco companies have used lobbyists and campaign contributions to inuence politicians. States sued the Tobacco companies and in 1998 won billions of dollars and other concessions from the companies. One of the concessions was that Tobacco companies were to stop targeting cigarette ads at teenagers. The Tobacco companies did cut their billboard ads, but then they

turned around and increased their advertising in magazines, especially youth-oriented magazines. The Tobacco companies need new addicts because the old one are dying. Conservative politicans, especilly from the South, have always protected the tobacco industry and still do so today. That is why the Republicans in Washington will not stop the Tobacco companies from targeting kids. In 2000 the Supreme Court ruled that the government did not have the authority to regulate tobacco, as it does with other durgs. This means that rules issued by the Food and Drug Administration are now unenforceable. The court said the Congress never authorized the FDA to regulate tobacco. President Clinton asked the Congress to pass legislation giving the FDA the power to regulate tobacco and stop the Tobacco companies from targeting and selling cigarettes to children. One example is restricting minors access to cigarette vending-machines. The Republicans in control of Congress are not likely to offend the Tobacco companies by passing new laws and risk losing campaign contributions, unless the Tobacco companies ask Congress to pass the laws. Conservatives will tell you that people who smoke know that tobacco is dangerous, so it is their fault if smoking harms their health. What Conservatives leave out is that nicotine is an addictive drug, like cocaine and heroin. Republicans do not want to give the FDA the power to regulate nicotine, yet Conservatives are always tough on other drugs, (like cocaine and heroin). When it comes to tobacco, they change their tune. Why? Conservatives use the excuse that tobacco is a legal drug. Okay, who makes it legal? Conservatives make it legal. Conservatives are only against certain drugsthe ones they dont get campaign contributions for defending. Conservatives like tobacco money and dance

around the truth about tobaccoit is an addictive drug dispenser designed to make kids nicotine addicts. If the Tobacco companies decide that it would be better for them if the FDA regulated tobacco, then they will ask their friends in Washington to pass a law. This way the companies would have some input on how the law is written and would not have to worry about different and uncontrolled laws issued by various state legislatures.
13 POLICE AND JAILS

The majority of police try to do a good job, and it is a dangerous job. They are not perfect. Their performance depends a lot on the training they receive and the laws they are given to enforce. We have all read about car chases in newspapers or seen car chases on TV. For years, police chased adults, but most often kids, for trafc offenses. I am not talking here about the police chasing someone who has just committed a robbery. I am talking about trafc violations. Sometimes, the chase ended in a car crash, at times involving other vehicles and the deaths of innocent people. In effect, people received the death penalty for a trafc violation. Relatives led law suits against the police. The police, to their credit, changed the rules of pursuit. They would stop the chase after a short period of time if the person continued to speed. Then the Supreme Court, in effect, changed the rules again. In 1998 the Supreme Court ruled that police ofcers can not be sued by people who are hurt or by relatives of those killed during police car chases unless the police actions shock the conscience. State legislatures are allowed to pass laws that give victims the right to sue the police. Since most legislatures these days are Conservative, good luck on getting any help from them! Most people probably do not care about this issue until it is their kid lying there dead. By then, of course, it is too late. Why do women vote for Conservatives? You would think they would want to protect their children from Conservative lawmakers.

During one police chase I watched on TV, the police boxed in the car, in a parking lot, but the driver continued to try and get away. The driver was not a bank robber or a killer, and he did not have a gun. The police surrounded the vehicle, then shot the driver him many times, killing him. The police said the vehicle was a weapon. I thought, Was that their only choiceshooting him many times? In 2000 St. Louis police cornered Earl Murray and Ronald Beasley, who were in a car driven by Murray, using two police cars. Murray had just been involved in a drug deal. Beasley was in the car because he had asked Murray for a ride. Murray tried to drive through the police cars. The police red their guns many times, killing both men. Neither man was armed. Why did they shoot the unarmed passenger? In 2000 Philadelphia police chased Thomas Jones who was involved in a carjacking. Jones crashed the car and then stole a police car. When police nally caught Jones, they beat and kicked Jones unmercifully. Unfortunately for the police, a TV news helicopter recorded the beating which was shown on TV. In 2000 Nebraska police chased George Bibins who was driving a stolen Jeep. Bibins, who was unarmed, crashed the Jeep. A police ofcer came over to the Jeep and shot Bibins to death. Police have a lot of adrenaline owing when they are involved in a car chase. If they have not received any training, or inadequate training, on how to control their emotions and their tempers, they are going to make bad decisions and people can be hurt or killed. This training needs to be on a continuing basis. How to calm down quickly is critical and needs to be steadily reinforced. It is the responsibility of their supervisors to provide this training, and it is the responsibility of politicians to provide the money to pay for the training. Conservatives, however do not like spending

money on things like training. They prefer to spend money on guns. As to the justication of shooting unarmed people in a vehicle, because the vehicle can be weapon, we need to have certain rules established: 1. Under no circumstances should a police ofcer ever stand in front of a vehicle. It may look like a great thing to do in the movies, but it is a dumb idea in real life. It can get the police ofcer, the driver or the passenger killed. 2. Under no circumstances should a police ofcer ever stand behind a vehicle when it is backing up. 3. Police ofcers should stand to the side of a vehicle at all times. 4. Every police car should carry rods with spikes in them that can be thrown in front or behind a vehicle to blow out the tires. A vehicle will not go very fast or very far without tires. 5. If a police ofcer has an urge to shoot something, they should shoot out the tires. If they can shoot the driver and the passenger with such accuracy that they can kill them, they certainly can shoot out the tires instead. 6. Seek any alternative to killing the driver and the passenger. Try boxing the car in with several police cars. Again, the main problem is a lack of proper training. We all know how hard it is to do a job right without the proper support from supervisors. Imagine how hard your job would be if you were carrying a gun and had to make life or death decisions under stress. A rule that used to be important to police was that before you burst into someones home, you would investigate to see if they were committing a crime. The rules have

changed. The new rule is that an informant tells you someone is a criminal, so you break down their door and point guns at them. This gets people killed, sometimes by shooting at the police or trying to run away, not knowing they are police. After all, why would you believe it was the police breaking in? You are not a criminal. Sometimes, the victim dies of a heart attack. I could list many examples, but one will illustrate the problem clearly enough. In 1994 Boston police, on a tip from an unidentied informant, burst into the apartment of retired Minister Accelyne Williams looking for drugs and guns. Police hancuffed Williams. Williams died of heart failure minutes after the raid. Nothing was found in Williams apartment. The informant and the police were wrong. Here we have Conservatives getting tough on crime and getting you to give up a little of your rights again. How can police not investigate to see if the information from the informant is true or not? It does not take a lot of effort to determine if someone is selling drugs. Just observe them. This was not an isolated case. It has happened many times, but it should never happen. Police should always complete a simple, basic investigation before they break down anyones door. This is a failure of leadership, rules of proper procedure, and laws. Did you know that in 2001 the Supreme Court ruled that the police can arrest you for a minor trafc offense. Police can pull you over for speeding, not wearing your seat belt, making an improper turn, changing lanes improperly, or anything, handcuff you and take you to jail. You have no recourse. Dont worry, you are just losing a small right of freedom from police abuse. The police who stormed the Attica prison in 1971 could have used some training on when and who to shoot. Dr. John Edland, who was the Monroe County, New York medical examiner, conducted autopsies on the inmates and hostages killed when police retook the prison from the

inmates. Everyone, including all the hostages, were shot and killed by the police. None of the hostages had died of stab wounds or were mutilated as rst reported. Two other medical examiners agreed with Dr. Edland. During the assault on Attica, it was as if the police had no training or rules. They just shot everybody, including every hostage that died. The police had a lot of adrenaline owing, and then went crazy. No one in charge could control them. Then, ofcials created lies to cover up the truth. The 2001 movie The Killing Yard, starring Alan Alda as a lawyer, will show you what the government did during and after the police assault on Attica prison. Conservatives thought that Boot Camps for children would help solve the crime problem. In 1999 a 14-year-old girl in a South Dakota boot camp collapsed during a run. The staff left her lying there. Gina Score died of heat stroke. In 2001 Anthony Haynes, a 14-year-old boy in a Arizona boot camp died. There were allegations of abuse. There have been other deaths, at various boot camps, in many states. So, Conservatives get tough on crime and children, in effect, receive the death penalty for minor offenses. In 1999 Maryland suspended their boot camp program. Guards were reported to have abused and assaulted juveniles at the camps. States have laws against child abuse and child endangerment. Those regulations should have been enforced at every boot camp. Conservatives let authorities have too much power and control over these children. Conservatives, as usual, took their freedom and rights away. It is hard to believe that in the United States, Conservatives can get people to believe in these ideas and allow them to be implemented. It is evil to allow children to be abused, and Americans should be ashamed of themselves for allowing it to happen.

Some states brought back chain gangs as a method of punishment, but that did not last either. The states discontinued them for nancial and other reasons. They just did not work as predicted by Conservatives. Due to harsher sentencing, the U.S. prison population is growing. It can be argued that this is both a good thing and a bad thing at the same time. Some say it is good to put criminals away for a long time. Others say that it is a failure of our society that so many people are in jail. One problem that we have is that the prison population is getting older. U.S. prisons have thousands of older inmates who are frail, sick and can not defend themselves against younger inmates. This group will continue to grow because of the longer sentences. Conservatives will tell you that every prisoner must stay in jail for as long as possible, but it is crazy to keep an old, frail person in jail due to mandatory sentencing and have to release a younger, more dangerous criminal due to a lack of space. Research should be done to see when the older inmates are no longer a threat, what is the appropriate sort of facility to keep them housed in, and what alternatives are available or can be created. In 1999 California admitted that children under the age of 18 were in prisons with adult inmates. How many other states are doing the same thing? If any children in adult prisons are abused or raped, what you have are Conservatives effectively promoting the abuse and rape of children. You must not allow Conservatives to hurt children just to prove they are tough on crime. Are prisons and local jails full in your state? Is there no place to put new prisoners? Are criminals released because there is not enough cells? Conservatives want to put more people in jail for longer terms, but they will not spend the money necessary to build new prisons. This causes dangerous criminals to be relesed early, as newer and possibly less dangerous criminals enter the system.

Conservatives do not like to spend money on educating prisoners, but there are two choices. You can have an uneducated criminal get out of jail and return to crime, where he rapes your daughter, kills your relative, breaks into your house, robs a bank, steals your car, etc., or you can have an educated prisoner get out of jail and go to work. Conservatives prefer the uneducated prisoner. I prefer the educated prisoner. Conservatives have ideas that sound good at rst, but when you analyze the results, their ideas are crazy. Conservatives like to point out that prisoners should not get a college education when your child cannot get a college education. That sounds good, doesnt it? What they fail to say is that everyone who is qualied to go to college in the United States should be able to go. Money should not be the determining factor for deciding if a person goes to college or not. If an American, free or prisoner, is qualied to go to college, they should be able to go, with no exceptions. The U.S. should be the leader in all the world when it comes to education.
14 CONCENTRATION CAMPS
Some Conservatives say that the Holocaust never happened. They say that Nazi Germanys extermination of Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals never happened. They say either that the concentration camps never existed, or if they did exist, they did not kill millions of people. If you or anyone you know has any doubts about whether the Holocaust happened, just go to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. It is a moving experience. Of course, you might think, our government and our people would never allow concentration camps to exist in the U.S., but we did! Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the war hysteria of the early 1940s led to the forced internment of approximately 110,000 West Coast Japanese, about 70,000 of whom were U.S. Citizens, in concentration camps within the United States. They were placed in 10 relocation centers, where some were conned for up to 4 years. We defeated the Nazis and executed some of them because of what they did in the concentration camps, but Conservatives got us to create our own concentration camps. They convinced us to take away the civil liberties and constitutional rights of U.S. Citizens. They did it once, and they could do it again if you put them in charge of the country. And when they do it, they will tell you it is for the good of the country. Just trust themthey are not dangerous to the freedoms in this country. But they are the only ones who can talk us into giving those freedoms up.

15 ASSISTED SUICIDE
Conservatives do not like the idea of doctor-assisted suicide. In 1997 the Supreme Court upheld state statutes that forbid physican-assisted suicide. However, the court left room for state legislatures or voter referendums to pass laws allowing doctors to ease pain and even administer lethal doses of drugs. Chronic pain patients often consider suicide because they are in such severe pain. You would think that doctors would give them enough painkillers to make life bearable, but Conservatives with their war on drugs have made physicians apprehensive when prescribing drugs. The Drug Enforcement Agency will investigate doctors and pharmacists if they believe too much medicine has been given by them to patients. The DEA suggests that the patient must be an addict and the doctor is their drug dealer. Doctors and pharmacists are afraid they will lose their licenses, so Conservatives create the situation where people choose suicide because they cant get enough pain medicine, and then make it illegal for physicians to help them die. Conservatives make doctors powerless to help their patients. In 1997 the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of Oregons doctor-assisted suicide law. The court wanted states to decide if they will allow doctor-assisted suicide or not. The Oregon law was a result of a voter referendum. In 1998 a woman dying of carcer became the rst person to die, after a doctor prescribed a lethal dose of drugs, under Oregons Death With Dignity Act.

Around 14 other people took advantage of Oregons doctor-assisted suicide law in 1998. The terminally ill patients died peacefully. Not everyone who is terminally ill wants to commit suicide. Many want to live as long as possible. But, it is reasuring to know that you have the choice if you decide to end your suffering. In 2001 the Netherlands became the rst country to legalize doctor-assisted euthanasia. Overpopulation and an aging population will put pressure on more countries to allow terminally ill people the ability to choose when and how they will die. Conservatives always talk about freedom, but what they really want is for you to do what they think is right. What you think is irrelevant to them. They do not want you to have freedom of choice, because you might chose something they dont like. If I am terminally ill, they should have no right to tell me what I can and cannot do with my life. That is a decision between me, my doctor and my family. Conservatives should keep their noses on their faces and out of other peoples lives. Women understand pain better than men, because they give birth. Women should elect more women to ofce. Then, maybe we would have better laws. If assisted suicide works in Oregon, it can work in the rest of the U.S.
16 CHILD ABUSE AND WITCH HUNTS

It happens all too often. A single mom leaves her child home and goes to work to pay the rent and feed her family. She has been unable to nd any affordable private childcare, and the waiting list for low-cost day care is very long. The authorities nd her child home alone. They arrested the mother and charge her with child abuse. Conservatives demand that she be punished. If only she had had access to affordable childcare this never would have happened. Now, guess who likes to cut taxes and doesnt want to spend money on social programsConservatives. Conservatives create the problem, then they want to punish the people who are not perfect, who either do not have a husband or have a jerk for a husband. Women need to elect women to ofce who understand this problem and will do something to solve it. Conservatives do not solve problems, they create them. You know this story: a man beats his child and the child dies. His wife stands by and does not stop him or call the police. When the man is charged with child abuse and murder, Conservatives are mad at the woman for not doing anything to stop the man, so they also charge her with child abuse. Often, there are other children in the family. They are given to social workers while the parents are in jail. If the mother does get out of jail, she is not allowed to see her surviving children or must endure supervised visitation. Conservatives want her to be punished.

The reality of this situation is the probability that if the man has beaten his child, he has beaten his wife, also. He also probably either beat his other children or threatened to beat them if the wife did not do whatever he said, including keeping quiet about the beatings. It is not easy for a woman to leave her husband or turn him in to authorities. He is probably the one who is supporting the family, and she is afraid of losing the family income. Also, when you have been beaten or threatened over a period of time, you change. You lose the ability to make decisions on your own. You dare not contradict the abuser from fear of the consequences. Conservatives say that the man is the head of the household, and the female must obey him. Then, when she does obey him, Conservatives say she was wrong for obeying him. Crazy, isnt it? Women should elect women to ofce who would understand this problem and adjust the laws accordingly. In 1998 Florida passed a law to toughen the childwelfare system. A child, Kayla McKean, had been beaten to death by her stepfather despite calls by several people to the child-abuse agency. The law was named after Kayla. Kaylas grandfather asked to have her name removed from the law. The Department of Children and Families went to the opposite extreme. The agency started to take children from their parents based on an accusation, before they completed an investigation. Because the agency was taking so many children and the state did not adequately fund the agency, children had to be crowded into foster homes, motel room, ofces, or anyplace they could nd oor space. Conservatives like to pass laws showing they are tough on crime. but they will not give agencies enough money or workers to do the job right. Some of these charges are false, but since the agency does not have enough resources to

investigate properly, families are kept apart for long periods of time even though no actual abuse has occurred. This does not help children; it hurts children. We must provide adequate funding for agencies who are supposed to help children. People can be induced to remember events that never happened. While some adults can be convinced the false implanted memories really happened, children are easily led into believing something false is reality. Researchers have performed many experiments that show how simple it is to get adults and children to believe in false memories. In fact, even when the subjects are told later that the new memory is false, they will not believe that it is not absolutely true. Your memory can play tricks on you. The HBO Pictures movie, IndictmentThe McMartin Trial, was the best movie made on one of the many child abuse witch hunt cases of the 1980s. It is a must see movie. Every high school student should see this movie to understand how the justice system can be corrupted. In 1983 Virginia McMartin, her dughter, Peggy McMartin Buckey, her grandson Ray Buckey and other employees of the McMartin Preschool were charged with child molestation. They were all arrested. The trial lasted until 1990 with no convictions. Some were set free earlier than others as the charges were proved false. Ray Buckey had to endure two trials before he was set free in 1990. The prosecution withheld evidence from the defense. Interviewers planted false memories in the childrens minds. Prosecutors and police created a climate of fear. As I watched the movie, I could not believe that this could happen in our country. But when hysteria sets in and a witch hunt mentality takes over, anything can happen. The children were brainwashed into believing things that never happened. The allegations were impossible: pornographic videotapes that could not be found, animals killed,

but no remains were found; rape in a car wash; tunnels that did not exist; airplane rides that never happened; rape in a market; rape in a church; bodies dug up from cemeteries, etc. The school was on a busy street. It was wide open, with windows anyone could see into. Anyone could walk in at any time. The only rape that occurred was by the system against the children and their parents. One of the biggest lies was that the children could not have made these things up. Of course, in a way, it was truethe ideas were implanted in their brains by the interviewers, which corrupted their testimony. Good Conservatives protected our children by creating a witch hunt. Then, good Conservatives all across this country started to nd child abusers everywhere. The witch hunt spread across the country like a plague. In 1995 scores of people were accused of child abuse in Wenatchee, Washington. Many people were tried and some were convicted. The primary accusor was a foster child of a police detective. She was a troubled child who accused so many people that some people in the community started to question the accusations. When a minister questioned the witch hunt tactics being perpetrated on innocent people, both he and his wife were soon charged with molesting children in their church. They were tried and found not guilty. The accusations of a child was all that was required to have children taken from their homes and have parents arrested. Conservatives just cant believe that a child would make up stories about abuse. But children like to please adults. The moment a child knows that if they say something bad about someone, an adult they look up to will be pleased and the child will become an important person, the child will say and continue to say things that will make that adult

happy, no matter how crazy the accusations. There are various techniques that an adult can use to get a child to say anything they want them to say. It can be as simple as an adult asking a question and showing disapproval when the child answers that nothing happened. Then, when the adult asks the question again and the child says that, yes, there was abuse, the adult shows approval. The child learns quickly how to please the adultjust accuse scores of people of abuse! The child tries to be perfect, and, indeed, becomes perfectPERFECT EVIL. In the 1980s seven people were charged with molesting children at the Little Rascals Day Care Center in North Carolina. Two were sentenced to life in prison. In 1995 an appeals court reversed the convictions. Other cases where there has been no real evidence, only the hysteria of witch hunts have also collapsed, such as the Margaret Kelly Michaels case in New Jersey. Many innocent people have been hurt by these witch hunts. We must be on guard against false claims of abuse. I know it may not be easy to tell the difference between real accusations and false ones, but you must look beyond the childs accusation. Who performed the investigation? Were the interviews recorded on video? Were the accusations so wild that they cannot stand up to close scrutiny? Is there any other evidence besides the childs testimony? Was there a real investigation, or did everyone just become hysterical?
17 PORNOGRAPHY AND VIOLENCE

When most people think of the word pornography, they think about sex or nudity. Conservatives will tell you that sex and nudity are terrible things that must be avoided at all costs unless you are married, and maybe not even then. A lot of married people in the U.S. dont have sex very often, and some dont have it at all. Americans have big hang-ups about sex and nudity because they are taught as children that sex and nudity are shameful things. Europeans dont have these hang-ups. They think we are crazy. We are! When I think about pornography, I think of things that are truly obscene. Which of the following is pornographic? 1. A movie with sex in it, or a movie that shows a teenager being murdered violently? 2. A picture of a naked child, or a picture of a child going to school in a bulletproof jacket and carrying a bulletproof book bag? 3. A streaker running naked on an athletic eld, or athletes ghting at athletic events? 4. A streaker running naked, or parents ghting at their childrens athletic events, sometimes killing each other? 5. A movie with naked people in it, or a TV trashtalk show, where sometimes a guest will kill another guest after the show has been aired? 6. A picture of people having sex, or a picture of the dead college students shot by the National Guard at Kent State in 1970?

7. A picture on the internet of a naked person, or instructions on the internet on how to build a bomb? I could continue, but you get the idea. I dont have a big problem with nudity or sex, but I do have a problem with real pornography. The Nazis concentration camps and gas chambers were the most pornographic episode in history. Conservatives pass laws or try to pass laws banning nude, semi-nude, or topless sunbathing at beaches or anywhere else. They try to ban nude or topless dancing. Conservatives have even tried to ban women from nursing their babies in public. Europeans can not understand why Americans have such a problem with nudity. They do not think nudity is a big deal. Europeans think it is fashionable to go topless at beaches. Remember when nudity was banned in movies? Conservatives like to attack nudity. It is an easy target and people believe they are going after something that is supposed to be bad. But nudity isnt a real problem, except in the minds of Conservatives. Men can go topless. I have seen some heavy men who have bigger breasts than some women, but since men make the laws, I dont think they will ban themselves from going topless. In 1996 Conservative Republicans proposed a ban on the sale of Playboy, Penthouse, explicit videos, etc. on military bases. I guess soldiers do not have First Amendment rights. This would be laughable if Conservatives werent taking up the governments time and resources. Adults can make up their own minds on what they want to see or not see. They dont need Conservatives to tell them. We ask these soldiers to ght and die for this country, but some people want to take away their freedom of choice to see

what they want to see. What are they ghting for if not freedom of choice? Conservatives are always trying to ban some work of art or another because they say it is pornographic. Their problem is that they do not understand art. Then again, Conservatives are not the brightest people in the world. Art is way over their heads. Unless the art is like a picture from a camera, they cannot fathom what it is about. Usually, this attempt at censorship backres on them. When they try to ban it, the art gets a lot of attention and more people come to see it than would otherwise. So, they actually help the artist and the art in a strange sort of way. Americans do not understand what real pornography is. We are told it is sex and nudity. We are told as children that sex and nudity are bad things and many of us grow up believing it. Then, when we get married, we are told sex is okay, but nudity is still bad. Its no wonder that Americans have so many hang-ups about sex and nudity. We are more tolerant of violence than we are of sex and nudity. We have everything mixed up in our heads, and we cant get it straightened out. If Americans could acccept sex and nudity as something normal and natural, as other people from other countries do, maybe we wouldnt be so violent. We need to reject violence and learn to accept safe sex and love as the most natural things on earth. Conservatives are no help in this area. They create the problem, and their only solutions are censorship and putting people in jail for a problem that shouldnt even exist.
18 PROSTITUTION
Conservatives think that by making prostitution illegal they have solved the problem, but all they have done is made the problem worse and hurt a lot of people. Prostitution has always existed, and will always exist. It cannot be controlled just by making it illegal. Prohibition does not work. The police have to take resources away from solving and preventing other types of crimes to go after prostitutes and their customers. If it was legal throughout the country, as it is in Nevada, the police would not waste ofcers and time on prostitution. This misuse of resources costs taxpayers money. If prostitution were legal, regulated, taxed and controlled: 1. there would be a reduction in AIDS cases and other diseases, because the use of condoms would be mandatory. 2. we would eliminate the beating and murder of prostitutes. 3. there could be mandatory drug rehabilitation programs for the prostitutes. 4. customers would not be arrested. 5. neighborhoods would be safer, because the crime that surrounds prostitution would be eliminated. 6. pimps would be eliminated. 7. prostitutes could keep enough of their earnings to get away from prostitution eventually. 8. prostitutes could contribute to and be entitled to social security.

9. communities would receive additional tax dollars, which would reduce taxes for everyone. 10. there would be more space available for violent criminals in our jails. 11. child prostitution would be reduced. There are many benets to legalization, and virtually no negatives. If it works in Nevada and in other countries like the Netherlands and Germany, it can work anywhere in the U.S. Conservatives hate this kind of intelligent proposal. They dont even like the idea of studying it. They say prostitution is evil and must be illegal. They need bad people so they can be the good people. They cant stand the idea that a person may not be as bad as they say they are. Conservatives are the real evil in our society.
19 JUVENILE CRIME
Conservatives try to solve the juvenile crime problem by charging kids as adults in our courts. They try to solve the problem after the crime has been committed, but this does not solve the problem. It does not even address the problem. Putting kids in jail where they can learn new crime skills from hardened criminals just creates new and better criminals. Having children in jails is not an accomplishment; it is a failure of our society. Solving the crime problem requires solutions other than putting kids in jail. Midnight basketball leagues have been successful all over the country. They keep kids off of the streets and out of trouble. Conservatives do not like to fund programs that prevent crime. In the mid 1990s Boston had a dramatic drop in juvenile homicide. Ofcials put their efforts into preventing crime instead of waiting until the crime has been committed and then reacting after it is too late. Everyone in the community combined their efforts to intervene with programs to prevent crime. Ofcials enrolled more kids in day camps. When a juvenile was arrested or put on probation, ofcials followed-up with a visit to their homes. More police ofcers were added to targeted areas. Job training was sponsored by various groups. Everyone got together to create anticrime strategies. In addition, Boston and Federal authorities work together to nd out the origin of rearms used to commit

crimes. This way ofcials can attack the gun dealers who are selling guns to juveniles and criminals. Another stretegy used by cities to reduce juvenile crime is to use different methods to stop school truancy. Besides having truant ofcers and police search for truant students, ofcials contact parents, tutor students, counsel students and do whatever is necessary to get the kids back in school. Studies have found that most juvenile crime occur after the school day ends. This is when parents are still at work and the children are on their own. More women are working than ever before. They are divorced, single mothers, or married but have to work to pay the bills. Conservatives try to use nighttime curfews to control juvenile crime. But, since most juvenile crime happens after school lets out, curfews have little effect on crime. It is essencial that we spend the money to increase after-school programs. Sports, clubs, day care, community service and other activities are needed to keep children away from criminal activity and reduce teen-age pregnancies. What do you think kids are doing when you are working and they are not in school? As you can see, there are many solutions to the juvenile crime problem that are better then putting kids in jail. Conservatives have created a climate where prosecutors are charging more and more children as adults. It seems as though there are few children being tried in juvenile courts. Prosecutors and judges are afraid that Conservatives will accuse them of being soft on crime if they try a child as a juvenile. Conservatives like to say, adult crime, adult time. They want more jails and longer sentences. Conservatives also want to cut taxes and keep juvenile programs chronically underfunded and understaffed. But no matter how tough you are on kids who commit crimes, treating kids as adults in court does not make them adults. You have to be tough with programs that really work before the crime

is committed, not wait to punish the offenders after the act. That is the solution to the problem. The one thing Conservatives do not want you to know is that prevention is cheaper than jail. You can put a little money into social programs and solutions that work, or you can put a lot of money into courts and prison systems with reoccurring costs as kids go in and out of jail and become better criminals.
20 SCHOOLS AND CHILDREN

Republicans like to cut state income taxes. Sounds like a good idea, doesnt it? But, does the state then cut its contribution to the schools? Did local government have to raise property taxes or sales taxes to pay for schools and teachers? Do you wonder why your state taxes were cut but you do not seem to have more money? Of course, there is an alternative. You can just cut the money given to schools and have deteriorating schools, large class sizes, etc. Has your school district cut back on sports, art, music, school libraries and other programs due to a lack of tax dollars? There have been schools where there were not enough textbooks for students. Some teachers have paid for school supplies with their own money. How can students study or teachers teach without proper books and supplies? We have schools across the country that are falling apart. Some are not even safe, let alone t for teaching. In some school districts children do not have a school building. They attend school in trailers. Sometimes courts have to force states to spend money on schools. In 2000 the American Civil Liberties Union led a class-action lawsuit against California. The ACLU said that minority and poor students have inadequate schools and have no hope of a proper education. Has your public school system cut back on bus service by saying that elementary and middle-school children who

live relatively close to the school must now walk to school? When school systems cut down on bus transportation, they put kids at risk of being hit by cars. Is there no money for crossing guards? Kids ask their parents to drive them to school because they are afraid to cross certain highways, so parents have to choose between being late to work or putting their children at risk. But you dont have to worry, Conservatives will keep your taxes low and give money to private schools by taking even more money from the public schools. When kids going to school are killed by cars, Conservatives say it is the public school systems fault for not doing a good job. Has your public school system terminated teachers and raised the number of students per class to balance the budget because there was not enough tax money? Do Conservatives then complain that teachers are doing an inferior job? Has your public school system taken money from school construction funds to pay for teachers salaries and/ or day-to-day expenses? Has your public school system raised the price of school lunches to help balance the school budget? Has the school board made that change in a secret session to keep it from taxpayers as long as possible? (They have to get the money somehow to pay for the schools.) In 2000 President Clinton asked the Republican Congress for emergency money to repair the countrys crumbling schools. He did not get what he wanted. Conservatives cut taxes and cut funding for public schools. Then, they complain that the public schools are doing a bad job, so they take more money away from the public schools, especially the poor ones, and give it to private schools. Conservatives have a perfect plan to get money to private and religious schools, and it is working very well. It is perfectPERFECT EVIL. States say that they have lotteries to help pay for education. The lottery prots are supposed to go to the schools.

However, some states give the money to the schools, and some states put the money in their general fund. What does your state do with its lottery money? Who is actually getting it? President Clinton tried, more than once, to obtain funding for adequate child care. Republicans prevented any of the Presidents proposals from becoming law. It is hard to nd good, affordable child care. Women understand this better than men do, which is why we need to elect to public ofce more women who will address this problem. Child care is also necessary for teenage mothers who want to continue their education. Society saves a lot of money in the long run if teenagers nish school and get a decent job, instead of going on welfare. You can spend a little money for a short period of time, or spend a lot of money over a longer period of time. You would think most people would understand this, but they get confused by Conservative rhetoric. Children know it is easy to get suspended from school. They can get in a ght, say something inappropriate to a teacher, etc. Then, they get to stay home, sometimes unsupervised. Some schools when they suspend students also do not let those students make up school work, homework or tests. Therefore, the kids get failing grades during their suspension. This is nuts! With no school work to do, you give the kids a vacation. Plus, the kids can reach a point in a hurry where they just dont care if they go back to school because they are so far behind. You are creating societys future problems. The one thing you do not want to do is let the children control whether they go to school or not. Conservatives think they are being tough on kids by suspending them, but in reality, the kids are controlling the situation by doing exactly what they have to (break a rule) to get exactly what

they want (a vacation from school). If you want to punish a student, you have to make them do something they do not want to do. You can make them stay in school and put them in a study room where they must study and do homework. You can make them perform community service, with school credit. You can ask all the students what they think would be good alternatives to suspension. Anything is better than turning kids loose to do whatever they want to do while their parents are at work. Conservatives do not want children to know about sex. They believe the best way to stop kids from having sex is to increase funding for abstinence programs. Just tell the children not to have sex and that will solve the problem. Conservatives talk about increasing funds for abstinence-only programs, but where do you think they will get the money from since they are going to cut your taxes? They will get it by cutting money from family-planning programs. They dont want girls to know about safe sex because then there would be fewer abortions, and they dont want to lose that issue. Conservatives could care less about children from troubled families. Let them get sexually transmitted diseases! Its their own fault for not being born into a perfect, Conservative family. They were born to the wrong parents and deserve to die from an illegal abortion or from a disease. Only perfect Conservatives are allowed to live in their perfect world. Abstinence is a good message, a good plan A, but you need a plan B for when plan A does not work. Abstinence will not work 100% of the time! The voucher system that Conservatives want implemented in the U.S. has some aws and must be closely scrutinized. It is terribly wrong to take money from public schools and give it to private schools. The answer is to nd additional revenue for both. Poor schools need more money, not less. It is crazy to give private schools tax dollars and not require that their students take the same standard state tests that public school students take. Private schools should

meet the same standards as public schools. If private schools are going to get tax dollars, they should be held accountable. In 1999 Florida Gov. Jeb Bushs program of giving extra dollars to schools who scored the best had an interesting result. The principal and some teachers in a Sarasota County school refused to take the money. They did not think it was right for an afuent school, that has good teachers and equipment and students that normally score well, to be rewarded with additional tax dollars. This is Robin Hood in reverse. Conservatives take the money from poor and middle-class schools and give it to the afuent schools. Since city schools perform so badly and the suburban schools perform so well, and Conservatives want to give kids vouchers to go to any school they want, why not just close down all the city schools and bus all the kids to the suburban schools? Another problem that the voucher system could cause is having children attend various religious schools. You could wind up creating schools for each religion, and there are a lot of religions. Many religions are growing rapidly in this country. The taxpayers would have to pay for all these new religious schools. Kids would go to school only with kids from their own religion. They would have no exposure to kids of other faiths until they went to college or work. This is a good way to promote stereotypes and cause friction between religions, as occurs in other countries. We could wind up creating a school system that teaches religious terrorism inside the United States. A nation divided cannot stand. Our children are our future. But, Conservatives do not want to share the resources equally to give every child in America a bright future.
21 EMPLOYEES AND COMPANIES

Republicans have always supported companies over their workers. Conservatives believe that if you give the money to the rich, the rich will buy or build companies, and people will have a job. The companies will pay wages and give medical, dental, life insurance, and other benets. The problem in recent years is that companies have reduced benets or increased the cost of benets, while holding down wages. Millions of Americans have no health coverage. Many low-wage workers have no health coverge, despite the fact that we had a good economy over a long period of time. They had a job, but their companies did not offer any health benets. Of course, when the economy is not doing well, you have even more people without jobs or health coverage. Companies that do have health benets will give their employees a raise, but then they increase the amount employees pay for benets and the effect is that the employees receive no net pay increase. Conservatives will not allow any laws to be passed that would mandate companies to offer affordable health coverage to all their employees. Studies have shown that the U.S. health care systems are not very good at providing preventive care. This relates to the millions of Americans with no health coverage. Other countries have better health care for more of their people and the people live longer, even though the U.S. spends more per person than any other country. The U.S. is real good at spending money after the person is sick and ends up in a hospital.

Republicans are against a national health care plan. It may not be the answer, but maybe parts of the plan could be used. The current health systems leave too many people, especially single women, children, working poor and minorities, without health coverage. The idea that companies would take care of workers has not worked. We, at the very least, need community-rated plans where small companies can join a pooled community plan with affordable health care. We used to have community health plans, but private insurance companies were allowed to go to big companies and insure their workers, company by company, until the only people left in the community plan were the poor, so the community plans ceased to exist. This was called cherry picking. The big companies saved money at rst, but later, because they were now in a smaller group, their costs just kept increasing and the companies passed the cost on to the employees by having them contribute more and more for health coverage with larger deductibles. Another huge problem that the government has allowed to happen is that companies have eliminated retirement benets for future retirees. Most workers do not realize that when they retire they will not have medical, dental or life insurance coverage. Some companies have grandfathered their older workers so that they will still receive some benets, if they were hired before a certain date, but newer and future workers will have no benets. Some companies have also eliminated their pension plans and replaced them with 401K plans, or nothing at all. If the employees do not contribute to their 401K plan, they will have almost nothing to retire on. Another problem with 401K plans is that the plans allow employees to borrow against them, usually up to 50% of the money in the plan. Often, when employees are laid off and have a loan, they cannot pay back the loan and, thus, lose much of their money from the plan. Besides, what little money retirees

will have will be used to pay for medical and dental expenses. The Republican theory that companies will take care of employees benets has led to a disaster that is about to happen, and no one is doing anything about it. And if you think the current retirees are safe from losing what benets they already have, you havent been paying attention. Some companies have eliminated current retiree non-pension benets, or increased the retiree contributions signicantly. The retirees have sued the companies and some have won, but some have lost, depending on the language in the contracts, booklets, brochures, letters, etc. Other companies have gone out of business, which means they cannot pay the monthly premiums on the medical, dental, life insurance policies, etc., and the coverage is canceled. These benets are not funded the way the pension plans are funded. One trick that insurance companies use to get out of covering sick retirees is particularly insidious. The retirees are told that they have guaranteed coverage in a pooled plan and the pool will not be terminated as long as there still are participants. Then, the insurance company closes the pool and stops new people from joining that pool. The rates in the pool are then raised. As the rates get too high, healthy participants leave and go to less expensive pooled coverage. They are accepted easily because they are healthy. Since there now are fewer and fewer people in the plan, the rates go higher and higher. Eventually, only the very sick are left in that plan. Finally, the rates are so expensive even they have to drop their coverage, and the plan is terminated. The very sick now have no coverage and cannot join a new plan because they are too sick to be accepted. They are faced with two choices: go back to work, if possible, to get benets; or live in fear with no coverage at all. Of course, they could declare bankruptcy or lose all their assets and go on medicaid. There are no good choices available to them under the current system. Republicans protect the companies, while the employees are left to fend for themselves.
22 DEBT, SOCIAL SECURITY, AND MEDICARE

We all know that Conservatives hate social programs and love tax cuts. If they could, they would eliminate social security and medicare and give the money to the rich, who would then take care of us somehow (if they felt like it). Conservatives would tell you that you should work hard and get rich, and they will help you get rich by giving you tax cuts. This is not very realistic, but Conservatives have never been realistic, and I dont expect they will start now. Conservatives used to talk about paying down the national debt, but now they are more interested in tax breaks. I suppose they will worry about the debt sometime in the future, if ever. Why should you care about the government paying down the national debt? It helps the economy because the government reduces its borrowing demand, which reduces interest rates for you and for companies. The national debt soared to record levels after Ronald Reagan became president. The debt has experienced some reduction while Bill Clinton was president. But, it should be reduced much further. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has asked the Republican Congress on several occasions to reduce the national debt. But the Republicans wanted tax cuts instead. Democrates have proposed reducing the national debt, saving social security and improving medicare with a prescription drug benet. The Republicans prefer tax cuts.

Retirees have had to return to work to pay for their prescriptions. You should care about this issue. You may want to retire some day. When Republicans in Washington cut taxes, there is a ripple effect. The government gives with one hand and takes away with the other hand. If the federal government reduces any dollars it gives to the states, the middle-class will have to makeup the differnce, because the rich have received huge tax cuts and the poor have no money. With companies eliminating retirement benets and pensions, and 401K plans depending on employee contributions and not taking out loans, we better make sure social security and medicare are safe and, if necessary, expanded. For many seniors, that is all they are going to have. If you want to set up a second retirement government plan, like a 401K plan, with risks involved, you must exclude high risk stocks and bonds and only allow low risk investments. But make sure the basic social security and medicare systems are left as is, without risk, or you will nd a lot of people forced onto welfare. I do not trust Conservatives to do any of these things. They are too busy trying to make the rich even richer. Tax breaks always favor the rich, with a few crumbs going to everyone else, and everyone else only gets those crumbs if other taxes do not go up.
23 WELFARE
Conservatives attack those on welfare as being lazy people who are mostly members of minority groups and who do not want to get a job. Conservatives also stereotype welfare recipients as minorities who live in the inner-cities. However, many people on welfare are white and many live in rural communities. Some people on welfare were sick and unable to work for a period of time. They needed help to survive and get started again. Some people lost their jobs due to layoffs, were forced to relocate and needed help to start over. Some people on welfare are too young or too old to work. There are many reasons why people are on assistance other than the myth that they do not want to work. Many people who work are still poor. Try working for the minimum wage, or even slightly above it, with no medical benets, and you will understand what it is like to be among the working poor. Believe me, you are in an impossible situation unless you receive some assistance. If your job is seasonal and you are out of work several months a year, you have even fewer resources. There is no way a single mother can pay the rent, utilities, food, transportation, medical, dental and other basics without help. For adults and children to escape public assistance, they must have help with: * Education/Job training

Support groups, volunteers, government, etc., all need to work together to break the cycle of welfare. We need to spend some money on assistance to prevent long-term reliance on welfare. Children need the proper conditions to make sure they do not get trapped in welfare. The kids cannot go to work. They must have a good education and access to family planning (in case they do not heed the abstinence message). But there is one kind of welfare that Republicans and Conservatives just love, and that is corporate welfare. They give tax breaks, provide loopholes and programs for various things to corporations and companies. The corporate lobbyists make sure the Conservatives know what the corporations want. Now, I am not saying all corporate welfare is bad. Sometimes it is needed to get a business off the ground, to ght illegal or unfair foreign competition, etc. Sometimes, however, it is impossible to stop, even when it is not needed any more. It is very wrong to say it is just ne to give assistance to corporations and companies, and then deny assistance to individual adults and children in need. One method they have created to toss children out on the street is to limit the number of years the adults can receive welfare. That is not a problem when the economy is providing plenty of jobs (although many of the jobs are service jobs that do not pay a living wage), but what will happen when the economy is in a slowdown?

Many people still go hungry in America. The working poor do not earn enough to pay all their bills such as rent, utilities, medical, etc. and pay for adequate food for their families. Poverty effects more people than you realize. We must target poverty to help solve the welfare problem. The working poor have no voice in Republican politics, and tax breaks have very little affect on their small income.
24 GOVERNMENT
Conservatives used to talk about how important it was for legislators to have term limits. Then, a funny thing happened. The Republicans won the House and the Senate in Washington. Guess what happened? They decided term limits were not such a good idea after all. If a legislator were facing their nal term in ofce because of term limits, special interest groups would not be able to threaten them by saying they will lose the next election. Term limits work for the ofce of president, and they can work in the House and Senate. Term limits should not be too short a time period. Just as you do not want legislators to be in ofce 50 years, you do not want them to serve just one term, either. Perhaps a term limit of four three-year terms, for a total of 12 years, for the House and three four-year terms, for a total of 12 years, for the Senate. If the president has a maximum of 8 years to complete his or her agenda, then 12 years (50% more time) should be enough for the House and Senate politicians to complete their agendas. Conservatives do not like it when courts rule against them. Lately, they have been angry when courts strike down laws banning partial-birth abortions, school vouchers, etc. They talk about how important the law is, but when the courts apply the laws fairly and equally, Conservatives get very angry. Conservatives do, not want fair laws. They want everyone to think as they do, and they are willing to destroy the legal system to get what they want. And that makes them dangerous. They can do things to our legal system that no army from any other country could force on us.

In 2000 Florida Republican legislators were mad at Florida courts for nding school vouchers unconstitutional, allowing recounts of presidential votes and other rulings they did not like. Republicans want to make changes to the Florida Supreme Court which would have the court rule the way they want it to. Republicans want to add two new members to the court and a powerful chief justice appointed by the Republican governor. Other changes are also proposed. There is a problem with having the courts rule exactly as Republicans want them to rule. You lose the separation of power between the legislature, the executive branch and the courts. You windup with only one branch of governmentConservative Republicans. Florida has a Republican governor, a Republican Senate, a Republican House and Conservatives want a Republican Supreme Court (a Republican judicial branch). Only a free and impartial court system has any chance to control the dangerous beliefs of Conservatives. Republicans do not want the best qualied judges, or any judge that does not think exactly as they do. Conservatives do not believe in our constitution, our different branches of government, our separation of powers, or any law that prevents them from forcing every American to think and act exactly as they believe you should. Conservatives talk about protecting your rights as a citizen, including your right to privacy. If their corporate buddies want your personal data, however, then your rights go to the back of the pack in a hurry. Congressional Republicans support legislation that allows companies to share your personal data with any of their afliated companies. Financial institutions sent Americans Privacy Policies and Privacy Statements. You had to write a letter or ll out a form requesting your personal information not be shared with other companies and send it to the institutions.

It should have been the opposite. Your peronal information should not be shared with any other company, unless you send a form approving the release of your private records. In 1996 Susan McDougal refused to answer grand jury questions about Whitewater, President Clinton and his wife Hillary. Susan was sent to jail for civil contempt. After 18 months in jail Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starrs team brought Susan back to answer questions again and suggested she could be charged with criminal contempt. Susan refused to answer the questions about the Clintons in front of the grand jury again. Susan said privately that she did not know of any illegal activities that involved the Clintons. Starr had offered Susan immunity if she testied, as long as she did not commit perjury. Susan said Starr was trying to force her to lie about the Clintons. She was afraid that if she told the truth about the Clintons being innocent, Starr would charge her with perjury. Susan and her husband, James McDougal, were charged in the Whitewater investigation and convicted of fraud. James died in prison. But, before he died, James wrote a note that indicated he was going to lie about the Clintons to secure immunity. In 1996 Susan nally got her trial on refusing to answer questions in front of a grand jury. She answered all the questions in front of the trial jury. The jury acquitted her of obstructing the Whitewater investigation. Susan was released from jail. When an investigator/prosecutor has absolute power and tells someone that if they answer questions a certain way they will get a good deal or no prison time, but if they answer questions another way, a way that the investigator does not like, they will go to jail, not many people have the

courage to stand against them. The government must be careful to have some checks and balances in place when it gives an investigator such unlimited power and funds. Could you stand against such pressure? What if you had kids to take care of? It is a lot harder than you think to tell the truth in the face of certain jail time. Congress has done nothing in years to help people in health matters. The patients bill of rightsgiving patients minimum rights when being rejected for a medical procedure, giving patients the right to sue health insurers, regulating health maintenance organizations (HMO), etc.has gone nowhere. Millions of Americans still have no health coverage. Companies are not increasing the number of employees covered for health care. Republicans are too busy giving tax breaks for the rich to help those who need it the most. The government should mandate that if you have a job, you must receive health coverage from the employer. The government should pass the laws necessary to make this happen. They could create community rating, large pooling systems, or national health care that supplements private coverageanything that would help employers give affordable health coverage to their employees. It is important to have healthy employees who are at work and not at home sick, and that small illnesses be caught quickly before they become large, expensive hospitalizations. There should be a law passed that when someone retires from a company the company must offer health coverage, even if the retiree must pay 100% of the premium. That way, the retiree will have guaranteed coverage that cannot be canceled if the retiree gets sick, and the retiree also will have guaranteed group rates. Conservatives do not like to get involved with problems outside of the United States. Many Conservatives are Isolationist and many of them hate the United Nations organization. President George W. Bush did not want to get

deeply involved in the Israeli/Palestinian conict, like President Clinton did. There is a problem with that policy. The weapons used by Israel to kill Palestinians are U.S.-made weapons. We appear to most of the Arab world to be helping Israel, but not the Palestinians. By not getting deeply involved, we allow the conict to worsen. Then, when we are nally drawn into the conict, we are more deeply involved than we should have been. Waiting until a conict, we are partially involved in, gets worse; can put Americans in danger. The U.S. must use its diplomatic and economic power to create a Palestinian State. Over 100 countries came to an agreement on Controlling Biological Weapons. Conservatives and President George W. Bush rejected the agreement. After the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon President Bush decided that the countererrorism bill, which included a provision to outlaw harmful biological agents in deadly quantities, was a good idea. When Ronald Reagan was president in the 1980s there was a big federal tax cut and the decit grew to record levels. The rich saved thousands of dollars in federal tax and the middle-class saved hundreds of dollars. During the same period the Social Security tax (FICA) increased by hundreds of dollars. The FICA increases offset the tax cuts received by the middle-class. I still talk to people today, some who are too young to remember Reaganomics, that actually believe that the little guy received a tax break during the Reagan years. Not only did social security taxes go up, but state and local taxes were increased, also. I guess Republicans can get some people to believe anything. Republicans and their policies have made the rich beyond rich now. They are obscenely rich. They are not millionaires anymore; they are billionaires. The middle-class gets smaller as more people move into service jobs, and the working-poor class keeps growing, with fewer benets.

And, still, the Conservatives want to give more tax breaks to the rich! Also, when Ronald Reagan was president, Conservatives created a secret government. Reagan had vowed never to deal with terrorists. But, Conservatives in the White House traded arms to Iran for the release of U.S. hostages in Iran and money. The money was diverted to buy arms for rebels (Contras) in Nicaragua. There was a congressional ban on aid to the Contras. This was called the IranContra Affair. Reagan said he did not know anything about the secret dealings. Reagan red National Security Adviser, John Poindexter and Military aide, Lt. Col. Oliver North. So, we have Conservatives in the government making deals with people who take hostages (terrorists) and keeping it a secret from the President. It is hard to believe that this could happen in America. But, if you understand Conservatives, you understand that they could care less about laws or who they make deals with, even if the people they deal with are evil.
25 CAMPAIGN FUNDING
Remember when Conservatives wanted campaign funding reform? That was before the Republicans took over the House and Senate in Washington. It was not on their priority list for a long time. Everyone knows that money will buy you access to politicians. Politicians listen to the rich, corporations and the powerful special interest groups because they want large campaign contributions to help them get elected or reelected. Republicans complain that Unions give money to the democrats, but not all union members are democrats. However, Republicans do not complain when corporations give money to the Republicans, but not all stockholders are Republicans. Corporations contribute a lot more to politicians and political parties than unions contribute. Rpublicans complained that president Clinton was rewarding big compaign contributors with sleep overs and coffee meetings at the White House. It is illegal to raise funds on federal property. Congress brings their contributors to the capitol for special events. Republican House Leader, Newt Gingrich brought in lobbyists who supported his fund-raising to help write bills in the lobbyists clients favor. President Reagan hosted the Republican Eagles, who were big campaign donors, at the White House, where he asked them for more help. In the 1990s president Bush hosted the Republican Team 100, a group of big donors, at the White House.

They all use the same valid excuse, they are not raising contributions on federal property, they are just rewarding big contributors who have given previously or will give it the future away from federal property. No one is doing anything illegal. Soft money is unregulated money that is given to national political parties. Since the money is not given to a particular candidate, anyone or any group can contribute whatever they want to. Issue ads are ads created by special interest groups or organizations that are supposed to state their opinion of an issue. They are actually ads that attack particular candidates. These groups can spend whatever they want to on the ads because they are, supposedly, not afliated with any candidates. Candidates like these ads because no matter how outrageous the ads are, they can claim they had nothing to do with the ads and are not responsible for the content. Rich individuals and corporations nd ways to give as much as they want to candidates. Internal Revenue Service rulings, court rulings and election laws all provide loopholes for uncontrolled contributions. Donor identities are often kept secret, legally. When fund raisers are held aboard yachts and at mansions, you will probably not be invited. Republicans in Congress used the libuster to kill campaign-nance reform in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. The House killed nance reform in 2001. Rich individuals and corporations give large amounts to the Republicans and have access to them to get laws passed that help them or defeat the passage of laws that hurt them. The middle class, children, minorities and poor people can not donate large sums of money. They can only be noticed by politicians when they vote. More of them need to vote.

Campaign Finance Reform will require the following changes: 1. Take some tax dollars and give it to the politicians to fund their campaigns. It would not cost that much per person and it would free politicians to do their real job. It would take away the inuence that special interests have on politicians. It would be cheaper in the long run. 2. Provide some free TV time to each candidate. There should be equal TV time for each candidate. If not, the public only sees the candidate with the most money. 3. Eliminate soft money contributions to political parties. 4. Limits on contributions should apply to individuals and groups. 5. Give tax breaks to middle-class people who contribute to campaigns. 6. Restrict issue ads that are thinly-veiled political attack ads. 7. Everyone who gives money to any kind of political organization must be identied. If Congress does pass any reforms, do you think loopholes will still exist for the rich, corporations and special interests?

I had expected that Republican President Richard Nixon would have done more good things like when he established U.S. relations with communist China, but the bad he did far outweighed the good. He had problems with judgment, and he seemed to be paranoid. What really made me mad was that I had voted for him. The Nixon presidency, along with my college years, is what started my change from a Conservative to a liberal. I started to realize that Conservatives never solve problems, they just create them. By the time Ronald Reagan came along, I realized what he was going to do and not do ahead of time, and I never voted for him. I think I was the only one. The Watergate scandal occurred when President Nixon and other people in the White House engaged in an obstruction of justice. You can read about all the details in the book, All The Presidents Men, by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward. In 1973 some amazing events occured that shows how dangerous a Conservative president can be. Archibald Cox was the Watergate special prosecutor. Cox was investigting the White House cover-up of the break-in at the Democratic National Committee ofces at the Watergate complex and was seeking access to the White House tape recordings. On Saturday, October 20, President Nixon ordered Elliot Richardson, the U.S. attorney general to re Cox. Richardson refused to re Cox and resigned. Then, the deputy U.S. attorney general, William Ruckelshaus, was ordered to re Cox. Ruckelshaus refused and was red. Solicitor General Robert Bork did re Cox.

These events came to be known as the Saturday Night Massacre. The Supreme Court ruled that the White House tape recordings of the cover-up had to be given to the new special prosecutor. The House Judiciary Committee voted to recommend impeachment to the House of Representatives. Nixon then resigned as president in 1974. President Nixon expanded the Vietnam War and attacked communist troops in Cambodia. This caused protests in the United States. In 1970 students were protesting the Vietnam War at the Kent State University in Ohio. National Guard troops were sent to the campus to control the students. The guardsmen open re on the students. They killed four students and wounded nine others. How can any government send troops to a university and shoot unarmed students? As long as I live, I will always wonder why the guardsmen did not re warning shots into the ground or up into the air, which would have been enough to scare off the students, if that was there intent. Then again, why did they need to shoot at all? How could they shoot unarmed students? I know Conservatives love to show power and authority when faced with something that they dont like. Conservatives hated Vietnam War protesters. But the last time I checked, this was still a free country. Conservatives really do not want people to have too much freedom, and you better not do something they dont like. President Nixon had an enemies list, a list of people he thought were a threat to him. I believe that is a sign of paranoia. He tried to use the IRS to go after some of them. For some people, it was an honor to be on his list. You must be doing something right, if a Conservative is mad at you. I imagine I would have been on that list. The White House tape recordings revealed that president Nixon requested IRS tax audits of Jewish campaign contributors, who made contributions to Democrats. Nixon

wanted to have Jews investigated to see if they could nd something they did wrong and then use that information to attack them. Nixon and his aides were afraid of Jews and they thought they were above the law. They were wrong. Conservatives have a tendency to be paranoid, and Nixon was as paranoid as they get. It is scary to think he was the president of the United States.
27 MILITARY
Conservatives just love to give lots of money to the military. Yes, we do need a strong military, but the military must be efcient and strong in the right areas. If the money is not spent where it is needed the most, you have a military that is not prepared to ght modern wars, terrorists, etc. We must have weapons that are what the military really needs, not what they may wish for, or what politicians think would be good for business in their district, or what an industry wants to sell the military, or what starts out as a reasonable idea for a weapons system, but gets totally out of control. You cannot give the military complete control of military projects. Congress must keep a watchful eye on them. You would be amazed, or maybe not, at what the military can spend money on. We also must have a military that is honest about its capabilities and honest about actual events. Even the smallest lie can have very serious consequences. Lies can start wars, prolong wars, prevent us from entering a war when we should, or end a war before we could have nished it. No country has used nuclear weapons against another country since the U.S. dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan to end World War II. Countries with nuclear weapons have not attacked each other with these weapons because of MAD and the 1972 SALT I treaty. MAD is Mutual Assured Destruction, which means that if a country attacks another country with nuclear weapons, the country being attacked would have enough nuclear weapons left to strike back and destroy the attacking

country. It would be suicide to attack another country with nuclear weapons. The SALT or ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile) treaty of 1972 limits missile defenses and its the basis of arms control. In the 1980s preisdent Ronald Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or Star Wars missile defense shield which would protect the U.S. from attack by enemy Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs), which would destabilize arms control by giving the U.S. something no other country has. This would force other countries to build missile defenses or build more nuclear weapons to counter our missile defenses. The cost of this missile defense would be enormous and there are questions as to whether it could ever work. Currently, the Star Wars system is called the National Missile Defense (NMD) and is to be used to defend against an attack from countries with a small nuclear force such as North Korea or China, or potential missile threats from countries like Iraq or Libya. Of course, rst you have to believe that these countries are MAD and want to see their countries destroyed by U.S. retaliation. The NMD is a smaller version of Star Wars. It will still cost billions of dollars. Conservative Republicans such as Senator Jesse Helms want the larger and more costly Star Wars system. European allies of the U.S. and NATO are both opposed to the National Missile Defense. They are worried about the effect NMD will have on the ABM treaty and arms control. They also do not believe there is a real nuclear threat from countries with a small nuclear force. China is unhappy with the U.S. National Missile Defense. The NMD would neutralize Chinas small nuclear force. China has indicated that it would increase their nuclear missile force to counter our NMD. China is apprehensive of what a Conservative Republican government might

do, because they attack China as a threat to the United States and Taiwan. If you factor in that the Republicans want to build a larger, more expensive Star Wars missile defense system, other countries may not feel safe from a Republican administration. You never can be sure what Conservatives might do. They often do not think rationally, and they can never be trusted not to do something crazy. Russia has stated that it has misgivings about the National Missile Defense. Russia may soften its position against the NMD if it can get something in return. In January, 2000 there was a test of the National Missile Defense. A missile tried to hit a mock warhead launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. It failed, even though no defensive measures were used by the warhead. In July, 2000 there wss another test of the NMD. The team ring the missile to intercept the warhead knew all the details about the ring of the warhead. They knew when the warhead was being launched, where it was being launched from, where it was going, any defensive measures it would use, etc. The technology needed to make this NMD system work is very complicated and must work perfectly. In July, 2001 the U.S. nally had a successful test of the NMD. A missile hit another missile. Do not worry, we will spend many millions on numerous tests in the future. Humans who are not perfect and companies that are not perfect are going to build this system that needs to be perfect. Who knows what the system might choose to shoot down? It could shoot down anything that is in the air. Weve done that before when our Navy shot down an Iranian passenger plane and when our Air Force shot down two U.S. Army helicopters in Iraq, despite all of our wonderful technology.

All this talk about North Korea attacking the U.S. is a good example of Republican scare tactics to get what they really want: an expensive system that will make their friends richer. North Korea now seems to be interested in making peace with South Korea. Their leaders have met for the rst time. North Korea even opened negotiations with the Clinton administration. I believe that the new, younger leader of North Korea has gured out that it is better and more fun to be a dictator of a rich country than a dictator of a poor country. As the old, hard-line dictators die off, the people and new leaders realize that the wonderful dictators they suffered for are now dead, so why should they continue to suffer? Conservatives just hate it when they lose a bad guy. Now, they have to go look somewhere else for a new bad guy. Terrorists are bad guys, but they do not have any ICBMs. Of course, President Bush could reverse Clinton administration negotiations with North Korea and take a hard line against them in order to create tension between our countries and use that hostility to push for national missile defense. What Conservatives do not want you to think about or understand is that all this money and all these valuable resources are being spent to work (maybe) against only one type of nuclear vehicle delivery system: The ICBM. This National Missile Defense System, and the more expensive Star Wars system the Republicans want, does not work against the following systems: 1. Cruise missiles (low-ying missiles that are difcult to detect). 2. Airplanes (bombers or other types of aircraft). Nuclear bombs are smaller now. That is why you can have multiple warheads in one ICBM. Almost any plane could carry a nuclear bomb.

3. Submarines. They can get very close to their targets, leaving you no time to shoot down the missiles. 4. Surface ships, trucks, cars, suitcases, or any other unconventional delivery method you can think of. Something else that you are not supposed to think about is that even if the military could get the NMD system to work, there are counter measure an enemy can use against the system. Some examples are: 1. Decoy balloons made of various materials. 2. Smart decoys that send out signals similar to those of a warhead. 3. Warheads could be made to detonate when hit by the defensive missile, creating havoc with the remaining defensive system. 4. Attack the Defensive System directly. 5. Anything else that can be created by anyone. So, even if you have a miracle where the NMD works and the enemy counter measures do not work, all the enemy has to do is use a different delivery system other than an ICBM. In fact, they do not even need an atomic bomb to attack America. Airplanes can be bombs (Unfortunately, that came true on September 11, 2001 when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington using commerical airplanes). We need to take money from the NMD and use it to make our borders, harbors, ships (sea marshals), airports, planes, plane cockpits, bus terminals, dams, reservoirs, power plants, computer networks, etc. more secure. However, if you solve the security problem with commercial planes, you still have problems with charter planes and small aircraft. Conservatives want you to be stupid and uninformed about the truth. Conservatives rely on a stupid public to do

whatever they want to do and give big money to their buddies. For anyone to say that Star Wars will make us safe from nuclear attack is, to me, a criminal act. Conservatives cannot even guarantee that our technology will work against an ICBM or that decoys will not neutralize our technology or terrorists will not use other methods and systems to attack us. It gives a false sence of safety, which is the most atrocious lie to be perpetrated on the American people. What does work is deterrence whose principle is, you attack us and we will annihilate you. Also, a strong CIA, FBI, and other intelligence agencies are needed to stop terrorists before they can commit their crimes. Intelligence is everything. Of course, Conservatives and intelligence are mutually exclusive terms. Conservatives believe they can win a war against terrorism by just using our military. Defeating terrorism militarily is a temporary solution. We must use our diplomatic and economic power to solve problems, which is the real way to defeat terrorism. Conservatives do not mind spending billions for things they like, but they can nd no money for the millions of Americans who have no health care, no child care, crumbling schools, etc. In 1995 former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara wrote a book titled In Retrospect: The Tragedy and Lessons of Vietnam. The book explained a lot about the mistakes made before and druing the war. After president John F. Kennedy, who refused to send combat troops to Vietnam, was assassinated; ignorant politicians and government ofcials made some terrible decisions. Military leaders also made mistakes and failed to lead when we needed leadership desperately. One of the most terrible episodes of the Vietnam War occurred in the village of My Lai. Hundreds of old men, women and children were massacred. Some of them were herded into ditches and shot, similar to what nazis did to

Jews and others in WWII. Lt. William Calley was courtmartialed and found guilty. However, none of Calleys superiors were prosecuted. There were some heroes at My Lai. Helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, crewmen Glenn Andreotta and gunner Lawrence Colburn saved some of the villagers. Thompson put his helicopter between some villagers and the U.S. soldiers. Thompson ordered Colburn to shoot the U.S. troops if they tried to stop his rescue of the villagers. The troops backed down. There is a big difference between shooting unarmed old men, women and children and shooting at someone who can shoot back. Andreotta went into a ditch and rescued a young child. Andreotta died later in Vietnam. The three heroes nally received the Soldiers Medal for saving the villagers about 30 years later in 1998. A conservative military did not want to deal with what happened at My Lai. They did not want anyone to know about what Thompson and his crew did. Thompson and Colburn returned to My Lai in 1998 also. It seems as though the three men received their medals because the military was afraid of the Vietnamese honoring them, if the U.S. had not yet honored them. I saw the story and the return trip on TV. It was a moving experience. It was very interesting to nd out that the other ofcer accused by Thompson of being involved in the massacre got off completely free of charges. Thompson was not happy about that. If you want to try to understand the Vietnam War, you should watch the movie Hearts And Minds. This is an excellent documentary about the war and the politics of the war. Everyone, especially high school students, should watch it. One of the most interesting moments comes when they are showing a Vietnamese farmers outcry over the death of his 8-year-old daughter, his 3-year-old son and his mother. They were killed when his farmhouse was bombed by an American plane. He accuses Nixon of murder. The

movie shows the intense pain and anguish of that farmer and others in several different scenes. Then, a scene shows General William C. Westmoreland, who commanded U.S. forces in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968, saying, Well, the Oriental doesnt put the same high price on life as does the Westerner. Life is plentiful and life is cheap in the Orient. As the philosophy of the Orient expresses it: Life is not important. Westmorelands statement could possibly be the single most asinine, inane, stupid statement in the history of the world. It is the kind of statement Conservatives use to dehumanize people who are different, thus rationalizing the harming or even killing of those lesser human beings. This statement is not true. Orientals feel the pain of losing a loved one, just the same as we do. They love life, just as we do. And they love their country, just as we do. What really infuriates me is that at one time I believed what Westmorland said. Not only did I believe it, I actually repeated it, which is very hard for me to admit now. I hate myself for doing that, and I apologize for what I did. I was in the Air Force from 1963 to 1967. I believed almost anything the Conservatives said back then. In 1982 Westmoreland led suit against CBS because of a television show which indicated that during the Vietnam War he delibertely misrepresented the North Vietnamese and Vietcong troop strength. But, days before the case was to go to the jury, Westmoreland dropped the suit. As I remember it, CBS issued a statement that was acceptable to Westmoreland and CBS, so Westmorland dropped the suit. I do not believe Westmoreland was a bad person. He was just raised to believe certain things, and he believed them. I believed them, too. Since then, I have come to realize that what I believed then was not true. Conservatives and some people in the military thought we could win the war in Vietnam. What they failed to realize was that we would have to kill everyone in the country

to win. We would have to kill every communist in the North and everyone who could be a communist in the South. Think about it: if someone invaded the United States, how long would you ght to remove them from the U.S.? You would ght as long as you lived. Then, you would expect your children to ght on after you. Then, you would expect your grandchildren to ght on after that, and so onforeveruntil the invaders left or every American was dead. What makes you think it would be any different in any other country? President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned Americans about the Military-Industrial Complex. He said we must guard against the inuence and the power of the military and the arms industry working together against the best interest of the country. The Army spent many millions developing a tankmounted, radar-guided gun to shoot down aircraft, called the Sergeant York. It could not even hit a helicoper. The program was cancelled. Then the Army decided to create a system that was even more complicatd, called the Forward-Area Air-Defense system (FAAD). FAAD was designed to use missiles mounted on armored chassis, missiles on trucks, guns mounted on tanks and cannons on another vehicle. It was very complicated and would cost billions. Actually, a good missile system works best against aircraft or tanks. The military has put ofcers in charge of systems that know nothing about technology, which is critical to creating modern weapon systems. The method the Army used to create its weapons had some problems that needed to be corrected. The Army and other services seemed to have no clue that simple can be better. The more complicated the weapon is, the more things can go wrong. In battle, you want something that works, not the most complicated weapon in the world.

HBOs The Pentagon Wars, is a movie based on actual events. What the military did to the Bradley Fighting Vehicle is hard to believe. The military took a good idea and made it so complicated that it became dangerous for soldiers to ride in. It became a moving bomb. Fortunatley, an Air Force colonel was assigned to test the troop transport. The colonel destroyed his militry career to expose the Bradley as an unsafe vehicle. He was successful and the aws in the Bradley were corrected. He saved the lives of many soldiers. The movie shows how military ofcers can put their military careers and the reward of future well-paying jobs in the defesne industry ahead of the countrys defense and the safety of the ordinary soldier. Everyone should watch the movie, especially high school students. You will see a good example of the Military-Industrial Complex. The latest military failure, which has cost soldiers their lives, is the Osprey aircraft. The Osprey takes off like a helicopter, rotates its propellers, then ies like an airplane. It seems as though the military did not report all the actual test results and falsied records to hide the aircrafts problems. Several ofcers were charged with misconduct. Three Marine ofcers were found to be in violation of some of the charges. The military must be controlled by a government which is not inuenced by the defesne industry. If the government and the military are inuenced by the MilitaryIndustrial Complex, then we will have a military created by money and prots. The ordinry soldier will have to pay the price with their lives.
28 THE TENTH LEVEL

After WWII ended, many Nazis used the defense that they were just following orders. They were just doing what Hitler told them to do. It was not their fault. They just believed what their leaders told them. They were a very Conservative society trained to obey without question, which is exactly what Conservatives want. Americans think that they could never be like the Nazis. They would never follow orders without question. No one could get them to do something they did not want to do. The Tenth Level, was a CBS movie based on actual 1963 studies by a Yale University professor. The studies tried to ascertain how far the average person would go in inicting pain on other people if the subjects were absolved of any responsibility by a high authority. The professor was portrayed by William Shatner. In the movie subjects were placed in a room before a panel of buttons from one to twenty. In another room, hidden from their view, other subjects received electric shock of increasing intensity as each of the buttons were pressed. At the tenth level the shock bacame painful. The results found that 90% of the subjects went to the tenth level and more than 60% went all the way to the top level which generated agonizing pain. The subjects could have been killing someone for all they knew. As long as the authority gure, the professor, told them it was alright and they were not responsible, they kept pushing the buttons going higher and higher. Would you follow orders and do what you were told to do? Have you been trained by Conservatives not to ask questions and just believe whatever they tell you?

If you get a chance to see this movie, do not miss it. Every high school student should study the results of the 1963 Yale University professors studies. It is important to understand how Conservatives can control you. Your free will can be taken away from you if you do not question those who are telling you what to do and think. And, you dont even realize they are doing it to you.
29 CONCLUDING THOUGHTS
When I was a Conservative, I thought I knew everything. I thought I had all the answers, and I believed what I was told without question. I did not think for myself. I did no research or investigation. I did not read enough. I did nothing to inform myself. I have since learned that there are no easy answers and no easy solutions, despite what Conservatives tell you. We must not wait until they go to college to educate our children on the dangers of Conservatism. We must educate them at the high school level. They must learn to question Conservative rhetoric. They should learn to think, use common sense, reason and basic intelligence correctly. They must learn about compassion and not hate someone who is different from them. They should learn about logic and how people use a false premise to twist logic to their own evil use. People can be book smart, but not have real intelligence or wisdom. Getting the facts straight is more important than you may realize. It is my hope that this book will get you to think for yourself and ask questions. Do not follow leaders blindly. This is especially important as you get older, when you want to protect what you have accumulated and you want to be safe. Conservatives will tell you that if you just give away a little freedom here and there, they will help you keep what you have and make you safe. But, as you have seen, they actually do the opposite. Most people change from Liberal to Conservative as they get older. I did the opposite.

Many people do not want to make the effort to do all the work that it takes to keep informed. It is easier to let someone or some institution tell them what to do and what to think. Sometimes people dont see the truth when it is right in front of them. They either dont want to see it or wont allow themselves to think differently from what they are told to believe. Conservatives cant stand people who think for themselves. They want people who accept what they say without question and then repeat it like a parrot. Conservatives want people who think, see, hear and speak alike. What do you think freedom is? Does freedom mean that everyone must think as you do? Should everyone have to listen to your Christian prayers? Should people have the freedom of choice to watch what they want, or only what you think they should see? Should doctors and patients make medical decisions together, or should you decide what medical procedures are acceptable? Should anyone have the freedom of choice, or should you decide for them? The danger to the survival of the United States is not from the outside, but from within. It is not from communists or the far left. You can see the dangers they represent and counter it easily. Their economic system has never worked, and will never work. It is not from rogue countries or terrorists. We can defeat them with our military, our intelligence agencies and our diplomacy, whenever we are provoked or decide to take action. No one outside the U.S. can destroy our country. The real danger is from the right, the Conservatives. It is more difcult to see the danger they pose. They say things that sound good as long as you do not analyze what they say. As I have shown you, they convince Americans to give away some of their freedoms. They pit one religion against the other. They get people to accept the fact that millions of Americans have no medical care. They destroy the public school system. They make the rich even richer and destroy the middle-class, creating two polarized

classes, rich and poor. They can turn this country into a third-world country, with people hating each other because they are different, just as occurs in many other countries. You must be on guard against Conservative agendas. If you do not pay attention to what they are doing, you will not realize what has happened until it is too late. Conservatives just suck you in deeper and deeper, until the country we know and love disappears. Did you ever notice that Republicans promise that they are going to cut taxes every election? Did you ever hear a Republican say that they were not going to cut taxes? They also are going to give more money to the military, police, schools, and everyone else in front of them as they campaign. Somehow, however, the money promised by Conservatives never seems to materialize, except for the rich. If they actually cut taxes as promised for the middle class after every election, there would be no taxes by now. Since the rich have tax breaks and loopholes, and the poor have no money, where do you think the tax money comes from? The answer is, the middle class. It always comes from them. It has to. If the middle-class did not pay the taxes, there would be no schools, roads, police, reghters, military, etc. Conservatives lie all the time, and people believe them. I sometimes wonder if a Conservative can actually tell the truth? They probably have a rule against it. If a Conservative did tell the truth, they would probably be labeled as a liberal, a fate worst than death for a Conservative. The elimination of the Estate tax is an example of how the rich get richer and the middle-class gets poorer. The trick used by Republicans was to call it the Death tax and make people believe they were going to benet from the elimination of the Estate tax. You only had to pay taxes on the estate value above $675,000 and that deduction was already going to be increased to $1,000,000 in a few years. Married people could double the deduction. Small business and farmers had a

larger deduction. Also, only about 2% of Americans are millionaires or billionairs. As the Estate tax is eliminated, so will the money that is passed on to states. The federal government shared the tax dollars with the states. Now the states will have to get the money from another source. Since the rich are going to pay less in texes and have loopholes to use, and the poor have no money, the middle-class will have to pay the tax increases. What do I mean by tax increases, when Republicans are cutting your federal tax? Sometimes state and city taxes are increased. If state taxes are cut for the rich, then other taxes and/or fees are increased. Examples are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Federal FICA Property (Rent) Water and sewer Sales Gasoline Cable TV Phone (take a close look at all the charges on your phone bill) 8. School 9. etc. Most of the bills you receive have some sort of tax and/or fees included. Did you ever wonder why, if Conservatives are always cutting your taxes, you do not have any extra money in your pocket? Most people seem to believe they are actually receiving a tax cut. They vote for Conservatives who give tax breaks to the rich. Why do you want bigger tax breaks for millionaires and billinaires? Do you believe that somehow the money will trickle down to you? If the rich buy a foreign car, a foreign yacht, a foreign company, a foreign villa, etc.; the only benet you can receive is to be one of

their servants. Maybe the rich will invest in a U.S. company that will create a service job for you paying minimum wage. One thing is for sure, the middle-class will have to pay more in taxes and fees to provide the money for all the services provided by the government. Perhaps you believe that the big tax breaks for the rich can be underwritten with money from a budget surplus. Well, that was a great idea as long as we never had an economic downturn. Whenever the economy hits a recession, and the rich are not paying taxes, the middle class will be left holding the bag. Remember, if the rich do not pay the taxes, YOU DO! Conservatives live in a fantasy world where they believe everyone has the same opportunity to become rich in America. They have no understanding that everyone does not have the same opportunities. There are people with mental problems, people with physical problems that they can not overcome, people who have been abused as children, people who do not speak english perfectly, people who attended inferior schools, women who are left to take care of their children alone, people who never had enough food to be healthy, people who have never had medical coverage, people who have been in trouble with the law and have only been punishednever helped, people who are not Christians, people who are gay, people who are not white, people who lost their job, etc.. You get the idea, everyone is not Perfect, like Conservatives are! Conservatives will tell you we do not need more gun laws, we just have to enforce the laws we already have. As I stated before, there are many loopholes in current laws and no coordination of the many different gun laws throughout the country. Even when laws are passed, conservatives make it difcult for law enforcement to do their job. Federal law enforcement ofcals tried to prosecute a brother and his sister who were selling guns out of a store in Birmingham, Alabama. They were using various people to complete federal

gun applications. Then, the guns were sold to criminals who could not legally buy guns. A federal judge dismissed the case because Congress did not pass a law clearly making these transations (straw purchases) illegal. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms can only inspect gun dealers records once a year and cannot use undercover agents to pose as criminals to purchase guns from gun dealers. In Florida, pawnshops report the name, address, phone number and a ngerprint of anyone who pawns items, including guns, to a statewide database. Police use this data to catch people who pawn stolen guns and other items. Under pressure from the National Rie Association, the state deletes the gun records after 48 hours. The police are not pleased that this action makes it more difcult for them to solve crimes and is an aide to criminals who pawn stolen guns. Here, we have Conservatives preventing law enforcement ofcials from going after criminals. Then, they lie about law enforcement ofcals not enforcing the laws, while Conservatives make sure the laws are weak, nonexistent or conicting. Can you think of something more devious or evil? And you still dont think Conservatives are dangerous? Another reason Conservatives are dangerous is their Miracle Theory. Even if you can get them to admit that there is a problem with something, they will tell you it will not be a problem in the future because a Miracle will happen to solve the problem. We do not have to worry about overpopulation, the environment (clean water, air, etc.), nite resources (gas, oil, etc.), or anything else because Technology, Companies, Scientists, God, or some miracle will save us. We do not have to worry or do anything today about a future problem because the Miracle will save us. If they are wrong unthinkable actions will have to be taken

to solve the problems, if it is not too late to reverse the disaster. Everyone was horried when Timothy McVeigh bombed the Oklahoma city federal building killing over 100 people, including 19 children. McVeigh was mad at the government because of the deaths that occurred at the Branch Davidians compound in Waco, Texas; the FBI shootout at Ruby Ridge, Idaho; and other things he believed the government was responsible for. Who taught him to hate and kill? No one wants to accept any responsibility for what caused McVeigh to kill. Just execute McVeigh and we have solved the problem. The military taught him to kill. The death penalty taught him that killing is an acceptable solution if you have a problem and the government approves of killing as a nal solution. Conservative radio talk show hosts taught him to hate the government. Teaching our children to hate and kill is evilPERFECT EVIL. If McVeigh had grown old, while rotting in jail for his lifetime, he might have come to realize what he did was wrong. When the government killed McVeigh, he died believing that what he did was justied and he had won his battle against the government. Death released him from decades of being locked up in prison by a government he hated. The most dangerous Conservative is one who pretends not to be a Conservative. They will say anything to get elected, but you cant trust them. Once they are elected, they have to take care of the people who gave them large sums of money, and everyone else is left behind to suffer. Conservatives use the word Liberal as a dirty word. They label anyone they do not like a Liberal. To me, a Liberal is a person who cares about people who have no medical coverage, girls who get pregnant when they dont plan to, shoddy schools and large class sizes, poor people, seniors, retirees with no benets, overpopulation, the environment, gay people, children, Christians and non-Christians, people who are different, etc. A Liberal is a good

person, not a bad person. Conservatives try to make Liberals equal to a communists. But communists are not what they used to be, and a communist is not a Liberal. Do not allow Conservatives to trick you into believing that people who care about people and important issues are bad people, and that the only thing you should care about is money. Do you trust Conservatives, big business and the rich to do what is best for the middle class, seniors and children, or do you trust Liberals to do what is right for everyone? I often wonder why people do not get furious about what Conservatives try to do to this country. Why are they not furious when so many important problems need real solutions and all they get from Conservatives are lies and rhetoric. Is it because they just dont know, they dont care, they dont want to know the truth, they dont believe problems can be solved, they dont want to think for themselves, or they dont read anymore? Maybe what we need is a yearly National Information Conference (NIC). Various colleges could be given subjects to report on. Each college could report on one or more subjects. Who would pick the colleges and the subjects? Maybe an executive board of educators. Politicians must not be involved in any way. College students are the best ones to do the research and report their ndings, because no one can threaten them with losing their jobs if they do not report their information exactly as the boss wants it to be reported, and politicians usually have trouble controlling them. However, some college students are heavily into politics, and care should be taken to make sure no one reports distorted information. One night a year, all the TV stations should donate time to air the reports. People must know the truth about things that affect their lives and the lives of their children. I know this is a dream, but it is a good dream, like when people dreamed of a United Nations. Sometimes dreams come true.

Conservatives always think they are absolutely right and that they are perfect. They are perfectPERFECT EVIL. They say things that sound good, but when you really dig deep and analyze what they say, you can nd the truth. Conservative beliefs are bad. They are evil, and they hurt people and this planet. If you do not believe what I have written is the truth, that is ne with me. Go out and nd the truth, get the facts, do some research, prove what I said is wrong. Just do not rely on what Conservatives tell you to believe. I know I cannot change the minds of many people, but maybe I can get a few people to think and ask questions and not hate so much. Maybe more women will stop voting for men and Conservatives. The end . . . maybe the beginning.
