V Project Title : Impact of Pratham initiatives on the field level
staff in Kutch, Gujarat.

Objective: The objective of the study was to study the impact of Pratham
initiatives on the field level staff since they joined the organization
Scope of the study: The scope of the study comprised studying the impact of
Pratham on the field level staff particularly the supervisors and the taluka in-
charge functionaries of Anjar, Bhuj, Bhachau, and Rapar of Kutch district. The
study confined to variables such as leadership, expressiveness, decision
making, leadership, independence, self esteem, risk taking, adaptability after
they joined the organization.
Methodology: The methodology used for the study was group discussions and
informal interviews with the respondents. Use of questionnaire was done for
their psychological test and day to day working in the organization. In-depth
interviews were conducted with a few key respondents.
Sources of data: The major sources of primary data were the questionnaire,
the group discussions carried out with the functionaries of Pratham. The
secondary data comprised the documents available from Pratham.
Major findings: There was a visible change of 18% in self esteem of the staff,
21% change in decision making, 22.7%in risk taking, 22% in independence,
25% in sensitivity of the organization towards its employees, 27% in
adaptability of the employees towards the needs and requirements of the
organization but there was not much of a change in expressiveness and
leadership of the employees which was only to the extent of 7% and 5%
respectively. Rapar was the centre in which there was the highest change as
compared with the rest of the centres.
Limitations of the study: The time limit of two years since Pratham started
functioning in Kutch is too short a period to assess the impact. The self-
assessment tool can lead to the social desirability error in it. Gujarati language
at times was a limitation to understand certain nuances.
Recommendations: The recommendations given by me after the entire study,
was that the organization should arrange for correspondence courses for its
employees so that they obtain graduate degree. Besides there is a need for
management development training programmes for them from time to time in
the areas related to their work. The field level staff should get more chance of
interaction with their superiors. To retain good employees the hygiene issues
such as salary, working conditions should not be ignored. Timely feedback

ii
should be given to the employees so that they can work upon it and improve
their performance.
