All last week work was going on to construct the new Reception outdoor area. Already on the wall there are number of different activities to help with the childrens learning like an abacus and clock. The new area has a log circle which will be a mini-beast investigation area. There is an A frame which will hold hanging musical instruments, as well as the usual climbing frame and slide. There are tables with games on and the play area now has a car park marked out to store the various tricycles and bikes. We are just waiting for some turf to be laid. Year one also have an outdoor area under their veranda for large play activities.

Brampton Primary is a restorative school where the initial response to conflict is to find a solution where things are put right, the victims needs are met whilst also meeting the needs of the wrong doer and meet all the schools responsibilities.

Last Thursday a number of children from Year 5 and 6 undertook Peer Mediator Training as part of our Restorative Practices behaviour programme. They learnt all about what it means to be a peer mediator; A Peer Mediator is a person who helps to keep schools a safe and happy place. Being a Peer Mediator means that you care about the other pupils in your schoolthe way they feel, the way they are treated and the way they treat each other. Being a Peer Mediator means that you have to show that you care. Peer Mediator must never bully other pupils, or ignore bullying wherever it occurs. Peer Mediator must try to include not exclude. Peer Mediator should always be on the look out for pupils who seem unhappy, lonely or lost. Peer Mediator are good listeners who know who to ask for helpthey do not gossip about the things that other pupils confide in them. Peer Mediator always ask for help when problems seem difficult or dangerous. Peer Mediator support each other. Our Peer Mediator scheme is designed to give pupils the skills to deal with some of the problems faced both in and out of school, such as bullying, making friends and getting help when they need it. The training gave them help to; Make friends Solve some of the problems that crop up in everyday life Listen to others Befriend other children Support each other Recognise and report bullying Know where to get help when they need it. Once they have developed these skills they will be able to help others in school who are lonely, lost or unhappy by listening and befriending, getting information and going with them to get help from an adult. They are not asked or expected to give advice or to take on the problems of other pupils. Sometimes Peer Mediators may be asked to help resolve conflict between other pupils, most likely when they are working as mediators in classrooms or on duty in the playground helping staff make a happy playground. They have been trained to use the same restorative questions that staff use. What happened? What were you thinking when this happened? Who has been upset by this? How could we put this right? Is the matter resolved or do we need to talk to a member of staff? At Brampton we use restorative language because it helps us; communicate with people in a friendly way; shows we care; allows us to ask questions in a positive way; ask questions that are hard to ignore; helps us sort out problems; does not make people feel ignored and if something has gone wrong restorative language helps put things right. The children really enjoyed their training day and cant wait to get more involved supporting younger children.

Peanut Allergies Please can we remind everyone that we are a Peanut Free school in our cooked meals and we ask parents not to put any nuts or items containing nuts in their childs packed lunches. Thank you Junior Fruit We encourage all juniors who want it to have a piece of fruit at morning play. We ask that this isnt kept in their packed lunch box as it means numbers of children in rummaging through the lunch box trolleys looking for their box. This has caused other boxes to be disturbed. Children are asked to take their fruit into the classroom where it will be eaten later in the morning. Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation. Governor News Next weeks open evenings will be an opportunity for parents to meet with our governors. They will be in the corridor near the hall so please come and say hello. Boys Football Congratulations to Mr Capelli and his Boys football team. Last week they played their first round cup match against Belvedere Juniors and they won 8-0. The goals scorers were Jamie Paterson, Ronnie Sweeney and hat tricks from Max Berrow and Mark Hawes. Mr Capellis man of the match was goal keeper James Pullen for excellent play in keeping a clean score sheet. Good luck for the second round. Mr Kempster will be proud!!
