The Weight of Coke vs.

The Weight of Diet Coke Abstract In progress

Introduction According to peoples beliefs, Diet Coke is a better choice than regular Coke since it is sugar free. Since the ingredients are different between the two, people also believe there is a weight difference. I am a scientist that is going to be testing the peoples beliefs. The purpose of this study is to determine if there really is a weight difference between Diet Coke and Coke. Prior studies have proven that Coke weighed less than Diet Coke. Since I will be conducting an experiment of my own, I believe Diet Coke would be the one to weigh less. Methods Procedure I decided to use a simple random sample for this study. The population for Coke was 42 and 64 for Diet Coke. I used TC Stats, a data analysis program designed for the iPad, to generate a random sample of 20 for each drink. Measures This study was conducted using an electric weight scale measuring in grams. Each time a new soda can was weighed, the scale was zeroed out to make sure the weight recorded was recorded properly. Participants 20 cans of Coke and 20 cans of Diet Coke were used in this study (n=20). The mean for Coke weighed in at 386.026 grams and the median at 386.055 grams. The mean for Diet Coke was 370.935 grams and the median was calculated at 370.855 grams.

Table 1: Summary statistics weights of Coke and Diet Coke

The minimum weight for Coke was 383.400 grams and the maximum weight was 388.970 grams. The minimum weight for Diet Coke was 367.920 and the maximum weight was 374.080.

Box and Whisker plot of Diet Coke and Coke side by side In the above box and whisker plot, Diet Coke is shown as a bell shaped graph. Coke is looks more uniform. Below are histograms to have more of a visual and to better understand the shapes.

Results I am 95% confident that the true mean is between 370.1020 and 371.7690 for the weight of Diet Coke. I am 95% confident that the true mean is between 385.2359 and 386.8152 for the weight of Coke.
