• Behind every great film lies a great vision.
• Before films can be made, before the screenwriter
can put pen to paper every film needs a vision.
• This vision is what sets great filmmakers apart from
the rest.
• There is no recipe to success, however there are
several concepts that can help you to conceptualise
your vision.
• At this early stage it is wise to remember the indie
dictum of creating a film within your limitations –
• Think always about how many characters, locations,
props etc are going to be required for you to
complete your production.
• Here is an extract from the movie Tape, directed by
Richard Linklater that highlights this indie dictum;
one location, 3 actors, very few props...

central character’s

ingenuity, etc.
• Make sure that your story idea contains these
elements, and then you are ready to think about
scene structure.
SCENE STRUCTURE
• Break your story into sections, using location as the
dividing element.
• The locations used in a film form the fundamental
structure upon which every other detail is laid.
• Make a list of the primary scenes of the film as you
imagine them, and denote them by the location in
which they would be filmed.
• It may be difficult at this stage to understand how
many scenes should be in a film and I’m not about to
tell you that there is a ‘perfect number’, but as an
exercise for the beginner filmmaker you can try the
following formula.
SCENE FORMULA
• For a 30 minute film,
formulate a story that utilises
10 locations, or "set-
pieces" (average 3 minutes
apiece).
