CHAPTER : 3 VERSE : 110

You are now the best people brought forth for (the guidance and reform of) mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. Had the People of the Book believed it were better for them.
The Prophet and his followers are informed that they are being assigned the guidance and leadership of the world, a position the Bani-Israel had been snatched off because they had shown themselves unsuitable. The Muslims were charged with this responsibility because of their competence. They were the best people in terms of character and morals and had developed in theory and in practice the qualities essential for truly righteous leadership, namely the spirit and practical commitment to promoting good and suppressing evil and the acknowledgement of the One True God as their Lord and Master. In view of the task entrusted to them, they had to become conscious of their responsibilities and avoid the mistakes committed by their predecessors.

The best word

is the book of Allah, and the best guidance is the guidance shown by Muhammad ...
Reported by Muslim

Our Prophet said

"When any one of you sees anything that is disapproved (of by Allah), let him change it with his hand. If he is not able to do so, then let him change it with his tongue. And if he is not able to do so, then let him change it with his heart, though that is the weakest (kind of) faith." [Reported by Muslim]

The ProphetsMasjidinMadina

Prophet Muhammad gave an example of people sailing on a boat having an upper deck and a lower deck. The people from the lower deck require water and request water from the people of the upper deck. The people from the upper deck refuse water so the people from the lower deck decide to make a hole on the floor of the ship and get water from the sea. Prophet said, "If the people from the upper deck don't stop the people at the bottom from making a hole, the ship will sink and all the people travelling will drown." [Reported Mishkt]
Similarly, if people do not prohibit evil and sin in the society, the entire society - innocent and evil - will equally suffer.

Devoted Companion:

Tufail bin Amar Doosi

May Allah be pleased with him

Wicked people adopt many ways to suppress the truth. One of their methods is to spread false rumors against the person who calls to the truth. They try to stop the people from coming into contact with such person and let them not listen to him. Those who do not know the truth fall an easy prey to such false propaganda and keep themselves away from such person. But at the same time it is also a fact that as and when people come to know the truth and it appeals to their good sense, they follow the truth with spirit. The case of Tufail bin Amar Doos is an illuminating example of the fact stated above. Tufail was the chief of a prosperous tribe of Yemen called Doos. By profession he was a merchant. He often visited Makka in connection with his business. He was a poet also and had very good relation with the Makkans. When the Holy Prophetinvited the Makkans to follow the path of truth and embrace Islam, Tufail happened to be present in Makka. His friends extended to him hospitality and entertainment as usual. But they gave him a warning also. They said: Beware of the person called Muhammad. Do not listen to him. Otherwise you will fall prey to him. His discourse is so charming that anyone who listens to him follows him. He has played havoc in our city and has ruined our peace. You are our guest, so we have given a piece of advice; otherwise you are intelligent enough to know what is good or bad. The friends misled Tufail in such a manner that he said to himself, they are my well-wishers, what ever they say must be true. Why should I meet that man Muhammad! Then he plugged both of his ears with pads of cotton so that he could not hear the voice of the Prophet. But he was destined by Allah to be blessed with Islam and all these devices proved useless. One day as he passed by the Kaba
Page 3

he saw the Prophet saying his prayers. The recitation of Quranic verses reached his ears. He stopped to listen to it as the charm attracted him. He said to himself, what a fool I am ! I am myself a good poet and can judge very well the standard and quality of a piece of literature, why shoulnt I listen and talk to him. If it is worth appreciation I must acknowledge it with open heart; if it is something worthless then I will certainly not fall a prey to him. Tufail stopped near the Prophet and listened attentively to the Quranic verses recited by him. After the prayers when the Prophet proceeded towards his house, Tufail followed him, met him at his residence and told him whatever the Makkans had said about him, and asked to recite verses from the Quran. The Prophetat first told him about Islam and its teaching and then recited some verses from the Quran. When Tufail heard the holy verses, he was struck with awe. Suddenly he exclaimed, By Allah! my ears never heard any verses better than his before; nor have I ever known a religion more attractive than Islam. I accepted with all my heart the teaching and commandment of the true religion of Allah. After embracing Islam, Tufail returned to Yemen. He had learnt the teachings of the Prophet. He, therefore, started propagating Islam in his country. In the first instance, he invited his whole family to Islam all of whom accepted it. After that all the members of his family began to work for Islam. But they gained little success in their mission. Hence he again went to Makka. He met the Prophet and requested him to pray to Allah for guiding the people the people of Yemen to the right path. The Prophet prayed and then said to Tufail invite the people to Islam politely and affectionately. Tufail returned home with the new instruction from the Prophet. He found it receptive and within a short period most of people of his tribe turned Muslims. During the caliphate of AbuBakr , his longfelt desire to die as martyr was fulfilled, in the battle of Yamama. May Allah be pleased with him.

The Teacher
CHANGING STUDENT-TEACHER RELATIONSHIP
~ EDITOR Once upon a time there lived a teacher with many students seeking knowledge through him. One
day one of his students was late in attending the class. On enquiring, he said to the teacher that it took him time to set his hair. The teacher ordered him to shave his head and attend the class tomorrow. And the student was in the class, with his head shaved carrying no hatred towards his teacher. In the present century, when a teacher had asked the students to apply oil and attend the school. The students disliked the order, but due to fear of the teacher they somehow attended the teachers class with oil on their heads. After some generations have passed, the teacher now does not order the students to apply oil, not because the students will not obey but because they will have a tiff with him. Scenes of students arguing with teachers are not uncommon in colleges now-a-days, but now they are also increasing in schools day by day. Things are changing such drastically. But why such an unpleasant change?? The Prophet said:The learned teacher and the taught are both participants in

righteousness, and in the remaining people there is no aspect of righteousness .[IbnMajah] But today due to commercialization of education, an idea of capitalism, the students think the fees they pay buys them knowledge. They learn only to earn money and they are taught by the teachers only for money. Either of these two or even by the share of both, the society has been degraded. Had they known the virtues of learning and teaching in Islam, such a degradation would never occur.

REGARD FOR TEACHERS STORY

aroon Al-Rashid was a renowned king. He had two sons Ameen and Mamun. Once their teacher had to leave for some urgent work while giving lessons to the two pupils. Each of them wanted to bring the slippers of their teacher to him. Seeing them quarrel, the teacher asked them to bring one slipper each. Haroon Al-Rashid, on hearing this, was immensely pleased with his sons. He called and rewarded them richly. These vey youngsters, later on, became kings. Such was the character displayed by the students and their parents towards the teacher.

The Companions of Sabbat

It seems that fishes were determined in their course of action. Every Saturday they would come in thousands over the surface of the sea. Anyone could catch them without the help of net. On other days they would not be seen anywhere. One would feel as if this portion of sea had no fishes. Of course a strange phenomenon. The action of fishes used to take place with the will of Allah. In fact there lived a nation near sea which had requested for a day exclusively meant for worship. Allah had selected Saturday called Sabbath, for them and asked them to be busy in His worship the whole day and not to do any worldly work. They were prevented from fishing also that day. As long as they remained steadfast and righteous, they kept themselves busy in worship the whole day. Gradually degradation crept into their life. They began to transgress and disobey Allahs orders. They became slaves of their personal wishes. Love for wealth made them arrogant. Above all worshiping on this day became a burden for them and even if they performed prayers against their will due to fear of their elders or merely as a ritual. The transgressors and arrogant decided to fish on Saturdays, made themselves the target of Allahs wrath. Despite some people were on the right path. They were of two types. Among them some became quite hopeless reform and welfare of the transgressors. They observed the sanctity of Sabbath and remained busy in prayers. But they neither ordered the wrong doers towards virtue nor did they stop them from breaking the law. There were some other people, who not only remained steadfast and adhered to the right path but also would not tolerPage 5

ate the transgression of brethren. They were not content with their own well being but called the wrongdoers towards the right path. But the evil deeds were so much dear to the transgressors, that they would not listen to any wise advice. Rather they would turn the callers of the right path. The first group would say to the other: Why do you preach to people whom Allah will destroy or punish. The preachers or the second group said: We have to do our duty. What will we do when Allah asks on the Day of Judgment as to what we did on seeing evil spread on earth. To discharge our duty to Lord and by chance they may fear Allah. How true was their reply! No one is powerful enough to banish evils from society. However everyone is accountable to God. Allah is above everything in the universe. He does not require any gains out of such acts. No prayers, worship can lessen His Stature or add anything to His Greatness. If we worship Allah, it ultimately will be helpful to us. The people who did not accept any good advice and also those who did not enjoin the orders of Allah, both were punished. Allah decided their fate. They were turned into monkeys and apes, by Allahs order: Be ye apes, despised and rejected. You might wonder how a man can turn into monkeys or apes. It is strange but not impossible for Allah. Lessons: *If Allah has guided you to the right path then you should not keep the message of Allah with ourselves. We should spread it, to our possibility. *Do not get disheartened if people pay no heed to your wise advice. Keep doing your job.

Be Creative
PANTOGRAPH
Do you feel difficulty in copying diagrams into your record? Here is an instrument you can create to lessen your difficulty. With this PANTOGRAPH, you can copy drawings at one-half or one-third their original size. You will find this instrument useful for making small copies of maps and diagrams. Constructional details are shown in the diagram given below. Be sure to calculate and mark the positions of the holes accurately. Otherwise your drawings will be distorted. When the pantograph has been assembled, move the tracer over the picture you want to copy. The weighted pencil will then trace out a copy. The size of the copy will depend on the way the instrument is assembled. As shown, it will reproduce drawings at half-size. For third-size reproduction, put the pencil into the other cotton reel, and bolt the bar AF to holes B and E. Always ensure that the joints are not too tight or loose.

The Fecundating (productive) Winds
And We send the fecundating winds, then cause water to descend from the sky, therewith providing you with water in abundance. (Chapter al-Hijr(15): 22)
In this verse, it is pointed out that the first stage in the formation of rain is wind. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the only relationship between the wind and the rain that was known, was that the wind drove the clouds. However, modern meteorological findings have demonstrated the "fecundating" role of the wind in the formation of rain. Another piece of information about the fecundating aspect of wind is the role it plays in the fertilization of plants. Many plants on the Earth ensure their survival by spreading their pollen by means of the wind. Many open pollinated plants, pine and palm trees and similar, as well as flowering seed plants and all grasses are fertilized by the wind. The wind takes the pollen from the plants and aids fertilization by carrying the pollen to other plants of the same species. This effect of wind on plants was unknown until very recently. When it was realized, however, that plants are divided into males and females, the fertilizing effect of the wind was also understood.
