ROUSH CleanTech Propane Loaner Van Is Still Available

Wed like to thank all of our participating members once again for such a wonderful turnout at the SC4/ROUSH CleanTech Propane Technology Demo and Vehicle Loaner Program launch. The El Paso County Fleet facility was filled to the brim with more than 50 visitors from around our region, and we were even able to garner the attention of several local media outlets who spotlighted propane and the vehicle loan program later in the day on TV and in print. Thank you again to ROUSH CleanTech for providing food for the event, AmeriGas for their presentation and refueling demo, Metro Lawn for their presentation and mower demo, and Schwanns for their participation as well! While weve been able to secure borrowers for the van for approximately the next two months, ROUSH CleanTech was given us the ability to extend our loaner program, so if your fleet is interested in testing it out theres still time to do so. Please contact SC4 Marketing Coordinator Dianne Bertini at 719-213-5001 or Dianne@cleancitiescolorado.org today for more information!

Updated Electric Vehicle Grant Funding Details Released!

The Department of Energy has released the Clean Cities Funding Opportunity, with an application deadline of 6/13/11, the grant project must be between $250,000 and $500,000, and that these are solely for electric vehicle charging projects. We are working with our fellow Colorado Clean Cities Coalitions about the best way to proceed with partnering on this opportunity as we do not want to compete with one another for these relatively small funds. The President has a goal of putting 1 million electric drive vehicles on the road in the United States by 2015. In support of this goal and emphasizing electricity as a transportation fuel, this funding seeks projects to plan and implement policies

for the development of local/regional electric charging infrastructure, including implementation of local policies, procedures, and incentives that facilitate that development. The planning and policy activities will prepare communities for successful deployment and implementation of plug-in electric drive vehicles. Overall, this effort will help to decrease the nations dependence on petroleum and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by accelerating the deployment of plug-in electric drive vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment. The funds are meant to serve as a pilot program to stimulate community based EV infrastructure readiness planning and implementation activities

Chrysler Readies CNG Vehicles For The U.S.

Chrysler says it will bring CNG vehicles stateside by 2017. The carmaker is in the process of purchasing Fiat Autos, which has successfully sold CNG vehicles throughout Europe and South America for years. While the company has not detailed which models will include CNG options (or how the vehicles will be branded) they have said CNG will be available in both cars and trucks.
Chrsylers purchase of Fiat led to speculation the U.S. carmaker would bring CNG vehicles stateside. The company has now confirmed the plan.

move last month, saying "the technology is very actively being worked on." He said, however, that the company's CNG vehicles would arrive "by 2017," which will disappoint those hoping that Chrysler would join Honda in offering natural-gas powertrains in the near future. Honda is the only maker to offer natural-gas passenger vehicles in the U.S., selling about 2,000 of its Civic GX model each year. The automaker has said it plans to expand GX availability to all 50 states in 2012. (Courtesy of Discovery News)

DOD Calls For More Biofuels Usage in Various Vehicles

This C-17 test last August shows a first for any Department of Defense aircraft. The plane is flying on a 50 percent mix of JP-8 (conventional jet fuel) blended with 25 percent renewable biofuel and 25 percent fuel derived from the Fischer-Tropsch process, which is essentially liquefied coal or natural gas.

Fuel Economy Tip Of The Month

The Defense Logistics Agency confirmed that the U.S. Department of Defense is readying plans to purchase several hundred million gallons of drop-in advanced biofuels by 2016, citing an expected demand of 336 million gallons from the Navy and 587 million gallons from the Air Force. While the news is significant for the biofuels industry, analysts likened the government, although a large customer, to a large commercial airline in terms of purchasing power, and cautioned biofuels producers that the Department of Defense would be a large buyer but not in enough quantity to singlehandedly drive a market. At the same time, Chris Tindal of the US Navy said that the Navy would undertake a biorefinery development analysis to see how the Navy should participate in the development of advanced biofuels to ensure sufficient production and the lowest price for advanced biofuels. Its also not the first major move the DOD has made into advanced fuels technology. In February, the department launched the first of several waste-to-fuel symposia designed to explore the feasibility of the technology for the government. Avoid Excessive Idling

When idling, you get 0 mpg, contribute to air pollution, and cause engine wear. It is more efficient to turn the engine off while you wait and restart the car when your wait is over. The California Energy Commission (CEC) recommends that you shut off your car anytime you are waiting for more than 10 seconds. CEC asserts that an idling vehicle consumes as much as 1 gallon of fuel per hour. The savings could translate into more than $150 per year.

CSU, GM Partner & DOE To Turn Chevy Malibu Into A Hybrid

The U.S. Department of Energy, General Motors and Colorado State University are teaming up for a three-year project for CSU students to re-engineer the Chevrolet Malibu into a hybrid electric or fuel-cell vehicle, The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports. Colorado State is one of 16 universities nationwide chosen for the "EcoCar 2" program. The goal is to reduce the car's environmental impact without compromising performance, safety and consumer appeal. CSU says that students will develop the design in the first year and spend the other two years converting, testing and integrating the design.

EPA Streamlines Car And Truck Fuel Conversion Systems Regulations

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has updated rules making it easier for manufacturers to sell fuel conversion systems. The conversion systems allow vehicles to run on alternative fuels, which may appeal to consumers concerned about energy security, fuel costs, or emissions. These changes reflect the EPAs interest in encouraging innovation and spurring conversions that optimize clean air and clean energy technologies. It is also in keeping with the presidents January 18, 2011 executive order, which directs agencies to identify and consider regulatory approaches that reduce burdens and maintain flexibility and freedom of choice for the public. The revised procedures will vary based on the age of the vehicle or engine being converted. EPA has found that the procedures for older vehicles and engines can be streamlined while maintaining environmental safeguards. As opposed to a onesize fits all approach, EPAs process is now based on whether a vehicle or engine is new, intermediate age, or outside its expected useful life. City Of Colorado Springs Puts 1st Hybrid Truck To Work Fixing Potholes
While tighter city budgets have not allowed for much equipment replacement in recent years, the City of Colorado Springs is still working hard to green its fleet. The benefit is that a recent vehicle investment is not only a lot greener than older equipment, but it also stands to help reduce costs in the long run. The city recently purchased a diesel electric hybrid truck with improved fuel efficiency 30 percent to 40 percent over existing vehiclesand reduced engine emissions. Diesel emissions are completely eliminated when the hybrid truck operates equipment solely on the truck's battery power instead of allowing the engine to idle.

Crews are using the truck to perform pothole repairs, which can be reported to the cty by calling 385-ROAD, emailing streetdivision@springsgov.com, submitting a request online or downloading an app for your iPhone.
