City of Boulder Debuts Additional L2 Chargers at Rec Center

On Monday August 15th, more than 120 people gathered at the South Boulder Recreation Center for the ribbon cutting on two new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations. The Level II charging stations are part of a larger project at South Boulder Rec that includes a photovoltaic system and solar thermal installation and are the first of 40 EV charging stations that the City of Boulder plans to install by next year. EV drivers can charge their car for a fee of $1 per hour. After the ribbon cutting, the three Colorado Coalitions convened a Statewide stakeholder meeting which was attended by nearly 50 stakeholders

Colorado Clean Cities Coalitions Secure $500,000 EV Grant!

The Department of Energy has announced that the joint Southern, Denver Metro, and Northern Colorado Clean Cities authored grant request for electric vehicle implementation planning has been awarded $500,000 for its effort to develop a statewide EV roadmap. We are extremely excited by the news, and thankful to all of the stakeholders who have committed to helping our three organizations develop the grant request on a very short timeline earlier this summer. The President has a goal of putting 1 million electric drive vehicles on the road in the United States by 2015. In support of this goal and emphasizing electricity as a transportation fuel, the DOE has sought projects to plan and implement policies for the development of local/regional electric charging infrastructure, including implementation of local policies, procedures, and incentives that facilitate that development. The planning and policy

activities will prepare communities for successful deployment and implementation of plug-in electric drive vehicles. Overall, this effort will help to decrease the nations dependence on petroleum and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by accelerating the deployment of plugin electric drive vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment. Projects to support community planning for plug-in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure will receive $8.5 million through Clean Cities across the country. The funding recipients range from communities with extensive EV planning experience to those eager to begin, but have not previously had the resources to do so. These projects will help communities address their specific needs, which include updating permitting processes, revising codes, training municipal personnel, promoting public awareness, or developing incentives, so that other stakeholders can learn best practices.

EPA: Record Biodiesel Production In July

The U.S. biodiesel industry continues to grow, touting just-released data from EPA showing that collective production reached a record 94.69 million gallons in July. "The latest monthly volume represents an all-time high for U.S. biodiesel production and marks the fourth consecutive month of record production," said National Biodiesel Board (NBB) Vice President of Federal Affairs Anne Steckel. According to EPA, in April, the biodiesel industry produced a collective 74.113 million gallons, increasing to 82.623 million gallons in May and 84.910 million gallons in June. The EPA data is for biomassbased diesel, almost entirely comprised of conventional biodiesel, with a small fraction of the gallons from renewable diesel, NBB noted. "The U.S. biodiesel industry has already far surpassed its 2010 production volume of 315 million gallons last year," said Steckel. This is further proof that our industry is a rare bright spot in this struggling economy, and it shows that strong energy policy can go a long way toward putting people back to work." SoCal City Adds Propane To Streets Division Fleet

Fuel Economy Tip Of The Month

Southern Californias City of Cypress recently added two ROUSH CleanTech Ford F-250 pickups fueled by propane autogas for use in administering community street work such as asphalt repairs and refuse pick up. The vehicles were purchased through a local Ford dealership after city officials learned about the benefits of propane autogas at an Air Quality Management District (AQMD) seminar. The City of Cypress is always looking for opportunities to put green vehicles in our fleet, and its important to move toward greener fleets when possible, said Doug Dancs, the citys director of public works. With the existing fueling infrastructure in place and funding through the AQMD, the City of Cypress purchased the ROUSH CleanTech Ford trucks for its department of public works. The trucks emit 20% less nitrogen oxide and up to 60 percent less carbon monoxide than gasoline-powered vehicles. About 90 percent of U.S. propane supplies are domestically produced. Historically, propane autogas costs 30 to 40% less than gasoline and offers reduced operating and maintenance costs due to its clean-burning properties. Avoid Excessive Idling

When idling, you get 0 mpg, contribute to air pollution, and cause engine wear. It is more efficient to turn the engine off while you wait and restart the car when your wait is over. The California Energy Commission (CEC) recommends that you shut off your car anytime you are waiting for more than 10 seconds. CEC asserts that an idling vehicle consumes as much as 1 gallon of fuel per hour. The savings could translate into more than $150 per year.

Hyundai Has High Hopes For Hydrogen

Hyundai is hyping hydrogen, cruising cross-country in a fuelcell Tucson to turn people on to the fuel of the future. The automaker has been experimenting with hydrogen for more than a decade, and it is conducting a 4,500-mile tour through 15 states in the Tucson ix FCEV and to promote its advancements and advocacy of the technology. This is the companys thirdgen Tucson fuel cell vehicle, and Hyundai let us put a few miles on the car during its drive through San Francisco. Hyundai says the 100-kilowatt fuel cell is the same size as the 2.4-liter engine in a conventional Tucson. The fuel cell and motor are under the hood, and the 21 kilowatt-hour battery is under the floor. A tank at the rear holds 144 liters of hydrogen

The Hyundai Hydrogen Tucson is on a 15-state trek to promote the alternative fuel.

at 700 bar (roughly 10,000 PSI). Everything is packaged tidily out of the way, leaving plenty of interior room. On the road, the machine drives like any other Tucson, but with a little less power. The motor is good for 100 kilowatts (134 horsepower), which is considerably less

than the 165 horsepower provided by a Tucson GL with a four-banger. But theres loads of torque and, of course, nothing more noxious than potable water coming out of the tailpipe. (From www.wired.com)

Waste Management Adds CNG Fueling Station For Sale To California Fleets
A new compressed natural gas fueling station has been opened in Santa Ana, California by Waste Management of Orange County. PetroCard operates the Clean N Green station and will sell CNG to commercial fleets including transit agencies, school districts, taxis, cities, and municipalities.
