activities will prepare communities for successful deployment and implementation of plug-in electric drive vehicles. Overall, this effort will help to decrease the nations dependence on petroleum and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by accelerating the deployment of plugin electric drive vehicles and electric vehicle supply equipment. Projects to support community planning for plug-in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure will receive $8.5 million through Clean Cities across the country. The funding recipients range from communities with extensive EV planning experience to those eager to begin, but have not previously had the resources to do so. These projects will help communities address their specific needs, which include updating permitting processes, revising codes, training municipal personnel, promoting public awareness, or developing incentives, so that other stakeholders can learn best practices.

A record 94.69 million gallons of biodiesel was produced in the U.S. in July. Its an all-time high for the fourth month in a row.
Southern Californias City of Cypress recently added two ROUSH CleanTech Ford F-250 pickups fueled by propane autogas for use in administering community street work such as asphalt repairs and refuse pick up. The vehicles were purchased through a local Ford dealership after city officials learned about the benefits of propane autogas at an Air Quality Management District (AQMD) seminar. The City of Cypress is always looking for opportunities to put green vehicles in our fleet, and its important to move toward greener fleets when possible, said Doug Dancs, the citys director of public works. With the existing fueling infrastructure in place and funding through the AQMD, the City of Cypress purchased the ROUSH CleanTech Ford trucks for its department of public works. The trucks emit 20% less nitrogen oxide and up to 60 percent less carbon monoxide than gasoline-powered vehicles. About 90 percent of U.S. propane supplies are domestically produced. Historically, propane autogas costs 30 to 40% less than gasoline and offers reduced operating and maintenance costs due to its clean-burning properties. The Hyundai Hydrogen Tucson is on a 15-state trek to promote the alternative fuel.
at 700 bar (roughly 10,000 PSI). Everything is packaged tidily out of the way, leaving plenty of interior room. On the road, the machine drives like any other Tucson, but with a little less power. The motor is good for 100 kilowatts (134 horsepower), which is considerably less
than the 165 horsepower provided by a Tucson GL with a four-banger. But theres loads of torque and, of course, nothing more noxious than potable water coming out of the tailpipe. (From www.wired.com)
Waste Management Adds CNG Fueling Station For Sale To California Fleets
A new compressed natural gas fueling station has been opened in Santa Ana, California by Waste Management of Orange County. PetroCard operates the Clean N Green station and will sell CNG to commercial fleets including transit agencies, school districts, taxis, cities, and municipalities. CNG is addressing two of the biggest imperatives for fleet owners today reducing costs and decreasing emissions, said Steve Tolton, CEO of PetroCard. Our collaboration with Waste Management at this facility makes it more convenient for fleet owners to save money at the pump while shrinking their carbon footprint from operations. Waste Management has also added new infrastructure to fuel its existing fleet of CNG recycling and trash collection vehicles at the Santa Ana site. The company currently operates the largest fleet of heavy-duty natural gas trucks in North America. We are dedicated to doing business in the most sustainable way possible as well as offering our customers more ways to live green, said Jason Rose, general manager and vice president of Waste Management of San Diego and Orange County. GRANT SOLICITATIONS
EPA FY12 National Environmental Info Exchange Network Grant Program Eligible Entities: State and local governments, U.S. territories, federally recognized tribes, others. EPA, states, tribes, and territories are working together to implement the Exchange Network, a secure, Internet- and standards-based way to support electronic data reporting, sharing, and integration of both regulatory and non-regulatory environmental data. The Exchange Network Grant Program provides funding to states, tribes, inter-tribal consortia, and territories to develop and implement the information technology and information management capabilities they need to actively participate in the Exchange Network. In FY 2012, EPA expects to award about $10,000,000 for 40 to 50 grants of up to $350,000. The exact number of grants will depend on the final amount of EPAs appropriation for the grant program, the number of applications submitted to EPA by the application deadline, the amounts of proposed budgets, and the outcome of application reviews. GATE Grant Awards $6.4 Million For Advance Automotive Technologies, $950K Comes To UCCS, CU-Boulder
The Department of Energys Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) initiative will award $6.4 million over the course of fi ve years to support seven Centers of Excellence at Am e r i c a n colleges, universities, and univers i t y affiliated research institutions. The awardees will focus on three critical automotive technology areas: hybrid propulsion, energy storage, and lightweight materials. By funding curriculum development and expansion as well as laboratory work, GATE allows higher education institutions to develop multidisciplinary training. As a result, GATE promotes the development of a skilled workforce of engineering professionals who will overcome technical barriers and help commercialize the next generation of advanced automotive technologies. Regents University in Colorado Springs was awarded more than $950,000 through the GATE funding. Their project will create the Innovative Drivetrains in Electric Automotive Technology Education (IDEATE) project, a partnership between The University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) and the University of Colorado, Boulder (CUBoulder) that will focus on graduate education in electric drivetrain vehicles. UCCS will develop two new courses on battery modeling for controls and on algorithm development for high-capacity battery pack controls. CU-Boulder will develop a new course in power electronics for electric drive vehicles, and will refresh an existing course to focus on design of adjustable speed alternating current drives.
