anksgiving is nally here, and I am ready to stu my face with good Southern food. I seriously look forward to this holiday all year long. I dont even wear jeans on the day of; I wear some type of leggings and UGGs out t, so I can fully enjoy it. After good food comes the fun. My family and I have a tradition every year at anksgiving; we play Monopoly! We start after dinner and nish up the next morning after breakfast and whoever wins gets a little trophy and bragging rights for one year, I hope your family has some tradition too deep down under all the stu ng and gravy! Give thanks for everything you have for you will never know when its gone. Check out our Justin Gaines missing person story, and our tips on how to stay safe.

Jasmine, when my boyfriend was over, he left the room with his cell phone on the couch. I was really tempted to go through his messages, is that bad? -Brittany Reyes

Katie, whens the best time to introduce a girlfriend to the family? Chris Montalvo

In all honesty, yes. What is the point of being in a relationship if youre not going to trust him? If you have any concerns with who he talks to, then bring it up to him for reassurance. Trust me, weve all been there before and trying to be sneaky about it will only make things worse. If youre that tempted to check, just leave the room too.

Im a pretty laid back guy, but Im very against the dinner and a movie clich. I really like outings that allow me to get to know the person as well as have some fun. Ive done hiking, and bon res. Big group outings can be a blast as well!

In some aspects, yes. Almost everyone have some sort of ego, and the male gender projects that ego more than females. Versus our emotions where the female gender expresses herself more than males. I think we all have pros and cons, and we cant live or live without one another.

From my experience, I have always met the parents in a casual manner. is is the holiday season which means there will be a lot of family in from out of town. If your parents have never met the girl then stay away from scaring her o with the shock of forever by involving her in all the family traditions that come with the holidays. Wait until after the holidays have passed and have a casual lunch date with your parents or a fun sporting event so everyone can see how much fun she is!

FOOTBALL
BULLDOGS VS. AUBURN
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12 (SANFORD STADIUM)

SPOTLIGHT
SEC CRAZINESS
The Bulldog football team has looked fantastic in spots, downing both Mississippi schools and shutting out Coastal Carolina. Theyve also looked overmatched, as they were against South Carolina and Boise State. Granted, those are two of the better teams in the country, so its a promising start to the Bulldogs season. The team was 3-2 at press time, with a pair of very winnable October games upcoming. We trust that the team hits 5-2 before heading down for the Cocktail Party. Aaron Murray is among the NCAA leaders in TD passes (13) and has been largely efficient (61.5 percent pass completion). The superfrosh Isaiah Crowell (see inset, right) has been good, accruing 515 yards on the ground as of press time. Three Bulldog pass-catchers had at least three scores. The balanced offense definitely gives us hope. The defense has looked good at times, with Jarvis Jones leading the way. Linebacker Christian Robinson notes an incredible improvement since their 0-2 start. Hopefully this Bulldog team will get things on the same page and rock and roll through the SEC schedule. See you in Atlanta, SEC West!
COOL CROWELL Super recruit Isaiah Crowell was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after his performance against the solid D of Mississippi State. He rushed for 104 yards (his third 100+ effort on the season) and paced the Bulldog offense to a big SEC win against a quality opponent. Hes been as good as advertised and the Bulldog offense will need to lean on him even more as SEC play gets to the nitty-gritty.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

In The Trenches Sure, Isaiah Crowell has been a beast thus far but hed be flat on his back if the big boys up front werent blocking well for him. First-year OL coach, Will Friend has done a great job with this group, as Crowell has averaged five yards per carry. As we all know, they grow em big in the South, and as we enter the difficult part of the SEC schedule, these guys will have to continue to dominate.

With everyone you meet, they are all really excited to learn, travel and get to know the country that they are in since that is part of the reason why they are involved. Being involved also helped me boost my con dence by being the president and getting to know all kinds of people.

HOT DJ
DJ SIFI

words: katie coon photos: katie coon + simon rimmer

he future of music is here and in the form of DJ SIFI. Simon Rimmer, a.k.a. DJ SIFI, has dedication, drive, talent and experience which are all key qualities that will take him far in the entertainment business. SIFI can turn any atmosphere into an ass-shaking, st pumping, lyric belting scene in a matter of just a few seconds. Rimmer has dedicated the past six years to perfecting and marketing his DJ skills all across the Southeast.

ASPIRES TO BECOME ONE OF THE BEST

Family of Entertainers
Since Rimmer was 15, he had become interested in the technical aspects of DJ-ing such as sound and lighting equipment but he knew one day he would want to take it further. When I was young, I used to put on shows with my sister she would be the singer and dancer and I would always provide the sound and lights, said Rimmer. Rimmer got his rst microphone at the age of six and later at age thirteen he worked for a local theatre group doing their lighting. I have always had a passion for music since I was really young. I just decided not to ignore that passion and drive, Rimmer stated about his beginnings as a DJ.

Inspired
Rimmer rst took note of the DJ business and entertainment aspect of it all when he attended a house party in Kennesaw, in 2005. ere was a fantastic DJ. Derek was his name. I was instantly hooked on the DJ business from that point and started learning the ropes from him, said Rimmer. I saved all my money and started purchasing DJ equipment piece by piece.

Aspiring To Be The Best

DJ SIFI aspires to become one of the best DJs in the club scene with inspirations such as DJ AM, DJ Riz, and DJ Sizzahands. Rimmer knows what it takes to make it to the top and get recognized. In one year, Rimmer hopes to build up his entertainment business enough to make it in L.A. or New York. I spent six months in 2008 as a DJ on a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, and I may consider doing one more cruise to get that international experience once more and travel the world, said Rimmer.

Simon Rimmer, 23 DJ Name: DJ SIFI Hometown: London, England

The Crowd
DJ-ing is a satisfying business to get into, but half of the battle is entertaining the crowd and knowing how to read them. DJ SIFI has a passion for entertaining and interacting with the crowd. Rimmer enthusiastically described his perfect night by saying, When I am able to get everyone up on the dance oor and keep the crowd moving to the music until the end of the night. It is great when people come up to me and give me compliments about my music, it furthers my creativity.

E IGBOKW YOR FOR MA

HOW THIS STUDENT IS GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

William Igbokwe is the ttest candidate
words: jasmine vallejo photos: steven granados

12 | NOVEMBER 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

harming. Trustworthy. Ripped. All great characteristics for the perfect politician, right? Well, those arent the only words to describe William Igbokwe. is twenty-two year old senior in college is a very goal-oriented and driven person. With aspirations of becoming Mayor of his hometown and attending law school after, William has potential that will be executed for the future. And hes starting now. Why did you make the decision to run for Mayor? I think what makes me the best option for Mayor of Jacksonville is my commitment to honoring the concerns of the citizens, my commitment to my goals as mayor and the energy and compassion that I have to ful ll all of the aforementioned. As Mayor of Jacksonville, I know I could really shake things up in a positive way and cater to the needs of all citizens, regardless of however theyve been categorized by arbitrary labels. Have you always known what you wanted to do after you nished college? Not immediately. It wasnt until this summer that I decided that Id bid for Mayor of Jacksonville in 2013. My logic is if Im an aspiring politician, why should I wait to start around the median age of what, fty? e youth shouldnt be disenfranchised from the political process in any aspect nor should it be an automatic disqualier for public o ce, especially since were next in line to inherit whatever the previous generation left for us. Id like a say in the a airs of my community as soon as possible. Do you think post-grad students have what it takes to get their experience in politics? I mean, of course. In fact, I think people should be engaging their local, state and national government earlier than that. I think its really easy for people to become disillusioned with their government when they havent established any type of relationship with government in the rst place. at opens the door up to instances where the rst time a citizen and their government have an encounter, its for an unpleasant reason. Early involvement and engagement of your government can help assuage disillusionment.

What do you hope to bring to the table while getting involved with politics? Id hope to bring the appeal of the youth participation to politics. A lot of people my age or younger feel disenfranchised from their own governments (local, state and national). In a country where the youth have so much energy and potential to o er, there is no reason that a disconnect should exist. Id like to bridge that gap between government and young people because obviously, both sides have much to gain from a strong relationship. Why do you think that gap has been present? Because our politicians neglect our youth and dont take their opinions (and sometimes their concerns seriously). So to close this gap, its on the heads of politicians to reach out to the voiceless and to our youth. What are your hobbies? I like reading current events, holding conversations about current events, debating current events, running, exercising, playing pick up games of whatever, shopping, writing, speaking in publicI mentioned I was boring earlier in this interview, right? Why are you so boring? Give me details. Im boring because I live a very routine, party free (for the most part) and drama free life. Im just under the impression that my lifestyle can be very unappealing to a lot of people in my age group. Im an introvert, for the most part. And I know sometimes we get a bad rap for being dull. Any love interest? Haha, yeah, there is one actually and shes great. Youll nd out more about her if/when we get married. In your last year in college, what would you like to do involving politics? I would like to volunteer with a campaign organization or a nonpro t organization. I really want to get my hands dirty in the local political scene and help out in any way that I can. Im not looking to make a huge impact on anything in particular. For now, I just want to learn.

10 Things You Dont Know About Me

COLLEGES Fittest Candidate

You want to be Americas most t congressman out there, so how would you win those votes? Well, obviously I would need to stay in shape. More importantly, Id need to pay some dues. I think soaring rhetoric from politicians can be a great thing because people need to feel inspired, especially when youre dealing with something like American politics, which can turn negative so quickly. But soaring rhetoric can turn into your worst enemy if you neglect to deliver. To win votes, Id try to energize and inspire a sizeable voting base but more importantly, Id follow that up by delivering. And delivering doesnt just mean drafting and passing legislation. I dont think civil servants are limited to the chambers of congress. Its okay for elected politicians to get their hands dirty with community service, town-hall meetings, etc. I dont believe in one dimensional political service. Have you always been interested in being t by running and working out? Lets put vanity aside. In the spring of 2002, my father has a minor stroke. I think that was the rst time I became very health conscious. While he recovered, I started researching ways to get him into healthy physical form. I introduced to him some exercises and dietary choices that I hoped would prevent him from succumbing to the effects of hypertension again. In doing so, I adopted the exercise routine to give him a support system. Later, my motivation developed into keeping myself healthy in general. Its stuck ever since. Ive heard you have some killer abs. What is your secret to staying t? I work out twice a day for a combined three hours. In the morning, I work on my abdominal muscles and wrap it up with cardio (1.5 miles and 1000 jump rope.) In the evening, I work on my upper body. I make an earnest e ort to eat well but Im in college, I cant cook and I have to desire to learn. So I watch my caloric intake and make sure it doesnt exceed more than half of what I burned throughout the day. I guess Id attribute to discipline and consistency to keeping me in shape.

How is your dad doing now? Hes doing well, thank you. I just saw him and the rest of my family members recently for my 22nd birthday. Has your father played a huge part in your life? Is he a man you would want to become? Hes played a huge role but not in the ways many would guess. Hes a very quiet and thoughtful man. So on the surface, he and I are very di erent. Where Im very outspoken and loud, hes the opposite. Hes also a very shy and patient man. Nonetheless, Ive learned a lot through my father through his actions. I dont know a more responsible or standup guy and Id be hard pressed to nd one more intelligent. I know his struggles as the rst of ten children growing up in Imo State, Nigeria and the struggles he continued to face when he emigrated to the US to make a better life for himself and his family. I have the utmost respect for him and everything hes been through. Hes taught me diligence, patience and a calculated approach to lifes problems through his actions alone. I couldnt have asked for a better father. What major issues would you focus on for college students? Well since healthcare and education often disproportionately a ect college students/youth, those two issues would be high priority in my relationship as a politician with college students. Weve discussed my beef with healthcare a bit, but I recently read an article (I think it was in the Wall Street Journal) that proclaimed that more than at any point in this nations history college students are depending on student loans to attend school. I think that says a lot of secondary education in this country and some of the problems its facing. I dont think it should cost an arm and a leg to further educate the nations brightest. Lest we forget, our college graduates will be in charge of running this country in the near future. Itd be great if they could complete and pay for school. What is one thing youd change about America? e wealth disparity in this country is disgusting and exacerbates a lot of other issues the country is currently facing. So, without a doubt, that would be the one thing I change about this

Need workout tips? Tweet Will! @wigbo

Since healthcare and education often disproportionately affect college students, those two issues would be high priority as a politician.

Where Do You See Yourself In Five Years?

God willing, Im still seeing the positive effects of having served a term as Mayor of Jacksonville followed by having just nished law school. Ill be calculating where best to apply the newly acquired skills Ive gotten from law school.

country. In fact, its a wonder that little media attention has been given to what is, quite frankly, a national crisis. An embarrassing one, actually. Imagine yourself at the age of 50. What are you doing? Ill be serving the United States government and my constituents in some form or fashion. Ill be watching my children grown into responsible, caring, young adults and rejoicing with my wife because we have the house to ourselves. Ill be maintaining a close relationship with siblings and a few close friends and Ill be rereading this interview thinking aloud wow, I was this guy thirty years ago? What do you wish you would have accomplished by then? To be a great father, a great politician, a person who put a dent in wealth disparity, who challenged the status quo on equality and dis-

crimination and a man who is still relatively t at least in the eyes of my wife. You mention wife and kids often. Are you a family oriented type of guy? Very. My immediate family members are the most important people in my life and that will never change. I want to create the same time of strong bond and connection for my children and what will be their family. What is the best advice your mom or dad has given you? If you want it, you can have it. Just work for it. And pray. -Mom What are your goals and aspirations? I have three major goals in life. e rst concerns my family, present and future. I want my parents and siblings to be proud of what

I will ultimately become as time progresses. I also want the ability to take care of my parents and siblings in any way necessary, including nancially. I want my future wife and children to be proud of the man they know, despite my personal aws. Particularly concerning my children, I want them to know that their father loves them unconditionally and that no matter what, they can come to me with whatever concerns they have. I want my children to grow into people far more progressive, accepting and loving of the world and the people in it than I could ever be. My second goal concerns my career. I want to be an e ective and trustworthy civil servant/politician that my constituents and country can depend upon. I want whatever group of people Im privileged to represent to have the utmost con dence and faith in my commitment, skills and ability to execute.

Effective and trustworthy politician is there even such a thing? eyre out there, for sure. Its just unfortunate that in todays political climate, youre only getting to hear about the sel sh and ine ective politicians. Id like for the term politician to connote positivity again, if it ever did. And the third goal? e third goal concerns my own vanity: I want to make the cover of Time, GQ and Esquire. Study Breaks has been checked o the list. anks for that. Why should they choose you to be on the cover? Well, they have no reason to select me, as of now. But down the road Id hope that because Ive impacted a substantial amount of people in a positive way theyd be compelled to tell the world that story by placing me on the cover.

Justin Gaines T
ears are shed and hearts are broken every day. e Wilsons have lived through their nightmare for nearly four years and still have yet to obtain peace with their sons disappearance. My life has been turned inside out and upside down, says Erika Wilson, as tears ll the newly formed wrinkles that line her face. For four long years, Erika and Steven Wilson have lost countless hours of sleep and too many tears for one to count over their son Justin Gaines, the GSC Oconee student who has been missing since Nov. 2, 2007. Every day that he remains missing, the family grows deeper in their heartache and longs for answers. is situation was not something the family had ever expected, and after nearly four years of dealing with it, they still do not know how to handle it all. To a family their son means the world, and to have your world taken away is not something the Wilsons would want anyone to su er through. is tragedy has a ected the family more than many will ever imagine. Many GSC Oconee students will still recognize the story from when it rst happened. GSC student and close friend says, He was a guy everyone loved and he always brightened my day, while grinning from ear to ear thinking of all the good times they shared. MISSING e night he went missing, Gaines went home for the weekend to spend some time with his mom, stepfather and ve siblings still living at home. He was one of seven children and provided enormous amounts of love to his family, says Steven Wilson, Gaines stepfather. Like many other college fresh20 | NOVEMBER 2011 | STUDYBREAKS.COM

men who have recently embarked on a new world of independence, he was looking to have fun on a ursday night. Gaines and several friends headed to Wild Bills, a nightclub in Duluth, GA known for its irsty ursdays: 18 to party, 21 to drink. What was supposed to be a fun night turned out to be any thing but. Gaines friends ended up not going into Wild Bills, but he insisted on going in and nding a ride home, so his friends agreed and took o . Our baby just went home with the wrong people, says Kim Oliver, a close family friend. THE SEARCH Nov. 2 marked a changed day for Gaines family and loved ones. When Erika thinks back to Nov. 4, the day she was given the news, she says, When his friends called I knew that what I feared early in the day was really happening.

that will haunt her forever as her eyes ll up with tears thinking about when the searches for her son began. She says, During the searches we had when I physically went out on the search to look for my son in the woods, ditches, and the side of the road not knowing what I might nd was very psychological. After two times I knew it was something I could not do. is was how many of Gaines friends felt, but they knew that they couldnt give up. FOUR YEARS LATER Erika grows deeper in her sorrow every day that news stories are announced about his disappearance and every moment that this gets buried deeper in the cold case les for the Gwinnett County Police Department. Bob Poulnot, a private investigator for the case, has been working diligently to bring peace to the friends and family. O cials are still puzzled at how this has happened; small pieces of evidence have been released to the public over the past four years. Grainy surveillance videos surfaced in December 2007, but after that - absolutely nothing. It is still an active case but only worked on when police receive new information they feel has merit to be investigated. O cials say there is a lot of information, but nothing that leads to the answer of what happened to Gaines. e four-year anniversary of Gaines disappearance is this month; Nov. 2 is a day Erika cant bear to talk about. Sad to say I have tried not to think about it, she says. I have pushed that out of my mind for its not a happy anniversary. I know I will be in tears and thinking of him, as she catches two tears that stream down her face.

e weekend of Justins disappearance, before anyone gured out he was missing, Erika and Steven had begun to get a strange feeling about things. Erika began frantically searching on Facebook and MySpace for recent comments or to see what close friends were saying; no luck though. As many would, friends and family of Gaines began to make missing person yers to aid in the search for their beloved friend, son and brother. Justin is very lucky to have friends that care so very deeply about him yers were out before daybreak, Erika says. I am thankful for the friends that helped, for they kept me focused, for so much had to be done. Erika sits back and tries to remember the hurtful memories

Friends of Gaines released messages of hope written on balloons on the 1 year anniversary of his disappearance.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE

Students in Athens are constantly reminded of the dangers of the real world but hopefully they never have to live through it. Gaines family would never wish this upon anyone; that is why Study Breaks has provided these ve tips to staying safe when out with friends. Pay attention to who is around you and your friends, you never know when you will need to know what someone looks like. Always get your drinks from the bar, not from a stranger. Being drugged is more common that you think. Let someone who is not going out with you know where you are and who you are with If you havent heard from your close friends in 24 hours after going out the night before then do not hesitate to call the police; rather be safe than sorry. Dont except or give a ride to a stranger no matter how much money they offer you, they can grab a taxi and so can you.

Stephen Wilson, Gaines stepfather mourns over the tragedy his family is facing.

DESIGN STUDENT SHOWS HER SKILLS

Ruby Ko, an interior design student, has all the skills needed to make it as a design professional. Dont be intimated, Study Breaks readers. She opened up her home and let us pick her brain on all the design secrets she used. Ko lives in the Baxter Street Lofts, an upscale well-kept secret in the Athens community. Ko may be shy at times, but her sassy attitude shines in her designs. Describe your design.

RUBY KO

Ruby Ko, 22 Major: Interior Design Hometown: Duluth, GA

Bar Tray : $50

Pottery Barn

When decorating my loft, I didnt want to go with a theme so I guess if I put a theme on it then it would be e Ruby Ko eme, because I hate themes, to tell you the truth. With a theme, you will grow out of it in no time and everybody has already done that same thing before, so dont think youre being original with it. On to the designing, I wanted something quirky but with a touch of classy, contemporary and warm pieces. I did this by using a variety of patterns, wood and industrial designs in the furniture, pillows and wall art.
Favorite piece in the loft?

I found this little beaded moccasin at a thrift store and bought it. I picked out my stripped rug from that shoe. I am also a huge fan of the store Anthropologie; I would live in there if it was possible, so I use it as my muse for the loft.
The loft versus living at home with parents?

MY PLACE

My mirror! We call it the party mirror because everyone loves to dance and take pictures in front of it. It truly makes the place look a whole lot larger than it really is. Its a great way to make a small room look bigger.
Inspiration?

is by far tops home with parents. I love my mom and dad, but there is only so much you can do when your domain consist of only your room and bathroom. is move truly brought out my creative side and allowed me to spread out all of my ideas. e loft is the perfect size for me, but I am a tad bit intimidated to move into something larger, it will be hard to ll a more spacious home.
Can Study Breaks readers design this on a budget?

Mirror: $300

American Signature Furniture

Coffee Table : $799

Z Gallerie

I am so in love with everything Native American. e patterns are so unique in everything they design that I wanted to incorporate that into my designs.

Going cheap is great and all but there is always a need for some key pieces that can be used in several di erent designs. If youre going to buy something more expensive, then make sure that you can gure several di erent designs to go with it so you get your money out of it. Garage sales, thrifts stores, Goodwill and a can of spray paint will become your best friend.

I have been here for only three weeks but since I moved in I have had a blast! Everyone is really nice and they have provided me with a great environment for living. I love being able to pre-game then get a free ride downtown with the shuttle. Abbey West is proving why I chose to live here!

BEARDS
November is made for No Shaves. But its important to stay on the ruggedly groomed side of things, as opposed to shaggy, unkempt, possibly-a-grad-student-orhomeless-person-or-both. No one wants that side. No one.

WOODEN ACCESSORIES
We Wood Watch on Kembrel While youre doing the whole au natural thing with your face, might as well go whole hog and get some accessories that evoke the forests. We Wood watches are designed well, work perfectly, and, best of all, are endlessly fun to play with during a boring lecture.

BEER ACCOUTREMENTS
Glass Growler from West Elm Beer is always awesome. But it seems to be magically more awesome when its presented beautifully. Like in a vintage college beer stein. Or clad in the arms of a mysterious waitress. Or in artful glassware, like this growler. Something that classes up Natty Bo? That is a must-have.

BEAUTIFUL BOOKS
Atlas of Remote Islands on Amazon Before the universe invented Wikipedia, there were things called encyclopedias. They were big and had lots of information in them. And would you believe that they still make them! And other books, lled with fascinating facts! That you can read! And learn things! And impress people with your quaint studious lifestyle!

I go for casual clothes that look nice and are comfortable.

I like comfort and keeping it simple.

SMOKING JACKETS
Not that kind of smoking! Were talking old school cigar gent here, though tobacco isnt necessary to feel like a polished Gatsby as you loaf around your castleer, closet-sized dormroom.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR

ON CAMPUS

CUFFLINKS
The holidays are lled with annoying reasons to put on a scratchy and uncomfortable suit. At least you can stay connected with these cufinks. Every man needs a nice pair they turn the old penguin suit into something unique. And just think of the espionage possibilities.

No guido look, leave the hair gel and afiction at the Jersey Shore. Do not, we repeat, do not wear your school color with more of your school color. You can have school pride without being tacky. Unless you are Lil Wayne (and even then it is questionable) do not wear jeggings and/or girl jeans. Wake up ve minutes earlier and go to class in clothing items other than pajamas.

COLOGNE
Mens Tobacco and Whiskey Cologne from OrvisMen like women to smell lke cupcakes and icing; women like men to smell like, well, a man. Save the oral musky scents for cloudy mall stores - dab some Whiskey cologne on and get ready for some serious swoons in your direction.

UMBRELLA
Merde Il Pleut Umbrella on raindropsto.com Just because its grey, and raining, and sad, and dreary, doesnt mean you have to become lost in a sea of despairing and uncreative cheap black umbrellas. Pack something with an attitude and a sense of humor. (If you dont know what it says, ask a friend majoring in French)

ATHENS FOOD TOUR

ENTERTAINING HUNGRY ATHENIANS

thens has been known as the home to many local restaurants and supporters of locally grown food. e residents of Athens, also known as Athenians, have started to show their support for the Athens Food Tours. AFT is owned by Mary Howard, a University of Georgia alumna who does not like to take all the credit for the idea. Howard worked for a food tour company located in North Carolina before meeting her husband and moving back to Dawg country. e Tours rst kicked o on April 18, 2010, and have been growing ever since. Howard created the tours because she saw Athens had a great market for it, Everyone here in Athens is very supportive of the businesses here, and there is so much that Athens has to o er but most people just dont know that it is out there, said Howard. When someone signs up for a tour, she makes it her personal goal to provide them with an unforgettable experience. Howard smiled as she said, Its a really fun experience, thats the name of the game.
