Scholarly Times Week in Review:

10/22/11 10/28/11

Class of 2028 (Kindergarten)

This week, we learned the sounds for Yy and Zz, so be sure to ask your Scholar (if you haven't already!) to teach you the chants for yardstick and zipper. Next week we will learn the sounds for /ch/ and /sh/. We will begin our ABC book to wrap up our Qirst expedition where we learned all about jobs in our community. We will also Qinish up Unit 4 in math and take our fourth math test. Ask your Scholar if they are on a 1-2-3-4 in math and which level they are reading in literacy (A-B-C, etc).

Class of 2027 (First Grade)

First grade scholars have Qinally completed the Qinal drafts of their American symbols drawings and paragraphs. We are so proud of their persistence! This week in social studies, we have begun studying voting and elections. On November 8th, scholars will be visiting a polling place near the school. If you are planning to vote (we hope you are!) please talk to your scholar about your decision and point out candidates posters when you see them around the city.

Class of 2026 (Second Grade)

This week, the Class of 2028 continued our study of countries. Each expert group is learning about their countrys traditions, holidays, sports and games, landmarks, and much more. Through our countries, we are circling the globe! In math, we have begun using number discs to help scholars understand place value. A video will be posted tonight to help families learn how we use them and how to make them at home.

Art with Ms. Harris

This week in art, scholars have been busy at work learning about the element of color! Class of 2028 learned about the artist Jasper Johns who uses letters and numbers in his work. They used the Qirst letter of their name to create a painting. They mixed the primary colors (red, yellow and blue) to make the secondary colors (orange, green and purple) to paint the background. Class of 2027 has also been working with the color wheel and actually created their very own. Stop by the classroom to see them hung up around the room. Class of 2026 continues to study the artist Henri Matisse (see picture to the left). They are learning about facial proportion and creating Fauve inspired self-portraits with complimentary colors.

Advice from Our School Nurse: Asthma

Asthma is a condition that affects a persons airways (also called breathing tubes or bronchial tubes). These tubes bend from the windpipe (trachea) into the lungs. For children with asthma, breathing can be difQicult because their airways are sensitive. An asthma Qlare-up, which some people call an asthma attack, happens when a persons airways get swollen and narrowed. Sometimes, the swollen airways produce extra mucus. In between Qlare-ups, a childs breathing can seem totally normal. During a Qlare- up, it can seem like the person is breathing through a straw. A child with asthma may wheeze, cough, and feel tightness in the chest. An asthma Qlare-up can get worse if a child does not use asthma medication. After an asthma breathing Qlare-up, the airways almost always return to the way they were before within a few days. Next Up: Dealing with Asthma Triggers
