Capacity building of Bangladesh Seed Association Improved access to good quality seeds for consumer farmers October 2010 to March 2012 732,600 (actual cost: 613,428) Mar-13

Dr. Azizur Rahman, Serajul Islam, Delwara Khanom, Asifuddin Khan, Shavan Chokraborti, Iffat M Ashraful Abedin Khan Bangladesh Seed Grower,Dealer & Merchant Association Action For Enterprise

The Story (what we do and why)

Agriculture accounts for 32% (AVRDC report 2005) of Bangladeshs gross domestic product (GDP), and involves more than 52% (M Agriculture, 2009) of the countrys labor force. Quality seed is a critical input for farmers and more than 100 private sector compa in providing seed to farmers. In addition approximately 8000 (Comprehenechive Cross Sector Strategy-Katalyst -CSS) registered s operate across the country.

Recent trends indicate a shift towards the production of high yielding varieties (HYV) of vegetables, and as a result quality HYV se most essential input for vegetable farmers. Vegetable production is highly correlated with the quality of seeds, and ensuring acce seed could increase yield by as much as 10-15%(Comprehenechive Cross Sector Strategy-Katalyst -CSS) . However, the use of im still very limited in Bangladesh, and according to the Ministry of Agriculture only 18% (Prof.Dr.Golam A Fakir-Seed Fair, 2009) of th requirement for seeds for 2008-09 was supplied by the public and private sector. The remaining 82%(Prof.Dr.Golam A Fakir-Seed lower-quality seed retained by farmers. Therefore to increase the productivity of vegetable farmers, it is imperative to increase th quality seed through developing the vegetable seed sector in Bangladesh.

The development of Bangladesh seed sector is deterring by a number of constraints. Only a few high quality seed companies are operating, while the majorities are small businesses trading in seed of dubious quality including adulterated seed. Companies with seed often have lack of source of good quality hybride vegetable seed, inadequate knowledge of company breeders on quality see (OP & Hybrid) , lack of knowledge and skill of stock seed and F1seed production.

To address these constraints, Action for Enterprise (AFE) and Katalyst has decided to support private sector seed companies in the Identifying promoting best practices in technical areas including: breeding, production, and storage, Strengthening local production (including contract farming) systems, Identification of new sources of quality seed;

Through supporting these initiatives and addressing key technical constraints, AFE and Katalyst will increase farmers access to qu seeds, thereby increasing their yields and ultimately their income.
