CHALLENGES TO DEVELOPMENT OF 20122013 CALENDAR n Staff Development Days n Teacher Preparation Days n Parent Conference Days n Early Release Days n Lack of Info re: Testing Days n UIL Rules n Budget Impact of Additional Teaching Days n Inclement Weather Days n Optional Flexible Year Plan Requirements ISSUES IMPACTING TIMELINE TO HAVE CALENDAR APPROVED n Presentation to the Board of Trustees n Review of Recommended Options by Calendar Committee (second meeting) n Online Staff and Community Survey n Possible Revisions to Reflect Staff/Community Input n Board Adoption of Calendar and Flexible Year Instruction Plan n Submission of Optional Flexible Year Plan to TEA OPTIONAL FLEXIBLE YEAR PLAN n School Leadership is reviewing the benefits and impact of the Optional Flexible Year Plan for secondary schools for 20122013. n The plan under consideration would reduce by ten the number of school days for middle and high school students who have met certain requirements related to achievement, attendance, and discipline. n The plan is being considered as an incentive to encourage students to strive for better grades, school attendance and improved behavior. n The plan would also allow for ten days of concentrated instruction for struggling students who need additional help. n More than 100 Texas school districts have adopted the plan at some point and some have credited it with helping to improve student achievement. n Mesquite ISD, currently a Recognized district, has reportedly had good results with the plan in previous years.
