Dear Reader, Prompted not least by the Ecodesign Directive (EuP) and its regulations, energy efficiency and sustainability have become the predominant topics in building services engineering. This has speeded up the development of even better products. Although quantum leaps have only been made in the context of LEDs and their technical lighting properties, such as a luminous efficacy of 150 lm/W under laboratory conditions at OSRAM, there is also still considerable potential slumbering in the established technologies. As a result, room for improvement remains in terms of the energy efficiency and economy of lighting systems, including simple installation, straightforward modification or extension and long maintenance intervals. All further developments and improvements by OSRAM focus on high benefit for the user. Examples from the conventional sector include the XT versions of our compact fluorescent lamps OSRAM DULUX L, which have a lamp life of up to 36,000 hours, or the product families HCI-TT and ET replacing the mercury vapour lamps. However, electronic control gear units such as the POWERTRONIC PTo 3 DIM with multiple control functions also have considerable potential. Higher luminous efficacy is not the only topic of interest in the LED sector. The LINEARlight Flex Protect range in Safety Class IP67 for illuminated advertising uses a new encapsulation material promising greater transparency throughout the entire life cycle. OSRAM now offers the easy to install LEDVANCE XL downlights to replace almost all recessed luminaires with two 26 W compact fluorescent lamps. The range of light management products for indoor use is also changing, for instance with the HIGH BAY motion sensor for use up to a height of 13 m. When combined with daylight-dependent control, energy efficiency can be boosted by up to 45%. It is system solutions which yield the greatest benefit for users a domain in which OSRAM is seen as a competent partner offering a vast range of products from its Professional Lighting Business Unit. In this way, all projectspecific tasks and requirements can be professionally solved true to our philosophy of Choice for the customer. This new issue of light sphere is also packed with interesting information highlighting the system concept. Yours,

Claus Regitz Manager Professional Lighting Business Unit

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest, OSRAM and A&O Lighting presented the city of Munich with a superlative light show. High-power LEDs and light projectors bathed the Ruhmeshalle and Bavaria monument in atmospheric light, painting the night sky with a variety of light motifs.

Oktoberfest celebrates 200 years

OSRAM congratulates the festival with a unique light show
A dazzling celebration Between 18th September and 4th October 2010, roughly 6.4 million people from around the world came to the Theresienwiese in Munich. This year's Wiesn, as it is fondly known, was a very special occasion marking the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest. OSRAM and A&O Lighting Technology GmbH presented the city of Munich with a superlative light show instead of a cake bearing 200 candles, as OSRAM's CEO Martin Goetzeler remarked. Every evening between 1st and 4th October, hundreds of thousands of Oktoberfest guests marvelled over a show more astounding than anything seen before: modern lighting and projection technology bathed the Bavaria monument and the night sky with a variety of light motifs. The Ruhmeshalle pantheon lit up with atmospheric lighting effects. The base of the monument was also illuminated with three Oktoberfest logos and congratulations. Link to the future More than 8,000 high-power LEDs were used to create this magnificent architectural illumination of the Ruhmeshalle and Bavaria monument. This is tomorrow's technology, for OSRAM already generates more than 20% of its total sales with this technology and less than 5% with classical incandescent lamps. And so, the show's LED light bridged the gap between the long tradition of the Oktoberfest and its future which will hopefully last for another 200 years. Falcon light projectors often found at sports events and large (open air) concerts were also used. The projectors were equipped with XBO 7,000 W and XStage 3,000 W short arc xenon lamps from OSRAM which feature an exceedingly high luminous flux and good colour rendering properties. A&O Lighting, one of the industry's most successful firms located in Oyten near Bremen, was responsible for production and technical execution of the light show. There was a socially responsible element to this project, too: OSRAM ensured that, throughout the light display, the spectacle illuminating Munich's night sky had no impact on the climate. The total energy consumption, including that for transport to and from the location as well as installation and dismantling, was converted into the savings which can be made by using energy-saving lamps. The figure was generously rounded up to the equivalent of the savings made with 200 energy-saving lamps and OSRAM donated a corresponding quantity of such lamps to the charity Mnchner Tafel. A new dimension in management

New applications with DALI PROFESSIONAL light control system
Flexibility is another bonus Flexibility is another factor underlying the rapid spread of DALI technology. When a room's use changes and its layout is adapted accordingly, the various light groups need only be reprogrammed without having to modify the wiring. Since light groups can be flexibly addressed by such DALI light control systems, installation is greatly simplified in relation to one based on 1 .... 10 V technology. Besides which, standard mains-compatible installation lines can be used as a control line. For higher demands Sensor systems and operating elements must increasingly be connected to two-wire DALI control lines in order to be able to upgrade existing lighting solutions in a way that is a less labour intensive task than when laying additional wiring. This simplifies the planning of such extensions, too. To meet these requirements, OSRAM has developed the new DALI PROFESSIONAL light control system with sensors and operating elements, such as push-buttons or touch panels, which can be connected to the DALI control line in addition to the DALI luminaires. Up to 64 freely addressable DALI control units can be connected to each of the four DALI outputs. Further sensors or operating elements can also be connected without having to reduce the number of DALI control units. The potential in the four DALI lines of the DALI PROFESSIONAL controller, each of which has a control line up to 300 m long, is unrivalled, with a total of 256 individually addressable ECG units which can be broken down into

Fig. 1 The new DALI PROFESSIONAL light control system proves its potential for lighting solutions in office or conference rooms, as well as in the industrial sector.

By popular request OSRAM has responded to users' increasing demands by extending the functionality of the new DALI PROFESSIONAL light control system. After all, DALI light control systems are now proving their value everywhere, be it in office and conference rooms, the hotel and restaurant trade or in industrial environments, such as high-bay warehouses. What's more, the tasks required of dimmable lighting solutions can focus on energyefficient operation, as well as on the reproduction of defined lighting scenes.

DALI control units can be used not only for all conventional lamps available on the market, but also for LEDs, thus creating the basis for made-tomeasure lighting solutions. The requirements imposed on light control systems have increased successively with the establishment of the DALI interface standard. In addition to basic functions, such as daylightdependent control with occupancy detection in offices or industry, there is also a growing demand for usebased light scenes in meeting and conference rooms (Fig. 1). These two capabilities can also be combined, for example in multi-purpose buildings, to accommodate different events and different types of use.

as many as 64 light groups, as well as up to 16 sensors via coupling modules and 32 push-button couplers, each for four standard push-buttons or switches (Fig. 2). As of early 2011, it will even be possible to connect maintenance-free radio switches using EnOcean technology directly to the DALI line via a special receiver. Diversity is the key The DALI PROFESSIONAL light control system opens up further areas of use for DALI. The sensor systems can be installed either in the luminaire or as a standalone unit in a suspended ceiling (Fig. 3). And the same diversity

also extends to the operating elements: from simple push-buttons or maintenance-free EnOcean radio switches and the design-oriented Glass Touch user interface to a configurable Touch Panel (Fig. 4).

The controller which lies at the heart of the system features plug-and-play functionality, meaning that simple applications can be achieved without reconfiguring the DALI system. In this way, all DALI luminaires which are already connected to a DALI output can be switched via an occupancy detector connected to the same DALI line, or they can be manually switched or dimmed via push-buttons. Correct functioning of both the installation and the connected DALI luminaires can be checked by means of two buttons on the controller; an LED indicator makes diagnosis easy. The structured configuration software ensures that functionality and light groups can be individually adapted in line with project requirements via clearly structured work steps. The DALI PROFESSIONAL light control system offers an array of capabilities benefiting luminaire manufacturers, as well as ambitious electrical fitters or planners and light planners. DALI PROFESSIONAL ensures considerable value-added, whether it serves a basis for dynamic lighting solutions geared to energy efficiency, for atmospheric light scenes or whether it caters to both these aspects at once. Colossal: Terminal T3 at Delhi Airport

HO CONSTANT T5 lamps demonstrate their excellence in lighting technology
New awareness Terminal T3 at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport is the most ambitious infrastructure project undertaken to date in India and symbolic of the country's booming economy. The glass and steel construction was officially inaugurated by India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the beginning of July 2010 well before the XIXth Commonwealth Games started on 3rd October 2010. The terminal is designed to handle roughly 34 million passengers per year. The new terminal building will be one of the largest in the world: with an area of 500,000 m it ranks 6th behind such terminals as Peking with 900,000 m, Madrid with 757,000 m or Bangkok with 563,000 m. A total of 48 directly adjacent and nine remote aircraft parking bays, 78 passenger boarding bridges and 168 check-in desks will ensure that passengers are handled in less than 45 minutes. The new terminal T3 was built in a record-breaking time of 37 months by 40,000 workers at a cost of roughly 2 billion euros.
6

Long-term The airport's development, management and operation are in the hands of Delhi International Airport pte. Ltd. (DIAL), a joint venture between the GMR Group with a 54% holding, Fraport and Eraman Malaysia, as well as the state-owned Airports of India with a blocking minority of 26%. The licence runs for 30 years with optional renewal for another 30 years. On account of its extensive experience, Fraport AG is responsible for the airport's troublefree operation, while Eraman Malaysia acts as retail consultant.

OSRAM India was awarded the contract for delivery of lamps and control gear by the Debbas Group with headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon, which had been commissioned by GMR to handle the entire architectural lighting. For OSRAM, this is the largest project worldwide involving HO CONSTANT T5 fluorescent lamps. In addition to the lighting for the terminal building itself, however, the overall contract also encompassed illumination of the runway which can even accommodate the Airbus A380 with 45 W and 200 W halogen lamps, as well as equipping the offices with 70,000 T5 fluorescent lamps. Exceedingly bright and efficient The building with its colourful facade facing the runway and decorated with huge Buddha hands above the check-in desks was designed by the British architects Mott MacDonald (Fig. 1). A glass roof mounted on white pillars ensures that the building is flooded with sufficient daylight while at the same time reflecting the sun's heat. In this way, the energy required for lighting and air-conditioning has been reduced. INTELLIGENT electronic control gear units and 16,000 QUICKTRONIC PROFESSIONAL units ensure a bright, friendly interior atmosphere. They are supplemented by more than 9,000 compact fluorescent lamps and metal-halide lamps. Excellent efficiency is assured above all by the system of HO CONSTANT T5 lamps and QUICKTRONIC INTELLIGENT (Fig. 2). This ensures a luminous flux of 90% in the temperature range between 0 C and +70 C, while luminaire efficiency is improved by more than 10% by the T5 CONSTANT technology (Fig. 3).

The multi-stage System + Guarantee from OSRAM covering the combination of HO CONSTANT T5 lamps and QUICKTRONIC INTELLIGENT naturally also generates value-added. The very first ECG to fail is replaced, without waiting for the specified ECG failure rate to be exceeded. In other words, OSRAM consistently stands for high quality. For DIAL, however, ecological compatibility is important not only when it comes to lighting, but also with regard to the landscaping around

Lighting control enters the training curriculum

Future-oriented training for electrical fitters
Tailored to specific tasks Lighting control systems are becoming steadily more important for two main reasons. For one thing, both rising energy prices and statutory regulations to improve the energy efficiency of buildings are having an impact on the design of lighting solutions. Potential energy savings can be tapped here with the aid of lighting control units with occupancy detectors and daylight-dependent control. The DALI interface standard paves the way for concepts which are both simple and functional, and in which light groups can be flexibly configured on the basis of individually addressable DALI control units. The other reason is that LED technology is becoming increasingly important as a basis for RGB colour mixing or for applications using white light with variable colour temperature. Lighting control is essential here. At the same time, there is a growing awareness of the fact that lighting control must be included in the training curriculum (Fig. 1). This applies primarily to electronic engineers specialising in energy and buildings (EFEG), electronic engineers for building services (EBT), electronic engineers for buildings and infrastructure systems (EGI) and event technicians. This has prompted OSRAM and ELABO TrainingsSysteme GmbH, a leader in the didactic training systems market for basic and advanced industrial and technical training, to discuss ways of translating the subject of lighting control into suitable training material and to consider which lighting components would offer the best support to this end. Based in Kindingen, the company offers a large range of practical training solutions for electrical engineers in the fields of automation / control technology, as well as installation and building services management. Rainer Wrenger from the department of Marketing Development Light Management Systems at OSRAM discussed the subject of lighting control with the head of development at ELABO TS, Johann Hausner.

OSRAM: Mr. Hausner, the profession of electrical fitter is changing. How are you adjusting to this development? ELABO TS: We are keeping an eye on the industrial market environment so that those trends which become established in the long term can be spotted early on. These subjects are then incorporated into our training concepts and hardware systems developed to implement these future technologies in the reality of everyday training. The didactic complement is provided by practically oriented manuals ensuring the competent transfer of knowledge. OSRAM: Which points do you focus on when designing training systems? ELABO TS: One point of importance is for the training system to clearly and comprehensively reflect the structure of the technology. All characteristic features are presented to the trainees in the best possible quality and with a clear practical relevance. Everyday competence is reinforced
8

by the didactic structure of the training system. We achieve this through the appropriate choice and optimum arrangement of real industrial components. OSRAM: How important do you consider lighting control to be for electrical fitters? ELABO TS: Lighting control will become more important for two reasons, namely energy efficiency and convenience. Both are decisive criteria for the user. For the electrical fitter, attention focuses on simple and correct installation. It should also be possible to configure the functionality individually in each case. OSRAM: How do you view the DALI standard in this context? ELABO TS: Electrical fitters' knowledge of DALI differs considerably, especially as regards the simpler installation and improved capabilities in comparison to 110 V technology this makes it all the more important to convey this information during the

Fig. 2 The DALI MCU rotary dimmer is an easily installed component for simple dimming solutions with DALI ECG.

training stage and to prepare young professionals for these technologies (Fig. 2). The Touch DIM interface of DALI electronic control gear provides an easy introduction. In a next phase, the individual control units can be operated via DALI without conversion. OSRAM: How important are LED solutions and which know-how is needed? ELABO TS: Trainees must be introduced to the possibilities offered

by LED technology. Many firms are lacking in this respect. We consider it important for training systems to draw attention to the fundamentals and the basic principles underlying control systems, as well as to their potential, and to provide tips for installation. OSRAM: How much do experienced electrical fitters know about LED technology? ELABO TS: LED technology is associated with saving energy, better

luminous efficacy or higher efficiency. Their knowledge of the variety of applications, LED control, operating conditions and installation varies considerably. This makes it all the more important to include the principles of LED technology during the training phase and to highlight the differences between this technology and conventional lighting control systems. OSRAM: In this context, how do you see the principles of and the possibilities offered by the EASY Color Control light control system an option which can be used, among other things, for LED applications? ELABO TS: As it is a modular system with easily installed components, it will be of interest to all electrical fitters (Fig. 3). EASY Color Control can be used for projects large or small. As a result, the various modules can be used in the training system either individually or in combination. OSRAM: Mr. Hausner, thank you for this interesting conversation. We wish you all the best with your training concept for lighting control systems.

Touch DIM broadens

DALI repeater: extension component for universal use
More and more popular Lighting installations with DALI light control are versatile systems ranging from applications with simple manual dimming of a small number of luminaires to networked solutions with numerous luminaires linked to the building management system via gateways. This makes DALI equally suitable for both individual offices and large open-plan offices in which a flexible layout is part of the everyday life (Fig. 1). Dimmable luminaires with DALI control units for all standard lamps are now commonplace. To date, most of the simple dimming solutions are based on the Touch DIM principle, the mains voltage at the DALI input being adjusted as required via a standard push-button. However, this convenient system is coming up against its technical limitations: six DALI control units with a total cable length of 25 m represent the maximum possible. Due to the underlying principle, synchronisation may be lost between the individual control units if they are more numerous or in the event of poor mains quality with harmonics. One possible consequence is that individual luminaires cannot be dimmed or switched in the group. Intelligent solution OSRAM recommends the use of its DALI repeater for small or larger Touch DIM applications. With the DALI repeater, up to 64 DALI units can be dimmed in one group with a single push-button input even with a cable length of up to 300 m (Fig. 2). If this proves insufficient, several repeaters can be cascaded to form a larger system of any desired size and the connected DALI luminaires dimmed as a group (Fig. 3). Synchronisation no longer poses a problem, as only one DALI signal is sent to the ECG units on the output side. New freedom Alternatively, the DALI repeater can also be combined with a radio receiver using EnOcean technology. Featuring battery and maintenance-free technology, EnOcean radio switches are extremely flexible, as they can be simply affixed to glass surfaces or partitions.

Fig. 1 The range of DALI-based lighting installations extends from simple manual dimming to networked solutions with manifold requirements.

its horizons
100m 300m Up to 64 ECG

Fig. 2 DALI repeater for larger Touch DIM installations with up to 64 DALI control units for dimming with standard buttons.

In lighting solutions with DALI control units, such as DALI PROFESSIONAL from OSRAM, or DALI gateways for linking to the building management system, the DALI repeater also makes it possible to increase the number of controllable DALI control units. In such a system, the DALI repeater acts as a connected DALI ECG, the control units on the repeater's output side operating as a single light group. Versions for all requirements The DALI repeater is available both as a flat 21 mm housing for installation in the luminaire and as a rail version with integrated relay contact for installation as a standalone unit (Fig. 4). This contact can be used to disconnect the supply voltage and thus eliminate stand-by losses inside the unit when the lamps are off. The inrush current of the connected DALI control units must naturally be taken into account here the maximum number of devices per switch contact is specified for the various types in the repeater data sheet. These two versions of the DALI repeater from OSRAM offer much more scope when expanding DALIbased lighting solutions. This yields major advantages for planning and installation which will benefit not just luminaire manufacturers, but planners and electrical fitters, too. Rainer Wrenger, OSRAM Munich

Discover the Grand!

LED technology from OSRAM enhances energy efficiency in the 5-Star hotel
Homely atmosphere Idyllically set in park grounds and just a stone's throw from Hamburg's city centre and the Alster lake, the privately run Grand Elyse hotel attracts guests with its family atmosphere. Every last detail in the hotel bears the stamp of its founder Eugen Block. High-quality materials, warm colours and exquisite design make for unique 5-Star luxury. It is therefore no surprise to find that the Grand Elyse won the Conga Award 2009 as Germany's best conference hotel. A total of 511 spacious rooms and elegant suites ensure that the hotel's guests feel thoroughly at ease. The hotel's vibrant centrepiece is the Boulevard, the place to meet, with boutiques and six restaurants with first-class international cuisine. The Grand Elyse is also a sought-after venue: 25 rooms of all sizes equipped with the latest technology accommodate
12

conferences, seminars and festive events for anything from two to 1,200 people and always with a perfect setting. Ready for the future The hotel celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2010 reason enough for a thorough renovation. In the large Hall of Mirrors, for example, the Hamburg firm gpotec Gesellschaft fr Licht- und Elektrotechnik mbH has converted the six crystal chandeliers to innovative LED technology from OSRAM (Fig. 1). Now, LINEARlight Colormix Flex LED modules have replaced the 360 40 W incandescent lamps which will be banned throughout Europe from 2012 onwards. Controlled by OPTOTRONIC OT75 and OT DMX RGB DIM control units, the Hall of Mirrors will in future shine not only in white, but also in every conceivable shade thanks to RGB colour mixing

always precisely tailored to the occasion and the specific requirements, such as the Corporate Design of a corporate event. And the result is illuminating in every respect. Fitting the chandeliers with LEDs reduces energy consumption by 36,000 kWh per year the investment consequently pays off in just nine months. This innovative solution in the Hall of Mirrors is rounded off by 20 LEDVANCE Downlight L luminaires from OSRAM. The energy-efficient luminaire with OSLON LED is unobtrusively designed with an opaque diffuser. Due to its outstanding system efficiency and excellent technical properties, the LEDVANCE Downlight L replaces conventional versions with compact 26 W compact fluorescent lamp or 75 W low-voltage halogen lamp. The oval reigns supreme LINEARlight DRAGON Colormix LED modules similarly create a fitting mood when used as the backlit "eye" in the middle of the ceiling in the Oval Office (Fig. 2). Their potential for saving energy is also impressively demonstrated in the multi-functional sixth-floor Board Room with its panoramic view across the roofs of Hamburg. Controlled by OPTOTRONIC control units and OT DMX RGB DIM dimmers, the modules create stunning coloured light scenes with exceedingly homogeneous illumination. What's more, energy efficiency has been boosted by 42% in comparison to the previous lighting solution. A glowing reception The transforming effect of LED light is not only shown inside: the newly built canopy roof outside the Large Foyer the reception area leading to the festive hall also catches the eye with a spectacular presentation of coloured light for events. The glass ceiling backlit by DRAGONchain Colormix LED modules appears exceedingly homogeneous (Fig. 3). Now, the players of the football club Hamburger SV can be fittingly welcomed as regular guests in their traditional blue colour. The advantages of LED lighting from OSRAM, especially its energy efficiency and the long service life with reduced maintenance, were so obvious that the innovative semiconductor lighting has now been installed in many areas, including the en-suite bathrooms, the cove lighting near the elevators and the display cases. The Grand Elyse has become a reference project demonstrating the variety of possible LED applications. Dorothee Fischer, OSRAM Munich

reduced without diminishing their brightness. The most common areas of use are covered by wattages of 16 W, 22 W, 26 W and 28 W with a luminous flux ranging from 1,600 lm to 2,800 lm. The OSRAM DULUX L HE family with a mean lamp life of 20,000 hours includes versions with a colour temperature of 3,000 K and 4,000 K. Combining these lamps with standard QUICKTRONIC PROFESSIONAL QTP5 or QUICKTRONIC INTELLIGENT QTi electronic control gear or dimmable QTi (DALI) ... DIM ECG units results in exceedingly energy-efficient systems which can be dimmed to 3% of luminous flux. The better alternative With these properties, the OSRAM DULUX L HE compact fluorescent lamps are ideal, for example, for use in standard luminaires which offer both outstanding energy efficiency and excellent light quality. Lamping with 4 x OSRAM DULUX L HE 28 W or 4 x OSRAM DULUX L HE 26 W as an energy-efficient alternative to the standard OSRAM DULUX L 4 x 55 W compact lamps reduces the connected load by roughly 50% (Table 1). Besides which, luminaire efficiency can be boosted from 80% to over 90%. Incorrect lamping is prevented by the slightly modified 2GX11 base and socket system (Fig. 2). Having recognised the advantages of these energy-efficient OSRAM DULUX L HE compact fluorescent lamps, a number of luminaire manufacturers have responded by designing their luminaires to operate with them, prime examples being the standard luminaires ECO from Neuco and CAPA from Zumtobel (Fig. 3). The latter stands out through its luminaire

Efficiency with distinction Energy efficiency is the predominant topic in all project considerations, building analyses and lighting concepts. The new OSRAM DULUX L HE lamp family consequently attracted considerable interest very soon after being introduced on the market (Fig. 1). With a luminous efficacy of up to 100 lm/W at an operating temperature of 35 C, these lamps offer considerable value-added for lighting solutions in offices, hotels and public facilities, for their connected load can be significantly

efficiency of over 95% combined with a high proportion of direct light and consistent reduction of luminance, resulting in a luminous flux of almost 85 lm/W for the luminaire. Advantageous on the ceiling OSRAM DULUX L HE compact fluorescent lamps also demonstrate their advantages when fitted in square flush-mounted ceiling luminaires. Their good performance is highlighted by a comparison of systems with T8 and T5 lamps in louver luminaires (Table 2). The luminaires' higher luminous flux and energy efficiency yields a variety of benefits. Maintenance costs are also reduced, as only two lamps are needed instead of four. With their energy efficiency and lamp life, OSRAM DULUX L HE compact fluorescent lamps are good news in large-size design luminaires, too (Fig. 4), such as those in long-duty use in hotels and public facilities.

Small in size, bright in

POWERBALL HCI-TX/P from OSRAM displays potential
Successful miniaturisation The potential inherent in metal-halide lamps is revealed wherever brilliant light with very good colour rendering is called for. Over the years, these lamps have become ever smaller and more powerful with the development of new burner technologies. Another step towards further miniaturisation was taken when the POWERBALL HCI-TX/P was presented at Light+Building 2010. The POWERBALL HCI-TX/P metalhalide lamp from OSRAM the smallest shatterproof HID lamp for use in open luminaires - has a round ceramic burner and a new base-and-socket system, the GU8.5 Twist & Lock (Fig. 1). With a maximum length of 98 mm including the contact pins and a diameter of just 22 mm, the HCI-TX/P is unrivalled.
18

Despite its compact size and additional protective bulb, the lamp delivers a very high luminous flux of 3,300 lm at 35 W and 7,300 lm at 70 W. As a result, this miniaturised lamp achieves a luminous efficacy of up to 100 lm/W. The metal-halide lamp is designed for use with electronic control gear and operates most efficiently with

the matching POWERTRONIC unit from OSRAM. Its average lamp life of 12,000 hours makes for longer intervals between lamp changes and reduces maintenance work, which ultimately also cuts operating costs.

Fig. 1 The shatterproof POWERBALL HCI-TX/P metal-halide lamp for use in open luminaires is not only unrivalled as regards its degree of miniaturisation, but also when it comes to lamp changes.

light!
Greater freedom through easy handling Since the POWERBALL HCI-TX/P lamp is approved for open luminaires, a cover glass is not required. This results in simpler and more costeffective luminaire designs as compared to other technologies, ultimately permitting more attractively priced lighting systems. The GU8.5-Twist & Lock system whose standardisation is currently proceeding at the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) is set to make life even easier. The principle underlying the system has already been used in the GU6.5 base of the POWERBALL HCI-TF metalhalide lamp for closed luminaires and not only makes it easier for everyday users to replace lamps, but also to clean the luminaire. And that saves both time and money. The GU8.5 base is robust and the socket ensures that the lamp is locked securely. As a result, the lamp is firmly secured and the pins reliably make contact. In other words, the lamp is precisely positioned in the reflector to ensure optimum light distribution. Quick and easy lamp changes open up new possibilities in terms of handling. For the light colour can be adapted in line with the time of year or fashion trends, practically in a few swift moves. The metal-halide lamps are available in two light colours: warm white with 3,000 K and neutral white with 4,200 K and an excellent colour rendering index of 93 and 96, respectively. Brilliant presentation of the user's goods is assured.

Brilliance is called for POWERBALL HCI-TX/P metal-halide lamps create brilliant highlights, above all in decorative open downlights and spots. They can be used for a whole variety of purposes: in boutiques and department stores, as well as in office buildings, showrooms or exhibition stands. Being shatterproof means increased safety, the POWERBALL HCI-TX/P can also be used for highquality lighting in hotels and restaurants where open luminaires are not uncommon. The reinforced UV filter protects colours and materials more effectively than a conventional luminaire with simple cover glass. From 27th August to 26th September 2010, the POWERBALL HCI-TX/P metal-halide lamp showed its brilliant qualities at the exhibition Audi Urban Future Award 2010 in Venice (Fig. 2), at which the award was also presented. The aim of the Award is provide a look to the future and encourage debate over the interaction between mobility, architecture and urban development. In the lighting concept developed by the Berlin engineering office Kardorff Ingenieure Lichtplanung, the open luminaires built by Interferenz Lichtsysteme GmbH in Tnisvorst were seemlessly integrated into the walls of the pavilion. Reflected by mirrors, the POWERBALL HCI-TX/P lamp presented the exhibits of the six internationally renowned architectural offices in brilliant light with very good colour rendering at one of its first public appearances (Fig. 3). The stray light was used to illuminate the ceiling. Chris Kazazis, OSRAM Munich

News in brief

Versatility is the hallmark of the QUICKTRONIC PROFESSIONAL QTP5

From the very beginning, the family of QUICKTRONIC PROFESSIONAL QTP5 electronic control gear units was the first choice for many users, as demonstrated by the usage in a large number of projects with very different fields of application. The second QTP5 generation introduced just over a year ago has followed in the same footsteps. This successful family is now supplemented by QTP5 3x14 and 4x14 for three and four-lamp operation of LUMILUX HE 14 W T5 fluorescent lamps. The properties of these ECG have been considerably improved to create even greater freedom. The most important feature of the QTP5 is its service life of 100,000 hours with a maximum failure rate of 10% at tc = 65 C. The shorter housing means that seriesconnected emergency lighting modules can also be accommodated. More rapid switching from AC power to DC power also makes them significantly more suitable for emergency lighting systems. Almost all applications can be covered in combination with LUMILUX CONSTANT, XT, ES or Natura T5 lamps. The possibilities range from car parks, warehouses or cold stores where very high or very low temperatures are encountered and extremely long maintenance intervals are required, through to cost-effective and energy-efficient lighting of large areas, such as supermarkets and open-plan offices. With the possibility of combining suitable sensor systems and industrial use with luminaires of Safety Class II. Until recently, the latter applications in particular, i.e. those without any earthing whatsoever, were the domain of conventional control gear or specialpurpose products and therefore very expensive ECG units. Thanks to the considerably better EMC properties, the standard QTP5 ECG units are now also ideal for use in single and two-lamp luminaires of Safety Class II. The QUICKTRONIC PROFESSIONAL QTP5 certainly deserves to win a prize for its versatility. These electronic control gear units are not only an ideal partner for T5 lamps, but also for the new energy-efficient OSRAM DULUX L HE compact fluorescent lamps - see page 14 of this edition of light sphere.
