The heart-thumpingly beautiful Villa Geggiano just outside of Siena has been in the Bandinelli family since 1527. The current proprietors, brothers Andrea and Alessandro Bandinelli, oversee what must be one of the world's loveliest wine properties, and they do it with the gentle touch that must be accorded a masterpiece such as this. Much of the structure that serves as their home is 300 years old, and the tapestries and furnishings magically transport one back in time. And then there are the wines: honest, authentic, and perfect examples of why Kermit insists on spending time in Italy. Balanced bright fruit, a deep leathery core, and tantalizing acidity are typified here as signature of the region. In 2008, higher elevation vineyards (350-400 metres in altitude) like this experienced cooler temperatures, producing crisp bright wines. The vineyards are southwest and east-southeast exposed, sitting on clay, limestone, and silt soil with Galestro rocks. The vines are spurred cordon trained. The temperaturecontrolled fermentation took place in stainless steel and lasted about 15 days. The wine was aged for about 18 months in 500L French oak barrels (10% new).

When was the last time a white at this price seduced you? Domaine du Salvard 2010 Pinot Noir Unique 750 ml Plenty of charm and emminently drinkable. The colour is pale ruby, the nose is hauntingly evocative of a light-bodied Santenay, with a trace of grape jam and earth. Domaine du Salvard 2010 Sauvignon Blanc Unique 750 ml Ebulliently fresh, almost upliftingly youthful. 100% SB grown just outside the Cheverny AOC. The flavours are soft and piquant, and the low alcohol makes it easy -- almost necessary -- to enjoy an extra glass. Yet, it has the gorgeous fruity minerality that is round and fat, highlighting the beautiful approach of the younger vines (ha! 25 years old!) that it comes from. Cornas * Domaine Clape 2010 Ctes du Rhne Rouge 750 ml 100% Syrah from a combination of vines that are young vine Cornas and a small parcel outside of the Cornas appellation at the bottom of the hill.
