PGP Whole Disk Encryption Users Guide

How does PGP Whole Disk Encryption change how you use your computer? PGP Whole Disk Encryption requires you to authenticate with your PGP Whole Disk Encryption passphrase when you turn on your computer, before Windows even starts. Once you have authenticated, on-the-fly decryption and encryption is enabled and your computer will continue with the normal startup process, which will look and behave exactly as before. What is different after PGP Whole Disk Encryption is installed?
After installing PGP WDE, BootGuard will launch before the hard drive will be able to boot into Windows.

1. After you have installed PGP WDE before the PC boots, you will see a similar screen appear. Your passphrase should be the same as your current domain password.

When typing your passphrase at the BootGuard screen, you can press the TAB button to view what you are typing, this can help you verify whether or not you have Num Lock or Caps Lock enabled. When you are booting the PC from either a complete shutdown, reboot or hibernate, you will see the BootGuard screen shown above. In this mode, the fingerprint scanner cannot be used in place of typing the screen.

Do I have to remember a new passphrase in addition to my Windows login password? No. The PGP Whole Disk Encryption login process replaces the need for you to log into Windows when you turn on your computer, and your Windows and PGP Whole Disk Encryption passphrases are the same. In the event you need to change your Windows password, or vice versa, PGP Whole Disk Encryption automatically synchronizes the passphrases in the background. What happens if I forget my PGP Whole Disk Encryption passphrase? If you forget your passphrase, you will need to contact the Service Desk at 1-877-817-4357. The Service Desk Agent can issue a one-time-use recovery passphrase to you over the phone, which you can type in to regain access to your system. You should then immediately reset your passphrase according to FAIs password security policy requirements. Does PGP Whole Disk Encryption affect how I use any of my applications? Will it affect my email? No. While you are logged into your system, all applications, including email and other network software, run unaffected. The encryption/decryption is entirely transparent to application activity. Can I still put my PGP Whole Disk Encryptionprotected system into hibernation or standby modes? Yes, PGP Whole Disk Encryption supports Windows hibernation and standby modes. When you bring your system out of hibernation, PGP Whole Disk Encryption will require you to authenticate before you can access Windows. What are the other applications here? PGP Whole Disk Encryption includes some components that are installed but are not necessary to be utilized. The full encryption of the hard drive is all that is needed. These other tools are not recommended to be used. PGP Virtual Disk Volumes Uses part of your hard drive space as an encrypted virtual disk volume with its own drive letter. You can create additional users for a volume so that people you authorize can also access the volume. When the volume is mounted, you can change files stored in it, take files out of it, and move files into it. When the volume is unmounted, all the data on the volume is protected. PGP Zip Adds any combination of files and folders to an encrypted, compressed, portable archive. PGP WDE must be installed on a system to create or open a PGP Zip archive. PGP Self-Decrypting Archives (SDAs) Puts files and folders into an encrypted, compressed package that can be opened on a Windows system that does not have PGP WDE installed. It can be used to securely exchange files with someone who does not have PGP software installed PGP Shredder Completely destroys files and folders so that even file recovery software cannot recover them. Deleting a file using the Windows Recycle Bin does not actually delete it; it sits on your drive and eventually gets overwritten. This feature also completely wipes free space on your drives so your deleted data is truly unrecoverable.
