PET DAY 2011

Pet Day is one of the highlights of the school year for the children and the community. The whole community is invited, including local kindergartens and playcentres. Out of the 30 judges asked, most of them are living in or have strong ties with our community. Many parents take a days annual leave so they can make it to Pet Day. We have market stalls selling a variety of items for adults and children and there is a cafe serving delicious morning teas. At lunchtime we crank up the BBQ in time to enjoy the entertainment and prizegiving. There are various activities like hair makeovers, tattoos, chocolate wheel, vintage tractor and trailer rides and a bouncy castle.

Market Day Pantry Always popular, stocked with homemade goodies and other donated items. For our market stalls to be a success we request all families donate at least 3 items from the list below. This list is a few suggestions, you may donate other items you feel are appropriate. EVENTS
Children may enter as many or as few of the events as they wish.

Grand Parade
All animals and owners, whether you are in fancy dress or not, parade around the sports field and gather for a group photo. Then proceed immediately to your judging or racing area. Refer to the attached map to see where your judging area is.

PETS
Please complete the Pet Return Slip at the back of this booklet and return to school by Wednesday. We need to know what numbers of pets to expect in each category so we can allocate judges. Bring appropriate water/feed/lead/cage for your pet. Pets must remain tied up. Horse and pony riders need to wear helmets when riding.

Best Decorated Cage

Decorate your pets cage and you may win a ribbon. Senior and Junior sections. Childs work only.

Judging
All pet owners will be judged as per Judging Questions listed on the back of this page. The judges score you for each section. Every child receives a certificate. Ribbons are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. These are handed out at the prizegiving at the end of the day. You may bring any type of pet but only one pet per child as the children need to remain with their animal while the judging takes place. Lamb feeding, leading and dog obedience course starts as soon as the grand parade is completed. When judging and racing is completed you may take your animal home. It is not compulsory to bring a pet. If you do not have a pet, you may bring a toy pet, it will be judged too. They are welcome in the grand parade and all children receive a certificate.

Lamb Feeding and Leading Races

Bring 200ml of milk for the drinking races. Remember to practice leading your lamb! These races will start at the lamb area straight after the grand parade. Five year old children will race their lambs first. Older age groups go to your judging areas for judging. You will be called for your race. Groups will be called in order from youngest to oldest, so the 10 and 11 year old children will be last to race their lambs. Ribbons awarded for 1st 2nd 3rd.

Animal and Owner Fancy Dress Competition

This is the first event of the day. Pets and owners dress up in costumes and parade around the tennis court and the winners are chosen. This is a great one for spectators so be sure to tell grandparents etc to arrive by 10am. Parent input ok!

Dog Obedience Course

These will start at the dog area as soon as the grand parade is finished. Five year old children will walk their dogs first. Older age groups go to your judging areas for judging. You will be called for your obedience course. Groups will be called in order from youngest to oldest, so the 10 and 11 year old children will be last to demonstrate their dogs skills. Ribbons awarded for 1st 2nd 3rd.

SENIOR JUDGING QUESTIONS Care What and when do you feed your pet? Do you give your pet treats? Do you give your pet special treatment in cold weather? Where does your pet sleep? Knowledge What type/breed of animal is your pet? What do you know about that breed? Why did you choose this breed? What do you call a female? Male? What does your pet do all day? How old is your pet? Condition How do you keep your pet healthy? Describe the signs of a healthy pet. What are the main diseases/causes of sickness for your pet? How would you know if your pet was sick, what would you do about it? Handling Does your pet know your voice/listen to your commands? How does your pet get exercise? Do you play with your pet? How?

BAKING & FLORAL ART Children may enter as many or as few of the baking and floral art events as they wish. Classrooms will be open on Sunday 6th November between 4-6pm for you to bring your entries down early. Some families feel this is easier than remembering lots of things on the morning of Pet Day. Baking in Room 4 and Floral Art in Room 5. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THIS IS YOUR CHILDS CREATIVE WORK ONLY.

BAKING Ribbons awarded for each section and each age group. Every child receives a certificate for their efforts. Put childs name and age as at Pet Day underneath the plate out of judges view. Muffins Any flavour or size. Maximum of three on a plate. Pikelets Plain, no cream or jam. Maximum of three on a plate. Decorated biscuits Child does not need to make the biscuit, you can make or buy the biscuit but the child must decorate it themselves. Maximum of three on a plate.

FLORAL ART Ribbons awarded for each section and each age group. Every child receives a certificate for their efforts. Put childs name and age as at Pet Day underneath the dish out of judges view. CHILDS WORK ONLY. Sandsaucer Must be on a saucer (approx 16cm diameter) and only use flowers/leaves in a base of sand or soil. Miniature garden As well as flowers/ leaves you may add decorative touches like toys etc. Maximum size 40cm X 30cm. Vege Art Use your imagination to transform a vegetable or fruit into art eg. Potato man, carrot rocket.
