Bandar-e-Anzali 1:100,000 sheet located to the southwest of Caspian Sea, consists parts of Alborz and Kope Dagh structural domains. Alluvium and rift sequences of Precambrian and Lower Paleozoic metamorphic units occurred during Assyntian orogeny with an angular unconformity, and the shelf-epicontinental facies of Upper Paleozoic with a disconformity are both lying under unmetamorphosed sequences of Permian indicating Hercynian orogeny in this area. Different rate of metamorphism and angular unconformity between lower and upper parts of Gasht complex, as well as retrograde metamorphism influuenced GashtMasuleh complexes and ophiolitic sequences all are due to closure of PrecambrianEarly Paleozoic basins. The Mesozoic deposits with two contemporaneous rift facies type developed in transtenssional systems and foreland facies deposits occurred also due to the closure of Paleotethys are distinguished clearly from other deposits. Among them the alkaline type lavas and detritic rift facies of Jurassic developed up to Upper Cretaceous, and indicate the transtenssional system in this area which is similar to what occurred in Caspian. The distribution of tenssional fractures along Caspian shore trending W-E is the most considerable structural characteristic of that age in the whole area. Cenozoic units in this area consist of calkalkaline volcanism of Paleogene and the granitoids occurred at the late stage of orogeny, with other units all were deformed during the Alpine ororgeny. The predominant transtenssional system trending approxmiately NW-SE and change in faulting mechanism from dexteral in southwest to sinistral in northwest at Talesh Range as well as transtenssional systems trending NW-SW in southern Caspian is very important in this area.
