Take Time for Art

The arts take timeto see, to do, to experience, and yes, even to talk about. The Alabama River Region Arts Center has been out and about, in and beyond our community quite a bit lately; from meeting new friends in Tuscaloosa, making plans, to taking measurements, and even, passing out candy. We have been getting the word out to the community that the Arts matter to all and that All can benefit from the arts. How have we been doing this? From setting up tables in Wetumpkas Candy Walk to participating in Chilton County Arts Councils 2011 Artists Showcase & Fall Festival, and talking with many teachers in between; we are hearing from many enthusiastic supporters of the Arts. Join with us in November as we continue to communicate our mission to the river region community. Do your part for art.

We transformed pumpkins on Saturday, Oct. 29, and we learned that being thick-skinned has benefits for people and pumpkins. Although, some of the pumpkins were more dried out inside and they did not carve as easily as the moist ones, all of the pumpkin carvers achieved success in carving faces on their pumpkins. Extreme instructor, woodcarver Dylan Goodson, was not kept away by his cold and all had a great time learning how to be carvers. As Dylan pointed out with his Thomas McCroan proudly displays his pumpkin carving; some of his classmates' pumpkins are displayed at right. example (see lower right), Below, Jamie shows off her creation. the most fun pumpkins to carve are not the perfectly shaped ones! While sharp tools were wielded in the Van Gogh Room; glue, glitter, and feathers ruled in the Monet Room. There little creators could create wondrous things by adding to, not cutting away parts of their (plastic) pumpkins. You might say the mixed media collage technique reigned in this room. Whatever you call it, it was fun!

Window Art Displays at Pump the Tump

Wetumpka's Alabama River Region Arts Center is teaming with the organizer of Pump the Tump (PTT), a social media Facebook group, Teresa Roberson, and two downtown building owners to display works of local artists. The purpose of the event is a "Meet and Greet" event November 1 9th, from 11 AM to 2 PM in downtown Wetumpka. There will be food and music as well as table-lined streets with businesses ready to show that "Wetumpka is Alive". There will be give-aways and raffles, as well. ARRAC is coordinating twelve window displays and about 2400 square feet of retail space. Space is organized to demonstrate art techniques to the public and to display fine art. Other window-only displays will include local school work, homeschool work and featured artists. Volunteers will be needed to visit with the public about the Arts Center, about the displaying artists, as well as, to protect the items on display. In keeping with our mission, ARRAC is inviting local artists and art lovers to: Demonstrate your craft for the purposes of promoting potential classes (art, craft, & music teachers), Exhibit their own work, Volunteer to set up, take down and/or visit with the public. This is just a 3-hour event. ARRAC membership is not required, but the space is limited, so reserve your space right away. There is no fee for displaying work. Please call for an appointment to deliver your work. Set up can be arranged in one of two ways: 1 . We set up: Work needs to be at the Arts Center by 3:00 PM on Saturday, Nov. 12th with paperwork

Frank Sullivan demonstrated traditional coil-building of a jug.

We were welcomed with open arms at Chilton County Arts Council's first event in the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center located on Jefferson State Community College's campus. An artist could get spoiled exhibiting this way: no wind, indoor heat, a snack bar across the aisle, and great music to throw pots by. As evidence of this, Frank Sullivan, ARRAC's Executive Director, built a 12" tall coil jug over the course of the two-day event; meanwhile, Sharon Ervin and Marty McIntyre talked with visitors. We met a lot of wonderful people in the Chilton County area who are as excited as we are about the arts.

Pathlights
Thumbs up to Sharon Ervin , for providing walkway solar pathlights at our main entrance. They were totally wonderful. Thumbs down to the Halloween pranksters that demolished several of them.

The next meeting will be 11 /3 at 6:30 pm. We will be planning and filling slots for the upcoming events in which ARRAC will be participating. Come and get involved! This is a great chance to sign up for outreach events in the community.

Brainers Brainstorm

To be caught in the vortex, means you find yourself caught up in the excitement of the ARRAC through association; and before you know it, you have been swept to a new place of art, service or outreach.
