The Security of enterprise facilities and the data processed and stored in them has become a more serious and complex business. Chief Security Officers (CSOs) and security personnel must understand and utilise network infrastructure in order to keep their employees and data safe. True security requires the coordination of staff and technology across the enterprise, as well as educated and cooperative users. But even the best information security policies and plans will fail if the underlying network is not secure. Traditionally independent security applications are being integrated into existing IP platforms, taking advantage of centralised management, longer distances and higher bandwidth provided by today's Ethernet networks. Protecting a company's infrastructure and critical data begins at the physical layer: your structured cabling. If you require security applications that are robust and reliable, then you must demand the same from the technologies supporting it. There are two key areas in developing a security infrastructure which must be considered: detection & protection. D ETECTION Bandwidth demand is increasing rapidly. Frame rates and picture resolution of surveillance cameras put high requirements on capabilities of the transmission media. Outdoor rating for various environmental scenarios (direct burial, duct, aerial) is mandatory. PROTECTION Different parts of a secured data network require different access levels for staff and maintenance personnel. Locking features within the hardware components provide limited access to qualified personnel. Keyed connectors physically control user access to separate network domains. The scenarios described in this

Intrusion: Using security equipment with fail-safe cabling and hardware is critical to preventing intrusion. Optical fibre can provide greater security and higher bandwidths than copper.

Access: Locked distribution points keep access to your network secure. With the right solution, external personnel's access to restricted areas for installation or maintenance can be kept at a minimum.

Damage: Tamper-proof and tested products protect against intentional damage as well as harsh environmental conditions while maintaining data integrity. Long-term reliability of the components is crucial for the smooth and uninterrupted operation of any security system.

A common deployment scenario for outdoor video monitoring, such as a car park, this solution uses a cable run from the main crossconnect (MC) in the building to an outdoor, weatherproof consolidation point (intermediate cross-connect or IC). Environmentally robust fan-out cables are distributed either directly to each camera, for fibre-ready cameras, or to the enclosure for media conversion for traditional cameras. This solution reduces installation cost, as it enables one cable from the building to the consolidation point, rather than multiple home runs from the building to serve each camera.

A 12-panel Closet Connector Housing (CCH) located in the MC with 12 single-mode ST compatible anaerobic connectors and 6-fibre connector panels. MC connected to IC with single-mode cable, facilitating field termination and reducing the need for transition splicing. A 6-panel Environmental Distribution Centre (EDC) located at intermediate cross-connect with 6-fibre connector panels. The EDC maintains the greatest level of environmental protection. A 2-fibre single-mode fan-out Cable interconnected at the EDC and terminated at camera locations. Cable terminated on both ends with single-mode ST compatible anaerobic connectors.

INDOOR INDUSTRIAL ZONE
This scenario illustrates a typical video monitoring deployment within the building in an industrial setting, such as on a factory floor or a distribution facility. A rugged cable is run from the telecommunications room (the main cross connect) to a passive consolidation point (the intermediate cross-connect) to support cameras, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), access control, etc. within a specific zone. This deployment scenario provides flexibility through reduced cabling, and reduces the cost of moves, adds and changes (MACs) as security needs change.

D F S DEUTSCHE FLUGSICHERUNG GMBH
S ITUATION Germany has one of the busiest airspaces in the world. Every day, around 8,000 flights pass through German airspace. Last year, the air traffic controllers at the DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (German Flight Security) controlled more than 2.7 million aircraft movements. They ensure that the aircrafts always maintain the required separation from one another, and that the high-altitude air traffic over Germany is handled safely and swiftly. They work either in the radar control centre or in the tower. In Langen, near Frankfurt, DFS operates Europe's largest radar control centre. Further control centres are located in Berlin, Bremen, Karlsruhe and Munich. DFS also has staff working in the EUROCONTROL Centre in Maastricht, 17 international airports in Germany and the regional airports Niederrhein and Altenburg-Nobitz. All in all, DFS employs 5,400 people, one third of whom are air traffic controllers. NETWORK DESIGN The data that the controllers rely on to do their daily job and to keep passengers safe in their flights is mission-critical; the communications network therefore has to be in the best condition down-time is not an option. The DFS is required to equip their network with the best in passive and active components. Especially important for the modernisation of their control centre in Karlsruhe was modularity for integrating copper and fibre optic components and the potential for upgrades to the network. When their technical team looked at various options for updating their data centre and traffic controller stations, they decided on Corning LANscape Solutions. C ORNING Q UALITY The DFS has been installing Corning products in their facilities for more than five years due to the high degree of the products flexibility and quality. The LANscape Solutions modular concept allows copper and fibre components to be installed in the same hardware, providing customers with a high degree of flexibility. The DFS installed a complete Corning copper system in their control centre, complete with S/FTP 600/23 copper cable and Category 6 patch panels. The workstations of the traffic controllers are highly modern, outfitted with modular LANscape Solutions patch panels which are equipped with LC fibre optic connectors and Category 6 S250 copper modules. The space-saving features of the copper Plug & Play System products were ideal, as the dimensions of the control booths and space available in the data centre had restrictions before installation. By choosing Corning LANscape Solutions, DFS was able to meet their 100% redundancy standards and equip their control centre with the most modern equipment in a limited space.

E RNST & YOUNG E UROPEAN D ATA CENTRE
S ITUATION Ernst & Young relied on a co-location model for the consolidation of its data centre. The accounting firm brought together three of its European data centres in TelecityRedbus near Frankfurt, Germany. Since November 2005, the IT capacities of Ernst & Young's data centres in Eschborn, Stuttgart and Rotterdam have been centralised and operating in approximately 600 square metres in the building of the Frankfurt co-location specialist. Corning was responsible for the planning and installation of the data centres entire fibre optic and copper cabling system. Time required to implement the Corning Plug and Play solution: six weeks. R EQUIREMENTS "The consolidation of our three data centres in TelecityRedbus allows us considerable cost savings. Constructing our own data centre would have required a high initial investment. This would only have paid off after years of use," said Wolfgang Frhlich, site manager responsible for Ernst & Youngs LAN and data centre in Eschborn near Frankfurt. "We are now profiting from the high flexibility and cost advantages of the TelecityRedbus co-location model. That means that we literally only pay for the space in the data centre. Operating the infrastructure, that is, hardware, software, data and applications, remains in our hands. We relied on Corning, the networking specialists, for our data centres fibre optic and copper network". Ernst & Young, with its head office in Stuttgart, is one of Germany's largest auditing and consulting firms. It is the German member of Ernst & Young Global and has 6,500 employees in 22 locations. From the early planning stages, Corning accompanied planners and installers from the firm Eltec Service GmbH as well as Ernst & Young. All those involved reached agreement quickly, and the planning phase was concluded within eight weeks. Corning supported the auditing firm with technical documentation as well as project presentations concerning the cabling systems used in its product series Plug & Play. P LUG & P LAY S YSTEMS

D ATA CENTRES

The Plug and Play System from Corning Cable Systems is a pre-terminated optical fibre and copper cabling system. It optimises the assembly of a network infrastructure in structured building cabling. This is of particular importance to meet the requirements of data centres such as Ernst & Young. For the Ernst & Young project Corning modular 19 housings were installed with OM3 24-fibre MTP trunks for the fibre cabling, and FutureCom 10TEN modules and shielded copper cable for the copper cabling. The modular components of the system are simple to configure, and in comparison to standard systems, which need to be terminated on site, they are quickly installed, connected, and put into operation. The innovative wiring of the fibre optic modules prevents polarity problems and ensures compatibility, high system performance and a consistent quality among all fibre optic configurations. Another advantage of the pre-terminated system is that there is no need for extensive measuring and sizing. A simple final measurement suffices, leading to even more time saved.

T H E B E N E F I TS O F F I B R E F O R S E C U R I T Y A P P L I CATI O N S
In its simplest terms, fibre optics is the technology of using waveguides to transport information from one point to another in the form of light. Unlike the copper form of transmission, fibre optics is not electrical in nature. A basic fibre optic system consists of a transmitting device, which generates the light signal, an optical fibre cable, which carries the light, and a receiver, which accepts the light signal transmitted. The fibre itself is passive and does not contain any active, generative properties. Optical fibre systems have many advantages over metallic-based communication systems, for security applications and many other network types. These advantages include: Large Bandwidth, Lightweight and Small Diameter The amount of information carried in two strands of optical fibre would require a copper cable four inches in diameter. While todays applications require an ever-increasing amount of bandwidth, it is important to consider the space constraints of many end-users. The relatively small diameter and light weight of optical cables make such installations in existing duct systems easy and practical, and saves valuable conduit space in these environments. Easy Installation and Upgrades Optical fibre cables can be installed with the same equipment that is used to install copper and coaxial cables, with some modifications due to the small size and limited tensile strength and bend radius of optical cables. Although sometimes difficult to predict, growth can be accommodated by installing spare fibres for future requirements. Installation of spare fibres today is more economical than installing additional cables later. Security Unlike metallic-based systems, the dielectric (non-conducting) nature of optical fibre makes it impossible to remotely detect the signal being transmitted within the cable. The only way to do so is by actually accessing the optical fibre itself. Accessing the fibre requires intervention that is easily detectable by security surveillance. These circumstances make fibre extremely attractive for security applications. Non-Conductivity Optical fibres, because they are dielectric, can be installed in areas with electromagnetic interference (EMI), including radio frequency interference (RFI). Areas with high EMI include utility lines, power-carrying lines and railroad tracks. Alldielectric cables are also ideal for areas prone to lighting strikes. Long Distance Signal Transmission The low signal loss and superior signal integrity found in optical systems allow much longer intervals of signal transmission without active or passive processing than metallic-based systems. Designed for Future Applications Needs Fibre optic solutions are affordable today, as electronics prices fall and optical cable pricing remains low. In many cases, fibre solutions are less costly than copper. As bandwidth demands increase rapidly with technological advances, fibre will continue to play a vital role in the long-term success of telecommunications.
