JBLM is a great place for children to grow up. Unfortunately no neighborhood is completely immune to crime. Parents are responsible for their children on Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM), no matter what their age. By following these tips from the National Crime Prevention Council, you can further reduce the possibility of having your child fall victim to crimes.

Know where your children are. Have your children tell you or ask permission before leaving the house and give them a time to check in or be home. When possible, have them leave a phone number of where they will be. Help children learn important phone numbers. Have your children practice reciting their home phone number and address, and your work and cell phone numbers. If they have trouble memorizing these, write them down on a card and have them carry it at all times. Tell your children where you will be and the best way to reach you. Set limits on where your children can go in your neighborhood. Do you want them crossing busy roads? Playing in alleys or unoccupied buildings? Are there certain homes in your neighborhood that you don't want your children to go to? Encourage your children to play with others. Theres safety in numbers! Get to know your children's friends. Meet their parents before letting your children to go to their home and keep a list of their phone numbers. If you can't meet their parents, call and talk to them. Ask what your children might do at their house and if they will be supervised. Teach children to trust their instincts. Explain that if they ever feel scared or uncomfortable, they should get away as fast as they can and tell an adult. Tell them that sometimes adults they know may make them feel uncomfortable, and they should still get away as fast as possible and tell another adult what happened. Reassure children that you will help them when they need it. Teach your children to be assertive. Make sure they know that its okay to say no to an adult and to run away from adults in dangerous situations. Choose a safe house in your neighborhood. Pick a neighbor's house where your children can go if they need help. Point out other places they can go for help, like stores, libraries, and police stations. Work together with your neighbors. Watch out for suspicious and unusual behavior in your neighborhood. Get to know your neighbors and their children so you can look out for one another. JBLM Regulation 210-1 sets juvenile curfew at 2300 0500. On Post Report Suspicious Activity to the Military Police 9673107-- If off-post call 911. OTHER TIPS
Approximately two million military children have experienced a parental deployment since 2001. As deployments come to an end, service members are often excited about coming home and seeing their families. But after the initial celebrations pass, readjusting to family life and reconnecting with teenagers can be challenging. Although deployments can be difficult on teenagers who are already undergoing many changes you can make your homecoming easier by following a few simple guidelines: Show your teenager that you care: Acknowledge you were gone. Let your teenager know that you were sad to miss important events in his or her life. Look through pictures to share memories that happened while you were deployed. Ask about their life. Ask questions about the events you missed including school, sports, prom, and extracurricular activities so you can catch up on the important events that happened while you were gone. Spend quality time together:

Schedule family time. Set aside time each day to spend oneon-one with your teenager, even if it's only to quickly discuss his or her day. Plan a family vacation. Whether it's a week at the beach or an overnight camping trip, a vacation can allow your family to reconnect in a relaxed setting.

Talk with your teenager about your deployment: Initiate the conversation. Be proactive and start the conversation with your teenager. He or she probably has a number of questions and may be unsure how to ask them. Emphasize the positive. Share positive stories with your teenager including examples of rebuilding a community, working with children, or keeping people safe.

CLOSURES AND CONSTRUCTION

1. Because US forces are coming home from Iraq by the end of the year, the Postal Service will stop accepting mail addressed to military post offices in Iraq starting November 17. 2. Liggett Avenue Public Works has shut down Liggett Avenue between Division and 12th Streets for 45 days of construction. The closure includes the intersection of Liggett and Division, but 12th Street and the intersection at Liggett and 12th will remain open. Parking areas along that length of Liggett Avenue will be blocked. Most of the parking areas have access from other directions, but parking will be blocked completely in front of and west of McVeigh Sports and Fitness Center and across the street from I Corps Headquarters, Building 2025. Parking for McVeigh will be in the rear and on the north side of Liggett, which can be accessed from Pendleton. While Liggett is under construction, the contractor is required to provide access from the parking area north of Liggett to McVeigh at, or near the location of the current McVeigh crosswalk. 3. Pendleton Avenue The first phase of construction to upgrade the road substructure under Pendleton Avenue near the Town Center on JBLM Lewis Main is nearing completion. Pendleton between 8th and 12th streets will be closed daily from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. for construction until Nov. 17. Liggett Avenue is also under construction, so traffic should detour onto Bitar Avenue to 9th Division Drive. Drivers can also turn onto Nevada Avenue from 41st Division Drive and follow the road to Pendleton Avenue. Officials are working to mitigate noise impact to Town Center residents. This is the first of several projects on two miles of Pendleton Avenue during the next 18 months, as crews widen the road and upgrade communication, power and water lines underneath. The widened avenue will result in better traffic flow, parking and facility access, creating a

friendlier environment for bikes and pedestrians. For more information, visit the Pendleton Avenue website at www.jblmpendleton.com. 4. Lewis North Gate Directorate of Public Works crews are updating and replacing the bollards at JBLM North Gate at 41st Division Drive South. The repairs are part of anti-terrorism/force protection measures. Construction is scheduled to end about Nov. 30. The inside two lanes at the gate will be closed from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to the outer two lanes. 5. Railroad Avenue Railroad Avenue will be closed starting Tuesday through Jan. 16, 2012 for road construction. Westbound traffic will be rerouted starting at Mann Avenue. That traffic, along with the local access traffic will flow around Railroad using West Way. Signs eastbound traffic will be warned before Alder Avenue to reroute via West Way. Local access down Alder and Incinerator Road will be available. The construction is part of the first phase of the Perimeter Road repair, lasting until August 2012. More information about traffic revision updates and construction changes will come as the contractor announces them. For road conditions, call 967-1733.

"We have seen the black masks and others who are intent on violence, These statements were made after an

intense weekend at the Occupy Vancouver site which included a death, hospitalizations and many arrests. 2. Local Information: Crime Prevention Information from Department of Emergency Services (DES), JBLM. Recently, there have been numerous thefts of various properties from Privately Owned Vehicles (POV), and from in/around military family quarters on JBLM. For the most part, the suspect(s) were able to perpetrate the thefts by simply walking down the street during the hours of darkness and checking to see if POVs were locked and/or quarters, refrigerators or other property were secured. Vehicles, garages and other containers were frequently left unlocked, and valuable items of personal property were often unsecured around quarters, thus allowing the perpetrators to steal property virtually unobserved. In the majority of cases, property owners failed to record the Serial Numbers (SN) of stolen items, and/or failed to mark property so it could be easily identified if recovered at a later date. 3. DES Recommendations: All of us should use common sense security measures to secure our property and ensure our safety. We should routinely remind and encourage our family and friends to properly secure ALL their property when left unattended for any length of time. Additionally, we should record serial numbers of property containing such data, and/or uniquely mark the property for easy identification, and for use by Law Enforcement should we become the victim of a theft. Steps to reduce victimization include: Leave lights on outside the residence during hours of darkness Secure all doors and windows of vehicles and residences Secure or hide high dollar items Secure or hide money / clothing / bags / bicycles, etc Establish a neighborhood watch program in your community. Record as much detail as possible about anyone that seems out of place. Write it down. Record the Date, Time & Location of Incidents. People: Sex, Race, Height, Build, Hair Color & Style, Distinguishing Features. Vehicles: Make, Model, Color, License Plate Number and State of Issue.

Crime prevention is everyones business. These suggestions are provided to assist you in reducing the potential for criminal activity within your military community. Working together we can make this a safer and more secure environment for our soldiers, their families, and all employees on the installation. If you have information concerning the thefts occurring in

the housing areas, please call the Military Police at: (253) 967-3107 / 3108 / 3109. INTERESTING LINKS
