The original Latin word "universitas" was used at the time of emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, to describe specialised "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located." The original Latin word referred to degree-granting institutions of learning in Western Europe, where this form of legal organisation was prevalent, and from where the institution spread around the world. In Indonesia, the college can take the form colleges, institutes, polytechnics, colleges, and universities. College education can organize academic, professional, and vocational education diploma programs (D1, D2, D3, D4), undergraduate (S1), master (S2), doctorate (S3), and specialists. Universities, institutes, and high schools that have doctoral programs are entitled to give an honorary doctorate (honoris causa doctorate) to individuals who are worthy of the award in respect of services outstanding in the fields of science, technology, social, religious, cultural, or of art. The title of professor or associate professor in question is only used during active work as an educator at the college.
